West African waters have long been among the richest in the world. But since the 1970s, European, Russian and even Asian fishing fleets have been raiding this part of the Atlantic Ocean, often illegally. This competition from foreign trawlers has terrible consequences for local artisanal fishermen. Facing the collapse of fish stocks, they are often caught in a daunting dilemma: "Barça or barsack" (Barcelona or die).

But some Senegalese are fighting back and do not accept this situation. Karim Sall, a fisherman unionist, and Diaba Diop, the leader of the women's fish processing union, are fighting tirelessly to make their voices heard by the Senegalese government and international institutions.
