Detroit's story has encapsulated the iconic narrative of America over the last century...the Great Migration of African Americans escaping Jim Crow; the rise of manufacturing and the middle class; the love affair with automobiles; the flowering of the American dream; and now the collapse of the economy and the fading American mythos.
With its vivid, painterly palette and haunting score, DETROPIA sculpts a dreamlike collage of a grand city teetering on the brink of dissolution. These soulful pragmatists and stalwart philosophers strive to make ends meet and make sense of it all, refusing to abandon hope or resistance. Their grit and pluck embody the spirit of the Motor City as it struggles to survive postindustrial America and begins to envision a radically different future.
'Elegiac and evocative, the documentary offers a richly textured view of the postindustrial city. As much a work of art as a social documentary, it paints a subtle and haunting picture of a city in precipitous postindustrial decline with slivers of salvation and glimpses of hope. Some images remain long after, such as the man singing opera in an abandoned building. It avoids the easy stereotypes and usual cliches to pose the troubling question: Is Detroit a harbinger for the US of the near future?' John Rennie Short, Professor of Public Policy, University of Maryland, Author, Alabaster Cities, Globalization, Modernity and The City and Cities and Suburbs
'Detropia creatively captures powerful imagery and individual stories showing how cities like Detroit are being devastated by globalization and economic policies which favor groups and interests holding vast wealth. In spite of this, the film shows how people across racial and ethnic boundaries are trying to become united and resourceful in challenging policies aimed at benefiting powerful corporations at the expense of their communities. The film holds important lessons for other U.S. cities where workers are seeking answers for responding to economic and political forces that de-value their families, neighbors, and communities.' Mr. James Jennings, Professor of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning, Tufts University
'How does it feel to live in a major U.S. city that has suffered massive job loss, depopulation, and the hollowing out of its middle class? Detropia shows us the human costs of deindustrialization, seen through the eyes of ordinary citizens coping with unemployment, declining incomes, and loss of city services...Yet juxtaposed against parts of the city that look like they've been excavated by archaeologists, we see the efforts of long-time residents along with some newcomers (mostly artists attracted by the low cost of housing), to salvage their city and make it once again a good place to live.' Dr. Mary Stevenson, Professor Emerita of Economics, University of Massachusetts, co-Author, The Urban Experience: Economics, Society, and Public Policy
'A vivid portrayal of the connections between a city and larger economic and political forces. It explodes the myth that the decline of Detroit is somehow the fault of Detroiters...The varied narratives of the city's future are brilliantly juxtaposed: the promise of the city's high culture arts, the influx of struggling young artists into downtown, and the less visible neighborhood clubs, vacant lots and union halls where long-time residents push back against long odds.' Dr. Elizabeth Mueller, Associate Professor in Community and Regional Planning, The University of Texas at Austin
'Viewers of this important documentary will be stunned by the apocalyptic images of Detroit neighborhoods and saddened by the residents' sense of hopelessness, depression and anger...The film notes that whole U.S. cities can fit within the abandoned areas of Detroit and shows that the fiscally mandatory road to 'right-sizing' the city is filled with political land mines for the city's leadership. As astute residents in the film observe, Detroit should be a wake up call to America.' Dr. Nancey Green Leigh, Director and Professor, School of City and Regional Planning, Georgia Institute of Technology, Lead author, Planning Local Economic Development, co-Author, Economic Revitalization: Cases and Strategies for City and Suburb
'Highly Recommended...What happened to Detroit should be a wake-up call to the rest of country. In the new economy, neither industries nor cities are too big to fail...[The filmmakers] tell this sad story, that include issues of race and class as much as economics, with cinematic beauty and grace.' Linda Frederiksen, Washington State University, Educational Media Reviews Online
'Poignant...Detropia shows what has happened...That means there are many issues that could be discussed in the classroom. Courses on social change, capitalism, anthropology of work, political anthropology, and economic anthropology would be good forums for this film.' Thomas Stevenson, Ohio University, Anthropology Review Database
'A striking portrayal of human resilience and ingenuity grappling with the fallout of an all but broken economic system, Detropia is highly recommended.' The Midwest Book Review
'Powerful...This thoughtful and thought-provoking documentary is a fond tribute to Detroit's past and a wake-up call to America's future.' Candace Smith, Booklist
'Depict[s] the desuetude and decay of the once-mighty Motor City...Highly recommended.' C. Cassady, Video Librarian
'Throughout, viewers see a proud city now down on its luck, with its citizens attempting to build a future...Highly recommended for all viewers.' Stephen Hupp, Library Journal
'Intense...Powerful, beautifully filmed.' Jonathan Ringen, Rolling Stone
'The most moving documentary I have seen in years. Both an ardent love letter to past vitality and a grateful salute to those who remain in place - the survivors, utterly without illusion, who refuse to leave. The filmmakers are so attuned to color and to shade that I was amazed by the handsomeness of what I was seeing. I'm not being perverse, this is a beautiful film.' David Denby, The New Yorker
'SPELLBINDING! Imagine if Frederick Wiseman and David Lynch had a bastard child, and you'll get a sense of the movie's off-kilter aesthetic, a potent and pointed mix of firsthand observation and surreal flights of fancy. Detropia moves with dreamlike fluidity between union halls and nightclubs, from abandoned factories to the Detroit opera house.' Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York
'The evocative new documentary from filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (Jesus Camp) is a portrait of a city that rose on utopian dreams, and then began a long decline to its current state of life support, all in just less than a century. The filmmakers pay elegy to the Detroit of the Motown era, with its thriving middle class supported by manufacturing. At the same time, they're honest about the fact that the version of Detroit local partisans yearn for is long gone and most likely not coming back.' Karina Longworth, The Village Voice
'This haunting piece of documentary cinema tells the story of one city in economic decay; but really, as the real people in the film repeatedly state, this isn't just a Detroit problem; it's an American problem.' Tambay A. Obenson, Indiewire
'Of all the Sundance films tackling the gap between the richest 1% and the rest of the nation, the documentary Detropia stands out for how it encapsulates the causes and potential solutions.' John Horn and Steven Zeitchik, Los Angeles Times
'A startling, haunting documentary...Like a snapshot of a nightmarish future for many more American cities.' Tom Keogh, The Seattle Times
'The defeat of the middle class that has comprised the last decade of Detroit's history. That painful story and its meaning for the rest of America is the subject of Detropia, an important, heartbreaking, and yet still occasionally hilarious documentary.' Tim Wu, Slate
'Haunting and important...Crucial and enlightening.' New York Daily News
'Art often serves as a Rorschach test and this interpretation of the global economy's impact on the U.S. manufacturing base, as seen through the prism of Detroit, is bound to strike people with different perspectives in different ways.' Detroit Free Press
'Oddly beautiful...Subtler and richer than its blunt title suggests.' Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
'A well-chronicled tale with an undetermined ending...Haunting.' Mary Chapman, The New York Times
'City decay has never looked so eerily beautiful.' David Lewis, San Francisco Chronicle
'Evocative...Beautifully composed...Detroit's story is a microcosm of America's--just, for now, slightly more desperate.' Karina Longworth, LA Weekly
'Gives you more than pretty pictures of abandoned buildings. It gives you the story of the people who live among them...What makes the dreamscape of Detropia so powerful is the fact that it's rooted in reality.' Rebecca Messner, Grist
'Detroit has become a state of mind of late--a mingled sense of loss, frustration and hope for renewal. That thought is eloquently reflected in Detropia.' Jennie Punter, The Globe and Mail
'Beautifully shot...A visually stunning film.' OnMilwaukee.com
'A striking and moving study of 'what was' versus 'what it has become'...[A] cautionary tale with a lens that makes even devastation a thing of beauty.' Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times
'A reality check...[An] anxious message of a middle-class slipping away.' Laura Berman, The Detroit News
'All of the scenes in this movie are deeply personal portraits. As devastating as the economic environment of Detroit is, the filmmaking in Detropia is so beautiful that the resilience of the city's remaining residents come through in the beauty of the film...The people in this film are real people, and they still have plenty of fight left in them. Perhaps Detropia will help spread that fighting spirit to the rest of the country.' Kim Nicoloni, Counterpunch
'The film reveals the tragedy through impressionist sequences that feel like stanzas of epic poetry, and are shot in rich, saturated colors straight from a Renaissance painting...Detropia's filmmakers stay out of the picture, hanging back to allow the viewer to absorb the meaning of Detroit's fate. It is even more complex than we thought.' Inga Saffron, Philadelphia Inquirer
'Detroit may be the best city to illustrate the problems facing America today--and the thoroughly independent documentary Detropia may be the best movie...Offers a hypnotic look at every major issue in the presidential election, from lost manufacturing jobs to outsourcing to the disappearing middle class. With gorgeous, unflinching images, it tracks the decomposition of one of America's greatest cities into a place where people scavenge for scrap metal to survive.' Tim Molloy, The Wrap
'Beautiful...Ewing and Grady have found visual poetry in the ruins of this once-great city.' Sarah Boslaugh, Playback
'Seeps into your bones...Grady and Ewing are the most talented documentaries to come along in years...The movie is a terrifying look at a nation (and world?) in decline, and it leaves you more than a little uneasy.' Scott MacDonald, Toronto Standard
'A powerful and pertinent vision of one of the US' great dirty secrets and hopefully, it will direct as many eyeballs to Detroit as possible.' Dork Shelf
'I urge you all to see this film...if for no other reason than to get an education on what Detroit is going through. While painful to watch, it's very important that we do not bury our heads in the sand and that we pay attention to the demise of one of the greatest cities in our country.' Pink is the New Blog
'Detropia is devastating...Visually beautiful, but relentlessly not romantic. The shots hit hard and hurt. Like they should.' Daniel Denvir, VICE
'Fascinating...Experiential and elegiac, aiming to display both the pockets of life and joy and tradition still animating Motown, while at the same time moving us slowly through abandoned streets and decaying structures, to impress upon us just how unfathomably wrong it feels to see an American city in this state.' Michael Sicinski, Nashville Scene
'You might find yourself unable to look away, and in the end you might feel a little guilty for gawking, a little powerless in the face of economic turmoil. But sometimes watching can be empowering, depending on how you proceed once the credits have rolled.' Erin Gleeson, Baltimore City Paper
'A wrenching but mesmerizing documentary...The Confederacy of Dunces -- business, labor and government -- whose complacency let Humpty fall off the wall hasn't figured out how to put him together again.' Barry Paris, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
'[A] lyrical and intimate portrait of a city in crisis...Find[s] the beauty in the sublime, the poetry in the abandonment, and the hope in the recollections.' Kristin McCracken, Huffington Post

00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:10.959
[calm orchestral music]
00:00:20.959 --> 00:00:26.959
[rousing orchestral music]
00:00:36.959 --> 00:00:42.959
[music becomes calm]
00:00:50.959 --> 00:00:53.958
- It\'s gonna challenge us
to do the right thing
00:00:53.959 --> 00:00:54.999
for the right reason,
00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:56.958
and people just don\'t want
to do right no more.
00:00:56.959 --> 00:00:59.958
Let\'s do anything.
Let\'s do it.
00:00:59.959 --> 00:01:01.958
Anything... we just do it.
00:01:01.959 --> 00:01:05.958
That\'s why it\'s critical.
00:01:05.959 --> 00:01:10.291
We are in critical times.
00:01:10.292 --> 00:01:12.958
That\'s the message tonight.
00:01:12.959 --> 00:01:14.999
God is saying it\'s critical.
00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:18.416
We need to pray for our leaders,
00:01:18.417 --> 00:01:21.291
because they get weak.
00:01:21.292 --> 00:01:22.958
And we have to come up.
00:01:22.959 --> 00:01:24.958
It\'s our time.
00:01:24.959 --> 00:01:25.959
It\'s our time.
00:01:25.960 --> 00:01:27.958
God has delivered us
to save them
00:01:27.959 --> 00:01:29.958
from these times.
00:01:29.959 --> 00:01:30.959
- All right!
00:01:46.959 --> 00:01:48.958
- Perfectly good chairs.
00:01:48.959 --> 00:01:50.958
Perfectly good.
00:01:50.959 --> 00:01:51.959
Look.
It\'s a spinner.
00:01:51.960 --> 00:01:53.959
I\'m coming back to get this.
00:01:55.959 --> 00:01:57.999
Hello?
00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:04.291
[men singing operatic music]
00:02:04.292 --> 00:02:08.958
[man singing operatic solo]
00:02:08.959 --> 00:02:10.958
[chorus sings]
00:02:10.959 --> 00:02:12.958
[man singing]
00:02:12.959 --> 00:02:15.708
[chorus singing]
00:02:15.709 --> 00:02:17.833
[man singing]
00:02:17.834 --> 00:02:20.959
[chorus singing]
00:02:22.959 --> 00:02:26.958
[quiet orchestral music]
00:02:26.959 --> 00:02:32.959
[orchestral music and singing
pick up tempo]
00:02:41.959 --> 00:02:44.541
[music and singing crescendo]
00:02:44.542 --> 00:02:46.958
[music and singing quiet]
00:02:46.959 --> 00:02:49.708
[music and singing crescendo]
00:02:49.709 --> 00:02:51.541
[music and singing quiet]
00:02:51.542 --> 00:02:56.541
[music and singing crescendo]
00:02:56.542 --> 00:02:59.292
[sirens wailing]
00:03:00.959 --> 00:03:06.959
[calm orchestral music]
00:03:15.959 --> 00:03:21.959
[music becomes menacing]
00:03:27.959 --> 00:03:30.959
[engine rumbling]
00:03:40.959 --> 00:03:43.958
[mechanical whirring]
00:03:43.959 --> 00:03:49.709
[menacing music continues]
00:03:50.959 --> 00:03:52.958
- This is the downsizing
of Detroit.
00:03:52.959 --> 00:03:53.959
You\'re watching it live.
00:03:53.960 --> 00:03:55.958
One of 10,000 homes
00:03:55.959 --> 00:03:58.958
that they are trying to get done
in the next four years...
00:03:58.959 --> 00:04:03.541
Over the course of those
four years of Mayor Bing\'s term.
00:04:03.542 --> 00:04:05.833
These are houses
that are never coming back.
00:04:05.834 --> 00:04:07.958
Bill Koresky with Able Demo...
00:04:07.959 --> 00:04:09.958
These... these houses
are not coming back.
00:04:09.959 --> 00:04:10.959
There\'s no people
to live in them.
00:04:10.960 --> 00:04:12.958
- No.
Not right now, no.
00:04:12.959 --> 00:04:14.958
You see, there\'s one family
every 20 minutes moving out.
00:04:14.959 --> 00:04:16.958
- Moving out of Detroit?
00:04:16.959 --> 00:04:18.958
It\'s... it\'s going back
to the prairie,
00:04:18.959 --> 00:04:21.958
and these houses are just
disappearing from the landscape.
00:04:21.959 --> 00:04:25.958
- Yeah, they said there\'s 90,000
right now ready to go.
00:04:25.959 --> 00:04:27.958
- Wow.
00:04:27.959 --> 00:04:29.958
- Every day, nonstop.
00:04:29.959 --> 00:04:31.958
Every day.
00:04:31.959 --> 00:04:33.124
Get \'em done, get another list.
00:04:33.125 --> 00:04:35.958
Get \'em done, get another list.
00:04:35.959 --> 00:04:38.958
- Man...
- Oh, yeah.
00:04:38.959 --> 00:04:40.958
Yeah, I think we got... I don\'t
know how many we got right here.
00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:42.959
Like... I know we got, like,
11 on this street.
00:04:47.959 --> 00:04:53.959
[ambient instrumental music]
00:04:58.709 --> 00:05:01.709
[engine rumbling]
00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:27.959
[music continues]
00:05:44.959 --> 00:05:47.959
[static crackling]
00:05:54.292 --> 00:05:56.999
- July 4, 2010.
00:05:57.000 --> 00:05:59.833
Independence Day.
00:05:59.834 --> 00:06:02.958
We going real revolutionary.
00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:04.039
We in a beautiful building.
00:06:11.959 --> 00:06:13.541
[dreamy instrumental music]
00:06:13.542 --> 00:06:14.958
History is just
one of my things,
00:06:14.959 --> 00:06:16.541
even since grade school.
00:06:16.542 --> 00:06:17.958
[gasps]
00:06:17.959 --> 00:06:19.958
Are you [...] me?
00:06:19.959 --> 00:06:21.958
That\'s a passion.
00:06:21.959 --> 00:06:22.959
What was there?
00:06:22.960 --> 00:06:24.709
Who was there?
00:06:25.959 --> 00:06:31.959
[music continues]
00:06:35.959 --> 00:06:37.958
These hallways, though...
I mean, I\'m trying to...
00:06:37.959 --> 00:06:39.958
I\'m picturing this place clean
00:06:39.959 --> 00:06:42.958
and there being, you know,
00:06:42.959 --> 00:06:43.959
people walking around
00:06:43.960 --> 00:06:46.292
and [...] happening.
00:06:49.959 --> 00:06:50.959
[buzzes]
00:06:50.960 --> 00:06:52.958
Bring that [...]
on up here, girl.
00:06:52.959 --> 00:06:53.959
[chuckles]
00:06:54.959 --> 00:06:55.959
[laughs]
00:07:00.959 --> 00:07:02.958
Wow.
00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:04.958
It\'s amazing where you see where
they just ripped out the wall,
00:07:04.959 --> 00:07:06.959
\'cause there\'s copper piping
right there.
00:07:08.959 --> 00:07:10.417
Hmm.
00:07:15.959 --> 00:07:17.999
Can you imagine, like,
having breakfast right here?
00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:19.958
You know what I mean?
Like, look at your view.
00:07:19.959 --> 00:07:21.958
Look at your view
in the morning.
00:07:21.959 --> 00:07:24.124
Like, \"Yeah, I\'m gonna go out
and conquer the world,
00:07:24.125 --> 00:07:25.965
\'cause I can damn near see it
from right here.\"
00:07:28.542 --> 00:07:30.958
Motown right up the street.
00:07:30.959 --> 00:07:32.417
[sighs]
00:07:34.709 --> 00:07:35.958
I can\'t leave, man.
00:07:35.959 --> 00:07:37.958
Can\'t [...] leave.
00:07:37.959 --> 00:07:38.959
[clicks tongue]
00:07:47.709 --> 00:07:50.124
I feel like I was maybe here
a little while back,
00:07:50.125 --> 00:07:52.833
or I\'m older than I really am,
00:07:52.834 --> 00:07:55.958
but I just have, like,
this young...
00:07:55.959 --> 00:07:57.958
This young body
and spirit and mind,
00:07:57.959 --> 00:07:59.958
but I have the memory
of this place
00:07:59.959 --> 00:08:02.958
when it was bangin\'.
00:08:02.959 --> 00:08:03.959
That\'s how I feel.
00:08:06.125 --> 00:08:09.958
- [singing] Ooh, baby
00:08:09.959 --> 00:08:15.959
[disjointed singing
over R&B music]
00:08:30.959 --> 00:08:36.959
[music continues]
00:08:40.959 --> 00:08:43.958
- We are about to take off
on the highway of tomorrow.
00:08:43.959 --> 00:08:44.959
Stand by.
00:08:44.960 --> 00:08:50.959
[mysterious music]
00:08:52.959 --> 00:08:56.958
- [singing] Tomorrow
00:08:56.959 --> 00:08:59.958
Tomorrow
00:08:59.959 --> 00:09:04.708
Our dreams will come true
00:09:04.709 --> 00:09:06.416
- Get out of the way!
00:09:06.417 --> 00:09:08.958
Hey!
00:09:08.959 --> 00:09:11.958
You better move!
00:09:11.959 --> 00:09:13.959
All right, you can\'t wrestle
with that bumper.
00:09:22.959 --> 00:09:26.292
I want to take you out
where I got hired in 1968.
00:09:28.709 --> 00:09:30.833
The Cadillac Assembly Plant
00:09:30.834 --> 00:09:32.958
from there all the way down
00:09:32.959 --> 00:09:34.958
and on this side over here too.
00:09:34.959 --> 00:09:36.958
One big plant.
00:09:36.959 --> 00:09:40.959
Right there used to be
the Cadillac Assembly Plant.
00:09:41.959 --> 00:09:47.958
Now it\'s a place
where they park dumpsters.
00:09:47.959 --> 00:09:50.833
Now, this plant was huge.
00:09:50.834 --> 00:09:51.959
All of this was the plant.
00:09:53.959 --> 00:09:56.958
It was the first job I ever had.
00:09:56.959 --> 00:09:58.959
You know, the first job
I ever had.
00:10:10.125 --> 00:10:11.958
I got hired on a Thursday.
00:10:11.959 --> 00:10:13.958
I worked Thursday,
Friday, and Saturday,
00:10:13.959 --> 00:10:16.958
and my paycheck
that I got from there
00:10:16.959 --> 00:10:18.541
made the one
that I got in Tennessee
00:10:18.542 --> 00:10:19.959
look like I don\'t know what.
00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:23.000
And guess what.
00:10:23.001 --> 00:10:24.958
This was one of the hotels
00:10:24.959 --> 00:10:26.958
we used to hang out at night
right here,
00:10:26.959 --> 00:10:28.708
The Show Crest.
00:10:28.709 --> 00:10:29.958
[laughs]
[...].
00:10:29.959 --> 00:10:31.708
[laughs]
00:10:31.709 --> 00:10:33.958
Yeah, it was... it was fun.
00:10:33.959 --> 00:10:35.708
[laughs]
00:10:35.709 --> 00:10:36.999
It was big fun.
00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:39.541
Show Crest!
00:10:39.542 --> 00:10:40.959
Go on down tonight, y\'all.
00:10:41.959 --> 00:10:44.416
Yup.
00:10:44.417 --> 00:10:45.959
Big time.
00:10:48.959 --> 00:10:50.958
See, after the plant left,
00:10:50.959 --> 00:10:52.958
[...], the neighborhood left.
00:10:52.959 --> 00:10:56.959
This... it just eventually
just went kaput.
00:11:00.959 --> 00:11:02.119
I want to show you something.
00:11:03.959 --> 00:11:05.709
This is the Great American Axle.
00:11:08.959 --> 00:11:11.958
See how large it is?
00:11:11.959 --> 00:11:13.709
Just to build axles now.
00:11:14.959 --> 00:11:16.958
All this is empty.
00:11:16.959 --> 00:11:18.000
Yeah.
00:11:19.959 --> 00:11:20.959
They built a new plant in Mexico
00:11:20.960 --> 00:11:22.958
and took all the work to Mexico.
00:11:22.959 --> 00:11:23.999
That\'s where it\'s at.
00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:29.959
[ambient instrumental music]
00:11:40.959 --> 00:11:46.959
[music continues]
00:12:06.959 --> 00:12:09.958
I\'ve been pulling my hair out
and puzzling with this
00:12:09.959 --> 00:12:12.958
and going back and forth
with the company on this,
00:12:12.959 --> 00:12:16.958
and I\'ve did a lot
of negotiations over my time,
00:12:16.959 --> 00:12:18.958
but I\'ve never dealt
with a management like this,
00:12:18.959 --> 00:12:20.958
and I\'ve tried everything.
00:12:20.959 --> 00:12:22.959
But they\'re calling this
their last proposal.
00:12:24.959 --> 00:12:27.959
You\'re gonna get mad, though.
I can tell you that.
00:12:30.959 --> 00:12:33.958
- Well, guys, senior quality
mechanical technicians,
00:12:33.959 --> 00:12:35.958
any of the guys that\'s
at $18.50 an hour right now,
00:12:35.959 --> 00:12:39.958
they will be going down to $18
for a 50¢ decrease in pay.
00:12:39.959 --> 00:12:42.958
For all the guys in plant seven
that are making $17,
00:12:42.959 --> 00:12:44.958
they want to move them down
to $14.50,
00:12:44.959 --> 00:12:48.958
which is a loss of $2.50 an hour
on their wage.
00:12:48.959 --> 00:12:52.958
For factory support, which is
the guys that are making $14.35,
00:12:52.959 --> 00:12:54.958
their new proposal is
$11 an hour,
00:12:54.959 --> 00:12:59.958
which means they would lose
$3.35 an hour on their wage.
00:12:59.959 --> 00:13:02.291
[people muttering]
00:13:02.292 --> 00:13:03.999
- Come on!
00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:05.958
This is ridiculous.
00:13:05.959 --> 00:13:06.999
We don\'t even need
to entertain this.
00:13:07.000 --> 00:13:08.958
- George, I\'d like
to make a motion
00:13:08.959 --> 00:13:10.958
that we don\'t even vote on this,
00:13:10.959 --> 00:13:12.958
that you return to the company
00:13:12.959 --> 00:13:14.958
and tell \'em we refuse
to vote on this.
00:13:14.959 --> 00:13:15.959
This is hogwash.
- I second it.
00:13:15.959 --> 00:13:16.959
I second it.
- We got any seconds?
00:13:16.959 --> 00:13:17.959
All: Second.
00:13:17.960 --> 00:13:18.999
- All in favor,
say \"aye.\"
00:13:19.000 --> 00:13:20.958
all: Aye.
- We got 100%?
00:13:20.959 --> 00:13:22.958
Everybody, put your hand up
that... that going with that.
00:13:22.959 --> 00:13:25.958
- Don\'t even... don\'t... I don\'t
even want to go waste my time
00:13:25.959 --> 00:13:26.959
voting on this,
talking about it.
00:13:26.960 --> 00:13:29.958
- All right.
- I can give you even more.
00:13:29.959 --> 00:13:31.958
- I asked Kim.
00:13:31.959 --> 00:13:34.958
I said, \"How do I sit down
with one of my members
00:13:34.959 --> 00:13:37.958
\"who\'s already scuffling
and making $14.35,
00:13:37.959 --> 00:13:39.958
\"sit at the table
with their family
00:13:39.959 --> 00:13:42.958
\"and got to tell them
that my union...
00:13:42.959 --> 00:13:44.958
\"and I agree...
00:13:44.959 --> 00:13:47.958
To take a $3.35 pay cut?\"
00:13:47.959 --> 00:13:49.541
I asked her that.
00:13:49.542 --> 00:13:50.958
I said I told you guys
00:13:50.959 --> 00:13:53.958
if we negotiated
any kind of agreement,
00:13:53.959 --> 00:13:55.958
it\'s gonna be a livable wage.
00:13:55.959 --> 00:13:57.958
What did she tell us
about a livable wage, Nicole?
00:13:57.959 --> 00:14:00.958
- \"I don\'t care about your guys
having a livable wage.\"
00:14:00.959 --> 00:14:03.124
- Point blank.
00:14:03.125 --> 00:14:04.958
- I mean, why?
00:14:04.959 --> 00:14:05.959
To beat us down, what?
00:14:05.960 --> 00:14:07.958
I mean, this is ridiculous.
- Humiliate us.
00:14:07.959 --> 00:14:09.124
- Why?
- Humiliate us.
00:14:09.125 --> 00:14:12.958
- What? Why?
What... what good is that?
00:14:12.959 --> 00:14:15.959
What... do you think you\'re gonna
feel every day going in to work?
00:14:19.959 --> 00:14:20.959
They don\'t care.
00:14:20.960 --> 00:14:23.833
That\'s the biggest problem.
00:14:23.834 --> 00:14:25.958
- The check we make don\'t even
pay our gas bill already,
00:14:25.959 --> 00:14:29.958
you know, and thank God
the winter over with.
00:14:29.959 --> 00:14:31.958
It\'s crazy.
00:14:31.959 --> 00:14:33.958
- They\'re saying,
\"This is what we need
00:14:33.959 --> 00:14:36.958
to keep Detroit\"... what?
00:14:36.959 --> 00:14:38.833
- Viable.
- Viable.
00:14:38.834 --> 00:14:40.958
- You all should have told them
right then
00:14:40.959 --> 00:14:41.959
to go ahead and close it.
00:14:41.959 --> 00:14:42.959
- Right then.
- No, no, no.
00:14:42.960 --> 00:14:45.958
- No, no, no, no.
Uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh.
00:14:45.959 --> 00:14:47.416
They trying to get us
to say that, brother.
00:14:47.417 --> 00:14:48.958
We won\'t say it.
00:14:48.959 --> 00:14:51.542
We\'re gonna keep negotiating
until we right off the end.
00:14:52.959 --> 00:14:54.958
- I don\'t know how
everybody else feels,
00:14:54.959 --> 00:14:56.958
but I\'m willing to take it
to the hilt,
00:14:56.959 --> 00:14:58.958
take it all the way to...
Take it all the way out.
00:14:58.959 --> 00:15:00.958
If we got to stand out there
come February,
00:15:00.959 --> 00:15:01.959
I\'m willing to stand out there.
00:15:01.960 --> 00:15:03.958
I\'m willing to take it
all the way...
00:15:03.959 --> 00:15:05.416
[people muttering]
00:15:05.417 --> 00:15:07.708
- \'Cause I ain\'t got...
Hey, as far as I feel now,
00:15:07.709 --> 00:15:09.541
I ain\'t got nothing to lose.
00:15:09.542 --> 00:15:10.958
- That\'s right, brother.
00:15:10.959 --> 00:15:11.959
- I ain\'t got nothing to lose.
00:15:11.959 --> 00:15:12.959
- No.
00:15:16.959 --> 00:15:22.708
[somber instrumental music]
00:15:22.709 --> 00:15:23.958
- It is what it is.
00:15:23.959 --> 00:15:26.958
- It ain\'t a pretty sight.
00:15:26.959 --> 00:15:29.958
It\'s not... it doesn\'t sound
too good to the ears.
00:15:29.959 --> 00:15:30.959
- Yeah.
00:15:33.542 --> 00:15:39.292
[music continues]
00:15:43.959 --> 00:15:46.959
[beeping]
00:15:48.959 --> 00:15:52.958
[chains clinking]
00:15:52.959 --> 00:15:55.959
[mechanical whirring]
00:16:11.125 --> 00:16:16.959
[music continues]
00:16:35.834 --> 00:16:41.542
[dreamy instrumental music]
00:16:46.959 --> 00:16:48.958
- [laughs]
00:16:48.959 --> 00:16:51.834
[indistinct chatter]
00:16:55.292 --> 00:16:59.833
[funk music playing]
00:16:59.834 --> 00:17:01.958
- [singing]
If it\'s a good time, I\'m smokin\'
00:17:01.959 --> 00:17:03.958
If it\'s a good time,
I\'m drinkin\'
00:17:03.959 --> 00:17:05.958
If it\'s a good time,
I\'m drinkin\'
00:17:05.959 --> 00:17:07.958
If I want a good time,
I\'m smokin\'
00:17:07.959 --> 00:17:09.958
Good time, I\'m smokin\'
00:17:09.959 --> 00:17:11.958
And if it\'s a good time,
I\'m drinkin\'
00:17:11.959 --> 00:17:14.708
It ain\'t gonna stop me now
00:17:14.709 --> 00:17:15.959
No
00:17:17.959 --> 00:17:18.959
Ain\'t gonna stop me
00:17:20.959 --> 00:17:22.959
Oh, stop
00:17:24.959 --> 00:17:27.958
Come on ain\'t gonna stop me
00:17:27.959 --> 00:17:30.541
Ain\'t gonna stop me now
00:17:30.542 --> 00:17:31.959
No
00:17:33.709 --> 00:17:34.959
Ain\'t no stopping
00:17:36.959 --> 00:17:38.958
Oh, stop
00:17:38.959 --> 00:17:40.958
[cheers and applause]
00:17:40.959 --> 00:17:41.959
- Yeah!
00:17:43.959 --> 00:17:48.958
[singing]
Tell it like it is
00:17:48.959 --> 00:17:49.959
- [...]!
00:17:49.960 --> 00:17:51.291
- All right, all right.
00:17:51.292 --> 00:17:52.958
Who made that originally?
00:17:52.959 --> 00:17:53.959
- [speaking indistinctly]
00:17:53.959 --> 00:17:54.959
- Who made that originally?
00:17:54.960 --> 00:17:56.958
Come on, now.
You know your music, now.
00:17:56.959 --> 00:17:58.958
- Donny!
- Don\'t ask Donny.
00:17:58.959 --> 00:18:00.541
No, you supposed to know.
- I don\'t know.
00:18:00.542 --> 00:18:02.541
- Donny!
- Yeah, get your apron.
00:18:02.542 --> 00:18:05.958
Now, look, you got a wing basket
00:18:05.959 --> 00:18:07.291
and three wings.
00:18:07.292 --> 00:18:08.292
- Okay.
00:18:12.959 --> 00:18:13.959
- You know,
I never could understand
00:18:13.960 --> 00:18:15.958
how those Mexicans roll
this thing.
00:18:15.959 --> 00:18:17.958
This is a hell of a roll
that they do
00:18:17.959 --> 00:18:19.958
when they put this lettuce
in here.
00:18:19.959 --> 00:18:21.958
It\'s a heck of a roll!
00:18:21.959 --> 00:18:23.541
I like the way they do it!
00:18:23.542 --> 00:18:26.958
I\'d be damned if you could ever
undo it, you know?
00:18:26.959 --> 00:18:28.958
You always have to cut it.
00:18:28.959 --> 00:18:30.958
- All right, all right.
00:18:30.959 --> 00:18:33.959
- That\'s better
than the sailor\'s knot.
00:18:40.959 --> 00:18:42.833
You know, I used to have a cook
00:18:42.834 --> 00:18:45.959
back in the days when
we were making it quite a bit.
00:18:47.959 --> 00:18:50.958
And times got so bad
00:18:50.959 --> 00:18:53.958
that I had to use my knowledge.
00:18:53.959 --> 00:18:55.999
\'Course, I love cooking.
00:18:56.000 --> 00:18:58.958
I do it all the time as a hobby.
00:18:58.959 --> 00:19:04.958
[band playing]
00:19:04.959 --> 00:19:07.958
We used to be open
quite frequently in here
00:19:07.959 --> 00:19:10.958
until the recession...
00:19:10.959 --> 00:19:14.958
Or, really, it was a depression
that hit us, truthfully.
00:19:14.959 --> 00:19:16.958
When you really study
that piece,
00:19:16.959 --> 00:19:20.124
we were where we were in 1929.
00:19:20.125 --> 00:19:21.958
They\'re just not saying it,
00:19:21.959 --> 00:19:23.959
\'cause it would scare
the American people.
00:19:28.292 --> 00:19:30.958
I used to have the guys
from the factory...
00:19:30.959 --> 00:19:33.958
They would come down,
and they would order 50 wings
00:19:33.959 --> 00:19:35.958
and, you know,
there\'d be five of them
00:19:35.959 --> 00:19:36.959
sitting around the table.
00:19:36.960 --> 00:19:39.291
They ordered 50 wings, you know.
00:19:39.292 --> 00:19:43.958
And all of that\'s kind of gone,
completely gone.
00:19:43.959 --> 00:19:46.958
Give me another five minutes,
babe, then you\'ll be ready.
00:19:46.959 --> 00:19:48.833
Yeah, they\'ll be ready.
00:19:48.834 --> 00:19:51.958
[band playing]
00:19:51.959 --> 00:19:54.959
But it\'ll come back,
I do believe.
00:19:58.959 --> 00:20:04.959
[ambient instrumental music]
00:20:28.959 --> 00:20:31.958
[Kool & the Gang\'s
\"Hollywood Swinging\" playing]
00:20:31.959 --> 00:20:37.959
[upbeat funk music]
00:20:39.959 --> 00:20:41.959
- [singing] Hey, hey, hey
00:20:43.959 --> 00:20:45.292
What ya got to say?
00:20:48.542 --> 00:20:50.959
Say hey, hey, hey
00:20:52.959 --> 00:20:53.959
What ya got to say?
00:20:56.959 --> 00:21:01.416
Hollywood
00:21:01.417 --> 00:21:02.959
Hollywood swingin\'
00:21:04.959 --> 00:21:06.958
Hollywood
00:21:06.959 --> 00:21:08.958
- It\'s the Mason Radio Show.
Good morning, Detroit.
00:21:08.959 --> 00:21:11.958
We goin\' a little
\"Hollywood Swinging\"!
00:21:11.959 --> 00:21:13.708
Memories and sing-along.
00:21:13.709 --> 00:21:14.833
What you gonna do?
00:21:14.834 --> 00:21:15.958
- [singing] I remember
00:21:15.959 --> 00:21:17.958
- Caller, good morning.
Welcome to the show.
00:21:17.959 --> 00:21:19.958
What are your thoughts here?
00:21:19.959 --> 00:21:22.708
- Well, basically, everybody
is just, you know,
00:21:22.709 --> 00:21:24.958
tired and fed up.
00:21:24.959 --> 00:21:28.416
And basically, it\'s gonna
all blow up and explode.
00:21:28.417 --> 00:21:30.959
The crime in the inner city
has just gone wild.
00:21:33.959 --> 00:21:35.833
I\'d like to see
more city services...
00:21:35.834 --> 00:21:37.958
And that they gonna cut.
00:21:37.959 --> 00:21:38.959
They gonna cut it.
00:21:40.959 --> 00:21:42.958
- Mason, we\'re losing it, man.
00:21:42.959 --> 00:21:44.958
In the \'60s,
you had civil unrest
00:21:44.959 --> 00:21:46.958
because people
couldn\'t take it anymore.
00:21:46.959 --> 00:21:48.833
And we\'re getting
to a tipping point
00:21:48.834 --> 00:21:49.958
in this country.
00:21:49.959 --> 00:21:52.958
We\'ve moved to a have
and have-not society.
00:21:52.959 --> 00:21:55.833
He who controls the gold
runs the show.
00:21:55.834 --> 00:21:58.542
[sirens wailing]
00:22:06.959 --> 00:22:12.959
[woman singing operatically]
00:22:35.959 --> 00:22:41.959
[singing continues]
00:22:47.959 --> 00:22:50.958
[bright orchestral music]
00:22:50.959 --> 00:22:53.959
[cheers and applause]
00:22:59.959 --> 00:23:00.959
- Thank you.
00:23:02.959 --> 00:23:04.958
I have always felt
00:23:04.959 --> 00:23:07.999
that it\'s the arts
that can help revitalize a city.
00:23:08.000 --> 00:23:09.416
Yeah.
00:23:09.417 --> 00:23:11.541
[applause]
00:23:11.542 --> 00:23:14.958
Now, we have
many challenges ahead,
00:23:14.959 --> 00:23:17.958
but we are determined
that we will overcome them
00:23:17.959 --> 00:23:20.958
and that this opera house
will continue to be a home,
00:23:20.959 --> 00:23:23.958
a Mecca for great opera
and dance
00:23:23.959 --> 00:23:25.958
for the next 40 years.
00:23:25.959 --> 00:23:27.958
I won\'t be here,
but I know you will be.
00:23:27.959 --> 00:23:28.999
[applause]
00:23:29.000 --> 00:23:34.959
[ambient instrumental music]
00:23:45.959 --> 00:23:49.708
Everything in Detroit is
at stake.
00:23:49.709 --> 00:23:53.958
This is a city
which is undergoing
00:23:53.959 --> 00:23:56.958
probably one
of the greatest challenges
00:23:56.959 --> 00:23:58.000
of the last century...
00:24:00.959 --> 00:24:02.958
The rise of industry
00:24:02.959 --> 00:24:05.959
and the demise of industry
as we know it.
00:24:07.959 --> 00:24:12.958
I think a lot of other cities
will follow suit.
00:24:12.959 --> 00:24:18.959
[music continues]
00:24:23.959 --> 00:24:24.959
- One.
00:24:24.960 --> 00:24:26.291
Two.
00:24:26.292 --> 00:24:27.958
Three.
00:24:27.959 --> 00:24:28.959
Four.
00:24:28.960 --> 00:24:30.958
Five.
00:24:30.959 --> 00:24:33.959
[static crackling]
00:24:41.959 --> 00:24:44.959
[people talking indistinctly]
00:24:46.959 --> 00:24:49.958
- What we\'re seeing is that
virtually the entire city
00:24:49.959 --> 00:24:53.958
is illustrating some level
of population decline.
00:24:53.959 --> 00:24:56.958
Over the last 50 years,
00:24:56.959 --> 00:24:59.958
we\'ve lost about 50%
of our population.
00:24:59.959 --> 00:25:04.958
If we were at about 1.86 million
in 1955,
00:25:04.959 --> 00:25:09.958
we\'re arguably somewhere between
800,000 and 900,000 today
00:25:09.959 --> 00:25:11.958
within a city of the same size.
00:25:11.959 --> 00:25:14.833
You know,
as the population plummets,
00:25:14.834 --> 00:25:17.958
the number of jobs is actually
decreasing even more.
00:25:17.959 --> 00:25:20.958
I think you\'re probably up
into the 50%
00:25:20.959 --> 00:25:22.292
real unemployment in the city.
00:25:24.959 --> 00:25:27.541
- Even though you may have
some Detroiters
00:25:27.542 --> 00:25:28.958
that get a job in Detroit,
00:25:28.959 --> 00:25:31.541
once they get to a certain level
of income,
00:25:31.542 --> 00:25:32.958
they get the hell
out of town too.
00:25:32.959 --> 00:25:36.958
So, you know, that seems to be
the direction
00:25:36.959 --> 00:25:38.959
that a lot of folks are taking.
00:25:41.959 --> 00:25:43.958
- We have a lot of vacant land.
00:25:43.959 --> 00:25:45.541
You may have a situation
00:25:45.542 --> 00:25:47.833
where you have one home
on an entire block
00:25:47.834 --> 00:25:49.958
or one home on two blocks.
00:25:49.959 --> 00:25:53.416
Out of a city
that is about 139 square miles,
00:25:53.417 --> 00:25:57.958
we\'re looking at 40 square miles
of potentially vacant land.
00:25:57.959 --> 00:25:59.958
One way to put this
into perspective is,
00:25:59.959 --> 00:26:02.958
you can see where they laid
in the city of San Francisco,
00:26:02.959 --> 00:26:05.958
Boston, and Manhattan
in their geographies,
00:26:05.959 --> 00:26:06.959
and now they can actually fit
00:26:06.960 --> 00:26:10.958
within the overall city
of Detroit
00:26:10.959 --> 00:26:14.833
with a lot of space left over,
for that matter.
00:26:14.834 --> 00:26:17.958
Maybe we need to rethink
actually how we develop
00:26:17.959 --> 00:26:20.958
our land use and our land use
policy moving forward.
00:26:20.959 --> 00:26:23.124
- But the reality of thinking
00:26:23.125 --> 00:26:25.958
that we\'re gonna repopulize
this area
00:26:25.959 --> 00:26:28.958
in significant numbers
anytime in the near term...
00:26:28.959 --> 00:26:31.958
I don\'t see that as my reality.
00:26:31.959 --> 00:26:36.124
When do we think
we\'ll be able to identify
00:26:36.125 --> 00:26:38.958
those neighborhoods we deem
to be stable,
00:26:38.959 --> 00:26:41.958
where you really want
to make new investments?
00:26:41.959 --> 00:26:45.833
We have to start
doing something.
00:26:45.834 --> 00:26:46.958
That\'s got to happen.
00:26:46.959 --> 00:26:49.958
Otherwise you\'re gonna...
We\'ll lose the people.
00:26:49.959 --> 00:26:50.959
- Right.
00:26:50.959 --> 00:26:51.959
Right.
00:26:52.959 --> 00:26:58.959
[gritty percussive music]
00:27:09.959 --> 00:27:15.959
[music continues]
00:27:28.959 --> 00:27:34.959
[music continues]
00:27:52.292 --> 00:27:53.959
[clattering]
00:27:55.959 --> 00:28:01.959
[up-tempo fractured music]
00:28:08.959 --> 00:28:12.958
- Could I get a small coffee
with one cream?
00:28:12.959 --> 00:28:13.959
Oh, duh.
00:28:14.959 --> 00:28:16.416
How\'ve you been?
00:28:16.417 --> 00:28:17.417
You doin\' okay?
00:28:17.417 --> 00:28:18.417
- Yeah.
00:28:19.959 --> 00:28:21.958
- This evening
at Greater Grace Temple.
00:28:21.959 --> 00:28:23.958
All of the public meetings
are scheduled
00:28:23.959 --> 00:28:24.959
for Thursday and Saturday.
00:28:24.960 --> 00:28:27.958
There will also be some more
later this month.
00:28:27.959 --> 00:28:29.958
In light of today\'s first set
of public meetings
00:28:29.959 --> 00:28:32.958
with the Mayor\'s
Detroit Works Project,
00:28:32.959 --> 00:28:33.959
we want to ask you,
00:28:33.960 --> 00:28:36.958
would you move your home
to rightsize
00:28:36.959 --> 00:28:38.958
and save the city you live in?
00:28:38.959 --> 00:28:41.959
[indistinct chatter]
00:28:43.959 --> 00:28:45.416
- This is an insult!
00:28:45.417 --> 00:28:48.958
[all yelling at once]
00:28:48.959 --> 00:28:49.959
- We did not come here...
00:28:49.960 --> 00:28:53.958
We did not come here
to talk among ourselves.
00:28:53.959 --> 00:28:55.999
We came here to talk
to the Mayor.
00:28:56.000 --> 00:28:58.291
We could\'ve stayed at home
and talked to ourselves.
00:28:58.292 --> 00:29:01.959
- Straight mayhem and chaos
at a town hall meeting.
00:29:06.959 --> 00:29:08.958
Is this honestly how
you all plan to do this?
00:29:08.959 --> 00:29:10.958
- Mm-hmm.
- You\'ve got people scattered.
00:29:10.959 --> 00:29:12.958
And look, doesn\'t it look like
the city of Detroit to you?
00:29:12.959 --> 00:29:14.708
People are looking for answers.
00:29:14.709 --> 00:29:15.958
I don\'t know where I want to go.
00:29:15.959 --> 00:29:16.959
I don\'t know.
00:29:16.960 --> 00:29:18.958
This is, like,
completely not even...
00:29:18.959 --> 00:29:20.958
I can\'t believe intelligent
minds put this together.
00:29:20.959 --> 00:29:23.708
Like, I\'m angry.
00:29:23.709 --> 00:29:24.959
It\'s not gonna do us any good.
00:29:28.959 --> 00:29:29.999
- I\'m trying to understand
00:29:30.000 --> 00:29:32.958
with the neighborhood,
why do we have to move?
00:29:32.959 --> 00:29:35.999
Why can\'t you build around us
and do what you need to do
00:29:36.000 --> 00:29:38.958
instead of trying to one,
burn us out,
00:29:38.959 --> 00:29:40.958
and two, trying to take us out,
00:29:40.959 --> 00:29:42.958
and then thirdly, I want to know
00:29:42.959 --> 00:29:45.958
what is gonna be done
to that land
00:29:45.959 --> 00:29:46.959
once you move us out?
00:29:46.960 --> 00:29:48.958
Because it seems like
your downsizing
00:29:48.959 --> 00:29:51.541
is just another form
of segregation.
00:29:51.542 --> 00:29:54.541
And-and-and
in my 40 years of age,
00:29:54.542 --> 00:29:56.958
I thought my mama and them
already been through that.
00:29:56.959 --> 00:29:58.958
And I don\'t want to have to
go through it again.
00:29:58.959 --> 00:30:01.958
And-and if-if
we don\'t understand
00:30:01.959 --> 00:30:03.958
that we who live
in the city of Detroit
00:30:03.959 --> 00:30:04.959
have to stick together
00:30:04.960 --> 00:30:07.959
or they\'re gonna take
this city away from us.
00:30:09.292 --> 00:30:11.958
[indistinct chatter]
00:30:11.959 --> 00:30:13.999
- 20 years from now,
00:30:14.000 --> 00:30:16.958
I won\'t know what the city
will look like
00:30:16.959 --> 00:30:18.958
unless the good Lord
let me live.
00:30:18.959 --> 00:30:20.958
I\'m 83 years old,
00:30:20.959 --> 00:30:22.958
but this is our city.
00:30:22.959 --> 00:30:24.958
We don\'t have to stay in it.
00:30:24.959 --> 00:30:26.958
We can go somewhere else.
00:30:26.959 --> 00:30:28.958
But if the good Lord
let me live,
00:30:28.959 --> 00:30:30.958
I\'ll die in Detroit,
00:30:30.959 --> 00:30:32.541
because this is my city.
00:30:32.542 --> 00:30:35.542
[applause]
00:30:38.959 --> 00:30:40.559
- Could you come
a little closer, please?
00:30:42.959 --> 00:30:46.958
- And basically this is
about downsizing the city
00:30:46.959 --> 00:30:48.999
and what we can do
with the land?
00:30:49.000 --> 00:30:51.958
- No, I think we need to forget
the word about \"downsizing.\"
00:30:51.959 --> 00:30:53.958
We\'re not downsizing the city.
00:30:53.959 --> 00:30:55.958
The city will be
139 square miles
00:30:55.959 --> 00:30:58.291
whenever we finish
with this process.
00:30:58.292 --> 00:31:01.958
So we\'ve got to repurpose
the land.
00:31:01.959 --> 00:31:03.958
- Are you saying that no one
will be uprooted
00:31:03.959 --> 00:31:05.958
or forced to leave their home?
00:31:05.959 --> 00:31:06.959
- I\'m not saying that.
00:31:06.960 --> 00:31:08.958
- Are you gonna offer
a tax incentive
00:31:08.959 --> 00:31:10.958
or some kind
of financial benefit?
00:31:10.959 --> 00:31:11.959
- It\'s gonna be difficult.
The city is broke.
00:31:11.960 --> 00:31:13.958
I don\'t know how many times
I have to say that.
00:31:13.959 --> 00:31:15.541
I mean, we\'ve got
a financial crisis
00:31:15.542 --> 00:31:16.958
we\'re dealing with,
00:31:16.959 --> 00:31:18.958
and I don\'t want people
to sit back and think
00:31:18.959 --> 00:31:20.958
there\'s a bucket
of money somewhere,
00:31:20.959 --> 00:31:22.541
and they... all they have to do
is sit and wait
00:31:22.542 --> 00:31:23.958
until we offer them that.
00:31:23.959 --> 00:31:25.959
That\'s... that\'s not our case.
00:31:27.959 --> 00:31:33.834
[somber instrumental music]
00:31:41.959 --> 00:31:44.959
[dog barking]
00:31:50.959 --> 00:31:52.124
- Look, the dog pullin\' him.
00:31:52.125 --> 00:31:54.542
He ain\'t got no control
over the dog, man.
00:31:56.959 --> 00:31:57.959
[chuckles]
What are you doin\'?
00:31:57.960 --> 00:31:59.958
Pants about to fall down
and [...].
00:31:59.959 --> 00:32:01.124
[chuckles]
00:32:01.125 --> 00:32:02.958
His pants at knee level.
00:32:02.959 --> 00:32:03.959
[chuckles]
00:32:06.959 --> 00:32:08.958
[laughter]
00:32:08.959 --> 00:32:10.958
You said it, man.
00:32:10.959 --> 00:32:11.959
- Got to be, right?
00:32:15.000 --> 00:32:19.124
- If I could have Detroit back
like it was
00:32:19.125 --> 00:32:22.958
when I was younger,
before all the craziness,
00:32:22.959 --> 00:32:25.958
you know what I\'m sayin\',
00:32:25.959 --> 00:32:29.124
I would consolidate the city
in a hot second.
00:32:29.125 --> 00:32:31.958
It\'d be half a city.
00:32:31.959 --> 00:32:33.958
Period.
00:32:33.959 --> 00:32:36.958
- Man, [...] the
consolidation [...].
00:32:36.959 --> 00:32:38.958
Man, I don\'t agree with it.
I really don\'t.
00:32:38.959 --> 00:32:41.541
I mean, I know what
he tryin\' to do,
00:32:41.542 --> 00:32:43.958
but it can never work.
00:32:43.959 --> 00:32:46.124
- I don\'t think that
it\'s gonna never get done.
00:32:46.125 --> 00:32:49.708
Like, most stuff don\'t get done,
you know what I\'m sayin\'?
00:32:49.709 --> 00:32:52.541
But I think
00:32:52.542 --> 00:32:54.958
it\'ll be a good idea,
you know what I\'m sayin\'?
00:32:54.959 --> 00:32:56.958
- Mm-hmm.
00:32:56.959 --> 00:33:01.958
- What the... what the [...]
is all these damn gardens?
00:33:01.959 --> 00:33:03.958
They want to put... make...
What is you talkin\' about,
00:33:03.959 --> 00:33:05.958
we want to make gardens
all around the city?
00:33:05.959 --> 00:33:06.959
- Yeah, depending
on where you live,
00:33:06.960 --> 00:33:08.708
you gonna be buildin\' a garden.
00:33:08.709 --> 00:33:09.958
- We gonna build gardens
every-[...]-where
00:33:09.959 --> 00:33:11.958
in the city, man.
00:33:11.959 --> 00:33:14.833
That\'s some [...],
you know what I\'m sayin\'?
00:33:14.834 --> 00:33:17.958
What, is you gonna turn Detroit
into a farm now?
00:33:17.959 --> 00:33:18.959
You know what I\'m sayin\'?
00:33:18.959 --> 00:33:19.959
You want to turn Detroit
into a farm.
00:33:19.960 --> 00:33:21.958
- [...] gonna be fightin\'.
00:33:21.959 --> 00:33:24.958
Like, they gonna be feelin\'
like, \"This is my garden.\"
00:33:24.959 --> 00:33:26.958
They gonna come out
with the burner
00:33:26.959 --> 00:33:27.959
and like,
\"Put my tomato down!\"
00:33:27.960 --> 00:33:29.291
- This is... this is...
This is crazy,
00:33:29.292 --> 00:33:30.958
you know what I\'m sayin\'?
00:33:30.959 --> 00:33:32.958
- \"Drop the [...] tomato
right now
00:33:32.959 --> 00:33:33.959
or I\'m gonna shoot!\"
00:33:33.960 --> 00:33:35.124
[laughter]
00:33:35.125 --> 00:33:36.959
- You stupid, dawg.
You stupid.
00:33:38.834 --> 00:33:41.958
- This used to be, like,
the cream of the crop.
00:33:41.959 --> 00:33:45.416
Everybody came here
from down south for jobs,
00:33:45.417 --> 00:33:47.291
you know what I\'m sayin\'?
00:33:47.292 --> 00:33:49.959
Everybody had a job
over at Chrysler.
00:33:52.417 --> 00:33:53.958
Look at this [...].
00:33:53.959 --> 00:33:57.958
Man, it just look like somebody
just dropped a bomb out here.
00:33:57.959 --> 00:33:59.958
You say,
\"What happened up here, man?\"
00:33:59.959 --> 00:34:00.959
- [scoffs]
00:34:00.960 --> 00:34:03.959
[dog barking]
00:34:07.959 --> 00:34:14.958
[ambient instrumental music]
00:34:14.959 --> 00:34:16.416
- There.
00:34:16.417 --> 00:34:20.958
Doggone spiders and everything
had a home up in here.
00:34:20.959 --> 00:34:21.959
Wasps.
00:34:25.959 --> 00:34:28.958
But it\'s time for them to go.
00:34:28.959 --> 00:34:30.958
They have to find another home.
00:34:30.959 --> 00:34:32.417
Sorry about that.
00:34:34.959 --> 00:34:37.416
[power tool buzzing]
00:34:37.417 --> 00:34:39.958
So we gonna be finished
with that today?
00:34:39.959 --> 00:34:41.958
- I just need to go over.
I just started helping Mitch.
00:34:41.959 --> 00:34:43.958
- Okay, well, one of you guys
probably need to be working
00:34:43.959 --> 00:34:48.291
on the windows.
00:34:48.292 --> 00:34:54.958
This house over here was vacant.
00:34:54.959 --> 00:34:56.958
Somebody lost it for taxes.
00:34:56.959 --> 00:34:59.958
And it belonged to the city,
00:34:59.959 --> 00:35:01.958
so they let... just let it
sit there,
00:35:01.959 --> 00:35:05.958
and these pyromaniacs come by
and burn it up.
00:35:05.959 --> 00:35:08.958
And this is repeated
all over this city.
00:35:08.959 --> 00:35:11.958
You got these guys
who love fires.
00:35:11.959 --> 00:35:12.959
You know, they set the fires,
00:35:12.960 --> 00:35:14.958
and they go somewhere
and masturbate.
00:35:14.959 --> 00:35:17.958
You know, just sick.
00:35:17.959 --> 00:35:19.958
You know, they get thrills
out of that for some reason.
00:35:19.959 --> 00:35:21.958
I don\'t know...
Just sick.
00:35:21.959 --> 00:35:22.959
Got some sick people in America,
00:35:22.960 --> 00:35:24.541
but they have a right
to be sick.
00:35:24.542 --> 00:35:26.959
I defend their right to be sick.
00:35:28.834 --> 00:35:29.958
Just need some help.
00:35:29.959 --> 00:35:33.958
But anyway, we then...
We own this house here.
00:35:33.959 --> 00:35:37.958
And this house was getting ready
to be lost
00:35:37.959 --> 00:35:40.124
for taxation purposes.
00:35:40.125 --> 00:35:42.959
So for $6,000,
I got the property.
00:35:46.959 --> 00:35:51.999
[funky music playing]
00:35:52.000 --> 00:35:53.958
All right, you ladies
take care of yourselves.
00:35:53.959 --> 00:35:54.959
- You do the same.
00:35:54.960 --> 00:35:56.958
- All right.
00:35:56.959 --> 00:35:58.958
Mr. Brooks.
- What\'s up?
00:35:58.959 --> 00:36:00.958
- You leavin\' tonight, sir?
00:36:00.959 --> 00:36:01.959
- Yeah, time to go.
00:36:01.960 --> 00:36:03.958
- All right, my brother.
- [laughs]
00:36:03.959 --> 00:36:04.959
- You have a good night, now.
00:36:04.960 --> 00:36:08.416
- Okay.
- Sharp dresser, isn\'t he?
00:36:08.417 --> 00:36:09.958
- I\'m telling you, man.
- Brooks\' sugar-sharp.
00:36:09.959 --> 00:36:11.958
- I want to be just like him.
00:36:11.959 --> 00:36:13.958
- My size, and you give me
them shoes, man!
00:36:13.959 --> 00:36:15.958
[laughter]
00:36:15.959 --> 00:36:17.958
- Look at him.
- Brooks\' sugar-sharp.
00:36:17.959 --> 00:36:19.958
He gonna tell you he worked
a number of years
00:36:19.959 --> 00:36:20.959
in the plant for them.
00:36:20.959 --> 00:36:21.959
Right, Brooks?
00:36:21.959 --> 00:36:22.959
- [shouts indistinctly]
- [laughs]
00:36:22.960 --> 00:36:24.958
He worked a lot of years
in the plant...
00:36:24.959 --> 00:36:25.959
- Lot of years, lot of years.
00:36:25.960 --> 00:36:27.541
- Be able to get that.
00:36:27.542 --> 00:36:28.958
- Yeah, he got the car
matchin\' the hat.
00:36:28.959 --> 00:36:32.833
- 18 hours a day that man worked
in that plant.
00:36:32.834 --> 00:36:34.959
- Yeah.
He deserves it.
00:36:35.959 --> 00:36:41.959
[ambient percussive music]
00:36:45.959 --> 00:36:46.959
- Gavo!
- Yeah?
00:36:46.960 --> 00:36:49.958
- 7:30 tomorrow.
- Yeah.
00:36:49.959 --> 00:36:55.709
[music continues]
00:36:57.959 --> 00:37:01.958
- You know, at one time,
they had turned this sign off.
00:37:01.959 --> 00:37:03.958
They had it completely off
00:37:03.959 --> 00:37:06.959
when General Motors
went bankrupt.
00:37:10.959 --> 00:37:12.958
It\'s a huge plant.
00:37:12.959 --> 00:37:14.958
And we\'re just five blocks
from there.
00:37:14.959 --> 00:37:18.958
Only a short distance is
the Raven Lounge,
00:37:18.959 --> 00:37:21.958
Detroit House of Blues.
00:37:21.959 --> 00:37:24.541
Now they\'re making the new Volt,
00:37:24.542 --> 00:37:26.958
the new electric car,
the battery car.
00:37:26.959 --> 00:37:29.124
And I\'m waiting on them
to come back,
00:37:29.125 --> 00:37:30.959
\'cause my business
will come back.
00:37:35.959 --> 00:37:41.959
[music continues]
00:37:53.959 --> 00:37:59.959
[tense instrumental music]
00:38:08.959 --> 00:38:10.958
[indistinct radio transmission]
00:38:10.959 --> 00:38:17.291
[music continues]
00:38:17.292 --> 00:38:18.958
[indistinct chatter]
00:38:18.959 --> 00:38:21.708
[phone ringing]
00:38:21.709 --> 00:38:22.958
- Local 22.
00:38:22.959 --> 00:38:26.124
- Hi.
Do we have vision?
00:38:26.125 --> 00:38:27.958
- Do you have vision?
00:38:27.959 --> 00:38:30.833
- You know, eye care
to get glasses?
00:38:30.834 --> 00:38:31.958
- No, we don\'t have it.
00:38:31.959 --> 00:38:34.958
You know, we lost that
in order to get the money
00:38:34.959 --> 00:38:36.958
from the government.
00:38:36.959 --> 00:38:39.291
We had to give back the vision
and dental for the retirees.
00:38:39.292 --> 00:38:40.958
Where did you work at?
00:38:40.959 --> 00:38:42.999
- I worked the Cadillac plant.
- All right.
00:38:43.000 --> 00:38:44.958
You know who you talkin\' to,
don\'t you?
00:38:44.959 --> 00:38:47.958
- You sound familiar.
I just can\'t think.
00:38:47.959 --> 00:38:49.958
- Uh, this is George.
00:38:49.959 --> 00:38:52.958
- Yeah, okay, okay.
What are you doing now?
00:38:52.959 --> 00:38:53.959
- I\'m President.
00:38:53.960 --> 00:38:55.291
- Yeah?
00:38:55.292 --> 00:38:56.958
Well, you\'ve been President
for a while.
00:38:56.959 --> 00:38:58.291
That\'s a good thing.
00:38:58.292 --> 00:39:00.416
- Yeah, I know who you are.
[chuckles]
00:39:00.417 --> 00:39:01.958
- Yeah.
- I know who you are.
00:39:01.959 --> 00:39:03.958
- Well, all right.
How have things changed?
00:39:03.959 --> 00:39:05.958
Have they changed very much?
00:39:05.959 --> 00:39:06.999
- Oh, yeah,
they changed a lot, sweetheart.
00:39:07.000 --> 00:39:08.958
They have changed a lot.
00:39:08.959 --> 00:39:10.958
- Have they?
- Yes, they have.
00:39:10.959 --> 00:39:12.958
- Oh, Lord.
00:39:12.959 --> 00:39:15.708
- But we... but we gonna be fine.
00:39:15.709 --> 00:39:18.541
- Well, is it gettin\' better,
or is it gettin\' worse?
00:39:18.542 --> 00:39:21.291
- Well, this can\'t get no worse,
so it\'s got to get better.
00:39:21.292 --> 00:39:23.958
- Okay, well,
I\'m prayin\' for everybody.
00:39:23.959 --> 00:39:24.959
I can tell you.
- All right.
00:39:24.960 --> 00:39:27.958
So make sure you call
on Thursday, okay?
00:39:27.959 --> 00:39:28.959
- I will.
- Okay, sweetheart.
00:39:28.960 --> 00:39:31.416
I\'ll talk at you.
- Okay.
00:39:31.417 --> 00:39:33.958
- All right, bye-bye.
- Good-bye.
00:39:33.959 --> 00:39:36.541
- All day long.
00:39:36.542 --> 00:39:38.422
They want to know
about the health care, though.
00:39:41.959 --> 00:39:43.708
During the World War II,
00:39:43.709 --> 00:39:47.958
America was like, \"Bah.\"
00:39:47.959 --> 00:39:52.708
We built... we built war machines
for the world, right?
00:39:52.709 --> 00:39:53.958
Right over here is where
I used to...
00:39:53.959 --> 00:39:55.958
Where I hired in, at Fleetwood.
00:39:55.959 --> 00:39:56.999
They turned that...
They turned that
00:39:57.000 --> 00:39:59.958
from an automobile factory
to building airplanes
00:39:59.959 --> 00:40:01.958
right there on 4th Street.
00:40:01.959 --> 00:40:03.958
We built everything
and put them on a ship
00:40:03.959 --> 00:40:06.958
and shipped them to England
and everywhere.
00:40:06.959 --> 00:40:07.959
Yeah, I know what we did.
00:40:07.960 --> 00:40:09.958
Keep up with that history.
00:40:09.959 --> 00:40:13.958
Now we can\'t even buy
an American-made washing machine
00:40:13.959 --> 00:40:15.959
or an iron.
00:40:16.959 --> 00:40:18.958
Hm?
00:40:18.959 --> 00:40:21.958
So where did all... where did all
our manufacturing base go?
00:40:21.959 --> 00:40:23.958
Where did it all go?
00:40:23.959 --> 00:40:24.959
Because we built everything.
00:40:24.960 --> 00:40:27.958
We built everything.
00:40:27.959 --> 00:40:29.958
Everything.
00:40:29.959 --> 00:40:30.959
America did.
00:40:32.542 --> 00:40:34.958
We have a standard of living
in America
00:40:34.959 --> 00:40:37.958
that the working guy provided...
A standard of living,
00:40:37.959 --> 00:40:39.958
which is eroding now.
00:40:39.959 --> 00:40:43.958
But it\'s a standard of living
that the working guy...
00:40:43.959 --> 00:40:45.959
And it started right here
in Detroit.
00:40:47.959 --> 00:40:50.958
Right here in Detroit,
a middle class.
00:40:50.959 --> 00:40:51.959
It started right here.
00:40:51.959 --> 00:40:52.959
Everybody know it;
00:40:52.960 --> 00:40:54.958
we just got to face up to it.
00:40:54.959 --> 00:40:57.541
So we\'re able to send
our kids to school.
00:40:57.542 --> 00:40:58.958
We\'re able to set up
a little bit of money.
00:40:58.959 --> 00:41:00.999
Some of our guys was able enough
to get a little place
00:41:01.000 --> 00:41:02.958
up north or whatever.
00:41:02.959 --> 00:41:04.958
Middle class.
00:41:04.959 --> 00:41:07.291
Got a boat...
00:41:07.292 --> 00:41:08.958
You understand what I\'m sayin\'?
00:41:08.959 --> 00:41:10.708
Middle class.
00:41:10.709 --> 00:41:11.959
Middle class.
00:41:13.959 --> 00:41:15.000
\"Leave it to Beaver.\"
00:41:19.959 --> 00:41:21.541
Little white house,
picket fence.
00:41:21.542 --> 00:41:22.958
You know \"Leave it to Beaver.\"
00:41:22.959 --> 00:41:24.958
Wasn\'t that the middle class?
00:41:24.959 --> 00:41:25.959
Come on, now!
00:41:25.960 --> 00:41:27.958
We lookin\' at it on TV, right?
00:41:27.959 --> 00:41:29.958
Weren\'t... weren\'t we?
00:41:29.959 --> 00:41:32.958
Then we... then we see it comin\'
into our lives.
00:41:32.959 --> 00:41:34.959
There it is, the middle class.
00:41:37.959 --> 00:41:43.959
[effervescent percussive music]
00:41:55.959 --> 00:42:01.959
[music continues]
00:42:07.959 --> 00:42:13.959
[music continues]
00:42:16.292 --> 00:42:22.000
[somber ambient music
with radio static]
00:42:32.959 --> 00:42:35.959
[birds chirping]
00:42:45.417 --> 00:42:48.125
[metal clattering]
00:43:14.959 --> 00:43:15.959
[man shouts indistinctly]
00:43:18.959 --> 00:43:21.958
- It\'s gonna fall.
That\'s gonna hit the ground.
00:43:21.959 --> 00:43:23.958
That\'s gonna hit the ground.
00:43:23.959 --> 00:43:24.999
- Needs to so it don\'t go off
in the street.
00:43:25.000 --> 00:43:26.958
Goin\' this way with it.
00:43:26.959 --> 00:43:27.959
- It\'s gonna hit the ground.
00:43:27.960 --> 00:43:29.959
[people talking indistinctly]
00:43:33.959 --> 00:43:35.541
- Tell him to pull it that way!
00:43:35.542 --> 00:43:36.999
[metal clattering]
00:43:37.000 --> 00:43:38.958
There it goes!
00:43:38.959 --> 00:43:40.958
[metal clattering]
00:43:40.959 --> 00:43:42.958
- Stop.
Just hold on, buddy!
00:43:42.959 --> 00:43:44.541
Top beam right there,
the second one...
00:43:44.542 --> 00:43:46.124
- Timber!
00:43:46.125 --> 00:43:47.959
[metal clatters]
00:43:50.959 --> 00:43:53.958
[engine revs]
00:43:53.959 --> 00:43:54.959
- Whoa!
Hey, hey, hey, hey!
00:43:54.960 --> 00:43:57.833
The ladder rack!
- The ladder rack!
00:43:57.834 --> 00:43:58.999
[tires squealing]
00:43:59.000 --> 00:44:02.833
[people talking indistinctly]
00:44:02.834 --> 00:44:03.958
- Is it coming?
00:44:03.959 --> 00:44:04.959
- Yeah!
00:44:05.959 --> 00:44:08.958
[engine revs, tires squealing]
00:44:08.959 --> 00:44:14.959
[ambient instrumental music]
00:44:30.959 --> 00:44:33.959
[blowtorch fizzing]
00:44:36.959 --> 00:44:37.959
- Pass it back.
00:44:40.959 --> 00:44:41.959
- Gotta get it, lift it up.
00:44:41.960 --> 00:44:43.124
Yeah, there you go.
00:44:43.125 --> 00:44:44.708
Down and push.
00:44:44.709 --> 00:44:45.709
[metal clattering]
00:44:45.710 --> 00:44:46.958
- [grunts]
00:44:46.959 --> 00:44:49.999
- Heaviest [...] piece
we got all day right here.
00:44:50.000 --> 00:44:52.959
[...], drop it on my hands
one more time, [...].
00:45:10.542 --> 00:45:12.958
- We live on a nice block.
00:45:12.959 --> 00:45:15.958
I mean, this whole neighborhood
is probably 100 houses
00:45:15.959 --> 00:45:19.416
from [...] 20 blocks that way,
20 blocks that way.
00:45:19.417 --> 00:45:21.958
- Full of hookers and bums.
00:45:21.959 --> 00:45:22.959
- Drugs and money.
00:45:26.292 --> 00:45:28.958
- No one will mess with you
around here.
00:45:28.959 --> 00:45:30.958
- Police came earlier
00:45:30.959 --> 00:45:32.958
just to make sure
we wasn\'t stealin\' nothin\'
00:45:32.959 --> 00:45:34.958
and we was careful.
00:45:34.959 --> 00:45:35.959
They said if they had
any complaints
00:45:35.960 --> 00:45:37.958
they\'d have to run us off,
00:45:37.959 --> 00:45:39.959
but we was... we was
all right for now.
00:45:41.542 --> 00:45:42.958
- Easy money.
00:45:42.959 --> 00:45:43.959
It\'s easy money.
00:45:43.960 --> 00:45:46.291
- And the economy\'s [...].
00:45:46.292 --> 00:45:47.959
- Can\'t get a job.
00:45:48.959 --> 00:45:50.958
- [spits]
00:45:50.959 --> 00:45:52.999
- For this still,
we\'re getting 11¢ a pound.
00:45:53.000 --> 00:45:56.959
But if you\'re taking copper,
you get, like, $2.50 a pound.
00:45:58.959 --> 00:46:00.958
- It goes somewhere
and gets melted.
00:46:00.959 --> 00:46:02.958
- It go all over or wherever.
00:46:02.959 --> 00:46:03.959
It go wherever.
00:46:03.960 --> 00:46:05.124
China.
00:46:05.125 --> 00:46:06.958
- Why is it going to China?
00:46:06.959 --> 00:46:08.958
- So they can make [...]
and send it back here
00:46:08.959 --> 00:46:10.708
and sell it for more.
00:46:10.709 --> 00:46:12.958
[chuckles]
00:46:12.959 --> 00:46:18.959
[ambient instrumental music]
00:46:42.834 --> 00:46:45.542
[semi truck approaching]
00:46:46.959 --> 00:46:49.958
[ambient instrumental music]
00:46:49.959 --> 00:46:50.999
- We... we got
into this problem
00:46:51.000 --> 00:46:53.958
by doing the most dangerous
thing a country can do.
00:46:53.959 --> 00:46:55.958
We misread our environment
at the end of the Cold War.
00:46:55.959 --> 00:46:57.958
We thought we could actually
put our feet up.
00:46:57.959 --> 00:47:00.958
In fact, we unleashed a world
with 2 billion more people
00:47:00.959 --> 00:47:02.959
just like us... competitors.
00:47:05.542 --> 00:47:08.958
- America has been
an exceptional country,
00:47:08.959 --> 00:47:11.958
but exceptionalism
is not a distinction
00:47:11.959 --> 00:47:15.958
bestowed on a country once
that it gets to keep for life
00:47:15.959 --> 00:47:17.958
like an honorary degree.
00:47:17.959 --> 00:47:20.959
Exceptionalism has
to be earned every day.
00:47:23.125 --> 00:47:24.958
- I actually think that we need
00:47:24.959 --> 00:47:26.958
to start looking
at other countries
00:47:26.959 --> 00:47:28.959
and looking
at what makes them successful.
00:47:31.959 --> 00:47:35.958
- A country that manufactures
things has power.
00:47:35.959 --> 00:47:37.959
A service country,
you don\'t have no power.
00:47:39.959 --> 00:47:41.958
Now, how did we let that happen?
00:47:41.959 --> 00:47:43.958
Greed?
00:47:43.959 --> 00:47:46.124
Sure, greed.
00:47:46.125 --> 00:47:48.959
We all can take a little blame,
can\'t we?
00:47:51.959 --> 00:47:53.958
- Look at the country today
to what\'s going on.
00:47:53.959 --> 00:47:55.958
We\'re having a financial crisis,
00:47:55.959 --> 00:47:57.959
and our politicians
are having an election.
00:48:04.959 --> 00:48:07.959
[bird cawing]
00:48:08.959 --> 00:48:14.959
[muffled music playing]
00:48:19.959 --> 00:48:21.541
[band playing \"It\'s a Man\'s
Man\'s Man\'s World\"]
00:48:21.542 --> 00:48:22.958
- [singing] Shake it to the left
00:48:22.959 --> 00:48:24.958
Shake it to the right
00:48:24.959 --> 00:48:26.958
Shake it in the middle
00:48:26.959 --> 00:48:28.958
Shake it all night
00:48:28.959 --> 00:48:29.959
Ow!
00:48:29.959 --> 00:48:30.959
- Whoo!
00:48:30.960 --> 00:48:33.958
- [singing]
And it\'s a man\'s world
00:48:33.959 --> 00:48:34.959
But you know what?
00:48:34.960 --> 00:48:36.958
It wouldn\'t be nothin\'
00:48:36.959 --> 00:48:38.958
Wouldn\'t be nothin\'
00:48:38.959 --> 00:48:40.958
Wouldn\'t be nothin\'
00:48:40.959 --> 00:48:44.958
Nothin\' without a woman
00:48:44.959 --> 00:48:45.959
or my girl
00:48:47.959 --> 00:48:49.708
Ow!
00:48:49.709 --> 00:48:51.958
This is a man\'s...
00:48:51.959 --> 00:48:53.708
[squawks]
00:48:53.709 --> 00:48:54.958
This is a man\'s...
00:48:54.959 --> 00:48:55.959
Right here.
Here we go.
00:48:55.959 --> 00:48:56.959
Gonna give you a few more.
00:48:56.959 --> 00:48:57.959
[singing]
It\'s a man\'s
00:48:57.960 --> 00:48:59.958
It\'s a man\'s
00:48:59.959 --> 00:49:01.958
It\'s a man\'s world
00:49:01.959 --> 00:49:04.958
But it wouldn\'t be nothin\'
00:49:04.959 --> 00:49:06.959
without a woman or a girl
00:49:08.959 --> 00:49:13.958
[music playing]
00:49:13.959 --> 00:49:15.958
[shouts indistinctly]
00:49:15.959 --> 00:49:17.124
Have mercy!
00:49:17.125 --> 00:49:19.959
[shouting indistinctly]
00:49:26.417 --> 00:49:27.958
- You tell your dad I said hi.
00:49:27.959 --> 00:49:29.958
- Okay, I will.
- All right.
00:49:29.959 --> 00:49:31.291
And, hey, you tell your daddy
I said also
00:49:31.292 --> 00:49:32.958
to don\'t forget my roof!
00:49:32.959 --> 00:49:34.958
- I will.
I\'ll tell him.
00:49:34.959 --> 00:49:36.291
- All right, man.
- I\'ll tell him.
00:49:36.292 --> 00:49:37.958
- You have a good night, now.
00:49:37.959 --> 00:49:39.959
- Happy birthday.
- Drink some water, boy!
00:49:51.959 --> 00:49:52.959
- A job is a right!
00:49:52.960 --> 00:49:55.958
We\'re gonna...
- Fight, fight, fight!
00:49:55.959 --> 00:49:57.958
- A job is a right!
00:49:57.959 --> 00:49:59.958
- We\'re gonna...
- Fight, fight, fight!
00:49:59.959 --> 00:50:02.958
- The people have spoken!
00:50:02.959 --> 00:50:05.958
All: Keep the plants open!
00:50:05.959 --> 00:50:08.958
- We begin where
everything begins...
00:50:08.959 --> 00:50:11.958
[mysterious twinkling music]
00:50:11.959 --> 00:50:12.959
With nature.
00:50:15.959 --> 00:50:17.416
Wind...
00:50:17.417 --> 00:50:19.833
Water...
00:50:19.834 --> 00:50:20.959
Air.
00:50:24.417 --> 00:50:26.959
Surround yourself
with pure luxury.
00:50:29.959 --> 00:50:33.958
An experience of sheer joy is
at your fingertips.
00:50:33.959 --> 00:50:36.958
[dramatic music playing]
00:50:36.959 --> 00:50:38.959
Release that power.
00:50:43.709 --> 00:50:44.958
- The Volt E-REV
is symbolic
00:50:44.959 --> 00:50:47.958
to Chevrolet\'s strong commitment
to the future.
00:50:47.959 --> 00:50:50.958
Main benefits include
reduced petroleum consumption...
00:50:50.959 --> 00:50:51.959
- I like it.
00:50:51.960 --> 00:50:53.958
- Energy diversification.
00:50:53.959 --> 00:50:55.958
The Volt is just
one more shining example...
00:50:55.959 --> 00:50:57.416
- How... how far will that go?
00:50:57.417 --> 00:50:58.958
- What\'s that?
- On a charge.
00:50:58.959 --> 00:51:01.541
- On a charge it will travel
25 to 50 miles
00:51:01.542 --> 00:51:02.958
completely electric.
00:51:02.959 --> 00:51:04.958
- When do you think that
the engineers are gonna get it
00:51:04.959 --> 00:51:07.958
up to, let\'s say,
500 to 1,000 miles?
00:51:07.959 --> 00:51:08.959
How long is that gonna be?
00:51:08.960 --> 00:51:10.958
- I don\'t have any official word
on that yet.
00:51:10.959 --> 00:51:12.958
- This car was built
down the street
00:51:12.959 --> 00:51:13.999
from my business,
the Raven Lounge.
00:51:14.000 --> 00:51:15.958
- In Hamtramck.
- Hamtramck.
00:51:15.959 --> 00:51:18.958
I own a blues bar
on Shane down there.
00:51:18.959 --> 00:51:21.958
[male announcer
speaking indistinctly]
00:51:21.959 --> 00:51:22.959
That\'s interesting.
00:51:30.292 --> 00:51:33.416
\"Solar power energy storage\"?
00:51:33.417 --> 00:51:34.959
Holy cow!
00:51:36.417 --> 00:51:38.125
They gonna drive it
from the sun?
00:51:39.959 --> 00:51:42.416
Male announcer:
Offering 41 miles to the gallon
00:51:42.417 --> 00:51:44.958
on a single tank.
00:51:44.959 --> 00:51:45.959
Male announcer:
Just in one night,
00:51:45.960 --> 00:51:48.958
steamers spread over the world.
00:51:48.959 --> 00:51:53.958
During the 250 years
after the Industrial Revolution,
00:51:53.959 --> 00:51:55.958
mankind created a wealth
more than that
00:51:55.959 --> 00:51:59.958
of the past
2.5 million years.
00:51:59.959 --> 00:52:00.959
[dramatic music playing]
00:52:00.960 --> 00:52:03.708
Crazy enjoyment at one side,
00:52:03.709 --> 00:52:06.958
while slow suicide at the other.
00:52:06.959 --> 00:52:08.958
[ominous music playing]
00:52:08.959 --> 00:52:12.958
Could the bloody black gold
really dominate the world?
00:52:12.959 --> 00:52:15.958
Mankind has to swallow
his fruit of evil
00:52:15.959 --> 00:52:17.959
from crazy conquest.
00:52:19.959 --> 00:52:23.958
Where is Noah\'s Ark
to save human beings?
00:52:23.959 --> 00:52:27.541
An enterprise that can make cars
as well as batteries
00:52:27.542 --> 00:52:29.958
is storing its power
to change the world.
00:52:29.959 --> 00:52:35.959
[ethereal singing]
00:52:40.959 --> 00:52:41.999
- Hi, how you doin\'?
00:52:42.000 --> 00:52:43.541
- Yeah.
May I help you?
00:52:43.542 --> 00:52:44.958
- This BYD?
- BYD.
00:52:44.959 --> 00:52:46.958
\"Build your dreams.\"
It\'s a...
00:52:46.959 --> 00:52:48.291
- Is that the name
of the company?
00:52:48.292 --> 00:52:49.958
- Yes.
00:52:49.959 --> 00:52:50.959
BYD is the name of the company,
00:52:50.960 --> 00:52:53.958
and \"Build Your Dreams\"
is our slogan.
00:52:53.959 --> 00:52:55.291
- Where is the company based?
00:52:55.292 --> 00:52:56.958
Is it in Japan, China?
Where?
00:52:56.959 --> 00:52:58.958
- Uh, China.
It\'s in China near Hong Kong.
00:52:58.959 --> 00:52:59.959
- Okay.
00:52:59.960 --> 00:53:01.416
Hmm.
00:53:01.417 --> 00:53:04.958
So this is the Chinese version
00:53:04.959 --> 00:53:06.958
of competing
with the American Volt.
00:53:06.959 --> 00:53:08.958
- Yeah, yes.
00:53:08.959 --> 00:53:10.959
Yes, and our price is
very competitive.
00:53:11.959 --> 00:53:13.958
- Hmm.
00:53:13.959 --> 00:53:14.959
That\'s interesting.
00:53:14.959 --> 00:53:15.959
- Yeah.
[laughs]
00:53:15.960 --> 00:53:17.958
- So this is comparable?
00:53:17.959 --> 00:53:19.958
- Yeah, actually...
- Hey, it\'s a better deal!
00:53:19.959 --> 00:53:20.959
I\'m saying, my God.
- Right, right.
00:53:20.960 --> 00:53:26.124
- I mean, the Volt, even though
I want it to succeed,
00:53:26.125 --> 00:53:29.958
has some genuine problems
at $40-some thousand.
00:53:29.959 --> 00:53:31.958
And you are talking
about $20,000?
00:53:31.959 --> 00:53:32.959
- Yes, $28,000.
00:53:32.960 --> 00:53:34.291
- Then you would have to...
00:53:34.292 --> 00:53:35.958
- How can the Chinese do that?
00:53:35.959 --> 00:53:37.833
- Chinese...
[laughing]
00:53:37.834 --> 00:53:39.958
Chinese can do.
Yeah, Chinese can do.
00:53:39.959 --> 00:53:40.959
- Well, I know you can do.
00:53:40.960 --> 00:53:42.958
I believe you can do.
00:53:42.959 --> 00:53:44.958
Man.
00:53:44.959 --> 00:53:46.124
Hey, you know what?
00:53:46.125 --> 00:53:48.958
The Volt got problems.
00:53:48.959 --> 00:53:51.958
- He said Warren Buffet is
a major investor.
00:53:51.959 --> 00:53:53.958
- Ah, so they gonna be around.
00:53:53.959 --> 00:53:55.959
But I\'m saying,
what does that do to the Volt?
00:53:58.959 --> 00:54:00.958
Excuse me.
Can I just ask a question?
00:54:00.959 --> 00:54:01.959
Do you have any literature
on this?
00:54:01.960 --> 00:54:03.958
- I do not have any here
at the show,
00:54:03.959 --> 00:54:05.958
but at GM.com...
If you go to Chevy.com...
00:54:05.959 --> 00:54:08.124
- What are we gonna do
about that BYD over there
00:54:08.125 --> 00:54:10.958
that I just saw?
00:54:10.959 --> 00:54:12.958
The Chinese car,
the electric car.
00:54:12.959 --> 00:54:14.124
Have you all seen this?
- No, no.
00:54:14.125 --> 00:54:15.958
- Sir...
- You gonna do about it?
00:54:15.959 --> 00:54:16.999
- Go over there.
See BYD?
00:54:17.000 --> 00:54:19.958
- Yeah.
- Go over there and take a look.
00:54:19.959 --> 00:54:23.541
Chinese electric car gonna run
more than this,
00:54:23.542 --> 00:54:24.958
and it cost 20 grand!
00:54:24.959 --> 00:54:25.999
- Yeah.
00:54:26.000 --> 00:54:28.958
- I\'m going like,
\"How can China do this?\"
00:54:28.959 --> 00:54:30.958
This is $41,000!
- Yeah.
00:54:30.959 --> 00:54:33.541
- It\'s amazing!
You know, I\'m gonna be cocky.
00:54:33.542 --> 00:54:34.958
This global economy stinks!
00:54:34.959 --> 00:54:36.958
- This is probably...
It\'s probably got
00:54:36.959 --> 00:54:37.959
$20,000 worth of options
00:54:37.960 --> 00:54:39.958
compared to that
over there, though.
00:54:39.959 --> 00:54:41.958
- Yeah, I\'d say you\'re a little
apples-to-oranges
00:54:41.959 --> 00:54:42.959
on your car, though.
00:54:42.960 --> 00:54:44.958
- Okay, why am I apples
to oranges?
00:54:44.959 --> 00:54:46.958
- It\'s like saying, \"Well, I
mean, the Cruze is $20,000,
00:54:46.959 --> 00:54:48.958
and the Corvette\'s $80,000.\"
00:54:48.959 --> 00:54:50.958
You\'re not driving a \'Vette
if you\'re driving the Cruze.
00:54:50.959 --> 00:54:52.541
I mean, it\'s a nicer car.
00:54:52.542 --> 00:54:54.958
- I know, but...
And I agree with you.
00:54:54.959 --> 00:54:56.958
I agree with you totally.
00:54:56.959 --> 00:54:58.124
Can I take you back in the \'60s
00:54:58.125 --> 00:54:59.958
and talk about Honda
for a moment?
00:54:59.959 --> 00:55:01.291
- Sure.
00:55:01.292 --> 00:55:03.291
- Don\'t you remember when nobody
would buy a Honda?
00:55:03.292 --> 00:55:04.958
- Uh-huh.
00:55:04.959 --> 00:55:07.416
- And they said identical things
that you just told us here,
00:55:07.417 --> 00:55:10.416
that, \"you talkin\'
about apples and oranges.\"
00:55:10.417 --> 00:55:13.833
\"Honda is a piece of junk,\"
they said.
00:55:13.834 --> 00:55:15.958
And finally, Honda took us over.
00:55:15.959 --> 00:55:16.959
My question is...
- Honda did?
00:55:16.959 --> 00:55:17.959
- Yes, Honda did.
00:55:17.960 --> 00:55:20.958
- They stole our technology.
00:55:20.959 --> 00:55:22.708
- I want this car to succeed.
00:55:22.709 --> 00:55:24.959
It\'s built down the street
from my business.
00:55:29.959 --> 00:55:31.958
- Thank you, sir.
Enjoy... good luck with your club.
00:55:31.959 --> 00:55:33.958
That\'s awesome.
00:55:33.959 --> 00:55:37.958
- You see, that guy don\'t want
to talk about reality.
00:55:37.959 --> 00:55:38.959
He doesn\'t want to talk about...
00:55:38.960 --> 00:55:41.958
We got our heads
in the sand again.
00:55:41.959 --> 00:55:42.959
- Leave it alone.
00:55:42.960 --> 00:55:44.958
- No, I\'ma leave it alone.
00:55:44.959 --> 00:55:47.958
But he\'s not... we\'re not dealing
with reality.
00:55:47.959 --> 00:55:50.958
- Right.
00:55:50.959 --> 00:55:52.958
- He\'s... we\'re not... ugh.
00:55:52.959 --> 00:55:55.958
This is heartbreaking for me,
00:55:55.959 --> 00:55:56.959
\'cause I know
the average American.
00:55:56.960 --> 00:55:58.958
Now, I would probably wouldn\'t,
00:55:58.959 --> 00:56:00.958
because I probably
would buy this.
00:56:00.959 --> 00:56:02.958
But the average American
is gonna go buy
00:56:02.959 --> 00:56:04.958
that junk over there,
if you call it junk...
00:56:04.959 --> 00:56:06.958
Whatever you call it.
00:56:06.959 --> 00:56:08.959
Or the apples, as he called it.
00:56:12.959 --> 00:56:18.959
[lively orchestral music]
00:56:30.959 --> 00:56:36.834
[operatic singing]
00:56:46.959 --> 00:56:52.959
[music continues]
00:56:56.959 --> 00:56:59.958
- If I should ever be called
upon to act...
00:56:59.959 --> 00:57:00.959
[quacks]
00:57:00.960 --> 00:57:02.958
Professionally,
00:57:02.959 --> 00:57:05.958
I am happy to think
there will be no difficulty
00:57:05.959 --> 00:57:09.958
in finding plenty of people
whose loss will be
00:57:09.959 --> 00:57:14.958
a distinct gain
to society at large.
00:57:14.959 --> 00:57:20.959
[bright orchestral music]
00:57:22.959 --> 00:57:24.958
[singing]
As someday it may happen
00:57:24.959 --> 00:57:27.958
That a victim must be found
00:57:27.959 --> 00:57:29.124
I\'ve got a little list
00:57:29.125 --> 00:57:31.291
I\'ve got a little list
00:57:31.292 --> 00:57:33.291
Of society offenders
00:57:33.292 --> 00:57:35.291
Whom might well be underground
00:57:35.292 --> 00:57:37.958
And never would be missed
00:57:37.959 --> 00:57:39.958
Who never would be missed
00:57:39.959 --> 00:57:44.958
Here\'s Hyundai, BMW,
and Honda too
00:57:44.959 --> 00:57:46.958
I\'ve got them on the list
00:57:46.959 --> 00:57:49.708
They never would be missed
00:57:49.709 --> 00:57:53.291
Civil servants you might guess
is for eternal revenue
00:57:53.292 --> 00:57:55.958
Just to tell you
what you\'ve missed
00:57:55.959 --> 00:57:57.958
I\'ve got them on the list
00:57:57.959 --> 00:57:59.541
[laughter and applause]
00:57:59.542 --> 00:58:01.958
And government officials
00:58:01.959 --> 00:58:03.958
Who shaft the middle class
00:58:03.959 --> 00:58:06.958
They don\'t care
about what\'s happening
00:58:06.959 --> 00:58:08.958
And all can kiss my...
00:58:08.959 --> 00:58:10.541
[laughter and applause]
00:58:10.542 --> 00:58:11.958
Axe
00:58:11.959 --> 00:58:13.958
[laughter]
00:58:13.959 --> 00:58:15.958
But it really doesn\'t matter
00:58:15.959 --> 00:58:17.958
Whom you put upon the list
00:58:17.959 --> 00:58:19.958
They none of them be missed
00:58:19.959 --> 00:58:21.958
They none of them be missed
00:58:21.959 --> 00:58:23.958
[all singing]
You may put them on the list
00:58:23.959 --> 00:58:25.958
You may put them on the list
00:58:25.959 --> 00:58:27.958
And they none of them be missed
00:58:27.959 --> 00:58:31.958
They none of them be missed
00:58:31.959 --> 00:58:34.959
[music continues]
00:58:48.125 --> 00:58:51.958
[blender whirring]
00:58:51.959 --> 00:58:53.291
- 40% this year.
00:58:53.292 --> 00:58:55.958
At a time when America really
needs jobs and innovation,
00:58:55.959 --> 00:58:58.958
General Motors... which got bailed
out by taxpayers, don\'t forget...
00:58:58.959 --> 00:59:02.958
Says it\'s moving its electric
car business to China.
00:59:02.959 --> 00:59:04.958
- In the future,
its global platforms
00:59:04.959 --> 00:59:06.958
for electric vehicles...
00:59:06.959 --> 00:59:07.959
Most of that research
and development
00:59:07.960 --> 00:59:10.958
is gonna be taking place
in Shanghai.
00:59:10.959 --> 00:59:13.958
- The Shanghai Automotive
and the government of China
00:59:13.959 --> 00:59:16.958
is requesting and pressuring
General Motors,
00:59:16.959 --> 00:59:18.958
in order for them to sell
in their markets,
00:59:18.959 --> 00:59:20.958
to share
their intellectual property.
00:59:20.959 --> 00:59:22.958
And that means
the unique technology
00:59:22.959 --> 00:59:24.708
that\'s assigned to the Volt
00:59:24.709 --> 00:59:27.958
is gonna potentially be made
in China.
00:59:27.959 --> 00:59:30.958
- You seem afraid about the idea
that we would share
00:59:30.959 --> 00:59:32.958
our intellectual property
with the Chinese.
00:59:32.959 --> 00:59:34.958
Do you trust them?
00:59:34.959 --> 00:59:38.958
- The Chinese government and
the Premier of China has said
00:59:38.959 --> 00:59:42.416
that he wakes up every morning
wondering how he can create
00:59:42.417 --> 00:59:44.958
25 million jobs a year
for his people.
00:59:44.959 --> 00:59:48.708
Unless we, as a nation,
wake up every morning and say,
00:59:48.709 --> 00:59:50.958
\"How are we gonna create
millions of jobs
00:59:50.959 --> 00:59:52.708
for our citizens
and take action?\"
00:59:52.709 --> 00:59:55.958
We\'re gonna continue
to lose jobs.
00:59:55.959 --> 00:59:58.958
- I\'m getting a little nervous.
00:59:58.959 --> 01:00:00.958
What are we doing?
01:00:00.959 --> 01:00:02.959
We\'re selling our souls.
01:00:04.709 --> 01:00:05.958
- It\'s not good at all.
01:00:05.959 --> 01:00:08.124
We don\'t value our jobs here.
01:00:08.125 --> 01:00:11.958
- I think they\'re playing us.
01:00:11.959 --> 01:00:14.958
They\'re playing us
like a $2 pimp.
01:00:14.959 --> 01:00:19.958
And eventually, they are having
us selling our souls
01:00:19.959 --> 01:00:21.958
for little or nothing.
01:00:21.959 --> 01:00:23.958
I tell you, it\'s...
01:00:23.959 --> 01:00:26.958
China is rockin\' the world.
01:00:26.959 --> 01:00:30.958
- They\'re more advanced
than we are.
01:00:30.959 --> 01:00:33.959
And they\'re more economical
than we are.
01:00:35.959 --> 01:00:37.958
- And their standard of living
is lower than ours.
01:00:37.959 --> 01:00:38.959
- Yes, they are.
01:00:38.960 --> 01:00:41.958
- So should we lower
our standard of living?
01:00:41.959 --> 01:00:45.958
- We\'re gonna have to
in order to compete.
01:00:45.959 --> 01:00:48.959
- I don\'t think the American
people are gonna like that.
01:00:50.959 --> 01:00:53.959
[TV playing indistinctly]
01:00:59.834 --> 01:01:05.834
[fractured instrumental music]
01:01:12.959 --> 01:01:14.124
- Calling me nice things...
01:01:14.125 --> 01:01:18.708
And there\'s a chance...
01:01:18.709 --> 01:01:19.958
I don\'t have any money.
01:01:19.959 --> 01:01:22.958
I\'m pulling from my estate.
01:01:22.959 --> 01:01:24.291
[man speaks indistinctly]
01:01:24.292 --> 01:01:30.000
[music continues]
01:01:34.959 --> 01:01:35.959
[static crackles]
01:01:35.960 --> 01:01:37.291
[man speaks indistinctly]
01:01:37.292 --> 01:01:39.708
- Please hang up and dial again.
01:01:39.709 --> 01:01:41.958
If you need assistance,
call your operator.
01:01:41.959 --> 01:01:43.958
Please hang up now.
01:01:43.959 --> 01:01:45.958
[woman speaks indistinctly]
01:01:45.959 --> 01:01:51.959
[visceral violin music]
01:02:00.959 --> 01:02:02.541
- What\'s up, Detroit?
01:02:02.542 --> 01:02:03.959
It\'s your girl Crystal Starr.
01:02:07.959 --> 01:02:09.708
Listen, like, I don\'t know
if y\'all understand,
01:02:09.709 --> 01:02:11.958
but they shutting down schools.
01:02:11.959 --> 01:02:15.958
They shutting down...
01:02:15.959 --> 01:02:17.959
futures, basically.
01:02:19.959 --> 01:02:20.959
And that\'s not cool.
01:02:20.960 --> 01:02:23.958
Like, it\'s just not cool.
01:02:23.959 --> 01:02:25.958
You know, it almost makes me
feel like
01:02:25.959 --> 01:02:28.125
we might be regressing.
01:02:32.417 --> 01:02:34.958
And I feel like...
01:02:34.959 --> 01:02:38.416
If you\'re concerned about
01:02:38.417 --> 01:02:40.958
the six abandoned houses
on your block,
01:02:40.959 --> 01:02:43.958
if you\'re concerned about
01:02:43.959 --> 01:02:46.958
the people next door to you
not eating dinner,
01:02:46.959 --> 01:02:48.958
if you\'re concerned about
01:02:48.959 --> 01:02:50.708
the laws that don\'t exist,
01:02:50.709 --> 01:02:52.958
if you\'re concerned
about these things,
01:02:52.959 --> 01:02:53.959
I\'m urging you...
01:02:53.960 --> 01:02:55.958
I\'m not even urging you.
01:02:55.959 --> 01:02:58.959
I\'m daring you to come out.
01:03:01.292 --> 01:03:02.958
We got enough problems, y\'all.
01:03:02.959 --> 01:03:03.959
Now let\'s just come up
with some way
01:03:03.960 --> 01:03:05.958
to solve these problems,
01:03:05.959 --> 01:03:08.417
\'cause I think we done sent
for the heavens, Detroit.
01:03:09.834 --> 01:03:15.542
[somber instrumental music]
01:03:35.959 --> 01:03:38.958
- Okay, can we have quiet,
please?
01:03:38.959 --> 01:03:40.958
My name is Stephanie Wayer.
01:03:40.959 --> 01:03:42.291
I work.
01:03:42.292 --> 01:03:44.958
I make minimum wage.
01:03:44.959 --> 01:03:48.958
I keep pushing and pushing
to improve myself.
01:03:48.959 --> 01:03:51.958
I have a new job
I start this Monday.
01:03:51.959 --> 01:03:55.291
I get up early
in the morning faithfully.
01:03:55.292 --> 01:03:57.958
I may not have to be to work
until 10:00,
01:03:57.959 --> 01:04:00.958
but I am out there at 8:00
and 7:30
01:04:00.959 --> 01:04:02.958
waitin\' to catch my bus,
01:04:02.959 --> 01:04:05.124
\'cause I don\'t be late
for anyone.
01:04:05.125 --> 01:04:08.958
What am I to do
when all I have is the bus?
01:04:08.959 --> 01:04:13.958
Please, please, don\'t take
our transportation away.
01:04:13.959 --> 01:04:16.124
That\'s all we have.
01:04:16.125 --> 01:04:18.416
Thank you.
01:04:18.417 --> 01:04:22.958
- We cannot take
any more cutbacks.
01:04:22.959 --> 01:04:23.959
Period.
01:04:23.960 --> 01:04:26.958
Not only in relation
to the busses,
01:04:26.959 --> 01:04:28.958
but services, period.
01:04:28.959 --> 01:04:32.958
We\'re not going to accept
any more downsizing.
01:04:32.959 --> 01:04:37.958
We want to hear about upsizing,
bigsizing, supersizing Detroit.
01:04:37.959 --> 01:04:40.958
- And I\'m gonna
tell you something.
01:04:40.959 --> 01:04:42.958
God gonna judge
each and every one of us
01:04:42.959 --> 01:04:46.124
about to things that we do
to one another.
01:04:46.125 --> 01:04:48.958
And I\'m gonna say
He\'s gonna hold you accountable,
01:04:48.959 --> 01:04:51.958
and believe me, He\'s not gonna
have as much mercy
01:04:51.959 --> 01:04:54.709
as the citizens of Detroit
have had on you.
01:04:55.959 --> 01:05:01.959
[ambient instrumental music]
01:05:05.125 --> 01:05:11.958
[ominous music]
01:05:11.959 --> 01:05:14.959
[muffled yelling]
01:05:20.959 --> 01:05:23.834
[fire crackling]
01:05:26.959 --> 01:05:29.958
- We said it couldn\'t happen,
but it did.
01:05:29.959 --> 01:05:32.958
On July 23, 1967,
01:05:32.959 --> 01:05:34.958
Detroit was hit by a riot
01:05:34.959 --> 01:05:38.124
which left 43 dead,
thousands injured,
01:05:38.125 --> 01:05:40.292
and a city in flames.
01:05:42.000 --> 01:05:43.958
- As Governor of the state
of Michigan,
01:05:43.959 --> 01:05:46.958
I do hereby officially request
the immediate deployment
01:05:46.959 --> 01:05:48.958
of federal troops into Michigan
01:05:48.959 --> 01:05:50.958
to assist state
and local authorities
01:05:50.959 --> 01:05:53.708
in re-establishing law and order
in the city of Detroit.
01:05:53.709 --> 01:05:54.959
[gunshots]
01:05:55.959 --> 01:06:01.959
[somber instrumental music]
01:06:10.959 --> 01:06:13.834
[train chugging]
01:06:17.959 --> 01:06:18.959
[bell dings]
01:06:18.960 --> 01:06:22.959
male announcer:
The next station is COBO Center.
01:06:27.959 --> 01:06:33.959
- [singing operatically]
01:06:43.959 --> 01:06:49.834
[singing continues]
01:06:52.959 --> 01:06:58.959
[singing continues]
01:07:03.959 --> 01:07:06.959
[indistinct chatter]
01:07:08.542 --> 01:07:10.958
[machine hisses]
01:07:10.959 --> 01:07:13.959
[steamer whirring]
01:07:15.959 --> 01:07:16.959
- Are you guys
gonna have it here,
01:07:16.960 --> 01:07:18.958
or do you want me
to bag this up?
01:07:18.959 --> 01:07:19.959
Do you want me to put this
in a bag?
01:07:19.959 --> 01:07:20.959
- Uh, yeah.
- Take it to go?
01:07:20.960 --> 01:07:22.125
Okay, sure.
01:07:23.959 --> 01:07:25.958
- I\'d like a coffee.
01:07:25.959 --> 01:07:27.958
- Uh-huh.
- Do you have ceramic cups?
01:07:27.959 --> 01:07:29.958
- Yeah, like dine-in cups?
01:07:29.959 --> 01:07:31.958
- Yeah, not cardboard.
01:07:31.959 --> 01:07:33.416
- [chuckles]
01:07:33.417 --> 01:07:34.958
Got the Coney Island style,
baby.
01:07:34.959 --> 01:07:36.958
What you know about it, huh?
All righty.
01:07:36.959 --> 01:07:40.958
- So I\'d like, you know, like,
just black coffee with milk.
01:07:40.959 --> 01:07:43.708
- Well, then, it\'s not black
anymore if there\'s milk.
01:07:43.709 --> 01:07:45.416
- Well...
- You\'re integrating.
01:07:45.417 --> 01:07:47.958
I\'m digging
the \"Harry Potter\" glasses.
01:07:47.959 --> 01:07:49.958
- Hey, hey, hey.
- Kind of fancy.
01:07:49.959 --> 01:07:51.958
- You know, that could
potentially be offensive.
01:07:51.959 --> 01:07:53.541
- How could it be offensive?
01:07:53.542 --> 01:07:54.958
Everybody loves \"Harry Potter,\"
don\'t they?
01:07:54.959 --> 01:07:56.958
- I don\'t know.
I don\'t like \"Harry Potter.\"
01:07:56.959 --> 01:07:57.959
I don\'t.
01:07:57.960 --> 01:07:59.958
- Oh, you don\'t like
\"Harry Potter\"?
01:07:59.959 --> 01:08:00.959
- No.
- Okay, I won\'t say it again.
01:08:00.960 --> 01:08:02.958
I\'m sorry.
01:08:02.959 --> 01:08:05.958
- It\'s modeled after 1950s
Italian architects.
01:08:05.959 --> 01:08:07.958
That\'s what these glasses
should represent.
01:08:07.959 --> 01:08:10.958
- Oh, okay.
Well, I learned something new.
01:08:10.959 --> 01:08:11.999
That\'s neat.
Where are you guys from?
01:08:12.000 --> 01:08:13.958
Where are you from?
- Switzerland.
01:08:13.959 --> 01:08:15.958
- Switzerland.
That\'s kind of fancy.
01:08:15.959 --> 01:08:17.958
What are you doing here?
- Sightseeing.
01:08:17.959 --> 01:08:19.958
- Sightseeing.
- Just checking everything out?
01:08:19.959 --> 01:08:21.958
- Yeah.
- Yeah?
01:08:21.959 --> 01:08:23.958
What\'s your... what\'s the object
of your affection?
01:08:23.959 --> 01:08:25.958
- Well, we kind of...
In Switzerland,
01:08:25.959 --> 01:08:28.958
everything is always neat
and proper and new.
01:08:28.959 --> 01:08:33.541
And we kind of feel like Detroit
seems somewhat interesting
01:08:33.542 --> 01:08:35.958
with all of its,
you know, decay.
01:08:35.959 --> 01:08:37.708
- Decay?
01:08:37.709 --> 01:08:38.958
That could be
slightly offensive.
01:08:38.959 --> 01:08:41.959
- Yeah.
- [laughs]
01:08:45.959 --> 01:08:48.958
Café got busy today.
Thank God for the opera.
01:08:48.959 --> 01:08:49.959
The Opera House.
01:09:03.959 --> 01:09:06.959
[cheers and applause]
01:09:24.959 --> 01:09:30.959
[quirky marching band music]
01:09:51.959 --> 01:09:54.959
[paraders cheer]
01:09:56.542 --> 01:10:02.292
[music continues]
01:10:07.959 --> 01:10:13.959
[music continues]
01:10:16.959 --> 01:10:19.959
[paraders cheer]
01:10:29.292 --> 01:10:32.000
[both breathing heavily]
01:10:41.959 --> 01:10:44.958
[power drill whirring]
01:10:44.959 --> 01:10:46.292
[drill sputters]
01:10:47.959 --> 01:10:50.958
[drill sputtering]
01:10:50.959 --> 01:10:51.959
- [sighs]
01:10:53.959 --> 01:10:56.958
Dorota and I met in Hawaii.
01:10:56.959 --> 01:10:57.959
We knew we weren\'t gonna stay
in Hawaii,
01:10:57.960 --> 01:10:59.958
so we were just tossing
around places.
01:10:59.959 --> 01:11:02.958
We wanted to be somewhere urban,
of course.
01:11:02.959 --> 01:11:05.541
We had a project we wanted
to do like street art,
01:11:05.542 --> 01:11:07.833
public installation,
01:11:07.834 --> 01:11:08.958
and so we just
started evaluating.
01:11:08.959 --> 01:11:10.958
You know,
we looked at Baltimore.
01:11:10.959 --> 01:11:12.958
We were looking
into New York City.
01:11:12.959 --> 01:11:13.959
And Detroit came up.
01:11:15.959 --> 01:11:18.541
And that... and I knew that
that\'s one thing Detroit had
01:11:18.542 --> 01:11:22.542
an abundance of, was space
and old warehouses.
01:11:30.125 --> 01:11:33.958
I feel like we\'ve assimilated
into that community of artists
01:11:33.959 --> 01:11:35.959
that are moving here
and coming here.
01:11:36.959 --> 01:11:37.959
[camera shutter whirs]
01:11:41.959 --> 01:11:42.959
[camera shutter whirs]
01:11:42.960 --> 01:11:44.959
It\'s pretty sweet.
01:11:51.709 --> 01:11:53.958
[water running]
01:11:53.959 --> 01:11:56.958
[whistling]
01:11:56.959 --> 01:11:59.541
Never had appliances this nice,
so I feel like
01:11:59.542 --> 01:12:00.958
I should be taking care of them.
01:12:00.959 --> 01:12:01.959
[laughs]
01:12:05.959 --> 01:12:08.958
Yeah, we bought it
just a couple weeks ago.
01:12:08.959 --> 01:12:11.958
And we\'re able to keep
our studio,
01:12:11.959 --> 01:12:13.959
because everything\'s
so affordable.
01:12:16.959 --> 01:12:19.999
See, I just... it\'s...
Detroit is always...
01:12:20.000 --> 01:12:21.959
Constantly amazing me.
01:12:23.417 --> 01:12:25.958
I feel like this is...
Like, it\'s redefining
01:12:25.959 --> 01:12:27.958
what the value of things are.
01:12:27.959 --> 01:12:28.999
You know, $20,000...
01:12:29.000 --> 01:12:32.416
You know, $25,000
for an amazing loft.
01:12:32.417 --> 01:12:34.958
I don\'t know; that just makes
it accessible to people like me.
01:12:34.959 --> 01:12:38.833
I would never able to afford
to own a home as an artist,
01:12:38.834 --> 01:12:42.958
and here I am with a studio
and an apartment
01:12:42.959 --> 01:12:45.708
in a major city,
01:12:45.709 --> 01:12:48.417
you know, functioning for, like,
$700 or less a month.
01:12:52.959 --> 01:12:55.124
We can experiment here,
01:12:55.125 --> 01:12:56.958
because if we fail,
01:12:56.959 --> 01:12:59.958
we haven\'t
really fallen anywhere.
01:12:59.959 --> 01:13:00.959
[chuckles]
01:13:17.959 --> 01:13:19.958
- It\'s about time we got
some good news for a change.
01:13:19.959 --> 01:13:22.291
- Yes.
You can\'t beat that.
01:13:22.292 --> 01:13:25.958
2,500 people coming back.
That\'s... that\'s beautiful, man.
01:13:25.959 --> 01:13:26.959
- Yeah.
- That\'s awesome.
01:13:26.959 --> 01:13:27.959
- This is where it started.
01:13:27.959 --> 01:13:28.959
This is where
it should always be.
01:13:28.960 --> 01:13:30.291
- I agree.
01:13:30.292 --> 01:13:31.958
- See, Eminem said...
- Yeah?
01:13:31.959 --> 01:13:33.958
- \"Imported from Detroit.\"
[laughs]
01:13:33.959 --> 01:13:34.959
- Imported from the D.
01:13:34.959 --> 01:13:35.959
- Yup.
01:13:35.959 --> 01:13:36.959
[laughter]
01:13:40.709 --> 01:13:41.958
- You want to see
the fish I caught?
01:13:41.959 --> 01:13:42.959
[laughs]
01:13:42.960 --> 01:13:44.541
Huh?
01:13:44.542 --> 01:13:45.958
You want to see my fish
I caught?
01:13:45.959 --> 01:13:47.541
[laughs]
01:13:47.542 --> 01:13:48.958
Huh?
01:13:48.959 --> 01:13:50.239
You want to see my fish
I caught?
01:13:57.959 --> 01:13:59.959
Get your head down in there.
01:14:01.959 --> 01:14:03.542
I just had to go and relax.
01:14:07.292 --> 01:14:09.959
It\'s all about celebrating
and relaxation.
01:14:15.959 --> 01:14:17.958
Hey.
- You all right?
01:14:17.959 --> 01:14:18.959
- Wow.
01:14:20.292 --> 01:14:21.958
- No [...].
I\'m celebrating.
01:14:21.959 --> 01:14:23.958
[laughs]
[...].
01:14:23.959 --> 01:14:25.958
I think my hand got real high
when they said the third shift.
01:14:25.959 --> 01:14:27.958
That\'s what really excited me.
01:14:27.959 --> 01:14:29.958
I was giving thanks.
01:14:29.959 --> 01:14:30.959
That\'s what I was doing.
01:14:30.960 --> 01:14:32.959
I was giving thanks to the Lord.
01:14:35.000 --> 01:14:36.959
That\'s good news for us.
01:14:37.959 --> 01:14:43.959
[ethereal music]
01:14:45.959 --> 01:14:47.958
I just like this place.
01:14:47.959 --> 01:14:48.959
I just love it.
01:14:51.834 --> 01:14:52.959
I just love it.
01:14:53.959 --> 01:14:55.417
I love it.
01:14:56.959 --> 01:15:01.959
[music continues]
01:15:03.959 --> 01:15:07.833
- The auto industry is
experiencing a resurgence,
01:15:07.834 --> 01:15:08.958
and that\'s good.
01:15:08.959 --> 01:15:12.958
The bailout has saved
a million jobs.
01:15:12.959 --> 01:15:15.958
But that doesn\'t mean
that manufacturing is back
01:15:15.959 --> 01:15:19.000
to what it was
20, 30, 40 years ago.
01:15:21.959 --> 01:15:24.958
- Change is difficult.
Change is hard work.
01:15:24.959 --> 01:15:26.958
You have to keep up.
01:15:26.959 --> 01:15:27.959
You have to innovate,
01:15:27.960 --> 01:15:30.834
otherwise you\'re gonna be
out of a job.
01:15:32.959 --> 01:15:34.958
- There\'s much more competition,
01:15:34.959 --> 01:15:38.958
and the burden ultimately rests
on our education system.
01:15:38.959 --> 01:15:42.958
We need more education,
and we need better education
01:15:42.959 --> 01:15:46.291
if we want to prepare people
for the 21st century.
01:15:46.292 --> 01:15:50.958
[metal wobbling]
01:15:50.959 --> 01:15:51.959
- Yeehaw!
01:15:52.959 --> 01:15:55.000
[squeaking]
01:15:56.292 --> 01:16:02.292
[wistful instrumental music]
01:16:11.959 --> 01:16:13.958
- Can Americans
work collectively?
01:16:13.959 --> 01:16:14.959
Yes.
01:16:14.960 --> 01:16:16.958
I mean, we have in the past.
01:16:16.959 --> 01:16:19.958
I\'m an infinite believer
in American pluck.
01:16:19.959 --> 01:16:22.958
[melancholy instrumental music]
01:16:22.959 --> 01:16:26.958
[canisters hissing]
01:16:26.959 --> 01:16:32.416
- Where there is crisis,
there is opportunity.
01:16:32.417 --> 01:16:35.958
So we don\'t want people to say,
\"This is the end of Detroit.\"
01:16:35.959 --> 01:16:37.958
It certainly is not.
01:16:37.959 --> 01:16:41.958
But we do want people to learn
from our experience,
01:16:41.959 --> 01:16:44.708
which has not been pretty.
01:16:44.709 --> 01:16:48.833
We also want it to serve as
a wake-up call to the country.
01:16:48.834 --> 01:16:54.542
[music continues]
01:17:05.959 --> 01:17:06.959
- Thing is [...] massive.
01:17:06.960 --> 01:17:08.958
[train horn blowing]
01:17:08.959 --> 01:17:10.958
- This was one of, like,
the most elite train stations
01:17:10.959 --> 01:17:11.959
in the country.
01:17:11.960 --> 01:17:14.124
[train whistle blowing]
01:17:14.125 --> 01:17:15.958
- I just love how this glass
hangs on.
01:17:15.959 --> 01:17:17.833
It\'s like, \"I\'m not falling.
01:17:17.834 --> 01:17:21.959
I will not... I refuse to fall
off this [...] frame ever.\"
01:17:43.959 --> 01:17:47.958
- Sometimes I sit down here,
01:17:47.959 --> 01:17:51.958
meditate, pray...
01:17:51.959 --> 01:17:54.958
strategize...
01:17:54.959 --> 01:17:57.958
about the business...
01:17:57.959 --> 01:18:00.959
and just kind of rest
for a while.
01:18:04.542 --> 01:18:05.958
Let me see.
01:18:05.959 --> 01:18:07.959
What are they doing with...
01:18:09.959 --> 01:18:10.959
With the budget today?
01:18:15.959 --> 01:18:18.125
Detroit was
the highest foreclosure rate.
01:18:19.542 --> 01:18:22.958
My brother called from Florida.
01:18:22.959 --> 01:18:25.958
And he said, \"Man!
01:18:25.959 --> 01:18:27.958
\"You guys gonna be
out of the world in a minute!
01:18:27.959 --> 01:18:29.958
\"Everybody\'s gonna lose
their homes.
01:18:29.959 --> 01:18:31.708
\"What the hell are you all
doing up there?
01:18:31.709 --> 01:18:33.958
You can\'t pay your mortgage
notes or something?\"
01:18:33.959 --> 01:18:37.958
And I said to him, \"Look,
this is the tip of the iceberg.\"
01:18:37.959 --> 01:18:39.958
I called my brother last month.
01:18:39.959 --> 01:18:43.416
I said, \"I just read that
Florida now is number one!
01:18:43.417 --> 01:18:44.958
That Florida\"...
01:18:44.959 --> 01:18:47.958
He goes, \"Yeah, man, everybody
here is losing their jobs.
01:18:47.959 --> 01:18:49.958
\"We thought Disney World
was gonna hire everybody.
01:18:49.959 --> 01:18:52.958
Disney World ain\'t what
it used to be.\"
01:18:52.959 --> 01:18:53.959
See what I\'m saying?
01:18:57.959 --> 01:19:00.958
You know, capitalism is
a great system.
01:19:00.959 --> 01:19:02.958
I love it.
01:19:02.959 --> 01:19:05.958
But it exploits the weak.
01:19:05.959 --> 01:19:07.958
It always does.
01:19:07.959 --> 01:19:10.541
It always does, unfortunately.
01:19:10.542 --> 01:19:13.958
You know, Kagan,
one of the sociologists
01:19:13.959 --> 01:19:18.541
that I used to read
back in the \'60s,
01:19:18.542 --> 01:19:22.958
said that...
01:19:22.959 --> 01:19:26.124
the upper class needed
the middle class
01:19:26.125 --> 01:19:29.958
to buffer the poor;
01:19:29.959 --> 01:19:32.958
that if you take
the middle class away,
01:19:32.959 --> 01:19:35.541
the upper class will spawn,
01:19:35.542 --> 01:19:37.959
and we\'ll have problems
from your lower class.
01:19:39.959 --> 01:19:41.958
You got to think about it, now.
01:19:41.959 --> 01:19:46.958
Only 2% of Americans exceed
$300,000 a year.
01:19:46.959 --> 01:19:48.958
Only 2%.
01:19:48.959 --> 01:19:50.833
So if you wipe out
the middle class there,
01:19:50.834 --> 01:19:56.958
then are you gonna have 98%
of poor folk in this city...
01:19:56.959 --> 01:19:58.124
I mean, in this country?
01:19:58.125 --> 01:20:00.958
98% of us will be poor,
01:20:00.959 --> 01:20:02.958
making under $30,000 a year?
01:20:02.959 --> 01:20:05.291
And we\'re gonna see this guy
sittin\' up there
01:20:05.292 --> 01:20:09.958
sittin\' on his laurels
making billions off of us?
01:20:09.959 --> 01:20:11.958
The country wouldn\'t stand
for it.
01:20:11.959 --> 01:20:13.999
Human beings are not
standing for it.
01:20:14.000 --> 01:20:16.958
There\'s no buffer
between the rich and the poor;
01:20:16.959 --> 01:20:18.959
only thing left is revolution.
01:20:19.959 --> 01:20:22.958
When you see your neighbor
going down,
01:20:22.959 --> 01:20:25.958
you have to think
about yourself.
01:20:25.959 --> 01:20:27.958
And if you don\'t go over there
and put that fire out,
01:20:27.959 --> 01:20:29.541
help your neighbor put
that fire out,
01:20:29.542 --> 01:20:31.958
that fire is coming to you
01:20:31.959 --> 01:20:33.958
no matter what the problems are.
01:20:33.959 --> 01:20:38.292
What happened in Detroit
is now spreading throughout.
01:20:41.959 --> 01:20:43.958
This is coming to you.
01:20:43.959 --> 01:20:44.959
Yeah.
01:20:44.959 --> 01:20:45.959
It\'s coming to you.
01:20:52.542 --> 01:20:53.959
That\'s just my opinion.
01:20:56.959 --> 01:21:02.959
[ambient instrumental music]
01:21:15.125 --> 01:21:16.125
[clinking]
01:21:18.959 --> 01:21:21.959
[distant chatter]
01:21:26.959 --> 01:21:27.959
- Holy cow.
01:21:41.959 --> 01:21:47.959
[singing scales]
01:21:53.959 --> 01:21:54.959
Hmm.
01:21:54.960 --> 01:22:01.958
[singing scales]
01:22:01.959 --> 01:22:04.959
[train horn blowing]
01:22:11.959 --> 01:22:17.959
[singing operatically]
01:22:29.959 --> 01:22:35.959
[singing continues]
01:22:50.959 --> 01:22:56.959
[singing continues]
01:23:18.292 --> 01:23:24.000
[somber ambient music]
01:24:43.959 --> 01:24:46.959
[radio static]
