The Price of Cheap tells the stories of modern slaves in textiles manufacturing supply chains and the brave individuals fighting on the ground against immeasurable odds to help them. We follow Mr. Joseph Raj, who runs organization T.E.S.T. (Trust for Education and Social Transformation) in Tamil Nadu, India, as he goes on raids to rescue underage children from unsafe and labour intensive factories. Survivors he has helped rescue, testify about their horrific experiences, and desire for education and change. Academics and social justice workers weigh in on why the issue of forced labour persists.

00:01:06.600 --> 00:01:08.600
Tamil Nadu South India
00:01:11.300 --> 00:01:13.600
There are over a thousand textile mills here.
00:01:17.200 --> 00:01:20.200
They employ more than a hundred thousand girls and young
00:01:20.200 --> 00:01:20.400
women.
00:01:24.200 --> 00:01:27.300
The cotton textiles they produce become the clothes
00:01:27.300 --> 00:01:27.800
we wear.
00:01:31.900 --> 00:01:34.100
But their lives are very tough.
00:01:41.100 --> 00:01:57.300
the bell pepper
00:02:00.500 --> 00:02:03.900
the milk gave her parents 10,000 rupees. That's
00:02:03.900 --> 00:02:05.500
about 140 US dollars.
00:02:06.900 --> 00:02:09.100
She now has to work to pay off the advance.
00:02:23.600 --> 00:02:25.600
Gallery United
00:02:36.900 --> 00:02:39.600
Acceptable and kill you.
00:03:10.800 --> 00:03:13.400
What girls like kalavati go
00:03:13.400 --> 00:03:15.600
through and has been called modern slavery?
00:03:17.200 --> 00:03:19.700
This is the story of someone who is trying to stop it.
00:03:22.700 --> 00:03:24.800
His name is Joseph Raj.
00:03:25.900 --> 00:03:28.600
He is the head of an NGO called test of
00:03:28.600 --> 00:03:30.300
good morning. Good morning.
00:03:32.900 --> 00:03:35.200
Joe has rescued children who work in
00:03:35.200 --> 00:03:36.900
fireworks factories and the textile mills.
00:03:38.900 --> 00:03:41.200
And he trains teenage girls who have gotten out.
00:03:44.100 --> 00:03:48.000
Within the factory premises. Okay, everyone are
00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:48.000
available.
00:03:49.200 --> 00:03:52.900
Four years. He was stay she stayed in the middle. And now
00:03:52.900 --> 00:03:55.500
she is studying here some like
00:03:55.500 --> 00:03:58.300
calavati went to the Mills to help their families. Get
00:03:58.300 --> 00:04:01.300
out of debt. They promised a lump sum for their marriage
00:04:01.300 --> 00:04:02.100
after three years.
00:04:02.900 --> 00:04:04.200
But they often don't get it.
00:04:05.300 --> 00:04:08.400
And three years means you how to work for Thousand Days.
00:04:09.300 --> 00:04:12.800
If you are not completing 1000 days, you will not give that
00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:14.200
lump sum.
00:04:14.900 --> 00:04:17.500
Human should write to live as
00:04:17.500 --> 00:04:18.600
a dignified life.
00:04:19.800 --> 00:04:21.600
This is not a dignified life.
00:04:22.300 --> 00:04:23.600
This is a slave life.
00:04:29.500 --> 00:04:32.400
Joe sometimes goes on raids to rescue
00:04:32.400 --> 00:04:33.600
girls trapped in the Mills.
00:04:34.500 --> 00:04:37.300
He's trying to get permission from the authorities to go on another raid.
00:04:40.900 --> 00:04:43.400
But today he's going to a village where some
00:04:43.400 --> 00:04:44.000
of the girls come from.
00:04:45.400 --> 00:04:52.100
India lives
00:04:51.100 --> 00:04:52.700
in The Villages
00:04:54.400 --> 00:04:56.500
agriculture is a basic thing in India.
00:05:06.900 --> 00:05:08.100
If I am the play.
00:05:18.100 --> 00:05:19.600
Okay here.
00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:30.100
please
00:05:56.100 --> 00:05:57.700
Annotated it. Okay.
00:06:23.400 --> 00:06:26.400
The deal that the textile mills use to get the girls to work
00:06:26.400 --> 00:06:28.800
for them is called the sumangali scheme.
00:06:30.100 --> 00:06:30.600
Good.
00:06:31.600 --> 00:06:34.500
Healthy married woman
00:06:34.500 --> 00:06:35.100
is called.
00:06:36.300 --> 00:06:37.100
sumangali
00:06:37.800 --> 00:06:41.600
So to get married, they need money giving Dowry
00:06:40.600 --> 00:06:45.300
another one is for marriage
00:06:43.300 --> 00:06:45.800
expenses.
00:06:46.600 --> 00:06:50.000
So they need money for marriage.
00:06:51.500 --> 00:06:54.300
Giving the diary a wedding gift to the husband's family
00:06:54.300 --> 00:06:56.800
is illegal, but it happens all the time.
00:06:59.400 --> 00:07:02.200
To earn it the girls work, maybe 12 hours a day in
00:07:02.200 --> 00:07:03.200
lousy conditions.
00:07:04.100 --> 00:07:07.200
most of them sleep in crowded hostels inside the Mills
00:07:07.800 --> 00:07:10.400
even if they do last three years they may
00:07:10.400 --> 00:07:11.400
get cheated out of the money.
00:07:12.400 --> 00:07:15.200
This is like a prison they cannot get away from the
00:07:15.200 --> 00:07:18.800
factory. And if they are sick, they they
00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:22.800
are not able to get leave nothing. They
00:07:21.800 --> 00:07:24.300
have no such kind
00:07:24.300 --> 00:07:26.900
of freedom of movement to outside.
00:07:32.100 --> 00:07:33.100
that I
00:07:38.700 --> 00:07:41.100
Couldn't blow under the other one.
00:07:45.800 --> 00:07:46.000
here
00:08:08.100 --> 00:08:11.300
People here work in agriculture for very
00:08:11.300 --> 00:08:11.600
little money.
00:08:19.800 --> 00:08:27.200
You so the
00:08:27.200 --> 00:08:28.900
villages send their daughters to the mill.
00:08:29.800 --> 00:08:32.200
But the wages often don't turn out to be what was
00:08:32.200 --> 00:08:32.500
promised.
00:08:33.400 --> 00:08:34.300
Yeah, well you
00:08:42.300 --> 00:08:43.200
but that I
00:08:49.400 --> 00:08:49.800
okay, okay.
00:08:52.900 --> 00:08:55.400
Thank you. Thank you.
00:08:56.500 --> 00:08:59.500
received a
00:08:59.500 --> 00:09:01.200
call from that Project Director that
00:09:03.300 --> 00:09:06.400
raid which is planned on 28th is confirmed.
00:09:08.400 --> 00:09:09.800
Two days. Yeah 28.
00:09:10.300 --> 00:09:12.200
both the fireworks and textile mills
00:09:13.500 --> 00:09:16.400
Does it ever happen that the word gets out or
00:09:16.400 --> 00:09:16.600
somebody?
00:09:17.700 --> 00:09:19.100
somebody tips off
00:09:19.900 --> 00:09:21.000
Factory owner
00:09:21.500 --> 00:09:24.800
Yeah, previously. What what does
00:09:24.800 --> 00:09:28.100
cap happened? They you for
00:09:27.100 --> 00:09:30.900
their plan for a raid some
00:09:30.900 --> 00:09:33.400
of this news Lake out
00:09:33.400 --> 00:09:34.700
and this that will be
00:09:37.300 --> 00:09:40.500
Informed to the factory owners, so that that
00:09:40.500 --> 00:09:42.000
people will be alert.
00:09:43.400 --> 00:09:44.500
Maybe the driver.
00:09:46.200 --> 00:09:47.300
Repeat the driver.
00:09:49.300 --> 00:09:52.500
Maybe the messenger who
00:09:52.500 --> 00:09:55.200
takes the file from one office to
00:09:55.200 --> 00:09:55.400
another.
00:09:58.200 --> 00:09:59.900
factories
00:10:00.700 --> 00:10:01.500
that is the
00:10:02.300 --> 00:10:02.600
show
00:10:18.900 --> 00:10:21.400
I have to getting out of the Mills girls come to
00:10:21.400 --> 00:10:24.400
the NGO test and get training for better work.
00:10:26.800 --> 00:10:29.300
here you
00:10:55.100 --> 00:10:56.700
and nobody can connect.
00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:06.000
That's almost.
00:11:13.500 --> 00:11:19.100
you
00:11:19.900 --> 00:11:22.000
the cotton dust is called the White Cloud.
00:11:22.900 --> 00:11:25.400
It is known to cause lung disease among children and
00:11:25.400 --> 00:11:25.900
other workers.
00:11:31.500 --> 00:11:33.300
here
00:11:36.500 --> 00:11:37.500
of today
00:11:47.500 --> 00:11:48.600
daily news
00:12:15.600 --> 00:12:17.300
and I think that I
00:12:21.200 --> 00:12:21.300
just
00:13:03.800 --> 00:13:06.200
and it was still and none of
00:13:06.200 --> 00:13:07.800
them said he
00:13:48.800 --> 00:13:49.400
nursing
00:13:53.400 --> 00:13:53.900
Nothing nothing.
00:14:13.600 --> 00:14:13.700
here
00:14:19.600 --> 00:14:20.500
I'm telling you.
00:14:41.500 --> 00:14:44.400
Most girls from the Mills don't get a chance to study like
00:14:44.400 --> 00:14:45.100
these young women.
00:14:47.800 --> 00:14:49.500
This is mushumi, Basu.
00:14:50.300 --> 00:14:53.600
She studies labor and development in India at narrow University
00:14:53.600 --> 00:14:54.600
in Delhi.
00:14:56.400 --> 00:15:00.000
The government came up with the scheme called sumangli scheme
00:14:59.500 --> 00:15:03.800
way back in 1989 and
00:15:02.800 --> 00:15:05.900
it's quite
00:15:05.900 --> 00:15:08.400
a strange scheme in the sense that
00:15:08.400 --> 00:15:11.900
it seeks to prepare the girl
00:15:11.900 --> 00:15:14.300
that you know, you come and work for three
00:15:14.300 --> 00:15:17.100
years and at the end of the year at the end of
00:15:17.100 --> 00:15:20.800
that three period you would have accumulated enough
00:15:20.800 --> 00:15:23.700
money in from your wages to
00:15:23.700 --> 00:15:25.500
be able to pay for your dowry.
00:15:26.400 --> 00:15:29.400
And I think that tells us
00:15:29.400 --> 00:15:32.500
a lot about how women are
00:15:32.500 --> 00:15:33.400
perceived.
00:15:37.400 --> 00:15:39.900
another form of bonded labor
00:15:41.600 --> 00:15:44.900
How can you call you know
00:15:44.900 --> 00:15:47.400
people keep them in camps keep
00:15:47.400 --> 00:15:50.700
them in hostels and not pay them their
00:15:50.700 --> 00:15:52.900
regular wages on a monthly basis.
00:15:55.400 --> 00:15:58.100
But the girls really get minimum wage. So how do they get away with
00:15:58.100 --> 00:15:58.300
that?
00:15:58.900 --> 00:16:01.400
Penalties for not paying a minimum
00:16:01.400 --> 00:16:04.100
wages. The penalty is still fixed
00:16:04.100 --> 00:16:07.200
at rupees 500 even today. How much
00:16:07.200 --> 00:16:10.700
is 500 rupees would work out to about
00:16:10.700 --> 00:16:12.800
seven dollars?
00:16:14.800 --> 00:16:18.900
And all this is resulted in stock inequalities
00:16:17.900 --> 00:16:20.400
staring you
00:16:20.400 --> 00:16:23.500
in the face. This is what life has
00:16:23.500 --> 00:16:27.600
become. I mean the Forbes 2018 report.
00:16:27.600 --> 00:16:31.000
There are 118 billionaires
00:16:30.200 --> 00:16:31.700
from India.
00:16:34.400 --> 00:16:37.200
And many have gotten Rich from
00:16:37.200 --> 00:16:37.900
the Garment business.
00:16:39.300 --> 00:16:40.700
in India and elsewhere
00:16:49.600 --> 00:16:51.000
the whole world is wealthier.
00:16:52.100 --> 00:16:53.700
But it's still very unequal.
00:16:57.700 --> 00:16:59.600
This is Professor Neil Howard.
00:17:00.300 --> 00:17:04.300
What we have seen over the course of the last 30 years of neoliberal globalization
00:17:03.300 --> 00:17:06.300
is a massive increase in wealth
00:17:06.300 --> 00:17:09.100
at the very top of the tree, you know, oxfam's famous
00:17:09.100 --> 00:17:12.100
yearly inequality report which comes out at the time of
00:17:12.100 --> 00:17:15.300
Davos shows a decreasing number of Rich old white men
00:17:15.300 --> 00:17:18.400
owning as much as the bottom half of humanity, right. This
00:17:18.400 --> 00:17:21.300
is a direct consequence of the policies of neoliberalism, which
00:17:21.300 --> 00:17:24.300
are fostered inequality. The global garment business
00:17:24.300 --> 00:17:27.200
is worth about two trillion dollars, and it's always
00:17:27.200 --> 00:17:27.600
growing
00:17:29.800 --> 00:17:32.800
most of our garments contain
00:17:32.800 --> 00:17:33.200
cotton
00:17:39.500 --> 00:17:41.900
hundreds of millions of people work with cotton
00:17:48.600 --> 00:17:51.400
Its history is tied up with slavery like in
00:17:51.400 --> 00:17:52.200
the US South.
00:17:55.100 --> 00:17:57.400
and cotton fed the Industrial Revolution
00:17:58.900 --> 00:18:02.000
As early industry which often used child labor was
00:18:01.200 --> 00:18:04.700
built on making clothes out of cotton picked by
00:18:04.700 --> 00:18:05.200
slaves.
00:18:09.800 --> 00:18:12.200
Chattel slavery where a human can be
00:18:12.200 --> 00:18:15.800
bought and sold as property is now rare and
00:18:15.800 --> 00:18:16.800
it's illegal everywhere.
00:18:17.700 --> 00:18:20.500
But other forms of modern slavery like bonded labor
00:18:20.500 --> 00:18:21.900
are still common.
00:18:23.900 --> 00:18:26.300
This is Carrie Summers. She's the
00:18:26.300 --> 00:18:29.500
founder of NGO fashion Revolution the global fashion
00:18:29.500 --> 00:18:32.500
industry remains one of the drive of modern
00:18:32.500 --> 00:18:35.600
day slavery. We know that there's about 40 million
00:18:35.600 --> 00:18:38.800
people who are trapped in modern day slavery and
00:18:38.800 --> 00:18:41.300
about 70p% of these will
00:18:41.300 --> 00:18:41.800
be women.
00:18:43.700 --> 00:18:46.300
It's almost impossible to know where the cotton in our
00:18:46.300 --> 00:18:48.900
clothes comes from and so abuse gets hidden.
00:18:54.400 --> 00:18:55.000
Pakistan
00:18:56.700 --> 00:18:59.800
where cotton is often picked by bonded labor people who
00:18:59.800 --> 00:19:02.500
try to pay off debt to their bosses, but they
00:19:02.500 --> 00:19:02.800
often can't
00:19:04.400 --> 00:19:05.800
and those bosses are often abusive.
00:19:06.900 --> 00:19:15.600
This is the manager of a cotton family would.
00:19:16.500 --> 00:19:19.200
Monthly basis. There was a mean that there was a
00:19:19.200 --> 00:19:20.400
midarmers you around, okay?
00:19:21.400 --> 00:19:22.200
my name is
00:19:50.500 --> 00:19:52.800
you must
00:19:55.800 --> 00:20:00.400
actually not
00:20:00.400 --> 00:20:00.500
here.
00:20:01.100 --> 00:20:04.000
Yeah, man that I just
00:20:09.700 --> 00:20:11.400
and then there's child labor.
00:20:12.800 --> 00:20:15.600
The Iowa estimates that around 170 million
00:20:15.600 --> 00:20:19.100
people are involved in child
00:20:18.100 --> 00:20:21.300
labor around the world throughout fashion
00:20:21.300 --> 00:20:24.300
Supply chains, and actually a lot of
00:20:24.300 --> 00:20:27.500
jobs in the in the Garment industry in the
00:20:27.500 --> 00:20:30.200
fashion Supply chains. Oh don't buy
00:20:30.200 --> 00:20:33.700
children because they're more dexterous in the hands more suited this
00:20:33.700 --> 00:20:34.900
sort of work.
00:20:37.800 --> 00:20:40.800
The labor cost in the typical item
00:20:40.800 --> 00:20:43.500
of clothing is between about one and four
00:20:43.500 --> 00:20:43.700
percent.
00:20:45.300 --> 00:20:48.300
Or that 29 Euro t-shirt. It was
00:20:48.300 --> 00:20:51.800
estimated that for the worker to receive a living wage that the
00:20:51.800 --> 00:20:55.000
labor costs would have to increase from 18 cents
00:20:54.500 --> 00:20:57.900
to 45 cents and
00:20:57.900 --> 00:21:00.500
the overall increase on the retail price
00:21:00.500 --> 00:21:03.800
of the Garment with the markup including
00:21:03.800 --> 00:21:06.900
the tax would be one Euro 57
00:21:06.900 --> 00:21:09.500
on a 29 Euro t-shirt.
00:21:13.700 --> 00:21:16.400
There's a really huge body of evidence that
00:21:16.400 --> 00:21:19.400
shows that consumers are willing to
00:21:19.400 --> 00:21:23.000
change the way in which they they shop if
00:21:22.700 --> 00:21:26.200
they're faced with the right information and
00:21:25.200 --> 00:21:28.000
the right impetus.
00:21:29.300 --> 00:21:32.700
This is Michael Posner. He was present Obama's
00:21:32.700 --> 00:21:36.200
assistant Secretary of State for human rights. There
00:21:35.200 --> 00:21:38.500
are some egregious practices, which a number
00:21:38.500 --> 00:21:41.900
of companies have identified forced labor
00:21:41.900 --> 00:21:44.600
trafficking child labor. Those
00:21:44.600 --> 00:21:47.400
things are clearly outrageous. They
00:21:47.400 --> 00:21:50.000
need to stop but they're not the only problems.
00:21:50.800 --> 00:21:53.300
Lots of factories have safety issues
00:21:53.300 --> 00:21:56.500
fires the people
00:21:56.500 --> 00:21:59.800
who work on the line are women. The supervisors
00:21:59.800 --> 00:22:02.700
are men. There's a pattern of harassment
00:22:02.700 --> 00:22:05.800
and discrimination which needs to be addressed. And
00:22:05.800 --> 00:22:08.300
so we've got to move the discussion to a
00:22:08.300 --> 00:22:11.500
discussion about what's the responsibility of
00:22:11.500 --> 00:22:14.700
the brands and as consumers investors. We
00:22:14.700 --> 00:22:17.500
need to be putting pressure on Brands and evaluating them
00:22:17.500 --> 00:22:20.200
against another so the better Brands get
00:22:20.200 --> 00:22:23.400
credit for what they're doing and the worst brands are
00:22:23.400 --> 00:22:25.200
heard are heard commercially.
00:22:26.500 --> 00:22:29.500
But the brands often don't know or don't let themselves know
00:22:29.500 --> 00:22:30.300
about abuse.
00:22:32.800 --> 00:22:34.300
Sometimes the work is Rebel.
00:22:38.300 --> 00:22:41.000
But in the Garment business unions often get
00:22:41.000 --> 00:22:41.500
crushed.
00:22:50.100 --> 00:22:53.500
And the bad safety standards in poor countries mean terrible
00:22:53.500 --> 00:22:56.000
accidents sometimes happen like the collapse of
00:22:56.700 --> 00:22:58.600
Rana Plaza and Bangladesh in 2013.
00:22:59.500 --> 00:23:01.100
Which killed over 1,100 people?
00:23:04.800 --> 00:23:07.200
Or an accident that India just one boy.
00:23:08.600 --> 00:23:10.100
Rajasthan India
00:23:12.000 --> 00:23:16.300
so that's
00:23:16.300 --> 00:23:16.600
how
00:23:20.400 --> 00:23:21.800
this
00:23:23.300 --> 00:23:24.100
year
00:23:32.100 --> 00:23:32.900
Are you?
00:23:45.300 --> 00:23:52.900
Ready here.
00:24:13.100 --> 00:24:18.500
the super impossibility as super
00:24:18.500 --> 00:24:19.000
art veget
00:24:25.600 --> 00:24:27.700
a
00:24:28.400 --> 00:24:30.900
conver
00:24:33.900 --> 00:24:33.900
ter
00:24:39.900 --> 00:24:42.200
and then go here.
00:24:45.900 --> 00:24:46.900
I'm not.
00:24:49.300 --> 00:24:51.300
say
00:24:52.400 --> 00:24:52.700
to see
00:24:56.400 --> 00:24:56.600
here
00:25:21.400 --> 00:25:24.200
If you are very poor an injury illness or
00:25:24.200 --> 00:25:27.800
death of a family Breadwinner can mean you either starve or
00:25:27.800 --> 00:25:29.900
fall into some form of modern slavery.
00:25:31.400 --> 00:25:34.200
In India the falling ill of an individual or that
00:25:34.200 --> 00:25:37.300
for someone within a household are proximate causes of
00:25:37.300 --> 00:25:40.400
people ending up in bonded or other forms of servile labor.
00:25:40.400 --> 00:25:44.200
So the provision of health health insurance and widespread health
00:25:43.200 --> 00:25:46.500
coverage is an obvious way
00:25:46.500 --> 00:25:49.600
to Stave off this proximate pathway
00:25:49.600 --> 00:25:52.000
into unfree or exploitative forms of
00:25:52.300 --> 00:25:55.500
work, basically the provision of universal social protection.
00:25:56.700 --> 00:25:59.900
The conservatives would say that that costs
00:25:59.900 --> 00:26:02.000
an enormous amount of money and we can't afford it. I mean sure
00:26:02.300 --> 00:26:02.800
so to missiles.
00:26:03.900 --> 00:26:06.200
Yes, it costs a lot of money and I recognize that
00:26:06.200 --> 00:26:09.400
people are concerned ultimately about balancing the books how we balance
00:26:09.400 --> 00:26:12.200
the books of political choices. If we are spending our money on guns and
00:26:12.200 --> 00:26:15.300
tanks. We are not spending our money on hospitals and schools. It's a simple choice we
00:26:15.300 --> 00:26:15.600
face.
00:26:19.100 --> 00:26:21.000
the textile business needs cheap labor
00:26:22.400 --> 00:26:25.300
in South India. It is pulling workers from other Industries.
00:26:26.200 --> 00:26:27.100
like fireworks
00:26:29.400 --> 00:26:30.800
India loves fireworks
00:26:56.500 --> 00:26:59.000
this town in Tamil Nadu is a big
00:26:59.400 --> 00:27:00.500
Center for making fireworks.
00:27:01.300 --> 00:27:04.200
The factories are dangerous places to work there are
00:27:04.200 --> 00:27:05.600
fires and explosions.
00:27:06.400 --> 00:27:09.000
And they used to be notorious for using child labor.
00:27:20.400 --> 00:27:23.400
Activists like Joe Raj have improved things
00:27:23.400 --> 00:27:24.500
some since the 90s.
00:27:25.400 --> 00:27:27.200
There have been raids and crackdowns.
00:27:28.200 --> 00:27:31.500
The attention of internationally agencies to or the
00:27:31.500 --> 00:27:35.500
child labor and match and fireworks Industries slowly slowly.
00:27:34.500 --> 00:27:37.400
They are reducing the
00:27:37.400 --> 00:27:40.300
two arrays these
00:27:40.300 --> 00:27:43.200
black mark of children working in match and
00:27:43.200 --> 00:27:46.600
fireworks Industries slowly. They are leaving the
00:27:46.600 --> 00:27:50.300
children from this from these industries.
00:27:53.500 --> 00:27:54.500
here you
00:28:01.300 --> 00:28:04.100
this is a special school for kids who have gotten out of
00:28:04.100 --> 00:28:05.200
the fireworks factors.
00:28:06.200 --> 00:28:07.700
They're playing their favorite sport.
00:28:08.500 --> 00:28:09.200
kabadi
00:28:20.800 --> 00:28:23.400
Some of the kids still work in the Factory's part-time.
00:28:24.700 --> 00:28:25.900
This is Ganesh.
00:28:32.900 --> 00:28:33.000
He
00:28:35.900 --> 00:28:42.000
must cry.
00:29:09.200 --> 00:29:10.400
more time
00:29:43.400 --> 00:29:45.700
here you
00:30:20.700 --> 00:30:22.600
that I
00:30:26.900 --> 00:30:27.000
just
00:30:39.800 --> 00:30:42.700
the fireworks business is shrinking with Chinese competition.
00:30:43.700 --> 00:30:45.300
But the textile business is growing.
00:30:48.200 --> 00:30:51.700
These Workforce these Workforce slowly
00:30:51.700 --> 00:30:55.400
diverted to this textile Industries
00:30:54.400 --> 00:30:57.200
textile. And by the time
00:30:57.200 --> 00:31:00.800
due to globalization textile Industries having
00:31:00.800 --> 00:31:03.600
a boom to receive orders from
00:31:03.600 --> 00:31:06.600
outside abroad. So in order
00:31:06.600 --> 00:31:09.700
to meet the hardest orders, they need
00:31:09.700 --> 00:31:12.700
Workforce. This Workforce will
00:31:12.700 --> 00:31:15.400
join the textile Industries.
00:31:21.200 --> 00:31:24.200
The raids Joe plans of both cotton and
00:31:24.200 --> 00:31:25.300
fireworks factories.
00:31:30.100 --> 00:31:32.300
and party
00:31:35.700 --> 00:31:38.500
Saturday
00:32:01.300 --> 00:32:02.600
and here
00:32:09.800 --> 00:32:15.800
again
00:32:31.600 --> 00:32:35.800
learn about how good
00:32:39.900 --> 00:32:40.800
What he?
00:33:08.100 --> 00:33:11.500
Karapusami is another Tamil Nadu activist like
00:33:11.500 --> 00:33:14.400
Joe who helps girls like calavati.
00:33:14.900 --> 00:33:17.600
They can't come outside like a big jail.
00:33:19.100 --> 00:33:22.400
And also there are several death happened inside the factory.
00:33:23.500 --> 00:33:27.100
96 young girls that death happened in
00:33:26.100 --> 00:33:30.200
suicide some more things with their with
00:33:29.200 --> 00:33:32.800
their cloth hanging that
00:33:32.800 --> 00:33:35.500
like this Delta happening. We don't
00:33:35.500 --> 00:33:38.300
know where exactly why they did but something
00:33:38.300 --> 00:33:41.900
happened therefore they're hiding the supplies
00:33:41.900 --> 00:33:44.400
hiding this death incidents.
00:33:46.300 --> 00:33:48.400
Some of these deaths were mysterious.
00:33:49.100 --> 00:33:52.000
Some may have been sexually abused. We don't know.
00:33:53.100 --> 00:33:55.400
Neither do the companies who buy the textiles?
00:33:56.400 --> 00:33:59.700
What I am asking the brand what I'm
00:33:59.700 --> 00:34:02.100
asking the brands did you went to Village?
00:34:03.200 --> 00:34:06.700
You do had any interview or discussion
00:34:06.700 --> 00:34:10.000
interaction in the village meet
00:34:09.300 --> 00:34:12.500
them next workers go and
00:34:12.500 --> 00:34:15.800
meet them personally you ask them. What are
00:34:15.800 --> 00:34:18.500
the problems you faced in the factory? They will
00:34:18.500 --> 00:34:19.200
say is very clearly.
00:34:24.700 --> 00:34:27.200
Farming was always a tough way
00:34:27.200 --> 00:34:28.200
to make a living here.
00:34:29.300 --> 00:34:30.800
But now the world is getting hotter.
00:34:31.800 --> 00:34:34.200
And this is brought drought to Tamil Nadu.
00:34:39.500 --> 00:34:41.600
Farmers are protesting to ask for help from the government.
00:34:42.800 --> 00:34:45.400
They brought the skulls of other farmers who have committed
00:34:45.400 --> 00:34:46.000
suicide.
00:34:58.700 --> 00:35:01.200
Llama, I'm very pretty modern,
00:35:01.200 --> 00:35:02.100
you know guys.
00:35:06.800 --> 00:35:09.200
Welcome.
00:35:26.800 --> 00:35:27.300
here today
00:35:57.100 --> 00:35:59.100
His family makes a living. However, they can.
00:36:00.300 --> 00:36:01.500
Like trading with a peddler.
00:36:06.700 --> 00:36:07.200
well
00:36:13.700 --> 00:36:15.200
be here.
00:36:26.800 --> 00:36:27.800
tomorrow
00:36:39.600 --> 00:36:41.000
if you
00:36:52.400 --> 00:36:55.200
offered some money
00:36:55.900 --> 00:36:57.600
but the family didn't want charity.
00:36:59.500 --> 00:37:02.900
There's a man in the village who acts as a broker or trafficker
00:37:02.900 --> 00:37:04.500
paid to get girls into the Mills.
00:37:05.500 --> 00:37:08.500
Joe tries to call this broker, but he seems to be avoiding us.
00:37:14.900 --> 00:37:17.500
Families those who are having more number
00:37:17.500 --> 00:37:18.500
of girls in turn.
00:37:19.700 --> 00:37:22.300
Then the families who
00:37:22.300 --> 00:37:23.000
are in debt.
00:37:23.800 --> 00:37:27.000
These are all the targets for the brokers.
00:37:27.800 --> 00:37:31.600
Then they had they show they will tell at residents.
00:37:31.600 --> 00:37:34.700
They are looking like five star hotels. If you
00:37:34.700 --> 00:37:37.500
want to entertain they will have a TV room.
00:37:37.500 --> 00:37:41.100
If you want to swim there is
00:37:40.100 --> 00:37:44.100
assuming pool this kind of the photos.
00:37:43.100 --> 00:37:46.600
They have this kind of things. Will
00:37:46.600 --> 00:37:49.200
they will convince the parents is it
00:37:49.200 --> 00:37:52.400
is any of this true the swimming pool the computer
00:37:52.400 --> 00:37:55.800
rooms. Is it true or is it a lie? It's like
00:37:55.800 --> 00:37:58.500
it's like that is no place no place but
00:37:58.500 --> 00:38:00.400
they're showing like that.
00:38:14.600 --> 00:38:18.300
There is labor legislation in India health safety
00:38:17.300 --> 00:38:20.300
a minimum wage of five or six
00:38:20.300 --> 00:38:20.800
dollars a day.
00:38:21.700 --> 00:38:22.300
But there's a problem.
00:38:24.200 --> 00:38:28.500
At a macro level you have about 93% of
00:38:27.500 --> 00:38:31.800
the Indian Workforce being
00:38:30.800 --> 00:38:34.100
employed in the unorganized sector,
00:38:33.100 --> 00:38:36.300
which means that there is
00:38:36.300 --> 00:38:39.300
a very small minority that is
00:38:39.300 --> 00:38:42.200
actually located in the
00:38:42.200 --> 00:38:46.500
organized sector where labor laws are invoke.
00:38:45.500 --> 00:38:49.100
The rest of the workforce is
00:38:48.100 --> 00:38:51.500
not covered by labor laws.
00:38:52.300 --> 00:38:55.500
This is Usha ramanathan a legal scholar in
00:38:55.500 --> 00:38:58.200
Delhi. Actually labor legislation has been a problem for
00:38:58.200 --> 00:39:01.300
a long time in India generally has a problem not just in
00:39:01.300 --> 00:39:04.500
labor laws, but in many other places where our
00:39:04.500 --> 00:39:06.300
regulatory systems are not all that great.
00:39:06.900 --> 00:39:09.200
A hardly function at all. So if there is
00:39:09.200 --> 00:39:09.500
no
00:39:10.300 --> 00:39:13.300
debtor these practices then obviously you're
00:39:13.300 --> 00:39:15.000
going to have a continuance of the practice.
00:39:16.700 --> 00:39:19.200
We must remember too that these are places where there's very little
00:39:19.200 --> 00:39:20.000
unionization.
00:39:21.500 --> 00:39:24.300
So if you don't unionize and you don't have a regulatory agency
00:39:24.300 --> 00:39:27.400
that does the work that it's supposed to do and they don't actually believe that
00:39:27.400 --> 00:39:30.700
it can be done. And therefore what's the point obviously that
00:39:30.700 --> 00:39:32.100
situation is not going to change.
00:39:33.400 --> 00:39:36.500
A problem is not what we have in the law. The problem is how seriously do
00:39:36.500 --> 00:39:39.000
you take the law and believe that it should be
00:39:39.700 --> 00:39:42.400
enforced. It's a lot easier to pass a lower than it is to enforce the
00:39:42.400 --> 00:39:45.500
law and there are plenty of researchers who would
00:39:45.500 --> 00:39:49.000
make the case plenty of Labor activists who would make the case that governments around
00:39:48.100 --> 00:39:51.200
the world are passing the laws that make them
00:39:51.200 --> 00:39:54.400
look good in the way that big corporates are
00:39:54.400 --> 00:39:57.700
putting in place codes of conduct that make them look like ethical Traders
00:39:57.700 --> 00:40:00.300
all while knowing that actually in practice. There
00:40:00.300 --> 00:40:03.400
is no chance of this stuff being enforced those laws
00:40:03.400 --> 00:40:06.200
go are important, but they
00:40:06.200 --> 00:40:07.000
only go so far.
00:40:07.700 --> 00:40:10.200
And our experience with them is that a lot
00:40:10.200 --> 00:40:13.200
of companies simply decide not to report. There's
00:40:13.200 --> 00:40:16.500
not much consequence. If they don't all of this depends
00:40:16.500 --> 00:40:20.600
on us. It depends on citizens consumers
00:40:19.600 --> 00:40:22.300
saying these things
00:40:22.300 --> 00:40:23.400
matter to us.
00:40:41.400 --> 00:40:45.200
We got married in the year 1996.
00:40:46.500 --> 00:40:47.800
22 years
00:40:50.800 --> 00:40:50.800
you
00:40:56.500 --> 00:40:59.700
yes, there are two types of marriages one is
00:40:59.700 --> 00:41:02.100
love marriage. Another one is
00:41:02.100 --> 00:41:02.700
arranged marriage.
00:41:03.500 --> 00:41:04.900
We have arranged marriage.
00:41:06.300 --> 00:41:07.800
After marriage, we love each other.
00:41:09.500 --> 00:41:12.900
We love each other my Hindu Hindu.
00:41:13.600 --> 00:41:15.900
Hindu Hindu same belongs to Hindu religious
00:41:17.500 --> 00:41:18.900
He's Christianity.
00:41:20.100 --> 00:41:24.600
Had he saw job is very Noble cast.
00:41:25.100 --> 00:41:25.800
He's working.
00:41:26.800 --> 00:41:27.500
devoted
00:41:28.100 --> 00:41:29.200
so I like very much.
00:41:30.000 --> 00:41:30.300
Yes.
00:41:33.200 --> 00:41:36.700
I belongs to Roman Catholic Christian Roman Catholic. I
00:41:36.700 --> 00:41:40.000
respect my parents and they
00:41:39.200 --> 00:41:42.200
are giving Rich values to
00:41:42.200 --> 00:41:42.500
us.
00:41:43.500 --> 00:41:45.700
And they are the strength for us.
00:41:46.500 --> 00:41:50.200
Every morning I get blessings from them then I
00:41:49.200 --> 00:41:51.500
start my work.
00:41:52.500 --> 00:41:55.300
This this is my father. This is my
00:41:55.300 --> 00:41:55.500
mother.
00:41:58.200 --> 00:41:58.500
Yeah.
00:41:59.700 --> 00:42:01.700
So this is our prayer room.
00:42:02.400 --> 00:42:05.400
Morning, we come here and we
00:42:05.400 --> 00:42:07.400
sit and meditate.
00:42:08.800 --> 00:42:11.800
Very few minutes. This will give you energy for
00:42:11.800 --> 00:42:12.800
us to do the work.
00:42:14.500 --> 00:42:16.900
So what originally inspired you to do your work?
00:42:18.200 --> 00:42:21.200
That is a new thing in the
00:42:21.200 --> 00:42:24.800
church. That is a Liberation theology.
00:42:26.200 --> 00:42:29.900
That Liberation theology makes me to think
00:42:29.900 --> 00:42:33.300
of people not in the worshiping
00:42:32.300 --> 00:42:35.700
God is not a thing serving. The
00:42:35.700 --> 00:42:38.400
people is the mission That's The
00:42:38.400 --> 00:42:40.400
Liberation challenge that I perceived.
00:42:45.400 --> 00:42:48.200
Joe has come to the main government office for the district.
00:42:49.100 --> 00:42:52.400
To do the final planning for the raids tomorrow morning?
00:43:10.600 --> 00:43:12.700
The government's focus is child labor.
00:43:13.400 --> 00:43:17.000
But Joe's also worried about the wider abuse in this amongoli
00:43:16.600 --> 00:43:19.300
schemeanor against through the
00:43:19.300 --> 00:43:22.400
industry. We support the support. Our people that
00:43:22.400 --> 00:43:26.400
is a basically enjoyed against
00:43:26.400 --> 00:43:30.000
the industries, but that should be a proper
00:43:29.300 --> 00:43:31.200
ethics and models.
00:43:34.200 --> 00:43:35.600
know you
00:43:42.200 --> 00:43:50.600
you
00:44:02.600 --> 00:44:05.100
the owners do they ever
00:44:05.100 --> 00:44:08.700
go to prison? Okay to jail.
00:44:08.700 --> 00:44:09.500
No.
00:44:10.200 --> 00:44:11.000
our energy
00:44:18.300 --> 00:44:19.200
here
00:44:23.300 --> 00:44:29.900
at least
00:44:29.900 --> 00:44:33.000
added the generation on the officials at
00:44:32.000 --> 00:44:34.500
least Society.
00:44:39.100 --> 00:44:42.100
The meeting ends with finalizing plans for the raid tomorrow.
00:44:42.800 --> 00:44:45.100
This is a district headquarters. This is
00:44:45.100 --> 00:44:48.100
really Bluetooth though officials are holding back
00:44:48.100 --> 00:44:50.200
the details from Joe and his colleague.
00:44:57.200 --> 00:44:58.000
The Raid is on
00:44:59.200 --> 00:45:02.300
there are lots of government officials and playing close police.
00:45:03.300 --> 00:45:05.600
Only Joe and his assistant aren't from the government.
00:45:11.600 --> 00:45:14.700
The raids begin on fireworks factories where there's
00:45:14.700 --> 00:45:17.900
been a history of child labor and dangerous conditions. This
00:45:17.900 --> 00:45:20.700
is the procedure last-minute only
00:45:20.700 --> 00:45:22.200
we know where we are going.
00:45:23.200 --> 00:45:27.000
Okay, the we don't know which Factory
00:45:26.300 --> 00:45:27.400
we are going.
00:45:30.400 --> 00:45:31.100
fireworks
00:45:32.000 --> 00:45:32.300
back in
00:45:33.100 --> 00:45:33.600
more places
00:45:34.300 --> 00:45:38.500
so that if any accidents happens that
00:45:37.500 --> 00:45:40.100
will not affect the Village People.
00:45:41.200 --> 00:45:44.400
Or also because they if something happens nobody will
00:45:44.400 --> 00:45:47.700
ever come to know about it. That is one thing another thing is but
00:45:47.700 --> 00:45:49.700
that is hidden agenda.
00:45:56.900 --> 00:45:59.100
If they will they have a
00:45:59.100 --> 00:46:03.500
back door, then they will send immediately by
00:46:02.500 --> 00:46:06.700
the back door very places
00:46:05.700 --> 00:46:09.600
like bathroom this kind
00:46:09.600 --> 00:46:10.000
of things.
00:46:26.700 --> 00:46:28.200
Our filming is being restricted.
00:46:29.200 --> 00:46:30.300
So we hide our camera.
00:46:44.200 --> 00:46:46.600
No kids are found in the fireworks factories.
00:46:47.400 --> 00:46:48.300
Are there none?
00:46:49.700 --> 00:46:50.100
Were they in hiding?
00:46:50.700 --> 00:46:51.400
We don't know.
00:46:53.200 --> 00:46:56.000
They make a stop filming. Love you.
00:47:13.700 --> 00:47:15.100
someone's face
00:47:16.300 --> 00:47:17.800
discreet
00:47:19.300 --> 00:47:19.800
is the one
00:47:24.200 --> 00:47:26.700
The team moves into a major textile mill.
00:47:40.700 --> 00:47:41.100
you
00:47:42.600 --> 00:47:45.900
afraid of having such cameras
00:48:02.600 --> 00:48:05.600
The young female employees are found and ordered
00:48:05.600 --> 00:48:05.900
outside.
00:48:21.100 --> 00:48:22.800
40
00:48:25.600 --> 00:48:28.900
We managed to film inside the dormitories before
00:48:28.900 --> 00:48:29.900
being stopped.
00:48:31.500 --> 00:48:32.500
They are pretty grim.
00:48:47.600 --> 00:48:50.300
And of course, we don't find the TV room.
00:48:51.200 --> 00:48:52.100
Or the swimming pool.
00:49:06.100 --> 00:49:08.800
Just one or two girls have found who are underage.
00:49:09.900 --> 00:49:12.200
Is it possible the factory owners were worn?
00:49:18.800 --> 00:49:21.300
Then our cameras areas by playing clouds police.
00:49:22.300 --> 00:49:26.400
videos, please
00:49:36.200 --> 00:49:39.500
And Joe sees a mill manager warning the other Mills that the
00:49:39.500 --> 00:49:40.300
inspectors are coming.
00:49:41.700 --> 00:49:44.700
Now yes alerting for that Mill owners
00:49:44.700 --> 00:49:47.900
will get bright to the that spice.
00:49:48.900 --> 00:49:51.100
They plan to raid more Mills, but they
00:49:51.100 --> 00:49:51.400
don't.
00:49:52.300 --> 00:49:53.500
Is this because we are there?
00:49:54.500 --> 00:49:57.700
And we over here an official who is angry at Joe says he
00:49:57.700 --> 00:50:00.000
shouldn't be allowed on these Factory visits anymore.
00:50:01.800 --> 00:50:04.400
All this male owners
00:50:04.400 --> 00:50:08.100
and the factory owners are very much Nexus with
00:50:07.100 --> 00:50:10.800
the politicians some of the present may
00:50:10.800 --> 00:50:12.300
get bribe.
00:50:12.900 --> 00:50:15.500
It's usual thing here if that
00:50:15.500 --> 00:50:17.400
everybody is accepted the ingestis.
00:50:18.300 --> 00:50:21.000
It's usual to get bribes here this
00:50:22.100 --> 00:50:24.000
Has anyone ever tried to bribe you?
00:50:25.100 --> 00:50:29.200
No, not it. Everybody knows that I am in principle
00:50:28.200 --> 00:50:31.400
and I'm my they know
00:50:31.400 --> 00:50:34.800
the value of my mind. So nobody will come
00:50:34.800 --> 00:50:37.400
and come and approach us.
00:50:40.200 --> 00:50:43.800
But the issue that Joe cares about all the exploitation in
00:50:43.800 --> 00:50:46.200
the sumonguli scheme seems to have been
00:50:46.200 --> 00:50:47.200
ignored in the raid.
00:50:47.900 --> 00:50:50.700
Which was focused only on just making sure there
00:50:50.700 --> 00:50:52.200
were no actual children working.
00:50:53.800 --> 00:50:57.300
Ultimately, we are rescuing particular categories
00:50:56.300 --> 00:50:59.600
of individual that the funders
00:50:59.600 --> 00:51:02.100
determine as worthy of being saved. Typically. This will
00:51:02.100 --> 00:51:05.400
be children because as I say children hold this huge symbolic fact
00:51:05.400 --> 00:51:08.500
value, so there is a there is a there is
00:51:08.500 --> 00:51:11.800
a contradiction ultimately here between rescuing certain
00:51:11.800 --> 00:51:14.600
kinds of individuals and in the process covering
00:51:14.600 --> 00:51:17.600
over the entire system, which ensures that everybody else is basically suffering
00:51:17.600 --> 00:51:18.900
the same kinds of exploitation.
00:51:21.300 --> 00:51:23.400
Joe has a new plan.
00:51:24.400 --> 00:51:27.500
Every few months there are meetings of all the people in a
00:51:27.500 --> 00:51:29.100
district called a grammar, Saba.
00:51:29.900 --> 00:51:32.300
Joe wants to go to one of these meetings and persuade them
00:51:32.300 --> 00:51:35.900
to ban the sumonguli scheme drama survived
00:51:35.900 --> 00:51:39.000
a grassroak level democrating meeting
00:51:38.900 --> 00:51:41.600
where the village issues are
00:51:41.600 --> 00:51:44.600
discussed here itself. This paper should
00:51:44.600 --> 00:51:47.600
speak out. What are the personal cons?
00:51:47.600 --> 00:51:50.600
What are really effects of these children working
00:51:50.600 --> 00:51:53.600
in the middle as a slaves as as
00:51:53.600 --> 00:51:54.900
in the cage?
00:51:56.400 --> 00:51:58.600
This has to be discussed tomorrow.
00:52:00.500 --> 00:52:04.400
All children should be enrolled in the schools. That's
00:52:03.400 --> 00:52:05.600
the environment campaign.
00:52:07.600 --> 00:52:10.900
That the evil practice of this mongoli
00:52:10.900 --> 00:52:13.600
scheme should be stopped in
00:52:13.600 --> 00:52:15.000
The Villages.
00:52:15.600 --> 00:52:19.000
Do you think you'll succeed? Yes. Sure. Sure. We make
00:52:18.600 --> 00:52:20.800
we make the ground already.
00:52:28.600 --> 00:52:31.300
Joe is visiting Vidya the girl who
00:52:31.300 --> 00:52:34.600
wept describing her time at the Mill before she came to Joe's
00:52:34.600 --> 00:52:34.800
NGO.
00:52:36.100 --> 00:52:38.800
She still has breathing problems and when she worked in the factory.
00:52:41.900 --> 00:52:44.700
Or no more alarmed and
00:52:44.700 --> 00:52:46.700
the play alone the Messiah.
00:52:47.600 --> 00:52:55.500
A proponent that I really a
00:52:51.500 --> 00:52:55.900
treatment
00:52:55.900 --> 00:52:56.900
at the prayer every year.
00:52:58.600 --> 00:53:02.400
It no still on earlier
00:53:02.400 --> 00:53:02.800
convention.
00:53:03.900 --> 00:53:04.000
here
00:53:31.100 --> 00:53:32.500
Yeah, I know another day.
00:53:38.500 --> 00:53:45.700
here tomorrow
00:54:07.200 --> 00:54:10.700
Primary Joe has an idea for videos
00:54:10.700 --> 00:54:11.200
treatment.
00:54:14.500 --> 00:54:17.500
The application everybody.
00:54:43.600 --> 00:54:45.300
Video is making a living.
00:54:46.300 --> 00:54:49.300
But when a raid rescues a girl she will lose her income
00:54:49.300 --> 00:54:51.700
which might have been essential for their family.
00:54:54.400 --> 00:54:57.300
But there's an immediate problem like the girl that
00:54:57.300 --> 00:55:01.100
you rescued from The Raid her income stops,
00:55:00.100 --> 00:55:01.900
right?
00:55:02.700 --> 00:55:05.300
So her family suffered a
00:55:05.300 --> 00:55:08.600
lot will suffer which which they are. They
00:55:08.600 --> 00:55:11.100
are expecting her salary to for feed the
00:55:11.100 --> 00:55:11.600
families.
00:55:13.200 --> 00:55:16.200
We have a vocational training centers here
00:55:16.200 --> 00:55:19.800
different skills one is computer. Another is
00:55:19.800 --> 00:55:22.700
tailoring. Another one is beautician. So
00:55:22.700 --> 00:55:25.400
at that time we convince the parents
00:55:25.400 --> 00:55:29.000
this training period take three
00:55:28.300 --> 00:55:32.100
months to six months. Then this loss
00:55:31.100 --> 00:55:34.700
of income will be compensated with higher
00:55:34.700 --> 00:55:35.100
income.
00:55:36.400 --> 00:55:39.700
That kind of convincing mechanisms that
00:55:39.700 --> 00:55:42.500
they have put for put with the families.
00:55:43.500 --> 00:55:44.100
are
00:55:46.200 --> 00:55:46.500
here
00:56:17.200 --> 00:56:20.600
Joe has come back to this Village to
00:56:20.600 --> 00:56:21.700
visit Ganesh.
00:56:22.400 --> 00:56:25.300
He's a little boy you went to work in fireworks because his father was
00:56:25.300 --> 00:56:26.000
drinking a lot.
00:56:26.700 --> 00:56:28.400
He's gotten out of the factory now.
00:56:36.800 --> 00:56:41.500
For any mother mother here.
00:56:44.900 --> 00:56:57.300
It is from here.
00:57:18.300 --> 00:57:21.300
parallel removal
00:57:26.400 --> 00:57:30.600
and you
00:57:40.900 --> 00:57:41.200
I I
00:57:49.100 --> 00:57:51.700
here you
00:58:22.000 --> 00:58:22.500
Yeah.
00:58:23.500 --> 00:58:30.800
That's right. Okay, right.
00:58:30.800 --> 00:58:32.600
You don't really?
00:58:42.200 --> 00:58:47.000
understand
00:59:17.300 --> 00:59:24.100
here continue
01:00:03.800 --> 01:00:06.400
Most of the labor
01:00:06.400 --> 01:00:09.800
abuses, of course go unnoticed by the clothing brand owners
01:00:09.800 --> 01:00:12.900
far away at the top of the continent textile
01:00:12.900 --> 01:00:13.500
supply chain.
01:00:16.800 --> 01:00:19.900
Those who are operating up here. The top tier folks aren't
01:00:19.900 --> 01:00:22.200
necessarily aware and perhaps aren't interested in
01:00:22.200 --> 01:00:25.400
being aware of what's happening at the bottom tears of
01:00:25.400 --> 01:00:28.700
their supply chains. The reality is that the systems at
01:00:28.700 --> 01:00:31.800
the head of which they sit are such that they don't
01:00:31.800 --> 01:00:34.000
really know what's going on down here or they don't
01:00:34.200 --> 01:00:37.200
have direct feedback mechanisms that tell them what's happening down here
01:00:37.200 --> 01:00:38.500
and that's obviously a problem.
01:00:40.400 --> 01:00:43.300
Karapassami's team in Tamil Nadu is
01:00:43.300 --> 01:00:46.000
now using a new way for girls and women in the
01:00:46.500 --> 01:00:48.400
Garment industry to get their voices heard.
01:00:49.100 --> 01:00:50.500
perhaps by the brand owners
01:01:03.500 --> 01:01:06.400
Canadian company called alula has set up a way
01:01:06.400 --> 01:01:09.200
via a cell phone for them to answer questions about their
01:01:09.200 --> 01:01:10.000
work conditions.
01:01:13.100 --> 01:01:18.400
Good news, please.
01:01:21.500 --> 01:01:22.800
It's completely anonymous.
01:01:23.300 --> 01:01:25.100
And it may help expose abuses.
01:01:34.900 --> 01:01:36.400
now when the number called
01:01:49.400 --> 01:01:51.700
here companies
01:02:24.100 --> 01:02:25.400
and we'll hear
01:02:27.200 --> 01:02:30.100
right at the end of the day we get help from the
01:02:30.100 --> 01:02:33.600
older man in the village to track down the broker. He's the
01:02:33.600 --> 01:02:35.600
man who arranges for girls to go to the Mills.
01:02:37.000 --> 01:02:37.200
Yeah.
01:02:44.700 --> 01:02:45.300
but now
01:02:51.600 --> 01:02:53.000
It is.
01:02:54.400 --> 01:02:55.700
because you
01:03:12.100 --> 01:03:22.200
Are welcome everybody?
01:03:31.600 --> 01:03:32.300
Here welcome.
01:03:50.800 --> 01:04:06.200
Everyone welcome.
01:04:18.800 --> 01:04:21.500
Come selling it, but now come selling
01:04:21.500 --> 01:04:21.600
it.
01:04:22.500 --> 01:04:23.700
Now answer today.
01:04:43.800 --> 01:04:46.600
It's only the adults who seem to talk about marrying the
01:04:46.600 --> 01:04:47.300
girls off.
01:04:48.400 --> 01:04:50.500
the girls themselves never speak of marriage
01:04:51.300 --> 01:04:54.300
Only helping their families studying and having a career.
01:05:04.200 --> 01:05:06.900
It's the day of the grandma Sabbath The Village meeting.
01:05:08.500 --> 01:05:11.400
Joe is going to ask the people to vote to stop girls
01:05:11.400 --> 01:05:12.400
going into the Mills.
01:05:13.800 --> 01:05:15.200
families often need the money
01:05:16.100 --> 01:05:18.000
So will the meeting agree with Joe?
01:05:20.100 --> 01:05:21.000
You shaved for the meeting.
01:05:21.600 --> 01:05:23.200
and you
01:05:52.100 --> 01:05:55.500
Remember Roma McLeod in
01:05:55.500 --> 01:06:03.100
India gray. Tealla
01:05:59.100 --> 01:06:03.300
Valley
01:06:07.600 --> 01:06:33.100
On the particular language here in
01:06:10.100 --> 01:06:33.200
the
01:06:33.200 --> 01:06:33.600
Bible.
01:06:48.200 --> 01:06:51.900
We positive resolution on because of this adolescent girls
01:06:51.900 --> 01:06:54.200
those who are not working below the age
01:06:54.200 --> 01:06:58.100
of 18, then they should get minimum wages and they
01:06:57.100 --> 01:07:00.900
are give for any girls Drop
01:07:00.900 --> 01:07:03.400
Out Below 18 years test will support
01:07:03.400 --> 01:07:06.300
to continue their education till they complete 12
01:07:06.300 --> 01:07:09.600
standard, and that's what that that are the resolution we
01:07:09.600 --> 01:07:12.200
made in this. Thank you. Thank you.
01:07:13.500 --> 01:07:13.700
Thank you.
01:07:14.200 --> 01:07:16.600
But will the mill owners just ignore the decision?
01:07:19.100 --> 01:07:22.400
And the underlying problem of poverty may still drive girls to
01:07:22.400 --> 01:07:22.900
the Mills.
01:07:25.700 --> 01:07:28.100
You think that wealthy owners should
01:07:28.100 --> 01:07:29.900
just give more money to poor people.
01:07:31.400 --> 01:07:34.500
The attitude only that makes that makes
01:07:34.500 --> 01:07:35.400
to you.
01:07:36.100 --> 01:07:39.200
Nothing money can it's not near money.
01:07:39.200 --> 01:07:42.600
This is a this is an attitude and values and
01:07:42.600 --> 01:07:44.600
the compassion and the concern.
01:07:45.400 --> 01:07:48.200
You may not see lot of rich people can make
01:07:48.200 --> 01:07:51.300
what they think money can do anything we can
01:07:51.300 --> 01:07:53.700
we can get everything through money.
01:07:56.200 --> 01:07:58.300
But in real life that is not so.
01:07:59.100 --> 01:07:59.800
Would it be better?
01:08:00.700 --> 01:08:03.200
Can't we just reform capitalism or do we have
01:08:03.200 --> 01:08:04.100
to have socialism?
01:08:04.900 --> 01:08:07.200
Yeah, I I I'm walking
01:08:07.200 --> 01:08:09.000
towards socialism.
01:08:10.400 --> 01:08:13.500
There everything we can share whatever we
01:08:13.500 --> 01:08:15.600
have. That's that's a basic idea.
01:08:17.400 --> 01:08:20.100
But this is hardly a business model. The brands would accept.
01:08:28.200 --> 01:08:29.500
We leave Joe in his town.
01:08:30.400 --> 01:08:31.900
to catch up with RJ
01:08:32.500 --> 01:08:34.600
the boy who lost his arm in the cottonmill.
01:08:56.300 --> 01:08:59.400
It's the first time that I'm examining Ajay today.
01:09:00.300 --> 01:09:04.100
And in Upper limbs, it's very critical
01:09:03.100 --> 01:09:06.600
the interval between the loss
01:09:06.600 --> 01:09:08.700
of the limb and fitting of the artificial limb.
01:09:09.200 --> 01:09:12.400
And the earlier the better and we would like to do it generally in
01:09:12.400 --> 01:09:14.900
about two months time and here it's three years.
01:09:16.200 --> 01:09:18.400
I think he's done better than we expected.
01:09:22.400 --> 01:09:25.400
A lot of people take artificial limbs for the
01:09:25.400 --> 01:09:28.700
upper extremity only to complete their
01:09:28.700 --> 01:09:29.300
body image.
01:09:30.900 --> 01:09:33.600
And that has a huge bearing on their confidence just
01:09:33.600 --> 01:09:35.300
to feel and look complete.
01:09:43.900 --> 01:09:47.000
I believe that the magic lies
01:09:46.200 --> 01:09:48.900
in the person not in the device.
01:09:51.200 --> 01:09:54.100
And as I was telling him disability is not in.
01:09:55.500 --> 01:09:56.600
hand or a leg
01:09:57.300 --> 01:09:58.300
It's in the mind.
01:10:07.100 --> 01:10:09.800
You see the Expressions on his face when he came yesterday.
01:10:10.700 --> 01:10:13.900
He was non-communicative. He lacked
01:10:13.900 --> 01:10:17.000
confidence. He was self-conscious and today
01:10:16.300 --> 01:10:18.800
when he's sitting there with a hand.
01:10:20.500 --> 01:10:23.300
His body image completed the smile on his
01:10:23.300 --> 01:10:25.800
face. I mean, I'm very optimistic.
01:10:27.100 --> 01:10:32.300
The abolish
01:10:31.300 --> 01:10:34.900
Foundation associated with this film paid
01:10:34.900 --> 01:10:37.100
for RJ's new arm and is paying for
01:10:37.100 --> 01:10:38.900
three other kids in similar situations.
01:10:39.700 --> 01:10:42.400
Since the companies where the accidents happen are not
01:10:42.400 --> 01:10:42.500
paying.
01:10:44.100 --> 01:10:47.400
But what about the responsibilities of the brands the governments?
01:10:48.200 --> 01:10:50.200
And what can we do about all this abuse?
01:10:54.800 --> 01:10:57.800
All of this depends on us.
01:10:57.800 --> 01:11:00.800
It depends on citizens consumers saying
01:11:00.800 --> 01:11:03.800
these things matter to us. We
01:11:03.800 --> 01:11:06.300
want our own governments to do more.
01:11:06.300 --> 01:11:09.700
We want the companies whose products
01:11:09.700 --> 01:11:11.000
we buy to do more.
01:11:11.900 --> 01:11:14.500
And we're going to be we're going to you know,
01:11:14.500 --> 01:11:17.600
vote with our our wallets with our
01:11:17.600 --> 01:11:21.400
purchasing and we're going to vote for political
01:11:20.400 --> 01:11:23.500
leaders that make these issues a
01:11:23.500 --> 01:11:26.300
priority. We're not there yet, but we have to get there.
01:11:27.200 --> 01:11:28.500
we need to do is to ask the
01:11:30.300 --> 01:11:30.300
question
01:11:35.800 --> 01:11:38.200
with social media asking who made my
01:11:38.200 --> 01:11:41.800
clothes that will immediately go up to the CEO level
01:11:41.800 --> 01:11:44.700
and we really do know that this does
01:11:44.700 --> 01:11:47.600
make a difference when they do know that Brands and
01:11:47.600 --> 01:11:50.700
retailers are changing their behavior. They're disclosing
01:11:50.700 --> 01:11:53.200
more information because of the
01:11:53.200 --> 01:11:56.700
impact of consumers and because
01:11:56.700 --> 01:11:59.400
of our voices get political get organized
01:11:59.400 --> 01:12:02.400
organized pressure groups think of the leverage points
01:12:02.400 --> 01:12:05.600
who is an important lever of power in relation
01:12:05.600 --> 01:12:08.300
to a particular phenomenon who can you put pressure on
01:12:08.300 --> 01:12:11.700
to advance a progressive agenda, for example, the establishing
01:12:11.700 --> 01:12:15.600
of a transnational governance regime for International
01:12:14.600 --> 01:12:17.400
Supply chains to ensure that
01:12:17.400 --> 01:12:20.400
company X in country? Why
01:12:20.400 --> 01:12:23.700
is legally liable for the workers in
01:12:23.700 --> 01:12:26.400
countries Ed at the very foot of the supply chain?
01:12:27.300 --> 01:12:29.300
Long as Market is King the poor will never matter.
01:12:30.500 --> 01:12:33.700
And compassion is a basic. I
01:12:33.700 --> 01:12:37.100
honestly believe this that if we cannot care that
01:12:36.100 --> 01:12:39.500
somebody somewhere is leading a
01:12:39.500 --> 01:12:42.200
life that they ought not to have to lead and it's because
01:12:42.200 --> 01:12:45.400
we are all contributing to it. There is a bottom line
01:12:45.400 --> 01:12:48.200
and we seem to fall below the bottom line much too much.
01:12:49.400 --> 01:12:51.000
And the person about money.
01:12:54.600 --> 01:12:56.200
I will remember custom around here.
01:13:11.800 --> 01:13:14.000
We are not against the business. We are
01:13:14.300 --> 01:13:17.000
not against the government. We are not against a place.
01:13:17.200 --> 01:13:18.900
We are not against the brands.
01:13:19.600 --> 01:13:23.100
What we are demanding what we are requesting don't recruit below
01:13:22.100 --> 01:13:23.600
