00:40:21.628 --> 00:40:26.628
(guns firing)
(distant explosions)
00:40:27.870 --> 00:40:29.880
I was in Echo Company.
00:40:29.880 --> 00:40:33.450
A second battalion ninth Marine regimen.
00:40:33.450 --> 00:40:35.760
Third Marine division.
00:40:35.760 --> 00:40:38.613
Ninth Marine expeditionary force.
00:40:41.010 --> 00:40:42.063
In Vietnam.
00:41:31.463 --> 00:41:35.370
I have spent my lifetime
working to build relationships
00:41:35.370 --> 00:41:38.670
with academics who can
help keep my grandfather's
00:41:38.670 --> 00:41:41.883
stories alive for future generations.
00:41:44.640 --> 00:41:47.580
I have worked with archeologists,
00:41:47.580 --> 00:41:52.083
anthropologists,
biologists, and historians.
00:42:09.401 --> 00:42:13.818
I am getting older and see
the changes all around me.
00:42:21.128 --> 00:42:23.211
The changes of my people.
00:42:26.190 --> 00:42:27.123
The youth.
00:42:30.630 --> 00:42:31.593
Nature.
00:42:35.190 --> 00:42:36.870
It worries me.
00:42:36.870 --> 00:42:40.683
At times I get so angry
I want people to listen.
00:42:46.470 --> 00:42:48.753
I have spoken many times.
00:42:53.010 --> 00:42:56.253
But now I feel I need to write.
00:42:58.290 --> 00:43:00.633
This letter is to you.
00:43:04.320 --> 00:43:07.440
There is an energy all over the Earth.
00:43:07.440 --> 00:43:09.723
An ultimate source of energy.
00:43:15.270 --> 00:43:20.270
Over many years we have
lost touch with that energy.
00:43:20.490 --> 00:43:24.010
We have disconnected from nature and lost
00:43:24.010 --> 00:43:27.753
the harmony that kept our world stable.
00:43:31.020 --> 00:43:34.923
My grandfather told me the
story of the gift of tears.
00:43:37.320 --> 00:43:40.890
The creator took pity
on humans and offered
00:43:40.890 --> 00:43:44.403
the gift of tears to those
who demonstrated virtue.
00:43:46.440 --> 00:43:49.560
These tears will wash the eyes.
00:43:49.560 --> 00:43:52.020
Allowing the person to see the power
00:43:52.020 --> 00:43:54.393
inherent in a natural world.
00:43:57.030 --> 00:43:59.943
We must seek the gift of tears.
00:44:00.840 --> 00:44:04.740
We must be able to see what we are doing.
00:44:04.740 --> 00:44:08.823
We must realize the importance of nature.
00:44:14.850 --> 00:44:18.453
There are lots of things
the Earth can do to hurt us.
00:44:19.980 --> 00:44:22.293
This is what I worry about.
00:44:25.290 --> 00:44:29.433
To those without a home, those displaced.
00:44:32.250 --> 00:44:34.353
I know your struggles.
00:44:39.840 --> 00:44:44.793
We must embrace nature
and understand its powers.
00:44:46.980 --> 00:44:51.273
I fear if we don't so many more
people will be without home.
00:44:54.750 --> 00:44:56.733
My people were nomads.
00:44:59.790 --> 00:45:02.073
Our food source was destroyed.
00:45:06.480 --> 00:45:08.943
And we were put on reservations.
00:45:13.410 --> 00:45:15.780
The borders of the reservations
00:45:15.780 --> 00:45:18.633
kept us from our sacred landmarks.
00:45:58.890 --> 00:46:02.853
These restraints made people
stop believing in the energy.
00:46:10.230 --> 00:46:12.813
Now the land is restricted.
00:46:16.440 --> 00:46:17.913
The buffalo are gone.
00:46:38.013 --> 00:46:42.263
I try so hard to recreate
the energy for my people.
00:46:44.670 --> 00:46:47.590
But I am not sure if they want it anymore.
00:46:48.453 --> 00:46:51.203
(dramatic music)
00:47:15.167 --> 00:47:17.719
(birds chirping)
00:47:17.719 --> 00:47:21.636
(singing in foreign language)
00:47:44.449 --> 00:47:47.116
(crowd chatter)
00:47:56.319 --> 00:47:58.320
- [Grant] I want to
start off by telling you
00:47:58.320 --> 00:48:01.079
some things that happened to my people.
00:48:01.079 --> 00:48:02.820
- [Red Shirt Speaker] What
we as Crow had to go through.
00:48:02.820 --> 00:48:05.040
- [Female Speaker] Native
Americans are expected
00:48:05.040 --> 00:48:10.040
to assimilate into white
culture, European culture.
00:48:10.680 --> 00:48:13.287
- We try to survive on this land.
00:48:13.287 --> 00:48:15.090
- [Glasses Speaker] And
we were nearly wiped out.
00:48:15.090 --> 00:48:17.040
It's not a pleasant history.
00:48:17.040 --> 00:48:19.207
It's an unfortunate
history, it's a sad history.
00:48:19.207 --> 00:48:21.130
- [Red Shirt Speaker] Christopher Columbus
00:48:21.130 --> 00:48:23.521
came to the Caribbean and
in Santo Domingo supposedly.
00:48:23.521 --> 00:48:25.071
- [Glasses Speaker]
European settlers who wanted
00:48:25.071 --> 00:48:26.863
to take possession of
this land then greatly
00:48:26.863 --> 00:48:28.980
expand the reach of the United States.
00:48:28.980 --> 00:48:31.950
- Insult some people and
called them very gentle.
00:48:31.950 --> 00:48:34.710
He also said they would make good slaves.
00:48:34.710 --> 00:48:38.880
- The problem that people
see for Native Americans.
00:48:38.880 --> 00:48:41.160
Their problem is that they
didn't become like us.
00:48:41.160 --> 00:48:43.230
- No matter what, we all
have to learn to live
00:48:43.230 --> 00:48:45.720
on this little thing called Earth.
00:48:45.720 --> 00:48:47.130
- [Glasses Speaker] The world was not new.
00:48:47.130 --> 00:48:48.930
The world had been here long before
00:48:48.930 --> 00:48:50.940
the Europeans ever set eyes on it.
00:48:50.940 --> 00:48:52.440
- It was like a paradise.
00:48:52.440 --> 00:48:55.050
He said every tree has a fruit on it.
00:48:55.050 --> 00:48:57.030
- You're in Crow country.
00:48:57.030 --> 00:48:59.850
And it's good country and I'm
glad you guys are all here.
00:48:59.850 --> 00:49:02.520
- Our religion was living in harmony.
00:49:02.520 --> 00:49:05.400
Peacefully with everything
in nature and the universe.
00:49:05.400 --> 00:49:06.913
- [Glasses Speaker] I think we need
00:49:06.913 --> 00:49:07.980
to understand the history.
00:49:07.980 --> 00:49:09.510
'Cause if we don't understand
00:49:09.510 --> 00:49:12.030
what happened we're doomed to repeat it.
00:49:12.030 --> 00:49:14.673
- This was a paradise and we ruined it.
00:49:15.780 --> 00:49:16.950
- What it means to the youth,
00:49:16.950 --> 00:49:19.140
I want them to experience this.
00:49:19.140 --> 00:49:21.330
Back home how many of
them are on their iPad
00:49:21.330 --> 00:49:23.160
or cell phone where they could be here?
00:49:23.160 --> 00:49:24.390
- It's getting harder and harder
00:49:24.390 --> 00:49:26.340
because our land had been ruined.
00:49:26.340 --> 00:49:27.960
It's not the same as it was.
00:49:27.960 --> 00:49:29.730
- [Female Speaker] How
much Native Americans
00:49:29.730 --> 00:49:33.870
have to offer really are
going to be the salvation.
00:49:33.870 --> 00:49:36.210
Is what we can learn
from Native Americans.
00:49:36.210 --> 00:49:37.860
- There's power on this mountain.
00:49:39.630 --> 00:49:41.430
Grant brings the most sacred item
00:49:41.430 --> 00:49:43.327
of our people and it's the pipe.
00:49:43.327 --> 00:49:44.640
(singing in foreign language)
00:49:44.640 --> 00:49:46.023
He's gonna pray tomorrow.
00:49:46.980 --> 00:49:48.720
- When you see a problem.
00:49:48.720 --> 00:49:52.170
And if you determine
people attack that problem,
00:49:52.170 --> 00:49:54.150
then good things happen.
00:49:54.150 --> 00:49:57.180
So you people are gonna
make good things happen.
00:49:57.180 --> 00:49:58.013
Thank you.
00:49:59.174 --> 00:50:02.174
(audience applause)
00:50:25.080 --> 00:50:28.247
- [Grant VO] To our youth, I am sorry.
00:50:29.460 --> 00:50:32.643
I fell in love with the
land when I was young.
00:50:34.950 --> 00:50:36.903
I would listen to the birds.
00:50:38.850 --> 00:50:40.500
Pick berries.
00:50:40.500 --> 00:50:42.123
Swim in our rivers.
00:50:44.130 --> 00:50:46.893
But I don't hear those birds anymore.
00:50:49.080 --> 00:50:50.823
The berries are gone.
00:50:51.930 --> 00:50:53.703
The river is polluted.
00:51:00.210 --> 00:51:02.640
I remember being able to ride my horse
00:51:02.640 --> 00:51:04.803
from Prayer to Heart Mountain.
00:51:09.000 --> 00:51:11.790
But now those trails are gone.
00:51:11.790 --> 00:51:13.353
The land is fenced.
00:51:14.190 --> 00:51:16.863
There are no trespassing signs.
00:51:27.050 --> 00:51:29.730
Now I move between fences in cars
00:51:29.730 --> 00:51:32.073
and I don't see the wildlife anymore.
00:51:36.120 --> 00:51:40.833
I see our time now dictated
by cars and technology.
00:51:43.530 --> 00:51:46.713
It distracts us from our natural lives.
00:51:49.110 --> 00:51:52.233
It takes our youth away from nature.
00:51:54.360 --> 00:51:58.830
Things are dying all around
me since I was a boy.
00:51:58.830 --> 00:52:00.963
And I blame technology.
00:52:04.020 --> 00:52:06.903
We must reconnect with nature.
00:52:42.917 --> 00:52:44.520
I think of how different it was
00:52:44.520 --> 00:52:46.443
when my grandfather was living.
00:52:47.460 --> 00:52:50.220
When he was a Buffalo Indian.
00:52:50.220 --> 00:52:52.650
And the waters were clean.
00:52:52.650 --> 00:52:54.663
And the skies were clear.
00:53:00.180 --> 00:53:02.403
I think back to when I was young.
00:53:03.270 --> 00:53:07.503
And wild berries grew in
places that can't be found now.
00:53:11.730 --> 00:53:16.730
When our fields of food were
not polluted with insecticides.
00:53:17.280 --> 00:53:21.333
And our meat was not
absorbed with antibiotics.
00:53:22.470 --> 00:53:25.110
When our rivers were not dammed.
00:53:25.110 --> 00:53:29.700
And pipelines weren't
contaminating our water.
00:53:29.700 --> 00:53:31.710
When our animals were thriving
00:53:31.710 --> 00:53:34.983
and our lives were not
dictated by technology.
00:53:37.080 --> 00:53:39.363
When the Earth was not so angry.
00:53:41.790 --> 00:53:43.866
We must reconnect.
00:53:43.866 --> 00:53:47.700
(clock ticking)
(distant chanting)
00:53:47.700 --> 00:53:50.793
I see what has happened
and it makes me sad.
00:53:52.740 --> 00:53:55.353
I see what we are doing to nature.
00:53:56.280 --> 00:53:59.703
And how our youth grow apart from it.
00:54:01.080 --> 00:54:03.723
I see the harmony disappear every day.
00:54:04.590 --> 00:54:06.363
It makes me sad.
00:54:07.350 --> 00:54:09.447
And makes me angry.
00:54:09.447 --> 00:54:11.385
(thunder booms)
00:54:11.385 --> 00:54:14.218
(static feedback)
00:54:31.225 --> 00:54:33.975
(birds chirping)
00:54:42.829 --> 00:54:46.680
I will always return to Foretop's Father.
00:54:46.680 --> 00:54:49.020
The energy is still there.
00:54:49.020 --> 00:54:50.823
And that gives me hope.
00:54:55.877 --> 00:54:58.020
I look across the fields.
00:54:58.020 --> 00:54:59.430
The mountains.
00:54:59.430 --> 00:55:00.393
The water.
00:55:01.980 --> 00:55:04.167
This is our home.
00:55:04.167 --> 00:55:05.880
(uplifting music)
00:55:05.880 --> 00:55:09.243
We must not destroy our only home.
00:55:12.000 --> 00:55:15.063
We are all together in this life.
00:55:17.250 --> 00:55:21.213
We must break the binds of
addictions on our lives.
00:55:23.220 --> 00:55:27.213
The addictions to substances and alcohol.
00:55:29.760 --> 00:55:31.263
To technology.
00:55:32.700 --> 00:55:34.443
To fossil fuels.
00:55:37.170 --> 00:55:40.893
We must treat these
addictions with nature.
00:55:46.320 --> 00:55:48.813
We must find harmony.
00:55:51.030 --> 00:55:53.283
Before it is too late.
00:56:18.480 --> 00:56:20.640
My grandfather told me we were
00:56:20.640 --> 00:56:23.163
placed here to accomplish something.
00:56:27.646 --> 00:56:29.396
To fulfill a destiny.
00:56:37.530 --> 00:56:42.530
I know now that my destiny
is our intervention.
00:56:45.930 --> 00:56:50.930
Your friend, Grant Bulltail.
00:57:12.451 --> 00:57:16.284
(singing in foreign language)
00:58:43.936 --> 00:58:46.686
(birds chirping)
00:59:19.527 --> 00:59:20.910
- [Shaionna] You girls ready?
00:59:20.910 --> 00:59:21.743
- [Kayla] Yeah!
00:59:33.270 --> 00:59:34.820
- Careful, you gotta slow down.
00:59:37.380 --> 00:59:38.213
Careful.
00:59:43.642 --> 00:59:45.283
- [Shilea's Friend]
Shilea you will find one!
00:59:45.283 --> 00:59:46.691
I believe in it!
00:59:46.691 --> 00:59:47.981
- [Jada] Me too!
00:59:47.981 --> 00:59:49.398
I believe in you!
00:59:50.701 --> 00:59:51.927
- [Shaionna] You girls keep looking.
00:59:51.927 --> 00:59:54.211
You guys gotta believe.
00:59:54.211 --> 00:59:55.044
- (gasps) I found one!
00:59:55.883 --> 00:59:57.061
- [Shaionna] You found one?
00:59:57.061 --> 00:59:57.894
- [Shilea] Yeah.
00:59:57.894 --> 00:59:59.790
- [Shaionna] Ooh she found one!
00:59:59.790 --> 01:00:02.820
Dang, that one's a nice one!
01:00:02.820 --> 01:00:04.151
Dang.
01:00:04.151 --> 01:00:06.150
(speaking foreign language)
01:00:06.150 --> 01:00:08.550
- [Shaionna] There's many
blessings for you, my girl.
01:00:08.550 --> 01:00:10.080
- [Shilea] Thank you!
01:00:10.080 --> 01:00:11.883
For shedding this for me!
01:00:13.133 --> 01:00:15.233
- [Shaionna] All right girls,
round it up, round it up!
01:00:16.110 --> 01:00:19.710
Before we leave I want you
guys to grab some tobacco.
01:00:19.710 --> 01:00:22.701
And then I'm gonna say a prayer, okay?
01:00:22.701 --> 01:00:25.530
(speaking foreign language)
01:00:25.530 --> 01:00:29.580
- Great grandfather, great
spirit, great creator.
01:00:29.580 --> 01:00:31.562
I ask for healing for
each one of these girls.
01:00:31.562 --> 01:00:32.395
(speaking foreign language)
01:00:32.395 --> 01:00:34.514
- [Shaionna] 'Cause we're all hurting
01:00:34.514 --> 01:00:36.042
and we're all here for a reason.
01:00:36.042 --> 01:00:37.980
I ask that you give us
the strength to be strong
01:00:37.980 --> 01:00:40.803
and give us the tools
to be on that red road.
01:00:41.991 --> 01:00:44.773
(speaking foreign language)
01:00:44.773 --> 01:00:47.970
(dramatic music)
01:00:47.970 --> 01:00:50.467
- Oh there he is, there he
is, there he is right there!
01:00:50.467 --> 01:00:51.467
There he is!
01:00:53.040 --> 01:00:55.050
That means good luck, baby!
01:00:55.050 --> 01:00:57.670
Something good's gonna
happen, I just know it.
01:01:24.398 --> 01:01:25.231
- Time!
01:01:28.568 --> 01:01:29.401
Time.
01:01:29.401 --> 01:01:30.234
Here you go, relax.
01:01:30.234 --> 01:01:31.400
Give yourself about 30 seconds.
01:01:32.252 --> 01:01:33.252
Relax, relax, relax.
01:01:34.200 --> 01:01:36.210
Always keep that tucked in.
01:01:36.210 --> 01:01:37.043
Keep it right here.
01:01:37.043 --> 01:01:39.360
When you're throwing a punch
all that energy transfers.
01:01:39.360 --> 01:01:41.313
Right in the ball of the fist, okay?
01:01:43.170 --> 01:01:44.056
The boxing I think is natural.
01:01:44.056 --> 01:01:45.780
You're fighting a lot more
01:01:45.780 --> 01:01:47.460
on the mental part than you are physical.
01:01:47.460 --> 01:01:49.460
Let's start to build on that confidence.
01:01:52.890 --> 01:01:54.833
Hey you can do it, you can get it done.
01:01:56.730 --> 01:01:58.350
Hey, don't shake your head.
01:01:58.350 --> 01:02:00.030
I'll kick you out of my gym.
01:02:00.030 --> 01:02:01.373
You gotta be here right now.
01:02:01.373 --> 01:02:02.206
- I am.
01:02:02.206 --> 01:02:03.039
- You got no control over anything else
01:02:03.039 --> 01:02:04.410
but where you're at right now.
01:02:06.935 --> 01:02:07.768
Okay?
01:02:07.768 --> 01:02:09.268
- I just keep thinking that...
01:02:11.310 --> 01:02:14.310
If Cheryl can't do this
then I can't do it.
01:02:14.310 --> 01:02:15.480
- One, you can't be Cheryl.
01:02:15.480 --> 01:02:17.460
You can't be anybody else.
01:02:17.460 --> 01:02:18.435
Okay?
01:02:18.435 --> 01:02:20.190
Control what you can control.
01:02:20.190 --> 01:02:21.490
And right now you're here.
01:02:22.619 --> 01:02:25.152
You want different you
gotta do it yourself.
01:02:25.152 --> 01:02:27.301
Come on, let's get a few here.
01:02:27.301 --> 01:02:28.682
Here we go, one two.
01:02:28.682 --> 01:02:30.250
One two.
01:02:30.250 --> 01:02:31.757
One two.
01:02:31.757 --> 01:02:33.135
One two.
01:02:33.135 --> 01:02:34.302
Good, one two.
01:02:35.276 --> 01:02:37.228
- [Ring Announcer] Both
girls time to queue it up.
01:02:37.228 --> 01:02:41.748
She is our current 2009 Queen
of the Hill women's champion.
01:02:41.748 --> 01:02:45.581
Let's give a big round
of applause for Cheryl!
01:02:47.267 --> 01:02:50.067
- [Shaionna VO] Me and Cheryl
group together as sisters.
01:02:51.300 --> 01:02:53.604
We'd call each other
sisters because in Lakota
01:02:53.604 --> 01:02:56.133
we called our cousins brother and sister.
01:02:58.804 --> 01:03:00.200
Didn't really have someone to look up to,
01:03:00.200 --> 01:03:01.443
so I looked up to her.
01:03:03.150 --> 01:03:05.073
We'd spend every day with each other.
01:03:05.940 --> 01:03:09.390
When we'd have hard times
we'd go out to the river.
01:03:09.390 --> 01:03:11.100
And forget everything.
01:03:11.100 --> 01:03:12.200
She was my other half.
01:03:18.615 --> 01:03:21.540
- I started this boxing club
in memory of Cheryl Ziegler.
01:03:21.540 --> 01:03:23.340
She's the one that
inspired me to do boxing.
01:03:23.340 --> 01:03:25.440
She's the one that
motivated me to do boxing,
01:03:25.440 --> 01:03:27.960
so I'm doing this in memory of her.
01:03:27.960 --> 01:03:30.060
I'm glad you guys are here with me.
01:03:30.060 --> 01:03:32.410
So let's just work
together, we're all sisters.
01:03:33.390 --> 01:03:34.770
- The boxing team is for people
01:03:34.770 --> 01:03:36.270
that want to be a part of something.
01:03:36.270 --> 01:03:40.200
So we don't do bad
things during the summer.
01:03:40.200 --> 01:03:43.170
Like burn down houses
like all the other kids
01:03:43.170 --> 01:03:45.663
around here and drink and smoke.
01:03:47.250 --> 01:03:49.740
We're like a traveling team and my sister
01:03:49.740 --> 01:03:52.593
Raven is the boxing team manager.
01:03:54.240 --> 01:03:56.550
It's a really cool
experience for the girls
01:03:56.550 --> 01:03:58.413
that want to be a part of something.
01:04:00.210 --> 01:04:01.660
- [Jada] You said that twice.
01:04:05.760 --> 01:04:07.050
- Then Thursday what should we do?
01:04:07.050 --> 01:04:08.433
Sparring?
01:04:08.433 --> 01:04:09.266
- [Group] Yeah!
01:04:09.266 --> 01:04:12.270
- All right, Fridays is our
time to get to know each other.
01:04:12.270 --> 01:04:13.323
Bond with each other.
01:04:14.430 --> 01:04:15.263
Sister time.
01:04:15.263 --> 01:04:16.800
Put sister time.
01:04:16.800 --> 01:04:18.100
And now we're gonna train.
01:04:19.509 --> 01:04:22.092
(kids chatter)
01:04:31.280 --> 01:04:32.780
Let's go, grandma!
01:04:33.808 --> 01:04:34.749
Let's do some letters.
01:04:34.749 --> 01:04:35.917
We'll do a ten letter.
01:04:35.917 --> 01:04:36.750
- [Rianna] What?
01:04:36.750 --> 01:04:37.629
No, not ten!
01:04:37.629 --> 01:04:38.462
- [Shaionna] Five.
01:04:38.462 --> 01:04:39.469
- [Shilea] No!
01:04:39.469 --> 01:04:42.550
- [Rianna] Only Jada can do five.
01:04:45.600 --> 01:04:46.600
- [Jada] When I run.
01:04:48.570 --> 01:04:50.448
It makes me happy.
01:04:50.448 --> 01:04:53.115
(playful music)
01:04:59.980 --> 01:05:02.553
I ran from the cops one time.
01:05:04.350 --> 01:05:05.973
That's fun, that's exciting.
01:05:08.640 --> 01:05:11.157
I don't want kids to
do that when I'm older.
01:05:13.662 --> 01:05:16.512
I want people to live a better
life than what I'm living.
01:05:18.630 --> 01:05:19.593
Like way better.
01:05:21.311 --> 01:05:22.953
- Shadowbox, you know how to shadowbox?
01:05:22.953 --> 01:05:23.786
Keep it to your chin.
01:05:23.786 --> 01:05:25.484
Guard, you wanna guard your jaw.
01:05:25.484 --> 01:05:27.743
Right here.
01:05:27.743 --> 01:05:29.010
You go.
01:05:29.010 --> 01:05:31.020
And when you reach out...
01:05:31.020 --> 01:05:32.653
- I wanted to be on the boxing team
01:05:32.653 --> 01:05:35.643
because it just feels good
to stand up for my tribe.
01:05:38.910 --> 01:05:40.350
Our reservation.
01:05:40.350 --> 01:05:41.183
Our people.
01:05:46.201 --> 01:05:47.670
- [Shaionna] I see their pain and I see
01:05:47.670 --> 01:05:48.990
what they're going through.
01:05:48.990 --> 01:05:50.940
Because I used to be in their position.
01:05:52.050 --> 01:05:54.600
And I just want them to
know that they're not alone.
01:05:54.600 --> 01:05:56.103
That they are worth something.
01:06:07.080 --> 01:06:07.913
- This is...
01:06:09.330 --> 01:06:10.163
What's today?
01:06:14.160 --> 01:06:15.513
This is April 15th.
01:06:16.830 --> 01:06:21.607
I'm Cheryl Ziegler Fairbanks
and this is my mom.
01:06:23.970 --> 01:06:24.843
Pam Johnson.
01:06:27.750 --> 01:06:32.750
We're having a mother and
daughter hike adventure.
01:06:35.010 --> 01:06:38.565
You're supposed to take a
picture of me with my muscles.
01:06:38.565 --> 01:06:41.315
(dramatic music)
01:06:45.570 --> 01:06:48.990
- This gray house coming up
over here with the flag pole.
01:06:48.990 --> 01:06:50.740
That's where she committed suicide.
01:07:00.263 --> 01:07:02.337
I'm just really scared
because all these people
01:07:02.337 --> 01:07:05.913
are using drugs and then
it leads to suicide.
01:07:09.960 --> 01:07:10.980
My first time ever getting high
01:07:10.980 --> 01:07:12.630
I remember like it was yesterday.
01:07:15.193 --> 01:07:17.790
Cheryl got mad, but she couldn't stop me
01:07:17.790 --> 01:07:19.190
'cause she was doing it too.
01:07:21.630 --> 01:07:24.530
It was my first time ever
seeing meth and people using it.
01:07:25.830 --> 01:07:28.050
It's the only way I knew
how to cope with my feelings
01:07:28.050 --> 01:07:30.483
is doing drugs and alcohol and fighting.
01:07:35.040 --> 01:07:38.103
Fighting someone in the street
and you still feel angry.
01:07:39.030 --> 01:07:41.490
A boxing match, you feel
like you worked hard
01:07:41.490 --> 01:07:42.480
for that fight and it makes you
01:07:42.480 --> 01:07:44.043
feel like you have a future.
01:07:45.564 --> 01:07:47.400
And that's why this is
something that I really
01:07:47.400 --> 01:07:50.313
wanna do for myself and for the girls.
01:07:51.543 --> 01:07:56.543
(rhythmic drumming)
(singing in foreign language)
01:08:02.554 --> 01:08:05.052
- Yeah, but this won't put weight on them!
01:08:05.052 --> 01:08:06.590
Well it's not heavy.
01:08:06.590 --> 01:08:08.090
- [Shaionna] Okay.
01:08:09.430 --> 01:08:11.583
- Good, that means you can take a punch!
01:08:12.600 --> 01:08:14.163
Life on the road!
01:08:15.000 --> 01:08:16.740
Cheryl we're having fun, girl.
01:08:16.740 --> 01:08:18.213
Sure wish you were here, man.
01:08:20.580 --> 01:08:22.303
Hi, we're from Lower Brule.
01:08:23.158 --> 01:08:24.078
- [Coordinator] What's your name?
01:08:24.078 --> 01:08:26.745
- [Shaionna] Shaionna Grassrope.
01:08:32.145 --> 01:08:32.978
- You ready?
01:08:32.978 --> 01:08:33.811
- Yeah.
01:08:33.811 --> 01:08:35.090
I hope she's not bigger than me.
01:08:35.090 --> 01:08:37.940
- If she's bigger than you
just go for the stomach, okay?
01:08:40.563 --> 01:08:42.213
Just remember who's watching you.
01:08:43.845 --> 01:08:45.985
There's your brother,
there's your grandma.
01:08:45.985 --> 01:08:48.513
All these people are watching you.
01:08:48.513 --> 01:08:50.035
(bell rings)
01:08:50.035 --> 01:08:51.977
- [Raven] Touch gloves, touch gloves!
01:08:51.977 --> 01:08:53.315
Go Shilea!
01:08:53.315 --> 01:08:54.148
Go Shilea!
01:08:55.675 --> 01:08:57.814
Come on, keep hitting, keep hitting!
01:08:57.814 --> 01:08:58.731
Keep going!
01:09:02.572 --> 01:09:03.655
- Keep going!
01:09:05.594 --> 01:09:06.427
(bell rings)
01:09:06.427 --> 01:09:07.260
- [Announcer] Time!
01:09:07.260 --> 01:09:08.093
Time!
01:09:11.472 --> 01:09:13.962
(crowd cheering)
01:09:13.962 --> 01:09:16.112
- [Shaionna] Our own
Lower Brule Shilea won!
01:09:16.112 --> 01:09:18.352
She won a match, man!
01:09:18.352 --> 01:09:19.870
- [Announcer] Bout number 10 is between
01:09:19.870 --> 01:09:23.453
Cheyenne Graygrass and Shaionna Grassrope!
01:09:27.962 --> 01:09:29.152
- [Raven] Come on, Shaionna!
01:09:29.152 --> 01:09:29.985
Set it up!
01:09:31.082 --> 01:09:31.915
Come on.
01:09:33.632 --> 01:09:34.632
Go, come on!
01:09:41.122 --> 01:09:43.988
Come on now, come on now, keep it clean.
01:09:43.988 --> 01:09:46.738
(dramatic music)
01:09:56.938 --> 01:09:58.168
Keep on her!
01:09:58.168 --> 01:10:00.585
(bell rings)
01:10:04.609 --> 01:10:06.490
- [Announcer] The winner.
01:10:06.490 --> 01:10:08.073
Shaionna Grassrope!
01:10:12.000 --> 01:10:13.680
- Come here, come here you girl, you.
01:10:13.680 --> 01:10:14.940
She's proud of you, man.
01:10:19.872 --> 01:10:23.289
She ain't here no more, but she's got us.
01:10:27.584 --> 01:10:30.917
- [Shaionna] Cheryl, I miss you so much.
01:10:34.442 --> 01:10:37.192
(birds chirping)
01:10:38.140 --> 01:10:40.290
- Yeah, it still smells good, but it just
01:10:40.290 --> 01:10:41.922
smells like it's been warming...
01:10:41.922 --> 01:10:44.160
- Ew, that is gross!
01:10:44.160 --> 01:10:46.643
- [Shilea] Fine, I'll just
give her warmed up water.
01:10:47.571 --> 01:10:49.233
- [Rianna] You're okay, baby.
01:10:50.760 --> 01:10:53.010
- [Shilea] I wonder how
much the cat food is.
01:10:56.880 --> 01:10:58.983
- Look, mommy got you some water.
01:10:59.951 --> 01:11:00.951
- Come here.
01:11:03.522 --> 01:11:04.999
Oh geez, baby.
01:11:04.999 --> 01:11:07.166
Here, you want some water?
01:11:10.060 --> 01:11:10.893
- Do you guys have any milk?
01:11:10.893 --> 01:11:12.122
- Yeah.
01:11:12.122 --> 01:11:13.222
- Can you get me some?
01:11:17.220 --> 01:11:19.353
Did you know dogs have seven lives?
01:11:20.393 --> 01:11:22.972
- [Kayla] And cats have nine.
01:11:22.972 --> 01:11:23.805
Right?
01:11:49.525 --> 01:11:53.310
- I got up this morning and I prayed.
01:11:53.310 --> 01:11:54.990
After I started praying,
thinking like that,
01:11:54.990 --> 01:11:57.353
then my pain kinda went away.
01:11:58.540 --> 01:11:59.957
Mind over matter.
01:12:03.454 --> 01:12:06.120
- [Doctor] How many today?
01:12:06.120 --> 01:12:06.953
Four?
01:12:06.953 --> 01:12:08.014
Four on the way?
01:12:08.014 --> 01:12:09.263
Took something before you came?
01:12:18.330 --> 01:12:21.963
- [Davita VO] My life
was very, very tough.
01:12:24.270 --> 01:12:26.103
I didn't have no one to go to.
01:12:28.440 --> 01:12:31.987
So if I wasn't working
then I would go drink.
01:12:32.993 --> 01:12:36.483
My kids, that's what they remember.
01:12:36.483 --> 01:12:37.803
Then I got sick.
01:12:39.690 --> 01:12:42.480
I have diabetes, I got a blood disorder
01:12:42.480 --> 01:12:44.073
called calciphylaxis.
01:12:45.570 --> 01:12:49.377
People with calciphylaxis
live for six to a year.
01:12:49.377 --> 01:12:51.153
And I went on a two year mark.
01:12:52.170 --> 01:12:53.790
I fight that pain every day
01:12:53.790 --> 01:12:55.683
because I wanna be with my kids.
01:12:56.734 --> 01:12:59.484
(dramatic music)
01:13:02.400 --> 01:13:03.800
- It's gonna be a short one.
01:13:04.787 --> 01:13:06.120
I'll back it up.
01:13:09.078 --> 01:13:10.884
- Drop me and hit my head.
01:13:10.884 --> 01:13:11.717
- Yep.
01:13:14.683 --> 01:13:16.560
- I tried to make up for what I did,
01:13:16.560 --> 01:13:19.353
but it feels like I'm running out of time.
01:13:27.067 --> 01:13:30.463
- [Shaionna] What's one thing
you remember about Cheryl?
01:13:30.463 --> 01:13:32.580
- I remember one thing about Cheryl
01:13:32.580 --> 01:13:35.418
is whenever you used to
take me over there with you
01:13:35.418 --> 01:13:37.653
you guys just sat down and talked mostly.
01:13:39.570 --> 01:13:41.760
- People don't even wanna
sit down and visit and talk.
01:13:41.760 --> 01:13:44.193
They either wanna get high or drink.
01:13:45.861 --> 01:13:46.980
That's the only time they ever wanna
01:13:46.980 --> 01:13:49.563
sit down and actually be your friend.
01:13:54.000 --> 01:13:55.560
Wanna have a contest?
01:13:55.560 --> 01:13:56.393
- What do you mean?
01:13:56.393 --> 01:13:58.470
You have way more than me!
01:13:58.470 --> 01:13:59.303
- Ready set go.
01:14:06.080 --> 01:14:08.780
- [Shilea VO] We talk about
suicide when someone dies.
01:14:13.050 --> 01:14:15.213
But we never talk about wanting to do it.
01:14:20.190 --> 01:14:22.743
My brother actually died from a suicide.
01:14:24.990 --> 01:14:27.107
I don't really know the whole story.
01:14:28.560 --> 01:14:31.050
But we never talk about it.
01:14:31.050 --> 01:14:34.069
(horses neighing)
01:14:34.069 --> 01:14:37.986
(singing in foreign language)
01:14:56.000 --> 01:14:59.943
- We named this team Akichita
which is warrior in Lakota.
01:15:01.394 --> 01:15:03.060
The big reason we are typing this letter
01:15:03.060 --> 01:15:08.060
is we need help for all of
us to have the gear we need.
01:15:12.240 --> 01:15:13.560
This is for every kid out there
01:15:13.560 --> 01:15:15.243
who is struggling to be happy.
01:15:20.760 --> 01:15:24.300
Does it matter how it has to be balled?
01:15:24.300 --> 01:15:25.394
- No.
01:15:25.394 --> 01:15:27.660
- These things are so hard to make
01:15:27.660 --> 01:15:29.070
'cause they're really sticky.
01:15:29.070 --> 01:15:30.897
- [Jada] You are what you eat.
01:15:30.897 --> 01:15:33.434
And I'm a nice piece of rye bread.
01:15:33.434 --> 01:15:34.890
(girls laughing)
01:15:34.890 --> 01:15:37.642
- Oh look, I'm making the ears!
01:15:37.642 --> 01:15:39.142
Now that looks like something.
01:15:40.320 --> 01:15:42.810
- But seriously, I wanna pray
for the youth boxing team
01:15:42.810 --> 01:15:46.828
so that no more girls and
people will feel left out
01:15:46.828 --> 01:15:49.470
and hopefully everything will go good.
01:15:49.470 --> 01:15:50.895
Amen.
01:15:50.895 --> 01:15:53.562
(group chatter)
01:16:02.580 --> 01:16:03.984
- [Announcer] Ladies and gentlemen,
01:16:03.984 --> 01:16:05.816
let's give all our world teams
01:16:05.816 --> 01:16:09.483
and wild west (indistinct).
01:16:16.275 --> 01:16:19.275
(audience cheering)
01:16:24.450 --> 01:16:29.450
(rhythmic drumming)
(tribal chanting)
01:16:41.713 --> 01:16:43.263
- [Shaionna VO] I love pow wow.
01:16:44.310 --> 01:16:47.310
When I'm watching them dance
and hear that drum beat,
01:16:47.310 --> 01:16:50.883
it just reminds me of who
I am and where I come from.
01:16:54.930 --> 01:16:58.953
Jingle dress dancing, it used
to be a healing ceremony.
01:17:00.150 --> 01:17:02.700
All your prayers, the jingles
that you put on your dress,
01:17:02.700 --> 01:17:05.460
go up in the sky and Wanbli the eagle,
01:17:05.460 --> 01:17:07.510
he would take them and send them to Kssa.
01:17:19.405 --> 01:17:22.193
- [Davita VO] I always dreamt
of making her a nice dress.
01:17:23.490 --> 01:17:25.110
Her sleeves were ruffled out,
01:17:25.110 --> 01:17:27.420
then they have five roses, you know,
01:17:27.420 --> 01:17:29.463
representing her brother and sisters.
01:17:33.750 --> 01:17:34.923
I dreamt of that dress.
01:17:37.736 --> 01:17:39.313
I dreamt of her dancing in it.
01:17:50.874 --> 01:17:55.874
- It is huge, oh my gosh!
01:17:57.325 --> 01:18:01.226
Oh my gosh, look at that!
01:18:01.226 --> 01:18:02.275
Pink ones!
01:18:02.275 --> 01:18:04.845
We got pink ones!
01:18:04.845 --> 01:18:08.095
Oh my god, I already feel like a champ.
01:18:12.237 --> 01:18:14.310
The team's gonna look beef.
01:18:14.310 --> 01:18:16.110
Oh my gosh, I really wanna go to my fight.
01:18:16.110 --> 01:18:17.690
I gotta call my mom and...
01:18:21.765 --> 01:18:23.957
(phone rings)
01:18:23.957 --> 01:18:25.920
We got our boxing trunks.
01:18:25.920 --> 01:18:26.753
- [Davita] Did you?
01:18:26.753 --> 01:18:27.586
Right on, Shaionna.
01:18:27.586 --> 01:18:28.710
- Just trying to find some help
01:18:28.710 --> 01:18:31.680
'Cause I wanna go to
this fight really bad.
01:18:31.680 --> 01:18:33.130
What's grandpa Milo's number?
01:18:37.230 --> 01:18:38.880
Do you know grandma Sue's number?
01:18:42.780 --> 01:18:43.680
What about Josette?
01:18:43.680 --> 01:18:45.717
Would she have any gas money?
01:18:47.314 --> 01:18:50.064
(dramatic music)
01:19:00.870 --> 01:19:02.370
Every day is a battle for me.
01:19:02.370 --> 01:19:03.620
Every day is some...
01:19:10.804 --> 01:19:14.721
I just feel like I've
been out of it some time.
01:19:29.743 --> 01:19:32.874
- [Shilea] Whatever
happened to our schedule?
01:19:32.874 --> 01:19:36.594
- [Rihanna] We need to start training.
01:19:36.594 --> 01:19:39.240
- I feel like giving up.
01:19:39.240 --> 01:19:40.657
- No.
01:19:40.657 --> 01:19:42.179
- [Rihanna] We made it this far.
01:19:42.179 --> 01:19:45.280
- [Shaionna] We made it this
far and we didn't get anywhere.
01:19:45.280 --> 01:19:46.113
- Yeah we are.
01:19:47.477 --> 01:19:50.760
We actually get to our boxing matches.
01:19:50.760 --> 01:19:52.800
We actually got somewhere.
01:19:52.800 --> 01:19:55.499
You just need to get back on track.
01:19:55.499 --> 01:19:56.332
And rest.
01:19:57.550 --> 01:20:00.190
And probably take some warm showers.
01:20:00.190 --> 01:20:01.950
- When you get better.
- When you get better.
01:20:01.950 --> 01:20:02.850
- [Rihanna] You won't be saying
01:20:02.850 --> 01:20:04.300
that you feel like giving up.
01:20:05.700 --> 01:20:07.200
- I'm never gonna get better.
01:20:07.200 --> 01:20:08.820
For real.
01:20:08.820 --> 01:20:10.020
- [Shilea] Yes you will.
01:20:13.560 --> 01:20:14.937
- I wanna talk to you real quick.
01:20:14.937 --> 01:20:18.273
The last thing Cheryl would
want you to do is to give up.
01:20:19.800 --> 01:20:21.993
Part of your healing is those kids.
01:20:24.390 --> 01:20:25.790
They don't need you to quit.
01:20:26.790 --> 01:20:29.160
They need you to power through it.
01:20:29.160 --> 01:20:33.333
And don't use Cheryl's being
gone as a reason not to.
01:20:34.410 --> 01:20:37.830
You can't give up to the first
rough patch you run into.
01:20:37.830 --> 01:20:39.450
Because if that's the case, look at me.
01:20:39.450 --> 01:20:41.370
Please just listen to what
I'm getting ready to tell you.
01:20:41.370 --> 01:20:42.570
If that's the case I wouldn't
01:20:42.570 --> 01:20:44.431
be here right now talking to you.
01:20:44.431 --> 01:20:45.690
Do you understand what I'm saying?
01:20:45.690 --> 01:20:47.740
Tell me what you think I'm saying to you.
01:20:50.910 --> 01:20:51.743
- Suicide?
01:20:51.743 --> 01:20:53.160
- Yeah.
01:20:53.160 --> 01:20:54.750
That was me.
01:20:54.750 --> 01:20:56.940
I just didn't get to complete it.
01:20:56.940 --> 01:20:58.560
You're here for a reason.
01:20:58.560 --> 01:21:01.290
You've got the ability to inspire.
01:21:01.290 --> 01:21:04.350
If you give up, that
person behind you gives up.
01:21:04.350 --> 01:21:06.360
Then that person gives up.
01:21:06.360 --> 01:21:08.520
Our people are suffering.
01:21:08.520 --> 01:21:09.810
You can't give up.
01:21:09.810 --> 01:21:11.810
Because those kids are depending on you.
01:21:13.590 --> 01:21:15.063
Let them feel your strength.
01:21:17.250 --> 01:21:19.100
You may not fix it, but you're there.
01:21:21.450 --> 01:21:22.450
You care about them.
01:21:28.709 --> 01:21:31.860
Which one should we go
through first, David?
01:21:31.860 --> 01:21:34.680
This one's my auntie Naomi.
01:21:34.680 --> 01:21:38.040
She passed away of kidney failure.
01:21:38.040 --> 01:21:39.990
This one's my grandma Doris.
01:21:39.990 --> 01:21:43.980
And this was my friend Nora Goodface.
01:21:43.980 --> 01:21:46.710
She passed away of cancer.
01:21:46.710 --> 01:21:48.330
This was my mom's friend.
01:21:48.330 --> 01:21:51.153
She died of liver failure.
01:21:51.990 --> 01:21:54.600
This one was my niece Zarayah.
01:21:54.600 --> 01:21:56.430
She committed suicide.
01:21:56.430 --> 01:21:57.873
She was 16 years old.
01:21:58.941 --> 01:22:01.563
And last but not least
was my sister Cheryl.
01:22:06.936 --> 01:22:08.066
I miss her.
01:22:08.066 --> 01:22:10.816
(dramatic music)
01:22:33.547 --> 01:22:34.838
- Faster.
01:22:34.838 --> 01:22:36.398
Like this.
01:22:36.398 --> 01:22:37.231
- Ow!
01:22:39.120 --> 01:22:42.300
- I ask that you protect these
girls and watch over them.
01:22:42.300 --> 01:22:44.850
I hope that we inspire
more girls to jump in
01:22:44.850 --> 01:22:46.530
and I pray that you watch over
01:22:46.530 --> 01:22:48.603
all our relatives, watch over my mom.
01:22:49.530 --> 01:22:52.586
The people are having
a hard time struggling.
01:22:52.586 --> 01:22:54.110
I ask that you protect us.
01:22:58.808 --> 01:23:00.930
- [Announcer] All right,
we're headed to round three!
01:23:00.930 --> 01:23:03.990
In the red corner, Shaionna Grassrope!
01:23:03.990 --> 01:23:06.826
In the blue corner, Makayla Fox!
01:23:06.826 --> 01:23:08.550
(audience cheers)
01:23:08.550 --> 01:23:10.770
Remember this is loser out now.
01:23:10.770 --> 01:23:13.774
Winner advancing and the loser done.
01:23:13.774 --> 01:23:14.667
(bell rings)
01:23:14.667 --> 01:23:17.110
- [Rihanna] Let's go, Shaionna!
01:23:17.110 --> 01:23:17.943
Let's go!
01:23:22.238 --> 01:23:23.988
- [Jada] Go Shaionna!
01:23:28.840 --> 01:23:31.590
(crowd cheering)
01:23:34.688 --> 01:23:37.105
(bell rings)
01:23:39.309 --> 01:23:42.739
- [Announcer] All right,
your winner advancing.
01:23:42.739 --> 01:23:45.619
In the blue corner, Makayla Fox!
01:23:45.619 --> 01:23:46.880
(crowd cheering)
01:23:46.880 --> 01:23:48.259
Let's give Shaionna a round of applause.
01:23:48.259 --> 01:23:49.920
She's done here today.
01:23:49.920 --> 01:23:51.398
Show her applause.
01:23:51.398 --> 01:23:54.148
(dramatic music)
01:24:17.243 --> 01:24:19.103
- [Davita] I can't do this all night.
01:24:50.340 --> 01:24:51.983
- [Shaionna VO] This is too much.
01:24:53.790 --> 01:24:55.650
I don't want the girls thinking I just
01:24:55.650 --> 01:24:57.963
up and left them and I don't love them.
01:25:01.770 --> 01:25:03.750
But I need something to cure my pain.
01:25:03.750 --> 01:25:06.333
I need something to make me feel numb.
01:25:15.451 --> 01:25:20.451
(thunder booming)
(rain falling)
01:25:44.873 --> 01:25:48.060
- Did Shaionna get ahold of you?
01:25:48.060 --> 01:25:49.593
No, she's not at the house.
01:25:53.670 --> 01:25:55.143
I hope she's not using.
01:25:56.100 --> 01:25:58.246
I pray that she's not.
01:25:58.246 --> 01:26:01.193
If you run into her just tell
her I'd like to talk to her.
01:26:05.886 --> 01:26:07.507
- How come Shaionna put
01:26:07.507 --> 01:26:10.674
RIP Shaionna Legacy Grassrope Ziegler?
01:26:11.933 --> 01:26:14.463
She put I give up on everything this time.
01:26:43.650 --> 01:26:45.210
- [Doctor] So we'll just
plan for later on today
01:26:45.210 --> 01:26:47.040
