At 20, Sara was already famous. She fled Syria in 2015 with her younger sister Yusra. When their boat broke down as they were crossing the sea to Greece, Sara and Yusra and two others jumped into the waves and swam for three and a half hours in open water to stop their dinghy from capsizing, saving the lives of everyone on board. Their journey made headlines around the world, and is dramatized in a Netflix film called The Swimmers. Our story begins when the fictionalized drama ends. Sara has spent three years rescuing refugees on the same journey that made her famous, but she was suddenly arrested on August 2018. Sara was accused by Greek authorities of running a criminal enterprise and charged with “international espionage and people smuggling”. If convicted, she faces up to 25 years in prison and the end of her humanitarian career. Banned from Lesbos and waiting for news of the trial, she lives a surreal existence in Berlin

00:00:45.832 --> 00:00:48.251
Do you like it like this?
The jacket?
00:00:49.044 --> 00:00:51.171
I like the jacket, period.
00:00:52.881 --> 00:00:54.091
Okay.
00:00:57.219 --> 00:00:59.554
Please welcome Sara Mardini.
00:01:10.649 --> 00:01:13.610
Then you were arrested.
So why were you arrested?
00:01:13.777 --> 00:01:17.030
I was arrested because I was
every night on the shoreline,
00:01:17.197 --> 00:01:18.833
handing over water and blankets,
00:01:18.857 --> 00:01:22.035
translating for the
refugees arriving.
00:01:22.327 --> 00:01:24.287
This is how I see it.
00:01:24.454 --> 00:01:27.499
How the government sees it,
and the policies...
00:01:27.666 --> 00:01:33.188
They believe that the volunteers
who are on the shorelines
00:01:33.213 --> 00:01:37.997
are encouraging, assisting
the entry of illegal migrants.
00:01:38.176 --> 00:01:40.971
At the end of the day,
I'm a full-time student
00:01:41.138 --> 00:01:42.806
and at the same time,
00:01:42.973 --> 00:01:46.226
I have a case and 25 years
hanging over the top of my head.
00:01:46.393 --> 00:01:49.146
And why it was harder because...
the fact...
00:01:49.312 --> 00:01:52.266
Imagine yourself
living for 107 days,
00:01:52.290 --> 00:01:54.901
you don't know why
you're locked up.
00:01:54.926 --> 00:01:56.824
You don't know what's
going to happen tomorrow,
00:01:56.848 --> 00:01:59.189
you don't know...
00:01:59.364 --> 00:02:01.366
It just drove me crazy.
00:02:01.533 --> 00:02:03.352
I started questioning myself:
00:02:03.376 --> 00:02:05.954
"Maybe I've done
something wrong?"
00:02:21.261 --> 00:02:24.514
I come from an athlete family
in Damascus, Syria.
00:02:25.432 --> 00:02:28.727
My sister Yusra and I
grew up in a swimming pool.
00:02:32.022 --> 00:02:35.775
In 2015, the pool is bombed.
00:02:37.819 --> 00:02:39.404
I'm 20.
00:02:40.071 --> 00:02:41.323
She's 17.
00:02:43.074 --> 00:02:45.035
And we flee the war.
00:03:03.345 --> 00:03:05.423
We are on a boat
from Turkey to Greece.
00:03:06.164 --> 00:03:08.683
There are 19 people around me.
00:03:08.850 --> 00:03:10.727
And we are drowning.
00:03:11.770 --> 00:03:16.983
I jump in the water, I take the
boat in one hand and I push.
00:03:17.651 --> 00:03:19.444
My sister follows.
00:03:20.028 --> 00:03:23.657
And after three and a half hours
of pushing and pulling,
00:03:23.990 --> 00:03:26.368
we reach the island of Lesbos.
00:03:29.993 --> 00:03:32.117
-Dad? Mum?
-It is 2016.
00:03:32.249 --> 00:03:34.967
And the story of the two
swimming sisters exploded.
00:03:34.992 --> 00:03:37.119
We got this publicity
out of nowhere.
00:04:08.994 --> 00:04:11.204
We settled down in Berlin.
00:04:11.301 --> 00:04:14.675
But I was injured,
and have to stop swimming.
00:04:40.984 --> 00:04:42.794
Nationalism and xenophobia
00:04:42.818 --> 00:04:44.946
are emerging in strength
again in Europe.
00:05:12.140 --> 00:05:16.255
I go back to Lesbos
to volunteer as a humanitarian.
00:05:17.479 --> 00:05:19.271
And that's where
my label was changed
00:05:19.295 --> 00:05:22.108
from "a refugee" to "a rescuer".
00:05:31.482 --> 00:05:35.319
How many were there? 15? 13?
-Yeah, it's all women and kids.
00:05:41.169 --> 00:05:44.964
At some point, the situation,
the time that you're in,
00:05:45.298 --> 00:05:48.009
just gets you to change.
00:05:49.997 --> 00:05:51.415
I found that I
can handle stuff,
00:05:51.439 --> 00:05:54.293
I never thought
one day I can do it.
00:05:54.391 --> 00:05:58.093
And I found this warrior
part inside myself.
00:06:11.659 --> 00:06:14.120
The shift in politics
of asylum in Europe
00:06:14.311 --> 00:06:15.838
have militarised borders
00:06:15.862 --> 00:06:18.816
and cast suspicion
on humanitarianism.
00:06:20.417 --> 00:06:22.669
21st August 2018.
00:06:22.875 --> 00:06:26.128
I'm arrested in Greece.
And I'm not the only one.
00:06:27.799 --> 00:06:29.303
Humanitarians across Europe
00:06:29.327 --> 00:06:32.517
are being criminalised for
helping people in need.
00:06:34.013 --> 00:06:37.517
The authorities detained me
and my colleague Sean Binder
00:06:37.684 --> 00:06:40.066
in high security prisons
in Greece.
00:06:43.627 --> 00:06:47.839
Free, free, Sara!
-Free, free, Sara...
00:06:47.864 --> 00:06:51.660
Free, free, Sean!
-Free, free, Sean...
00:06:52.036 --> 00:06:54.042
Thanks so much for being here.
00:06:54.067 --> 00:06:57.401
Humanity is not a crime.
Thank you.
00:07:12.719 --> 00:07:16.181
After three and a half months,
we are released on bail.
00:07:26.357 --> 00:07:28.902
The next steps
are going to be...
00:07:29.360 --> 00:07:33.114
We're going to check
the status of the case,
00:07:33.281 --> 00:07:36.075
we will see what's inside
for the motive in the case.
00:07:36.242 --> 00:07:39.204
And after some rest,
we'll organise our defence.
00:07:39.613 --> 00:07:41.843
But this is not the time for
speaking about this.
00:07:41.867 --> 00:07:43.492
Thank you.
00:07:44.918 --> 00:07:47.670
I'm out on bail,
but I'm not free.
00:07:48.838 --> 00:07:52.859
I'm banned from Greece
and waiting for a trial
00:07:52.884 --> 00:07:54.636
to prove my innocence.
00:08:33.007 --> 00:08:36.052
I break the record
with collecting things.
00:08:53.945 --> 00:08:57.031
I forgot my toothbrush.
I knew it.
00:09:12.088 --> 00:09:16.301
That's my sister's things.
There's no space in the closet.
00:09:17.468 --> 00:09:19.331
That's why I don't
like coming home.
00:09:20.222 --> 00:09:22.288
There is no space for anything.
00:09:30.398 --> 00:09:33.901
I just moved back to my family.
00:09:34.861 --> 00:09:39.115
In this house lives my mom
and my youngest sister Shahed.
00:09:39.574 --> 00:09:42.702
My other sister Yusra
is in Hamburg.
00:09:42.727 --> 00:09:45.938
My father has his own house here
also in Berlin.
00:09:49.125 --> 00:09:53.323
Okay, guys, ready?
Costas, where are you?
00:09:53.546 --> 00:09:55.340
I can't see Danae.
00:09:55.506 --> 00:09:57.886
And Costas.
Costas, come here. Okay?
00:09:58.843 --> 00:10:00.803
A professional one...
00:10:01.596 --> 00:10:03.264
... and a stupid one.
00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:10.313
Bard College in Berlin helped
campaigning for my release.
00:10:10.480 --> 00:10:11.811
I had a full scholarship
00:10:11.835 --> 00:10:14.609
and they covered
some of my legal fees.
00:10:15.652 --> 00:10:17.827
So just a few days after
coming out of prison,
00:10:17.851 --> 00:10:19.739
I'm back on campus.
00:10:22.058 --> 00:10:25.004
People say they know
someone's waiting
00:10:25.037 --> 00:10:26.095
and that's why they come.
00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:27.225
I don't believe that.
00:10:27.249 --> 00:10:30.875
When I crossed, there was
no one waiting and I made it.
00:10:31.250 --> 00:10:34.462
And I knew there was
no one waiting in 2015.
00:10:47.475 --> 00:10:48.315
You have very nice...
00:10:48.339 --> 00:10:51.209
Did you notice
that? Just you wait...
00:10:59.362 --> 00:11:04.312
I'm not sure what I prefer:
prison or press conference.
00:11:18.131 --> 00:11:22.468
They are accused of being
members of a criminal team.
00:11:22.635 --> 00:11:28.141
They are accused of conducting
the crime of migrant smuggling.
00:11:28.356 --> 00:11:31.731
They were accused
of laundering money and forgery
00:11:31.796 --> 00:11:35.508
because they happened to be
inside a car with forged plates.
00:11:35.591 --> 00:11:37.412
And I forgot espionage.
00:11:37.900 --> 00:11:43.990
Have other people been
similarly accused of the crimes?
00:11:44.157 --> 00:11:48.494
Yes, in this case
there are 37 people involved.
00:11:48.653 --> 00:11:52.536
It's the first time that
somebody expresses so openly
00:11:52.561 --> 00:11:54.704
that the typical operations
00:11:54.728 --> 00:11:57.332
and duties of an NGO
are a criminal act.
00:11:57.628 --> 00:12:00.701
Could you tell me a bit
about your time in jail?
00:12:00.882 --> 00:12:04.218
My bed just became
my living room, my kitchen,
00:12:04.385 --> 00:12:07.348
my library and a place to sleep.
00:12:07.416 --> 00:12:10.794
We used to smuggle letters
through books for each other.
00:12:11.142 --> 00:12:12.208
That's the wrong
word, I would say.
00:12:12.232 --> 00:12:13.665
"Sent"!
00:12:13.690 --> 00:12:16.571
We sent each other letters.
-In books.
00:12:16.596 --> 00:12:18.640
But I was impatient
the whole time.
00:12:19.319 --> 00:12:22.614
I called my lawyer's all angry,
because I wanted to leave.
00:12:23.279 --> 00:12:26.699
What we did was,
I believe, is right.
00:12:26.866 --> 00:12:29.104
There's nothing
wrong with trying to
00:12:29.128 --> 00:12:30.870
pull drowning people
out of the water,
00:12:31.037 --> 00:12:35.249
or trying to not have families
go into hypothermic shock,
00:12:35.416 --> 00:12:38.045
or not have pregnant
women experience
00:12:38.069 --> 00:12:39.670
contractions on
the side of a cliff,
00:12:39.837 --> 00:12:42.931
or show children they're allowed
to be children by learning,
00:12:42.956 --> 00:12:45.147
or have people not
suffer from parasites
00:12:45.171 --> 00:12:46.963
because they have
no clean clothing.
00:12:46.988 --> 00:12:48.357
There's nothing wrong with that.
00:12:48.763 --> 00:12:51.305
Do you feel that
this may, perhaps,
00:12:51.329 --> 00:12:54.644
instil some fear in
future volunteers?
00:12:57.146 --> 00:12:59.398
Going forward, I guess?
-Yes.
00:12:59.565 --> 00:13:02.068
Because there's still fear
inside me.
00:13:03.429 --> 00:13:06.838
I imagine that everyone else
on the island now is scared.
00:14:01.294 --> 00:14:04.551
It wasn't easy at the very
beginning when I got released.
00:14:06.424 --> 00:14:09.427
There's always that question:
What's next for Sara?
00:14:14.599 --> 00:14:17.435
It just gave me
a lot of pressure.
00:14:17.594 --> 00:14:20.184
It doesn't allow me
to have a normal life:
00:14:20.217 --> 00:14:23.082
just be a student,
just go party for 48 hours,
00:14:23.107 --> 00:14:25.860
just do whatever I want.
00:14:30.531 --> 00:14:34.410
And I had some issues. I
felt that I'm useless right now.
00:14:34.435 --> 00:14:38.052
Not doing anything, just going
to school, and that's nothing.
00:14:41.959 --> 00:14:44.056
I respect what everybody
thinks about me,
00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:46.589
that I'll do great
things in the future.
00:14:46.895 --> 00:14:50.566
But I might not.
I might just, you know...
00:14:50.962 --> 00:14:53.173
end up doing nothing in my life.
00:15:01.479 --> 00:15:05.316
So she comes up and she hits.
She broke these two.
00:15:13.032 --> 00:15:15.826
She... Oh my God, that was bad.
00:15:21.457 --> 00:15:24.085
She's so smart.
Every time I come from Lesbos,
00:15:24.285 --> 00:15:26.329
she sleeps in my bag,
00:15:26.629 --> 00:15:30.299
because she smells...
she remembers where she's from.
00:15:30.324 --> 00:15:31.298
It's so beautiful.
00:15:31.322 --> 00:15:34.387
Every time I come back from
there, she's like...
00:15:34.553 --> 00:15:37.181
She feels like:
"Oh my God, home."
00:15:44.855 --> 00:15:46.760
After Yusra and I
came to Europe,
00:15:46.784 --> 00:15:48.609
the rest of the
family joined us.
00:15:48.776 --> 00:15:51.696
My parents and my
youngest sister, Shahed.
00:15:51.862 --> 00:15:54.907
Family reunion
might take up to three years,
00:15:55.074 --> 00:15:58.661
my parents decided to take
the same journey as we did.
00:15:59.820 --> 00:16:02.183
The rest of the family
also crossed by boat
00:16:02.340 --> 00:16:04.249
from Turkey to Greece.
00:16:04.583 --> 00:16:06.579
But we never spoke
about it with them.
00:16:06.603 --> 00:16:08.713
Because simply we can't.
00:16:14.552 --> 00:16:18.431
I have to write my essay.
3,000 words...
00:16:18.597 --> 00:16:22.643
Stop, stop!
-Carry me! Carry me! Carry me!
00:16:23.894 --> 00:16:27.273
I'm going to see what I
can write, and just write it.
00:16:31.610 --> 00:16:37.033
So I can get ready to go out
and get in the going-out mood.
00:16:37.867 --> 00:16:42.455
You never saw me in glasses.
I look nerd?
00:16:46.959 --> 00:16:49.086
I used to study law in Syria.
00:16:49.253 --> 00:16:53.174
But since coming to Berlin,
I switched to liberal arts.
00:16:58.512 --> 00:17:01.287
It's not the best situation.
00:17:01.312 --> 00:17:03.896
But I'm not ready
to do anything.
00:17:04.185 --> 00:17:05.909
I know if I want
to do something,
00:17:05.933 --> 00:17:09.190
I want to be useful
again as I used to be.
00:17:09.690 --> 00:17:13.736
I don't have this freedom
right now to do anything.
00:17:34.381 --> 00:17:36.346
At the beginning we
were just laughing:
00:17:36.370 --> 00:17:38.511
"Dude, what the fuck is this?"
00:17:38.677 --> 00:17:42.014
But they held us in prison
for three and a half months.
00:17:43.516 --> 00:17:46.727
Saying we are spies
because our team in Greece
00:17:46.894 --> 00:17:50.731
communicated with encrypted
software like WhatsApp.
00:17:51.816 --> 00:17:53.859
Saying we laundered money
00:17:54.026 --> 00:17:56.053
because of fundraisers
for different projects
00:17:56.077 --> 00:17:57.780
in the refugee camps.
00:17:57.805 --> 00:17:59.598
We are migrant smugglers
00:18:00.128 --> 00:18:02.774
just because we were
providing medical care,
00:18:02.910 --> 00:18:06.402
water bottles and blankets
on Lesbos's shorelines.
00:18:11.085 --> 00:18:13.504
If you have evidence,
not just claims,
00:18:13.671 --> 00:18:16.966
that I'm guilty, I'll be
responsible for my actions.
00:18:17.133 --> 00:18:18.777
But I didn't come
to Europe
00:18:18.801 --> 00:18:21.394
to be accused of something
I never did.
00:18:48.789 --> 00:18:52.251
I'm banned from Greece
till 2025.
00:18:52.960 --> 00:18:56.881
And I'm waiting
for the further...
00:18:57.256 --> 00:19:00.551
judge to give us a date.
00:19:00.718 --> 00:19:03.304
If there will be a court
or no court.
00:19:03.971 --> 00:19:08.118
So far there was nothing
since we came out on bail.
00:19:30.956 --> 00:19:32.666
Do you think this is a crime?
00:19:33.209 --> 00:19:36.629
You can nod your head.
Do you think this is a crime?
00:19:37.001 --> 00:19:40.463
Did you know that criminalising
humanitarians is happening
00:19:41.091 --> 00:19:43.844
maybe a couple of kilometres
away from here?
00:19:53.270 --> 00:19:55.439
Wait, there's a body over there!
00:19:55.464 --> 00:19:56.858
Get the life jackets
out, out, out!
00:19:56.882 --> 00:19:59.190
Stay there! You're safe.
00:20:02.905 --> 00:20:05.574
Can you take him in, please!
-One, two, three.
00:20:23.720 --> 00:20:27.056
NGOs face a new wave
of criminalisation.
00:20:27.093 --> 00:20:30.376
The European authorities are
doing everything in their power
00:20:30.401 --> 00:20:33.404
to prevent organisations
from saving human lives.
00:21:03.900 --> 00:21:04.912
Europe,
00:21:04.936 --> 00:21:08.304
the so-called nest of human
rights and civil liberties,
00:21:08.470 --> 00:21:11.640
did not consider them worth
to touch its land.
00:21:23.444 --> 00:21:27.614
It was hard to be a
European citizen in those days.
00:21:27.781 --> 00:21:29.325
It felt very shameful.
00:21:44.173 --> 00:21:46.324
Everybody thinks
the trial is over.
00:21:46.349 --> 00:21:49.227
They don't know that another
sentence has been added.
00:21:49.595 --> 00:21:51.305
It's just unreal.
00:21:52.352 --> 00:21:54.788
I was in the supermarket
when I received the e-mail
00:21:54.812 --> 00:21:56.147
and I panicked.
00:21:56.727 --> 00:21:59.188
It said that
00:22:00.064 --> 00:22:03.484
that the investigations
have reopened.
00:22:03.642 --> 00:22:06.008
They added the
crime of fraud to us
00:22:06.033 --> 00:22:08.739
and we have to go
and testify again.
00:22:08.906 --> 00:22:11.241
And I panicked.
00:22:11.504 --> 00:22:14.053
I just got, like:
boom, 25 years in my head.
00:22:14.078 --> 00:22:15.159
And I was like:
00:22:15.183 --> 00:22:17.498
the other cases were
25 and they added this.
00:22:17.524 --> 00:22:22.241
How many years more? I'm 24.
So it's like my life already.
00:22:22.586 --> 00:22:24.713
But this is "departures".
00:22:25.964 --> 00:22:28.801
We need "arrivals".
-Let's just go in.
00:22:34.598 --> 00:22:36.350
We need to go to D.
00:22:42.791 --> 00:22:45.043
Oh my God, last time I was here
00:22:45.234 --> 00:22:48.153
I threw half of my
clothes in the trash.
00:22:48.320 --> 00:22:49.780
Because of overweight?
00:22:49.947 --> 00:22:52.991
I was going to Lesbos
and I couldn't pay for my bag.
00:22:53.158 --> 00:22:54.420
I was crying.
00:22:54.444 --> 00:22:57.811
And there was a lady. She was
homeless and took everything.
00:22:57.836 --> 00:22:59.666
I felt better.
00:23:00.749 --> 00:23:02.751
What are you doing here?
00:23:03.585 --> 00:23:05.754
How are you?
-Good.
00:23:05.779 --> 00:23:08.031
You look cool.
00:23:09.383 --> 00:23:10.592
Good to see you, man.
00:23:12.469 --> 00:23:14.805
And a few smiley ones.
00:23:15.389 --> 00:23:17.641
It's hard after being neutral.
00:23:24.857 --> 00:23:26.228
Okay, cool.
00:23:26.253 --> 00:23:29.548
I cannot be serious right now.
Okay.
00:23:30.007 --> 00:23:32.084
We have to focus
on our silliness.
00:23:32.108 --> 00:23:35.096
That's what people
want to see more of.
00:23:35.200 --> 00:23:36.827
That's what the fans love.
00:23:37.786 --> 00:23:39.997
Let's leave love on the side,
please.
00:23:40.164 --> 00:23:42.708
Okay, I think we're ready to go.
00:23:46.336 --> 00:23:48.844
Since we're out, Sean's
been trying to find a job.
00:23:48.869 --> 00:23:51.500
Everybody's saying
no because of the case.
00:23:52.968 --> 00:23:56.469
My own story
has me covered and protected.
00:23:56.847 --> 00:24:00.809
But Sean is just a normal guy
who wants a job.
00:24:00.834 --> 00:24:03.754
He finished his masters
and he wants to live normal.
00:24:06.064 --> 00:24:08.150
It's been a year like this.
00:24:08.324 --> 00:24:11.111
If I'm in his place, I don't
know how I can survive it.
00:24:13.208 --> 00:24:13.946
That's good.
00:24:13.970 --> 00:24:15.632
Where are you
going with your chin?
00:24:15.657 --> 00:24:18.090
I'm trying to get
elevation here.
00:24:21.580 --> 00:24:24.896
How this issue of
humanitarianism
00:24:24.921 --> 00:24:28.254
being criminalised
across Europe...
00:24:28.497 --> 00:24:31.333
How did you feel
when you realised you were
00:24:31.590 --> 00:24:34.176
in prison because
of this wider issue?
00:24:34.713 --> 00:24:35.968
It felt like chess
00:24:35.992 --> 00:24:39.198
and we're soldiers and
they're just playing with us.
00:24:39.223 --> 00:24:41.600
But at the end of the day,
we're people.
00:24:41.767 --> 00:24:45.995
It's a lot of
emotional exhaustion.
00:24:46.188 --> 00:24:47.270
Yeah, for me now,
00:24:47.294 --> 00:24:50.359
I don't want to do any
volunteering work in the EU.
00:24:50.526 --> 00:24:54.488
Because it's just creepy,
it's scary to do it.
00:24:54.655 --> 00:24:57.383
I had a lot of
requests and I said no.
00:24:57.407 --> 00:24:59.343
I don't want to do
anything here anymore.
00:24:59.368 --> 00:25:00.992
There's a push
00:25:01.017 --> 00:25:03.305
from parts of the political
spectrum that are saying,
00:25:03.330 --> 00:25:04.912
"We need to stop asylum seeking
00:25:04.936 --> 00:25:07.417
because we can't
host any more people."
00:25:07.584 --> 00:25:09.689
No matter if you're
on the right or left,
00:25:09.714 --> 00:25:12.217
no one should risk drowning
because of that.
00:25:12.965 --> 00:25:15.509
Even if you end up
not granting them asylum,
00:25:15.676 --> 00:25:18.887
the risk of drowning
should never be a calculation
00:25:18.912 --> 00:25:21.324
or used as a tool
to stop migration.
00:25:21.390 --> 00:25:24.810
It's just completely wrong.
It's illegal and immoral.
00:25:28.105 --> 00:25:31.233
I don't think that can be said
in any simpler terms.
00:25:31.733 --> 00:25:34.473
Cool. Anything else
you want to add?
00:25:34.497 --> 00:25:37.030
That you love me
and want to marry me?
00:25:37.319 --> 00:25:39.113
I'd like to ask for
her hand in marriage.
00:25:39.137 --> 00:25:41.743
Oh God. I'm running
away right now.
00:25:44.288 --> 00:25:46.498
I'm married to myself.
00:25:48.208 --> 00:25:50.794
I can imagine you would do that.
00:25:51.461 --> 00:25:54.256
Okay, what's next? Good?
00:25:54.631 --> 00:25:56.259
Yeah, good job!
00:25:58.677 --> 00:26:00.737
You want to go
somewhere after this?
00:26:00.762 --> 00:26:01.863
To meet my friend.
00:26:01.888 --> 00:26:03.807
She says she's going with you.
-Where?
00:26:03.974 --> 00:26:06.876
Close to here.
We're going for one drink.
00:26:06.900 --> 00:26:08.095
That's it, you're coming.
00:26:08.228 --> 00:26:10.272
We are just very afraid.
00:26:10.439 --> 00:26:12.216
All these stories
from your nightlife.
00:26:12.240 --> 00:26:14.151
We're not going partying...
00:26:14.176 --> 00:26:17.004
What's that wild club in Berlin?
-Berghain.
00:26:17.029 --> 00:26:18.572
Berghaus?
-Berghain.
00:26:18.739 --> 00:26:20.991
Berghain.
She's a resident there now.
00:26:21.215 --> 00:26:23.258
My nightlife is on the weekend.
00:26:23.282 --> 00:26:25.637
If I go, I'm not
bringing any of you.
00:26:25.662 --> 00:26:28.031
Because I don't
babysit anyone...
00:26:28.055 --> 00:26:29.124
Nice!
00:26:29.291 --> 00:26:31.710
And I...
-No babysitting.
00:26:31.877 --> 00:26:33.724
"There's my friend!
00:26:33.755 --> 00:26:35.471
I need to check on him!"
I don't do this.
00:26:35.631 --> 00:26:37.777
I go myself,
I meet my friends there.
00:26:37.802 --> 00:26:40.093
If we meet on the
dance floor, we meet.
00:26:40.260 --> 00:26:42.178
If not, I dance on
my own, it's fine.
00:26:42.202 --> 00:26:44.448
Or I make new friends.
00:26:44.473 --> 00:26:46.226
This is where you
thrive and I don't.
00:26:46.250 --> 00:26:48.560
Usually I become
very talkative.
00:26:48.727 --> 00:26:50.023
To the level that
my friends are like:
00:26:50.047 --> 00:26:51.938
"Sara, shut up and dance."
00:26:52.105 --> 00:26:54.426
I go to another corner
where there are strangers
00:26:54.450 --> 00:26:55.859
and talk to them.
00:26:56.735 --> 00:27:00.364
Getting to know them
because I just cannot be quiet.
00:27:17.756 --> 00:27:20.676
Madness is me on the fucking
dance floor. When I dance,
00:27:21.009 --> 00:27:23.220
the whole dance floor
is so crowded,
00:27:23.387 --> 00:27:27.015
and then around me,
there's a bit of space.
00:27:27.307 --> 00:27:30.510
People are afraid when
I'm dancing that I'll hit them.
00:27:30.560 --> 00:27:32.854
Because I use all my body parts.
00:27:33.188 --> 00:27:35.857
People know when I'm dancing
00:27:36.032 --> 00:27:38.387
because I'm hurt
or when I'm happy,
00:27:38.411 --> 00:27:40.078
my friends all know that.
00:27:40.103 --> 00:27:41.528
When I'm dancing
when I'm hurt,
00:27:41.552 --> 00:27:43.990
I always turn my
face to the wall.
00:27:44.157 --> 00:27:46.311
I don't want to see anyone
00:27:46.336 --> 00:27:49.604
and no one comes close.
It's my moment with myself.
00:27:57.713 --> 00:28:00.841
Since she got out of jail,
my sister has not been herself.
00:28:01.007 --> 00:28:02.676
I know her.
00:28:03.760 --> 00:28:05.266
Sara was fearless,
00:28:05.290 --> 00:28:08.181
she knew exactly
what she wanted.
00:28:08.348 --> 00:28:11.226
I feel like it's
making her nervous,
00:28:11.457 --> 00:28:13.812
like she's afraid
of starting something new
00:28:13.836 --> 00:28:15.378
because of the case.
00:28:16.064 --> 00:28:19.025
OLYMPIC CENTRE
HAMBURG/SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN
00:28:25.198 --> 00:28:26.375
Since we were young,
00:28:26.399 --> 00:28:28.285
I would say
I was very competitive.
00:28:28.452 --> 00:28:30.996
And I still am, to be honest.
00:28:31.288 --> 00:28:33.569
Kind of my dad
created this competition
00:28:33.593 --> 00:28:35.417
between me and Sara.
00:28:50.557 --> 00:28:52.841
I started swimming
at the age of five
00:28:52.865 --> 00:28:55.604
because my father
was a swimming coach.
00:28:56.396 --> 00:28:58.732
I grew up in the water.
00:30:08.969 --> 00:30:10.988
The first crack that
happened between us
00:30:11.012 --> 00:30:13.348
was when Yusra
went to the Olympics.
00:30:13.515 --> 00:30:16.393
I was jealous
and wasn't really there for her.
00:30:22.524 --> 00:30:24.401
This is a historic moment:
00:30:24.818 --> 00:30:26.611
I can announce to you
00:30:26.778 --> 00:30:31.074
the members of the first ever
refugee Olympic team.
00:30:39.171 --> 00:30:41.572
Mardini of the
refugee Olympic team.
00:30:41.596 --> 00:30:44.575
The young lady in
lane 4: Yusra Mardini.
00:30:44.880 --> 00:30:47.632
She came across from Syria
as a refugee.
00:30:56.816 --> 00:30:58.638
This lady has come a long way.
00:30:58.662 --> 00:31:02.041
And in lane 4,
Mardini has taken it.
00:31:09.696 --> 00:31:11.506
From that boat
journey to Europe,
00:31:11.530 --> 00:31:14.659
my whole spine was dislocated.
00:31:14.849 --> 00:31:16.281
And then I couldn't
swim anymore.
00:31:16.305 --> 00:31:17.816
I didn't know what to do.
00:31:17.841 --> 00:31:19.801
That was the only thing I knew.
00:31:32.969 --> 00:31:34.324
Yusra Mardini
00:31:34.348 --> 00:31:37.253
is UNHCR's youngest
goodwill ambassador
00:31:37.278 --> 00:31:39.572
the organisation has had
in its long history.
00:31:39.851 --> 00:31:42.354
Yusra,
we could not be prouder of you.
00:31:42.687 --> 00:31:46.775
For your courage
and your resilience.
00:31:46.942 --> 00:31:51.976
The great example that you're
setting for children everywhere.
00:31:54.366 --> 00:31:56.868
I felt that I lost my identity.
00:31:57.035 --> 00:31:59.371
And that's why
I went back to Greece.
00:31:59.537 --> 00:32:03.291
To figure out myself again,
to be independent again.
00:32:07.003 --> 00:32:08.366
When she was in Lesbos,
00:32:08.390 --> 00:32:10.715
we realised that it makes her
happy the most,
00:32:10.740 --> 00:32:12.867
that this is her place.
00:32:18.974 --> 00:32:21.559
I don't think she ever felt
supported by me.
00:32:21.726 --> 00:32:24.479
She told me to visit a lot
and I never did.
00:32:24.653 --> 00:32:26.488
But also
00:32:26.512 --> 00:32:30.659
that period was
the busiest period of my life.
00:33:22.037 --> 00:33:24.956
I didn't hear this
for five years.
00:33:25.665 --> 00:33:27.375
The call for prayer.
00:33:31.720 --> 00:33:35.694
Me and my sister are
invited for an event called
00:33:35.719 --> 00:33:37.059
"What really matters".
00:33:37.802 --> 00:33:41.218
It's basically organised by
Princess Lara Faisal
00:33:41.243 --> 00:33:42.640
from Jordan.
00:33:42.807 --> 00:33:47.687
The talk is going to be in
Arabic and with my sister.
00:33:47.892 --> 00:33:49.513
Two things that I've
never done before.
00:33:49.537 --> 00:33:52.317
So I don't know
how it's gonna go.
00:33:54.105 --> 00:33:56.733
"Back to the Middle East, baby!"
00:34:00.200 --> 00:34:02.313
She has her way
and I have my way.
00:34:02.337 --> 00:34:03.703
She always says I'm angry.
00:34:03.870 --> 00:34:06.539
An angry person
fighting the fire.
00:34:06.706 --> 00:34:08.577
She's more chill
00:34:08.601 --> 00:34:12.170
and has a more beautiful,
flowery way of fighting.
00:34:13.088 --> 00:34:14.561
But actually I'm not angry.
00:34:14.585 --> 00:34:18.218
I'm just straightforward,
I hit directly.
00:34:23.431 --> 00:34:25.642
We are full.
Oh, sorry.
00:34:25.809 --> 00:34:29.187
I was trying to be Mommy
and clean.
00:34:30.772 --> 00:34:32.885
Okay, so I'm Fernando,
00:34:32.909 --> 00:34:35.568
I'm finishing my last
couple of words.
00:34:35.776 --> 00:34:38.319
Thank you very much,
blah, blah, blah.
00:34:38.343 --> 00:34:40.990
We love you, I love you. Salaam.
00:34:41.480 --> 00:34:44.427
They tried in the beginning
to say, "Yusra, your story!"
00:34:44.452 --> 00:34:46.300
But I was like:
"It's not my story only.
00:34:46.324 --> 00:34:48.790
My sister and other
people were involved.
00:34:48.957 --> 00:34:51.143
I did not pull the
boat the whole way.
00:34:51.167 --> 00:34:53.169
It's impossible for any swimmer.
00:34:53.336 --> 00:34:55.313
Ask any world champion."
00:34:55.338 --> 00:34:57.607
There was once a headline
00:34:57.631 --> 00:34:59.801
saying that you guys pulled
the boat from Syria?
00:34:59.968 --> 00:35:03.054
Yeah, also!
-From Syria to Greece.
00:35:03.221 --> 00:35:06.744
From Syria to Germany!
-To Germany!
00:35:06.933 --> 00:35:09.679
We always have to explain
00:35:09.703 --> 00:35:12.438
that refugees pay a lot
of money to get to Europe.
00:35:12.605 --> 00:35:15.108
We both paid 10,000 euros.
00:35:15.133 --> 00:35:17.004
To cross only from
Turkey to Greece?
00:35:17.028 --> 00:35:18.720
10,000 gives you what?
00:35:19.028 --> 00:35:21.865
Gives you the chance
to die or survive in the water.
00:35:22.042 --> 00:35:25.760
Sometimes when boats enter
international or Greek waters,
00:35:25.785 --> 00:35:27.620
out of nowhere, they disappear.
00:35:27.787 --> 00:35:31.166
The Greek or Turkish coastguard
is pushing them back.
00:35:31.366 --> 00:35:35.162
Sometimes also...
We heard when we were crossing
00:35:35.461 --> 00:35:37.574
that if you get to Greece
00:35:37.598 --> 00:35:39.841
and the boat is okay
with the engine,
00:35:40.008 --> 00:35:42.260
they send you back to Turkey.
00:35:42.427 --> 00:35:46.639
So when we arrived, we just
destroyed the boat with knives.
00:35:53.748 --> 00:35:56.617
Let's do it spontaneously then.
00:35:56.642 --> 00:35:59.140
I would start when
you were born.
00:35:59.201 --> 00:36:00.069
Exactly.
00:36:00.102 --> 00:36:02.989
"I was born in a family like
this... Then my sister came."
00:36:03.014 --> 00:36:06.724
Your dreams,
when you were a child.
00:36:06.826 --> 00:36:08.286
Got it.
00:36:08.578 --> 00:36:10.455
So, again.
00:36:11.956 --> 00:36:13.458
Light off...
00:36:13.625 --> 00:36:14.464
But first,
00:36:14.488 --> 00:36:18.338
let me take you back in time
to... I'm gonna kill myself.
00:36:22.386 --> 00:36:25.094
I know that, but I need
to concentrate. I can't.
00:36:25.261 --> 00:36:28.348
Tomorrow don't look at anyone.
-That's not the problem.
00:36:28.514 --> 00:36:34.285
It's the sounds around me.
Because if it's noisy, I panic.
00:36:35.021 --> 00:36:38.269
So now, light is off.
The light is on.
00:36:38.294 --> 00:36:42.111
I was born in 1995
in Damascus, Syria,
00:36:42.612 --> 00:36:45.780
into a family that instead
of blood,
00:36:45.804 --> 00:36:49.944
we had water
going through our veins.
00:36:50.367 --> 00:36:52.088
My father was a swimming coach
00:36:52.112 --> 00:36:53.704
and he taught all
of us swimming.
00:36:53.831 --> 00:36:57.335
And that's how we became
the swimming... swimmers family.
00:36:57.536 --> 00:36:59.680
I had only one dream as a child:
00:36:59.704 --> 00:37:02.207
to become an Olympic swimmer,
00:37:02.323 --> 00:37:03.899
get a gold medal
00:37:03.923 --> 00:37:07.143
and make everybody stand
up for my country's anthem.
00:37:08.095 --> 00:37:10.546
Then you talk about
the bombing in the pool.
00:37:10.570 --> 00:37:12.224
This is what happened.
00:37:12.642 --> 00:37:13.726
Yeah...
00:37:14.269 --> 00:37:16.771
You can say...
that's what I always do.
00:37:17.077 --> 00:37:21.498
I'm not telling you what to say.
I'm giving you an idea. Listen.
00:37:21.526 --> 00:37:23.639
You're 17 and you
had to pack
00:37:23.663 --> 00:37:26.155
your 17 years
of life in one backpack.
00:37:26.322 --> 00:37:28.448
But I don't want to
be told what to say.
00:37:28.472 --> 00:37:30.115
Do whatever you want.
00:38:26.549 --> 00:38:31.095
The blue colour of the water,
this is life itself for me.
00:38:31.288 --> 00:38:34.040
Just the blue colour
of the swimming pool.
00:38:36.642 --> 00:38:41.022
It's just like a breath of fresh
air when I see this colour.
00:38:41.189 --> 00:38:43.858
And you don't see it in the sea
or anywhere else.
00:38:44.233 --> 00:38:47.582
Even the taste of the water,
the feeling of the water,
00:38:48.071 --> 00:38:50.281
it's just life itself for me.
00:38:54.619 --> 00:38:58.081
It was my safe zone,
it was where I found myself,
00:38:58.247 --> 00:39:01.584
and where I settled down.
00:39:03.920 --> 00:39:05.922
It was like meditation.
00:39:08.800 --> 00:39:12.387
The feeling of being
in the water and competing
00:39:12.553 --> 00:39:14.722
is still in my veins till now.
00:39:28.194 --> 00:39:30.655
I'd be dead right now
if I wasn't a swimmer.
00:39:44.546 --> 00:39:46.297
Shall I do it like that?
00:39:51.426 --> 00:39:54.971
After swimming in
the Rio Olympics 2016,
00:39:55.138 --> 00:39:57.297
Yusra is training
to qualify again
00:39:57.321 --> 00:39:59.903
for the Olympic
Games in Tokyo 2020
00:40:00.435 --> 00:40:02.728
as part of the refugee
Olympic team.
00:40:06.800 --> 00:40:10.971
My lane was number 2 when
I won the bronze medal here.
00:40:11.404 --> 00:40:14.279
Here?
-Yeah, I was 14.
00:40:14.532 --> 00:40:17.243
I loved swimming
and I was really hard-working.
00:40:17.410 --> 00:40:21.414
I always swam extra
than everyone else.
00:40:21.439 --> 00:40:22.367
Longer.
00:40:22.392 --> 00:40:25.599
Because of my
fucking hyper body.
00:40:25.623 --> 00:40:26.992
I think back then
we didn't know.
00:40:27.086 --> 00:40:30.339
You already had ADHD.
-Yeah, I was so young.
00:40:31.549 --> 00:40:34.135
So what is best?
Butterfly or this...
00:40:34.302 --> 00:40:35.636
Freestyle?
-Freestyle.
00:40:35.803 --> 00:40:39.015
There's no best.
They're all different things.
00:40:40.016 --> 00:40:42.654
And they say that
you're a good swimmer,
00:40:42.678 --> 00:40:44.854
the less water you
have around you.
00:40:45.021 --> 00:40:47.690
You see the flying water
from the movement?
00:40:48.107 --> 00:40:52.737
The best technique is the
less amount of water splashing.
00:40:57.450 --> 00:41:00.244
I wish we had this in Europe.
So beautiful.
00:41:18.888 --> 00:41:22.683
Being so close to Syria reminds
me of what I left behind.
00:41:23.695 --> 00:41:25.947
I block my feelings
for survival.
00:42:09.522 --> 00:42:10.721
In the last part she
says,
00:42:10.745 --> 00:42:13.276
"Damascus,
you're my daughter, my mother.
00:42:13.609 --> 00:42:16.612
You hold my...
00:42:17.113 --> 00:42:19.824
"sibaja", I don't know
how to say "sibaja".
00:42:20.533 --> 00:42:24.328
You know, when you're a youth,
we say "sabihe".
00:42:24.495 --> 00:42:25.997
"My youth".
00:42:26.022 --> 00:42:29.692
"You hold my youth.
Would I grow up inside you?"
00:42:31.502 --> 00:42:33.588
And then at the end, they say,
00:42:34.797 --> 00:42:39.594
"I wish my wedding dress
and my grave
00:42:39.760 --> 00:42:42.430
were in your jasmine blossoms."
00:42:42.597 --> 00:42:46.434
So it's a really, really
strong song about Damascus.
00:42:47.226 --> 00:42:48.769
One of the most beautiful.
00:42:49.103 --> 00:42:51.105
You want it here?
-Yeah.
00:42:53.024 --> 00:42:56.152
And what about you?
-Same, because it needs to fit.
00:42:56.319 --> 00:42:58.654
It needs to connect.
-On this side?
00:43:01.449 --> 00:43:03.760
My eye is going to
connect with yours
00:43:03.784 --> 00:43:05.536
and then we have
the circle all over us.
00:43:05.703 --> 00:43:07.538
But then we have to...
00:43:08.268 --> 00:43:11.313
It'll be a little bit tricky.
But if you take it from up here.
00:43:11.667 --> 00:43:15.046
And then our eyes are like this.
This is an eye.
00:43:15.212 --> 00:43:17.255
And then the
circle is like this.
00:43:17.279 --> 00:43:18.049
Okay.
00:43:18.522 --> 00:43:20.165
I really love it!
00:44:04.720 --> 00:44:07.723
Come on, let's smoke. Done?
-Done.
00:44:08.224 --> 00:44:10.938
Let's walk away both.
That's nice for the camera.
00:44:10.963 --> 00:44:12.590
One, two, three.
00:44:59.483 --> 00:45:00.943
Me too.
00:45:02.445 --> 00:45:04.530
You're gonna learn something.
00:47:48.712 --> 00:47:50.464
When I get back from Jordan,
00:47:50.488 --> 00:47:53.300
I'm diagnosed with
PTSD and depression.
00:47:53.949 --> 00:47:57.745
When my therapist told me I have
depression, I laughed so hard.
00:47:58.195 --> 00:47:59.668
I come from Syria.
00:47:59.723 --> 00:48:02.231
We don't talk about
these things there.
00:48:09.506 --> 00:48:13.177
I got a lot of flashbacks
the last couple of weeks.
00:48:13.552 --> 00:48:16.556
You don't know when it hits you,
it's just like "click"
00:48:16.581 --> 00:48:19.959
and then you feel like someone
just takes you back there.
00:48:24.855 --> 00:48:26.636
The jail where I was living,
00:48:26.660 --> 00:48:29.234
the emotions,
the stress that I had,
00:48:29.260 --> 00:48:31.304
thinking about things.
00:48:34.657 --> 00:48:37.952
I'm not good
with fear or emotions or stress.
00:48:38.118 --> 00:48:42.331
Whenever it hits me,
my whole body is shivering
00:48:42.356 --> 00:48:46.777
because the pain and exhaustion,
the mental exhaustion that I had
00:48:47.086 --> 00:48:49.171
it just hits me quick.
00:48:51.173 --> 00:48:53.717
I'm with you,
but my mind is not with you.
00:48:53.884 --> 00:48:56.595
I'm not in control of
my body right now.
00:49:03.088 --> 00:49:04.538
And then I was fighting it,
like:
00:49:04.562 --> 00:49:07.231
"Leave me alone,
leave me alone."
00:49:08.273 --> 00:49:09.605
Then I close my eyes:
00:49:09.629 --> 00:49:12.074
"This pain, these emotions,
these flashbacks,
00:49:12.099 --> 00:49:13.321
It's you, Sara.
00:49:13.345 --> 00:49:16.270
You just need to accept that
it's part of you right now."
00:49:21.537 --> 00:49:23.087
I don't want it
to be part of me,
00:49:23.112 --> 00:49:26.157
but actually it is part of me,
that's why it's coming out.
00:49:36.635 --> 00:49:40.014
And I just put my arms up.
00:49:43.851 --> 00:49:45.378
And it's just like
when you let go
00:49:45.402 --> 00:49:47.730
and you let
everything come in.
00:49:49.273 --> 00:49:52.234
Okay, you want to freak me out?
Let's do it.
00:50:32.149 --> 00:50:35.069
So what can people do to help?
00:50:36.111 --> 00:50:38.322
Both the case that you're in now
00:50:38.489 --> 00:50:42.117
and also the wider refugee
crisis that's happening?
00:50:42.443 --> 00:50:44.779
It's not about me alone as Sara.
00:50:45.329 --> 00:50:50.125
There is 150 cases like me
around the whole world.
00:50:50.459 --> 00:50:54.213
Number one: you can speak up
and the same way we are able
00:50:54.379 --> 00:50:57.633
to go in millions on the streets
for climate change,
00:50:57.800 --> 00:51:00.594
we can go in millions
for refugees' rights
00:51:01.220 --> 00:51:04.973
and we can go in millions
for criminalising humanitarians.
00:51:05.265 --> 00:51:07.476
You need to come out
of your comfort zone.
00:51:07.810 --> 00:51:11.313
You need your willing.
Will and do it.
00:51:11.480 --> 00:51:14.608
I'm so sorry to say that, but
there's no more time for hope.
00:51:14.775 --> 00:51:18.654
There's time for action.
We all should stand up and act.
00:51:18.821 --> 00:51:20.902
We've been hoping
for so many years
00:51:20.926 --> 00:51:23.409
and we need to act
right now, all of us.
00:51:25.828 --> 00:51:29.373
Your sister said about you that
no one can get you to stay quiet
00:51:29.540 --> 00:51:32.709
and I hope for all of our sake,
no one does.
00:52:31.977 --> 00:52:33.270
Sorry!
00:52:36.481 --> 00:52:39.109
Even though there are
no updates from Greece,
00:52:39.276 --> 00:52:41.653
the trial is costing
time and money.
00:52:42.821 --> 00:52:47.409
Our legal fees are adding up.
With a lot of help, we manage.
00:52:47.701 --> 00:52:50.621
But the legal bills
are just unbelievable.
00:53:03.091 --> 00:53:05.135
We have three shifts a day.
00:53:05.302 --> 00:53:08.138
The hardest one
is actually lunch.
00:53:08.163 --> 00:53:11.083
You need to work like a machine.
00:53:18.732 --> 00:53:21.276
There's a lot of loud noise,
you can scream.
00:53:21.443 --> 00:53:24.144
You can smash things.
00:53:27.491 --> 00:53:30.119
The fact that I work so fast
00:53:30.143 --> 00:53:32.541
brings me back to my
environment in Greece,
00:53:32.566 --> 00:53:35.652
which is emergency,
stress and pressure.
00:53:38.585 --> 00:53:40.956
At the same time,
I put out my energy
00:53:40.980 --> 00:53:43.423
during the day so
I can sleep at night.
00:54:36.977 --> 00:54:39.688
So you saw these posts
I put on Instagram?
00:54:40.230 --> 00:54:42.101
About mental health
and everything?
00:54:42.125 --> 00:54:43.525
Yeah, I saw that one.
00:54:43.859 --> 00:54:46.403
Everybody was texting me:
"I'll stand by you."
00:54:46.428 --> 00:54:47.480
I'm like: "Guys,
00:54:47.504 --> 00:54:50.098
I have friends and family
who are standing by me.
00:54:50.407 --> 00:54:52.200
I don't need more.
00:54:52.367 --> 00:54:55.037
You're actually
not fucking standing with us.
00:54:55.062 --> 00:54:57.647
It's me and Sean
worrying about the 40,000 euros.
00:54:57.956 --> 00:55:01.251
You just clap to us when we
speak a speech and that's it."
00:55:01.668 --> 00:55:04.046
Here, I feel like
I'm just giving
00:55:04.212 --> 00:55:06.882
and I'm not paid.
00:55:07.095 --> 00:55:11.671
And also its re-traumatising.
You think the more you talk...
00:55:11.696 --> 00:55:13.680
It's a lot of emotional labour.
-Yeah!
00:55:13.847 --> 00:55:17.100
And also you push it all down
all the time,
00:55:17.125 --> 00:55:20.045
but then it comes
out in other things.
00:55:20.812 --> 00:55:25.525
My activism work is not based
on how many stages I stand on.
00:55:29.571 --> 00:55:32.407
I'm pissing off a lot of people,
but where were they
00:55:32.574 --> 00:55:35.577
when we were fundraising
40,000 euros for our case?
00:55:40.699 --> 00:55:44.912
Now I'm asking myself: How
do all my friends deal with me?
00:55:45.212 --> 00:55:47.172
I'm so intense!
00:55:47.839 --> 00:55:50.634
Glad you start to...
Just joking.
00:55:50.659 --> 00:55:53.537
No, seriously.
I was saying to myself,
00:55:53.561 --> 00:55:55.872
"What the fuck? Chill, girl!"
00:55:58.934 --> 00:56:02.020
But that's what we love you for.
-My intensivity?
00:56:02.187 --> 00:56:03.647
Of course.
-Wow!
00:56:03.814 --> 00:56:07.984
The whole Mardini package.
-That's a statement.
00:56:09.694 --> 00:56:13.365
Now I understand why my mom
struggles to deal with me.
00:56:14.334 --> 00:56:17.584
But I have such a good
relationship with Yusra now.
00:56:17.609 --> 00:56:18.284
Yeah?
00:56:18.308 --> 00:56:20.914
My mom, too. We're all
doing therapy with Ali.
00:56:21.081 --> 00:56:23.083
So everybody's opening up.
00:56:23.250 --> 00:56:24.835
That's beautiful.
-Yeah.
00:56:25.168 --> 00:56:27.379
Do talk with her
about future plans?
00:56:27.712 --> 00:56:30.090
No.
-It's a different matter?
00:56:30.257 --> 00:56:32.884
No,
but I don't have future plans.
00:56:50.235 --> 00:56:53.822
How was it to deal with
when the Olympics got postponed?
00:56:54.156 --> 00:56:57.451
Okay, one fact straight: we
cannot change anything about it.
00:56:57.784 --> 00:57:01.310
Also, we should all think about
refugees at the moment
00:57:01.335 --> 00:57:06.002
because they don't have access
to what we have access to.
00:57:49.419 --> 00:57:52.380
The hearing was supposed
to take place in September.
00:57:52.881 --> 00:57:54.549
Due to Covid,
00:57:54.716 --> 00:57:58.508
the courts are closed and
not operating for these cases.
00:57:58.929 --> 00:58:01.865
So we are waiting for the courts
to operate again
00:58:01.890 --> 00:58:05.393
to take a new date
for this kind of procedure.
00:58:29.709 --> 00:58:32.504
Oh yeah,
I'm trying to change everything.
00:58:32.671 --> 00:58:34.858
My therapist said
I'm in a midlife crisis,
00:58:34.883 --> 00:58:37.619
but in my twenties.
Earlier.
00:58:37.759 --> 00:58:40.600
I got enrolled into politics
and everything
00:58:40.625 --> 00:58:42.090
because when we
arrived here,
00:58:42.114 --> 00:58:45.367
we just got channelled
and we went with it.
00:58:45.392 --> 00:58:47.936
We technically
went with the flow.
00:58:47.961 --> 00:58:51.715
But then now I'm realising, I
think because I started therapy,
00:58:52.190 --> 00:58:54.420
that I never actually
thought about my decisions
00:58:54.444 --> 00:58:57.053
and just follow my heart.
00:59:00.949 --> 00:59:02.725
But now I do.
00:59:02.826 --> 00:59:05.181
I don't want to do
another day doing things
00:59:05.205 --> 00:59:07.080
I'm not motivated to do.
00:59:08.123 --> 00:59:10.709
I don't want to even
write another essay
00:59:10.875 --> 00:59:13.236
for a subject
that I'm not interested in.
00:59:15.797 --> 00:59:17.152
I stayed in that school
00:59:17.176 --> 00:59:19.884
because I enjoyed the
comfort zone of that money.
00:59:20.100 --> 00:59:23.242
But then at the end, I felt like
this was taking a toll on me
00:59:23.267 --> 00:59:25.586
and my brain and my time.
00:59:25.724 --> 00:59:28.310
And then I decided
to just leave.
00:59:30.270 --> 00:59:32.508
I think if I would
own all this place,
00:59:32.533 --> 00:59:35.036
I'd make all my friends'
dreams come true.
00:59:35.817 --> 00:59:37.527
And mine too.
00:59:39.070 --> 00:59:41.448
We can make it
a temporary emergency camp.
00:59:42.198 --> 00:59:44.689
For people in
emergency situations.
00:59:44.713 --> 00:59:46.911
Or a mental health camp.
00:59:47.537 --> 00:59:49.414
Because it's in nature.
00:59:49.706 --> 00:59:52.876
So people can come here
and just chill.
00:59:53.752 --> 00:59:56.004
It's pretty damaged, though.
01:00:22.238 --> 01:00:24.282
The fire was sparked overnight.
01:00:24.449 --> 01:00:27.118
Several shacks went up in flames
around the camp
01:00:27.285 --> 01:00:30.080
before the entire
compound began to burn.
01:00:39.506 --> 01:00:44.260
Moria is basically Europe's
largest and worst refugee camp.
01:00:53.728 --> 01:00:56.064
That's where the food
lines were. Up here.
01:01:01.528 --> 01:01:05.782
I didn't talk to anyone about it
for the whole week.
01:01:07.200 --> 01:01:08.844
I just kept on sharing,
01:01:08.868 --> 01:01:11.838
but I blocked all the
communication with everybody.
01:01:11.863 --> 01:01:14.532
Because I wasn't able
to put it into words.
01:01:14.999 --> 01:01:19.087
I didn't want to put it into
words. No words can describe it.
01:01:20.213 --> 01:01:22.340
It looks exactly like...
01:01:23.216 --> 01:01:26.678
back home
when everything was destroyed.
01:01:33.768 --> 01:01:36.688
And I just felt, my
two homes on fire.
01:01:36.855 --> 01:01:40.567
Greece is my second home
before Berlin after Syria.
01:01:40.734 --> 01:01:43.194
So I felt pretty hopeless.
01:01:43.987 --> 01:01:46.489
Especially also that
I could not be there.
01:01:46.656 --> 01:01:50.326
If I could just fly there,
I would be there already.
01:01:50.493 --> 01:01:52.495
I would not skip a heartbeat.
01:02:08.907 --> 01:02:12.119
I was released
exactly almost two years ago.
01:02:13.516 --> 01:02:15.602
I was released in
December, actually.
01:02:15.769 --> 01:02:19.439
Two years ago I was
still in prison. And...
01:02:19.773 --> 01:02:22.484
We are still criminals
01:02:22.650 --> 01:02:26.571
and we are still waiting
for our court date to happen,
01:02:27.197 --> 01:02:29.866
hopefully one day.
01:02:30.257 --> 01:02:31.487
The last couple of months,
01:02:31.511 --> 01:02:35.371
we all know what happened
in Moria and the fire.
01:02:35.955 --> 01:02:39.271
We were all against
rebuilding Moria
01:02:39.295 --> 01:02:41.544
and they've rebuilt even worse.
01:02:41.878 --> 01:02:45.398
We demonstrated and talked
about it for a couple of days.
01:02:45.423 --> 01:02:48.468
But now we forgot again.
01:02:48.802 --> 01:02:51.179
What has been
happening around us?
01:02:52.388 --> 01:02:55.642
Do we actually see anyone
doing something about it?
01:02:55.975 --> 01:03:00.063
Are we doing something about it,
apart from here and protesting?
01:03:00.230 --> 01:03:02.524
Or we just keep it
normal, normalise it,
01:03:02.549 --> 01:03:05.635
everything is cool
and we go back to normal?
01:03:18.039 --> 01:03:21.918
I have very good news. Sea-Watch
contacted me this morning.
01:03:21.978 --> 01:03:24.605
They want me to
join the next mission.
01:03:25.922 --> 01:03:27.382
Where?
01:03:27.549 --> 01:03:31.188
I didn't read the e-mail yet
because I was coming here.
01:03:31.261 --> 01:03:32.521
But it's made me a bit, like:
01:03:32.545 --> 01:03:34.848
"Oh, fuck. I'm
back on the move."
01:03:35.014 --> 01:03:37.850
If I do this,
I'm out of here again.
01:03:54.075 --> 01:03:55.577
Yeah, I look so...
01:03:56.160 --> 01:03:58.090
not me, but in a good way.
01:03:59.497 --> 01:04:01.374
Now it's her turn!
01:04:03.459 --> 01:04:04.878
Sara?
01:04:05.378 --> 01:04:08.214
Can you give me your phone?
It's time for my music.
01:04:10.717 --> 01:04:14.512
In the party, if someone cut the
set and played something else,
01:04:15.513 --> 01:04:18.600
the Satan comes
down in my brain.
01:04:19.183 --> 01:04:20.560
Why am I talking to you?
01:04:20.727 --> 01:04:23.605
Go look at the... No, don't
look at the outfits, actually.
01:04:23.938 --> 01:04:25.020
Of course, if you ask me
01:04:25.044 --> 01:04:27.641
what's going on with
your case in Mytilini,
01:04:27.752 --> 01:04:33.188
I would have to notify you that
we're still in the same spot.
01:04:33.406 --> 01:04:38.199
Yeah, I'm aware, I think. I'm
aware that nothing's changing.
01:04:38.411 --> 01:04:43.333
And I'm joining Sea-Watch
in a couple of days, in Italy.
01:04:44.542 --> 01:04:45.905
You know about the problems
01:04:45.929 --> 01:04:48.004
that we have with
Sea-Watch in Greece?
01:04:48.546 --> 01:04:49.589
Really?
01:04:49.784 --> 01:04:54.052
There is an enormous case
with German NGOs.
01:04:54.218 --> 01:04:57.430
They are facing
an identical case like yours.
01:04:57.663 --> 01:04:59.698
I like how he's smiling
when he says it.
01:04:59.722 --> 01:05:02.727
He's like: "My God,
she's going there."
01:05:02.894 --> 01:05:06.064
Stay away from search
and rescue operations.
01:05:06.238 --> 01:05:07.883
Yeah, I promise.
01:05:07.907 --> 01:05:09.918
What are you going
to do exactly there?
01:05:09.943 --> 01:05:14.030
I don't do a search and rescue.
I don't go on small boats.
01:05:14.055 --> 01:05:17.691
I just distribute
food and clothes
01:05:17.715 --> 01:05:19.677
and water and
these types of things.
01:05:19.702 --> 01:05:21.941
I'm happy that you're
again on the field.
01:05:21.965 --> 01:05:23.331
Thank you.
01:05:23.498 --> 01:05:25.875
Because for me it's...
01:05:26.049 --> 01:05:29.136
It would be a huge
win for those people
01:05:29.161 --> 01:05:33.582
that wanted to put you out
of this humanitarian role.
01:05:33.883 --> 01:05:37.845
For me, having this case in
Greece should not be something
01:05:38.012 --> 01:05:39.512
that can keep you away
01:05:39.537 --> 01:05:42.241
from what you feel and
what you dream for yourself.
01:05:43.559 --> 01:05:47.605
Yeah. I tried to do so
many other things. I couldn't.
01:05:47.772 --> 01:05:51.315
I had depression because
I couldn't do anything else.
01:05:51.339 --> 01:05:52.819
It's just where I belong.
01:06:08.209 --> 01:06:11.421
You're taking so much space!
-One more time!
01:06:11.587 --> 01:06:13.673
Okay, go. One, two, three.
01:06:16.634 --> 01:06:19.887
Amazing.
-You're cheering up.
01:06:19.994 --> 01:06:22.871
Wait, wait. Come back,
come back. Come to me.
01:06:22.896 --> 01:06:25.065
Come stand here.
And see this.
01:06:25.601 --> 01:06:28.146
From here.
You see her corner.
01:06:30.997 --> 01:06:34.501
Vogue Arabia, after they see
this, they're gonna do a cover.
01:06:34.777 --> 01:06:37.613
Yeah.
-You go behind her. Behind her.
01:06:38.031 --> 01:06:40.450
Lean on me.
-Yes.
01:06:42.368 --> 01:06:45.788
Wait, wait. Hold on. Let me
stabilise and now lean on me.
01:06:48.995 --> 01:06:52.290
I'm freaking out here!
-You're heavy, sister!
01:06:54.630 --> 01:06:56.243
We're creating
our own narratives,
01:06:56.267 --> 01:06:58.718
we're creating our
own boundaries.
01:07:00.136 --> 01:07:01.686
So I did break
out of it.
01:07:01.710 --> 01:07:04.140
I think that was
part of the healing.
01:07:05.600 --> 01:07:07.736
I wanted to create a
whole different path
01:07:07.760 --> 01:07:10.855
that is completely
far from what she do.
01:07:14.400 --> 01:07:17.945
I don't want to be her shadow
and I don't want her to be mine.
01:07:18.112 --> 01:07:20.990
We don't believe in shadows,
both of us.
01:07:23.493 --> 01:07:25.862
Instead of having
this narrow road,
01:07:25.887 --> 01:07:28.723
I want to experience
and learn so many things.
01:07:32.710 --> 01:07:33.854
It's like music
01:07:33.879 --> 01:07:36.011
when sometimes
the beat is so nice
01:07:36.035 --> 01:07:37.841
that you jump from your place.
01:07:39.258 --> 01:07:40.883
For me, I want
every single moment
01:07:40.908 --> 01:07:43.227
in my life to be like this.
01:08:06.160 --> 01:08:08.955
For the first day,
I will not be able to sleep.
01:08:09.288 --> 01:08:10.503
I always get scared
01:08:10.527 --> 01:08:13.459
when I'm going to
experience something new.
01:08:13.835 --> 01:08:16.712
And then when I do it, I relax.
01:09:19.942 --> 01:09:21.891
The five-year migration crisis,
01:09:21.915 --> 01:09:24.480
especially in the
Mediterranean and Atlantic
01:09:24.530 --> 01:09:29.035
continues unabated, with
drowning deaths now on the rise.
01:09:30.870 --> 01:09:34.749
It seems masked men often attack
migrant boats on the open seas,
01:09:35.041 --> 01:09:38.753
damaging them so they can't be
steered and leaving them adrift.
01:09:38.778 --> 01:09:40.961
Sometimes they even
actively force the boats
01:09:40.985 --> 01:09:42.907
back into Turkish waters,
01:09:42.932 --> 01:09:45.184
a tactic known as pushback.
01:10:25.549 --> 01:10:28.970
My name is Sara Mardini.
Solidarity is not a crime.
01:10:36.018 --> 01:10:39.385
That's the bow.
That was my area.
01:10:40.606 --> 01:10:44.908
I gave them a lot of emergency
blankets and wrapped them.
01:10:53.995 --> 01:10:56.956
I was happy there.
It was really nice.
01:11:05.214 --> 01:11:07.174
So we were just talking.
01:11:07.341 --> 01:11:10.219
They love having conversations
and we'd just sit there.
01:11:10.386 --> 01:11:13.347
I'd be talking to one
and then they'd all come closer
01:11:13.372 --> 01:11:15.833
and then it's like
a big circle of people.
01:11:20.271 --> 01:11:22.064
Libyan coastguard.
01:11:26.235 --> 01:11:27.528
Yeah.
01:11:27.820 --> 01:11:30.197
There was a
fucking horrible day.
01:11:30.489 --> 01:11:33.551
Because we couldn't bring them.
They took them on board.
01:11:33.576 --> 01:11:37.079
But we witnessed everything.
We saw them hitting them...
01:11:37.413 --> 01:11:39.999
That was so bad, that day.
01:11:44.086 --> 01:11:48.462
This one, we could risk drowning
ourselves if we rescue them.
01:11:48.487 --> 01:11:51.917
Because of capacity.
For the safety of the ship.
01:11:52.178 --> 01:11:56.265
And then the head of mission
and the head of engineers
01:11:56.432 --> 01:11:58.642
decided that we can take them.
01:12:02.104 --> 01:12:06.275
You see how they cheer up, in
one moment that someone, like...
01:12:07.193 --> 01:12:10.166
Life changes from death to life.
01:12:12.406 --> 01:12:15.951
Yes, it's just tough.
And they're alive now.
01:12:16.285 --> 01:12:18.162
It's something that...
01:12:18.454 --> 01:12:22.041
That's why I'm like...
Who are other humans to...
01:12:22.333 --> 01:12:23.459
Yeah.
01:12:24.001 --> 01:12:25.961
I cannot speak about it.
01:12:26.420 --> 01:12:29.548
I don't understand. Why would
anyone do that to anyone?
01:12:41.852 --> 01:12:44.939
What the fuck is
going on in the world?
01:12:45.481 --> 01:12:48.776
Who are you to decide
I can leave that person to drown
01:12:48.943 --> 01:12:51.529
and see the Libyan coastguard
hitting them?
01:12:51.695 --> 01:12:54.615
To say to me, "No, you're
not allowed to interfere"?
01:12:55.491 --> 01:12:57.993
Who are you to give
me laws to follow
01:12:58.017 --> 01:13:00.454
when you yourself
are not following it?
01:13:02.123 --> 01:13:03.999
Who are you?
01:13:10.548 --> 01:13:13.092
This is me standing in
front of the whole world:
01:13:13.250 --> 01:13:15.225
I do not support what's going on
01:13:15.258 --> 01:13:17.054
and I'm not going
to be part of it.
01:13:18.972 --> 01:13:21.835
I have a message I
completely believe in
01:13:21.860 --> 01:13:23.310
and I'm going
to fight for it.
01:13:42.246 --> 01:13:45.040
After being in jail
because of volunteering,
01:13:45.207 --> 01:13:48.561
she volunteered with Sea-Watch,
helping lives again.
01:13:48.586 --> 01:13:51.255
To be honest, this is
very brave. I told her:
01:13:51.280 --> 01:13:54.684
I could never go to
the middle of the sea again
01:13:54.724 --> 01:13:56.827
and be on a
ship and rescue people.
01:13:56.852 --> 01:13:59.146
I don't know how I would feel.
01:14:02.766 --> 01:14:04.743
I would love her to know
01:14:04.768 --> 01:14:08.063
that because she was crazy
and she was so different,
01:14:08.088 --> 01:14:10.716
I learned a lot from her.
01:14:11.015 --> 01:14:13.623
I learned to say no
and I learned to say:
01:14:13.648 --> 01:14:14.837
"I do not like this."
01:14:14.862 --> 01:14:18.115
And I learned to say:
"I can be better than you
01:14:18.282 --> 01:14:20.576
even if you think I'm not."
01:14:41.847 --> 01:14:46.003
Yusra Mardini,
she's in lane number 3.
01:14:49.647 --> 01:14:52.775
We're into the water for the
100-metres butterfly for women
01:14:52.942 --> 01:14:55.486
at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
01:15:09.672 --> 01:15:13.884
We were put in prison
because we decided to save lives
01:15:14.338 --> 01:15:19.301
when the governments of Europe
and the world failed to do so.
01:15:20.052 --> 01:15:23.681
But guess what?
We will not stop.
01:15:26.517 --> 01:15:30.312
Because saving a human life
from drowning in the sea
01:15:30.479 --> 01:15:33.607
can never, ever,
ever be a crime.
01:15:34.233 --> 01:15:35.359
Thank you.
01:16:02.196 --> 01:16:04.196
Hello.
01:16:07.099 --> 01:16:11.312
That's the first letter
that Sean sent to me in prison.
01:16:12.354 --> 01:16:14.231
So basically, he says:
01:16:14.565 --> 01:16:16.442
"Dear Mardini...
01:16:17.484 --> 01:16:19.644
I'm selfish because
I'm happy..."
01:16:19.668 --> 01:16:21.697
His handwriting is so hard.
01:16:21.864 --> 01:16:26.201
"I'm selfish because I'm happy
we are in here together.
01:16:28.829 --> 01:16:31.874
Who thought what
will happen tomorrow?
01:16:32.041 --> 01:16:36.545
But I believe
tomorrow is a start..."
01:16:40.007 --> 01:16:43.385
His handwriting!
It's just... not for me.
01:16:53.687 --> 01:16:56.190
I got a phone call from Sean.
01:16:56.357 --> 01:17:00.152
And he was telling me
that the trial date is up.
01:17:00.319 --> 01:17:02.307
And then you're
in this situation,
01:17:02.331 --> 01:17:05.157
you're like: "What is going on?"
01:17:07.701 --> 01:17:10.068
You're being prosecuted,
you have a trial date
01:17:10.093 --> 01:17:12.679
and didn't even
receive official paperwork.
01:17:21.090 --> 01:17:22.132
It wasn't easy at all.
01:17:22.156 --> 01:17:27.154
I just woke up and I heard what
Sean was saying.
01:17:27.179 --> 01:17:28.815
And the first thing... I cried:
01:17:28.839 --> 01:17:31.225
"I don't want to go
back to prison."
01:17:31.392 --> 01:17:33.644
I just do not want
to go back there.
01:17:44.738 --> 01:17:47.991
My brain is like: "It's
going to take another year,
01:17:48.158 --> 01:17:50.703
you're going to get
into more depressive modes.
01:17:50.869 --> 01:17:54.289
You're gonna be very sad,
you're gonna hate yourself."
01:17:56.250 --> 01:17:58.099
And this is me, by myself,
01:17:58.123 --> 01:18:00.838
struggling with every
single day right now.
01:18:08.053 --> 01:18:09.322
My body is, like:
01:18:09.346 --> 01:18:12.641
"One last fight! We did it
before. We can do it again."
01:18:28.741 --> 01:18:32.703
Yeah, yeah. I'm not backing off.
Not now, not ever.
01:18:32.995 --> 01:18:35.622
I'm done, one last battle.
01:18:36.290 --> 01:18:37.457
I'm battling my body,
01:18:37.481 --> 01:18:40.669
I'm battling my whole
life for this right now.
01:18:41.712 --> 01:18:45.299
Actually, I got out of my bed
just this morning.
01:18:45.466 --> 01:18:47.968
Four days and not able to walk.
01:18:49.011 --> 01:18:50.804
And I'm done.
01:18:58.812 --> 01:19:02.107
Well, you know my lawyers
know me very well, so...
01:19:02.132 --> 01:19:03.667
I don't know why
I'm stressed today.
01:19:03.691 --> 01:19:06.553
I've never been
stressed with them.
01:19:07.905 --> 01:19:10.339
Maybe because
I have so much energy
01:19:10.363 --> 01:19:11.691
I don't know what to do with.
01:19:11.950 --> 01:19:15.746
Happy to see all of you.
-I can't hear you.
01:19:15.913 --> 01:19:18.499
Can you hear me now better?
-Repeat the question.
01:19:19.166 --> 01:19:23.295
What is the positive
and negative aspect for us?
01:19:23.670 --> 01:19:27.341
Yeah, what will change,
basically?
01:19:28.175 --> 01:19:32.596
We have a prosecutor
who decided to indict us
01:19:32.763 --> 01:19:36.642
without taking notice of
the irregularities in that case.
01:19:36.809 --> 01:19:40.395
For sure, we'll have
to present any progress
01:19:40.554 --> 01:19:43.596
as one of the most
intense examples
01:19:43.629 --> 01:19:46.210
of the judicial harassment
01:19:46.235 --> 01:19:47.903
by the local authorities.
01:19:48.403 --> 01:19:51.399
We feel that we have
a good opportunity
01:19:51.423 --> 01:19:54.159
here to make this a wider issue.
01:19:54.493 --> 01:19:57.454
I presume that we want
to speak more than just about
01:19:57.621 --> 01:20:00.541
"Sean and Sara
should not go back to jail"
01:20:00.707 --> 01:20:03.460
because that
doesn't resonate very widely.
01:20:03.627 --> 01:20:06.709
We can frame this as an attack
on civil society at large.
01:20:06.733 --> 01:20:07.648
Sorry, Sara.
01:20:07.673 --> 01:20:09.424
I completely agree.
01:20:09.591 --> 01:20:11.771
What we were waiting for
01:20:11.795 --> 01:20:14.012
the past three years is to
have a court date.
01:20:14.513 --> 01:20:16.485
I want somehow to
pressure them
01:20:16.509 --> 01:20:20.202
because it needs to
be out in the public.
01:20:20.227 --> 01:20:22.437
I will interrupt you
to say goodbye.
01:20:22.604 --> 01:20:24.606
Back to work!
-Bye!
01:20:24.773 --> 01:20:26.692
See you.
-Take care.
01:20:26.859 --> 01:20:29.903
Bye, everybody.
-Bye bye.
01:20:30.070 --> 01:20:31.864
Big hugs!
01:20:32.030 --> 01:20:33.490
Kisses!
01:20:33.907 --> 01:20:37.035
Sean, do you want to stay a bit?
-Yeah.
01:20:37.060 --> 01:20:38.151
I'm so stressed,
01:20:38.175 --> 01:20:42.082
I'm trying to be normal,
as much as possible.
01:20:42.595 --> 01:20:46.411
For me, it was wild as well
because I was so used to limbo.
01:20:46.837 --> 01:20:49.559
And I didn't realise
how comfortable
01:20:49.583 --> 01:20:52.901
I had become with being in limbo
01:20:52.926 --> 01:20:54.805
and knowing that
it's not going ahead
01:20:54.830 --> 01:20:58.156
and suddenly there's
going to be a trial.
01:20:58.181 --> 01:21:01.351
You should start smoking,
that will help de-stress.
01:21:03.228 --> 01:21:04.654
That's not happening,
01:21:04.678 --> 01:21:06.607
I'm not even drinking
coffee at the moment.
01:21:06.773 --> 01:21:11.320
I am on the... I just got
my white belt in kickboxing.
01:21:11.486 --> 01:21:15.002
I'm trying to get
ready for prison.
01:21:15.027 --> 01:21:15.800
Nice!
01:21:15.824 --> 01:21:17.367
Don't joke about it!
01:21:17.392 --> 01:21:18.949
We're not fucking
going to prison.
01:21:18.973 --> 01:21:20.971
We're not going to prison.
01:21:20.996 --> 01:21:23.254
We're not going to prison.
01:21:24.708 --> 01:21:26.293
Woah, man.
01:21:26.627 --> 01:21:30.297
I have the power of a fucking
thousand people in my body.
01:21:43.185 --> 01:21:45.062
Okay, voilą.
01:21:45.520 --> 01:21:47.571
I'm not going to make
my feelings take over me,
01:21:47.595 --> 01:21:49.232
not right now.
01:22:41.368 --> 01:22:44.360
The Greek authorities
kept me in prison
01:22:44.385 --> 01:22:47.462
because they were afraid
I'd escape my own trial.
01:22:48.208 --> 01:22:51.253
And now they won't even
let me back in the country
01:22:51.278 --> 01:22:55.323
because they believe I'm a
threat to the national security.
01:22:56.174 --> 01:23:00.846
There's 24 people in our case
and I'm being singled out.
01:23:08.603 --> 01:23:12.247
I'm not given my basic right to
defend myself in the courthouse.
01:23:14.700 --> 01:23:16.493
I go to Rome.
01:23:16.588 --> 01:23:19.674
I need to be alone
to get my energy back together
01:23:20.615 --> 01:23:22.908
to be able to
stand in solidarity
01:23:22.932 --> 01:23:25.029
with my friends in Greece.
01:23:35.589 --> 01:23:37.382
I feel like
01:23:37.841 --> 01:23:40.552
we've always been here
01:23:40.719 --> 01:23:42.095
since then.
01:23:43.013 --> 01:23:45.098
We haven't really left it.
01:23:45.265 --> 01:23:48.810
Greece has been on my mind every
single day for three years.
01:23:49.227 --> 01:23:51.104
I know it's been
on Sara's mind too.
01:23:57.194 --> 01:23:59.696
I mean, just being
completely honest:
01:24:00.322 --> 01:24:02.949
The media is
interested in Sara's story.
01:24:04.910 --> 01:24:06.995
It sounds so weird, but...
01:24:07.579 --> 01:24:10.005
In some ways I'm lucky
01:24:10.029 --> 01:24:12.102
that it was Sara who
was arrested with me,
01:24:12.127 --> 01:24:13.414
that we were arrested together
01:24:13.470 --> 01:24:16.695
because if it had been me alone,
for example,
01:24:17.266 --> 01:24:20.477
I don't think there'd be as
much interest from the media.
01:24:20.801 --> 01:24:23.247
And the media has
been hugely important
01:24:23.271 --> 01:24:25.097
for our release
from pre-trial prison
01:24:25.263 --> 01:24:28.350
and is hugely important for
public opinion now as well.
01:24:28.809 --> 01:24:31.728
As a friend, I wish that she
never was involved in this.
01:24:31.895 --> 01:24:33.980
But as a co-defendant...
01:24:34.523 --> 01:24:38.485
I couldn't think of a better
"partner in crime", as it were.
01:24:38.826 --> 01:24:40.119
Hey!
01:24:40.374 --> 01:24:41.394
How are you doing?
01:24:41.418 --> 01:24:43.532
I'm good. I just landed in Rome.
01:24:43.698 --> 01:24:46.535
You guys do the trial,
I'm on holiday for ten days.
01:25:19.901 --> 01:25:22.821
I'm scared of the process
of the whole thing.
01:25:22.990 --> 01:25:27.495
I'm just worried that some
stupid decisions will happen
01:25:27.826 --> 01:25:32.053
and make us again... We don't
really have much energy left.
01:25:32.164 --> 01:25:35.800
And we're wasting everything
we have now for this case:
01:25:35.824 --> 01:25:37.878
money, time and energy.
01:25:38.211 --> 01:25:40.589
So let's see
what's going to happen.
01:25:49.806 --> 01:25:51.683
What do I expect?
01:25:52.976 --> 01:25:55.487
This prosecution has
done a very poor job
01:25:55.511 --> 01:25:57.314
of sending an indictment.
01:25:57.772 --> 01:26:00.650
It doesn't name people,
it numbers people,
01:26:00.817 --> 01:26:02.903
so people don't
know the charges.
01:26:03.069 --> 01:26:06.081
It's clearly a violation
of their right to a fair trial.
01:26:07.991 --> 01:26:10.202
What damage has
already been done?
01:26:10.368 --> 01:26:12.871
There is no more
search and rescue on Lesbos.
01:26:13.038 --> 01:26:14.998
It has frightened away everyone.
01:26:39.940 --> 01:26:42.359
Now the trial begins.
01:26:44.194 --> 01:26:48.448
We don't know what's going on.
The media is not allowed in.
01:26:53.578 --> 01:26:56.498
I'm not sure what
the outcome would be.
01:26:56.665 --> 01:26:59.209
That is the most
scary thing about it.
01:27:01.962 --> 01:27:04.506
You don't know what
they are capable of.
01:27:10.679 --> 01:27:14.641
So that's really the issue now,
they don't have an interpreter.
01:27:14.808 --> 01:27:17.477
That or they wanted
a 20-minute lunch break.
01:27:17.811 --> 01:27:19.896
It's just a matter
of waiting now.
01:27:20.063 --> 01:27:22.190
For them to find...?
01:27:22.357 --> 01:27:24.103
For them to realise that
01:27:24.127 --> 01:27:27.112
there's a need for English
interpretation.
01:27:32.575 --> 01:27:35.578
This is so stupid.
Oh God, this is so stupid.
01:27:40.125 --> 01:27:42.377
I really can't keep going
like this.
01:27:43.003 --> 01:27:45.338
Sean, they asked
me to translate.
01:27:45.362 --> 01:27:46.549
Are you happy with that?
01:27:46.798 --> 01:27:50.636
Zaccharias,
I don't know the words for...
01:27:50.661 --> 01:27:51.484
"Fuck you"?
01:27:51.508 --> 01:27:55.414
That also. And "judicial",
"counsel" and all that.
01:27:55.439 --> 01:27:58.275
We are not going
to need such detail.
01:28:00.687 --> 01:28:03.064
I don't know if this is smart.
01:28:05.233 --> 01:28:06.401
Come on!
01:28:12.407 --> 01:28:14.242
I hope they don't postpone it.
01:28:14.409 --> 01:28:17.662
I'm gonna be so angry
if they postpone it again.
01:28:53.773 --> 01:28:56.568
One of the 24 defendants,
he's a lawyer.
01:28:56.593 --> 01:28:59.292
According to Greek
legislation,
01:28:59.316 --> 01:29:01.473
a lawyer can be judged
only by a higher court.
01:29:01.498 --> 01:29:03.583
Okay, thank you, Zaccharias.
01:29:09.464 --> 01:29:11.424
The trial is postponed.
01:29:11.591 --> 01:29:14.094
They're making an
example out of us.
01:29:14.260 --> 01:29:17.722
We have to start all over again
with another court.
01:29:20.892 --> 01:29:22.852
Will it ever end?
01:29:23.186 --> 01:29:26.106
What we as search
and rescuers ask for
01:29:26.272 --> 01:29:30.235
is that the EU and Greece
simply respect their own laws.
01:29:30.260 --> 01:29:32.107
The Universal Declaration
of Human Rights,
01:29:32.131 --> 01:29:33.888
the EU Convention
on Human Rights.
01:29:33.913 --> 01:29:36.080
They require us
to observe the right
01:29:36.104 --> 01:29:38.201
to seek asylum
and preserve life.
01:29:38.226 --> 01:29:40.620
We are not doing that.
01:29:40.787 --> 01:29:44.874
What we're spending thousands
of euro doing and years doing
01:29:45.041 --> 01:29:47.460
is going through these courts
for no reason
01:29:47.485 --> 01:29:50.488
other than trying to
criminalise search and rescue.
01:29:52.048 --> 01:29:53.263
What are you going to do now?
01:29:53.287 --> 01:29:56.138
When do you think
this will be over?
01:29:56.651 --> 01:29:57.726
There is no indication.
01:29:57.750 --> 01:30:01.015
We could be waiting for
years. We will be.
01:30:01.182 --> 01:30:04.519
That's the problem. And
while I wait, what can we do?
01:30:04.686 --> 01:30:06.736
We have to wait in limbo,
01:30:06.760 --> 01:30:08.815
unable to continue
with our lives,
01:30:08.982 --> 01:30:11.709
unable to provide
care at the shoreline,
01:30:11.733 --> 01:30:13.545
unable to do anything but wait
01:30:13.570 --> 01:30:16.114
for this trial to finally
get its act together,
01:30:16.281 --> 01:30:19.325
for this prosecution
to do their job correctly.
01:30:22.829 --> 01:30:26.332
I just want to be innocent,
all of us. Just let us go.
01:30:26.791 --> 01:30:29.043
That's the only-case scenario
that we want.
01:30:29.210 --> 01:30:30.776
Just let us fucking go
01:30:30.800 --> 01:30:34.215
in one piece because we
can't live like this anymore.
01:30:35.158 --> 01:30:37.487
How much more
trauma will we get now?
01:30:37.527 --> 01:30:39.835
And how will we
live with it later?
01:30:41.798 --> 01:30:44.752
Just leave me to be
alive with the peace
01:30:44.776 --> 01:30:46.010
that I have already in me.
01:30:46.186 --> 01:30:47.896
And let me go.
01:31:11.002 --> 01:31:13.838
What is the strongest thing
about me right now?
01:31:14.005 --> 01:31:15.673
It's my voice.
01:31:23.097 --> 01:31:26.476
They tried to stop us,
they tried to stop me.
01:31:26.643 --> 01:31:29.354
But I will never, ever shut up.
01:31:35.193 --> 01:31:38.363
And if you don't take actions
and take actions now,
01:31:38.530 --> 01:31:41.157
there will be thousands
of Saras.
