During the 6 day war in 1967, Israel conquered the Eastern side of the town as well, extended its borders, and declared the whole of Jerusalem to be the capital of the country ... this status is not internationally recognised. According to the UN, East-Jerusalem is an occupied territory and claimed by the Palestinians as their capital.
