This story of intimate female friendship forged amidst America's longest war is told by a filmmaker who spent fifteen years in and out of Afghanistan. In this war movie, the battlefield lies behind the curtains of an Afghan home as Bibi Hajji struggles to survive the loss of her youngest child and the impact of a brother's death on her remaining sons. A haunting image of that boy surviving a bullet wound prompted director Carol Dysinger to investigate. What happened to him? Who fired the shot? The film evolves from procedural to an excavation of the human experience, of loss and redemption. It asks: how might we make peace across vast social, cultural and religious divisions? One cup of tea at a time.

-Okay, let's get in.
WOMAN: Back here?
00:02:40.600 --> 00:02:41.640
COLONEL: Yep.
WOMAN: Okay.
00:02:50.680 --> 00:02:52.720
WOMAN:
So how's it been going colonel?
00:02:52.880 --> 00:02:56.200
How do you like the road, Carol?
They just paved it.
00:02:56.360 --> 00:02:59.720
CAROL: Let's see how it
holds up. Who did the work?
00:02:59.880 --> 00:03:01.480
COLONEL: I'm not sure
what country did the work.
00:03:02.160 --> 00:03:04.280
He's been attacked
a couple times and what.
00:03:04.440 --> 00:03:09.240
It's patchy,
been damaged a couple times.
00:03:11.120 --> 00:03:13.000
(CAR HORN BEEPING)
00:03:16.440 --> 00:03:19.400
CAROL: Yeah, go ahead and lower it.
00:03:20.120 --> 00:03:22.480
My name is Colonel Bob Elliot
00:03:22.640 --> 00:03:24.440
and I am the investigating officer
00:03:24.600 --> 00:03:26.120
for the young man that was shot.
00:03:27.200 --> 00:03:28.640
We have been gathering evidence
00:03:28.800 --> 00:03:30.040
and the bottom line is
we are just trying to find out
00:03:30.200 --> 00:03:31.520
who shot the young man.
00:03:43.640 --> 00:03:46.440
SOLDIER: None of the folks
that he wants to talk to are here.
00:03:46.600 --> 00:03:48.040
This is 23 Alpha,
00:03:48.200 --> 00:03:51.880
we are clear of that hospital
and we are headed to 400...
00:03:52.960 --> 00:03:54.840
Taking a left.
00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:58.480
-We're going that way, right?
-Yes.
00:03:58.640 --> 00:04:00.040
Correct, I should say.
00:04:06.120 --> 00:04:07.720
ELLIOT:
Okay, we've got a little plan.
00:04:07.880 --> 00:04:11.120
We're gonna go
to the 17th police district
00:04:11.280 --> 00:04:15.160
and find the Chief of Police,
00:04:15.320 --> 00:04:16.560
who made a commitment
to go to the elder
00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:19.640
to find brass that was picked up.
00:04:19.800 --> 00:04:22.280
And, we called
and he hasn't done anything
00:04:22.440 --> 00:04:24.720
so we're going to go make a visit.
00:04:25.280 --> 00:04:26.640
And one more thing is,
00:04:26.800 --> 00:04:28.880
if it's all right with you
and your family,
00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:31.320
the professor here is
with the New York University
00:04:31.480 --> 00:04:32.520
doing a documentary
00:04:32.680 --> 00:04:34.640
and she would like to film
in the hospital
00:04:34.800 --> 00:04:35.920
with your brother,
00:04:36.080 --> 00:04:37.160
is that okay with you?
00:04:37.320 --> 00:04:41.480
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:04:41.640 --> 00:04:44.640
(AIRCRAFT FLYING OVERHEAD)
00:04:50.560 --> 00:04:52.080
All right, let's do it.
00:05:31.400 --> 00:05:33.880
There's another brother here?
00:05:34.040 --> 00:05:36.040
(INDISTINCT CONVERSATION)
00:05:46.720 --> 00:05:49.560
-Will there be side effects?
-No.
00:05:49.720 --> 00:05:52.400
I'm very cautious with my spine.
00:05:52.560 --> 00:05:57.120
I'm careful not to cause more damage.
00:05:57.280 --> 00:06:01.400
He's just scared.
Do you guys want to sit him up?
00:06:10.680 --> 00:06:11.960
Ask him how he feels.
00:06:12.120 --> 00:06:14.040
(SPEAKING IN DARI) -How do you feel?
-My head is spinning.
00:06:14.280 --> 00:06:16.000
TRANSLATOR:
He said my head is spinning.
00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:17.960
We're gonna take some deep breaths.
00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:24.840
Slow and easy.
00:06:27.160 --> 00:06:29.600
-Tell him he's doing very well.
-(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
00:06:29.760 --> 00:06:32.120
-Does he have any pain?
-(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
00:06:32.840 --> 00:06:33.840
No.
00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:35.080
Can he put his arms down a little?
00:06:35.240 --> 00:06:37.400
Hang on, give him a second.
He's holding on pretty tight.
00:06:39.480 --> 00:06:40.960
Tell him
we're gonna lay him down slowly.
00:06:41.120 --> 00:06:43.320
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
They will let you down now, OK?
00:06:43.480 --> 00:06:45.440
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Slowly, slowly.
00:06:51.280 --> 00:06:53.280
Now, let go of her neck.
00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:01.920
ELLIOT: I am still trying
to find out officially
00:07:02.080 --> 00:07:03.520
who shot you.
00:07:03.680 --> 00:07:08.040
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Col. Elliot says
he's trying to find out who shot you.
00:07:08.200 --> 00:07:10.320
(SPEAKING IN DARI) He'll do his best.
00:07:10.640 --> 00:07:11.640
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
They still haven't found him?
00:07:11.800 --> 00:07:12.800
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
No, not yet.
00:07:13.040 --> 00:07:17.440
TRANSLATOR:
Did you find out who fired the shot?
00:07:17.600 --> 00:07:20.920
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Have you started
the investigation to see who shot me?
00:07:21.080 --> 00:07:23.760
ELLIOT: What did he say?
-(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
00:07:23.920 --> 00:07:25.520
ELLIOT: That's all I've been doing.
00:07:25.680 --> 00:07:28.480
And I'm doing research to find
out the convoy
00:07:28.640 --> 00:07:30.960
that came through the location
00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:33.560
where allegedly the shots came from.
00:07:33.720 --> 00:07:37.480
In our system
I have got to prove the vehicle
00:07:37.640 --> 00:07:40.040
and find the person
that fired the gun.
00:07:40.200 --> 00:07:43.680
And then if I prove
it's an American that shot you
00:07:43.840 --> 00:07:47.400
we will make a settlement
with you for financials.
00:07:47.560 --> 00:07:51.080
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
He says that if we can prove
00:07:51.240 --> 00:07:54.080
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
that it was an American who fired,
00:07:54.280 --> 00:07:57.440
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
you will get financial support.
00:08:07.600 --> 00:08:10.280
(BUSY TRAFFIC)
00:08:17.160 --> 00:08:18.680
Go ahead.
00:08:18.840 --> 00:08:20.400
Okay, anything else?
00:08:21.680 --> 00:08:22.800
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
I saw gunfire from here.
00:08:22.960 --> 00:08:25.520
(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
He saw that they shot.
00:08:25.880 --> 00:08:27.720
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
I saw an American convoy.
00:08:27.880 --> 00:08:30.480
(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
He saw a United States convoy.
00:08:30.960 --> 00:08:32.000
ELLIOT: A United States convoy?
00:08:32.160 --> 00:08:33.720
TRANSLATOR: Yep, that's what he said.
00:08:33.880 --> 00:08:36.160
Okay... Right here
you saw them shoot?
00:08:36.320 --> 00:08:37.320
Where at? Right here?
00:08:37.480 --> 00:08:39.600
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
The shots came from over there.
00:08:39.760 --> 00:08:42.280
The shots came from over there.
00:08:43.720 --> 00:08:44.880
ELLIOT: How many vehicles did he see?
00:08:45.040 --> 00:08:46.680
(SPEAKING IN DARI) There were trucks
loaded with ISAF supplies.
00:08:46.840 --> 00:08:50.920
There were trucks loaded
with ISAF supplies.
00:08:51.080 --> 00:08:53.600
Then trucks in front and behind
with soldiers.
00:08:53.920 --> 00:08:56.320
The supplies were in the middle.
00:08:58.920 --> 00:09:01.200
Have him initial there.
Can he write or initial a mark?
00:09:01.360 --> 00:09:03.840
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:09:04.200 --> 00:09:06.440
-He can't write.
ELLIOT: An X?
00:09:06.600 --> 00:09:11.320
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Just sign
like this. Yeah, just like that.
00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:17.760
I am a witness. I saw
where the shots were fired from.
00:09:20.840 --> 00:09:21.840
ELLIOT: The bullet holes there.
00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:23.320
He shot there, from this direction.
00:09:23.480 --> 00:09:26.440
Shooting this way from the stairs.
00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:36.600
-Right there?
-(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:09:37.760 --> 00:09:39.720
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:09:39.880 --> 00:09:41.280
We dug out the round.
00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:42.480
We dug it out of that spot there.
00:09:49.720 --> 00:09:53.640
So the rounds came from across
the downhill side of the street.
00:09:54.520 --> 00:09:57.600
CAROL: So the rounds came from
the other street over there?
00:10:00.960 --> 00:10:02.800
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
You say the bullet came from there.
00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:05.240
He said from here. What should I say?
00:10:05.400 --> 00:10:08.000
The police say one thing,
you say something else...
00:10:08.160 --> 00:10:10.440
I just translate what people say.
00:10:10.800 --> 00:10:13.960
I never lie.
It'd be terrible if I lied.
00:10:14.240 --> 00:10:16.520
Whatever people say,
I translate all of it.
00:10:16.680 --> 00:10:17.840
Yes, tell the truth.
00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:21.640
-Don't think I'd edit anything out!
-That's fine.
00:10:21.800 --> 00:10:23.360
I'll tell them what you say.
00:10:24.240 --> 00:10:25.960
Yes, folks need to tell
what happened.
00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:27.800
The police weren't here.
00:10:28.120 --> 00:10:31.600
The police are right here.
Whatever they say is fine.
00:10:31.960 --> 00:10:35.720
Tell him not to say anymore.
Don't talk so much.
00:10:37.480 --> 00:10:41.040
ELLIOT: We think your brother
was shot accidently.
00:10:41.200 --> 00:10:43.080
The report should be in our favor.
00:10:43.240 --> 00:10:46.000
Not a report where they can
shoot someone and just go!
00:10:46.160 --> 00:10:50.040
Listen, he's saying
it wasn't a deliberate incident.
00:10:50.840 --> 00:10:52.760
We were at the doctor today.
00:10:52.920 --> 00:10:54.600
They say that the Turkish
00:10:54.760 --> 00:10:58.440
volunteer to take your brother
to Turkey to help him.
00:10:58.600 --> 00:11:00.080
And the family took him away.
00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:03.400
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Well, we thought
the US would be better than Turkey.
00:11:03.560 --> 00:11:04.760
He said, 'You know, we just thought
00:11:04.920 --> 00:11:06.120
that if you guys take him
to the United States,
00:11:06.280 --> 00:11:07.600
it's better than Turkey.
00:11:07.760 --> 00:11:09.360
So if you guys take him
to the United States
00:11:09.520 --> 00:11:10.920
it's far better.
00:11:12.040 --> 00:11:13.680
ELLIOT: We're not gonna be able
to take your brother
00:11:13.840 --> 00:11:14.920
to America to fix him.
00:11:15.080 --> 00:11:17.000
(SPEAKING IN DARI) He's saying
they can't take your brother
00:11:17.160 --> 00:11:18.680
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
to the US for treatment
00:11:18.840 --> 00:11:21.480
ELLIOT: Your brother's legs
are paralyzed.
00:11:21.640 --> 00:11:23.760
And he will not walk again.
00:11:23.920 --> 00:11:28.480
(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
00:11:44.480 --> 00:11:47.440
It was the Americans.
Why are you guys arguing?
00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:50.120
Everybody here knows.
It's not a big place.
00:11:50.680 --> 00:11:52.800
They made a mistake and fired.
00:11:52.960 --> 00:11:55.320
They fired
from this side of the street.
00:11:55.480 --> 00:11:59.200
The bullet flew across the road
and hit the bus and the boy.
00:11:59.360 --> 00:12:01.320
TRANSLATOR: I got a report
from the local people
00:12:01.480 --> 00:12:05.440
I mean like, just a mistake.
They just shot the guy.
00:12:07.440 --> 00:12:09.320
How does he know
they were American humvees?
00:12:09.480 --> 00:12:11.800
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:12:12.120 --> 00:12:15.960
We know the color of the vehicles.
00:12:16.120 --> 00:12:17.920
It's not like they are new here.
00:12:18.920 --> 00:12:20.840
Take him to the US for treatment.
00:12:21.000 --> 00:12:24.240
TRANSLATOR: If you guys verified
that they were Americans
00:12:24.400 --> 00:12:25.760
if you guys send him
to the United States
00:12:25.920 --> 00:12:27.880
to take care of him and cure him...
00:12:28.040 --> 00:12:30.120
I don't think that will happen
just so you know
00:12:30.280 --> 00:12:32.320
but they will give him
financial assistance to help him.
00:12:32.560 --> 00:12:34.480
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
The boy will not be sent to the US,
00:12:34.640 --> 00:12:37.240
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
but he will get financial help.
00:12:42.440 --> 00:12:44.480
As a police officer,
00:12:46.160 --> 00:12:48.920
how do you think I can be sure
00:12:49.080 --> 00:12:50.680
it was the Americans that fired?
00:12:53.600 --> 00:12:55.160
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
If you seek, you shall find.
00:12:56.920 --> 00:12:59.360
TRANSLATOR:
He said 'He who seeks, finds'.
00:12:59.760 --> 00:13:04.000
(SPEAKING IN DARI) I am telling you,
I am 100% sure
00:13:04.160 --> 00:13:05.920
these were American Forces.
00:13:06.520 --> 00:13:08.560
TRANSLATOR:
And the Chief of Police says
00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:10.600
that everybody knows that
Americans shot him.
00:13:11.480 --> 00:13:14.320
Everybody except me.
And I've gotta prove it.
00:13:14.480 --> 00:13:15.920
And that's what I need help with.
00:13:16.080 --> 00:13:21.480
(SPEAKING IN DARI) He says he needs
to prove who the shooter is.
00:13:25.320 --> 00:13:30.320
First, I would check the logs
at Bagram Airbase.
00:13:30.480 --> 00:13:32.600
All vehicle movements are registered.
00:13:33.680 --> 00:13:38.880
If you need more evidence,
look where the bullets hit
00:13:39.040 --> 00:13:40.480
where the blood was spilled.
00:13:40.640 --> 00:13:43.000
The evidence is
in the victim's body too.
00:13:43.680 --> 00:13:46.040
TRANSLATOR: You guys go over there
and find out.
00:13:46.400 --> 00:13:48.520
He who seeks will find it.
00:13:49.600 --> 00:13:52.160
-TRANSLATOR: What was that, sorry?
-He who seeks will find it.
00:13:52.320 --> 00:13:56.200
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:13:58.000 --> 00:13:59.440
-All right.
-Okay.
00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:12.480
That's the one that did the deed.
00:14:12.640 --> 00:14:14.800
ELLIOT: That was the one
that was in the body, yes.
00:14:21.280 --> 00:14:25.680
You can see here.
There is your penetrator.
00:14:28.920 --> 00:14:30.240
And there's your cannelure.
00:14:31.320 --> 00:14:33.480
Are any NATO forces using our rounds?
00:14:33.640 --> 00:14:36.880
Yes sir. The French,
the British, the Germans.
00:14:37.040 --> 00:14:38.480
The French, the British...
00:14:38.640 --> 00:14:44.800
Pretty much everybody in NATO
uses 556 and 762,
00:14:46.440 --> 00:14:48.800
762 by 50 NATO...
00:14:48.960 --> 00:14:51.480
There's no way of proving that's
our round then?
00:14:53.760 --> 00:14:56.840
Only if for example, like maybe
one of the other countries
00:14:57.000 --> 00:15:01.000
uses a different material
in the penetrator...
00:15:03.800 --> 00:15:06.160
Let's see what I can find here.
00:15:13.200 --> 00:15:14.520
(SPEAKING DARI)
I'm visiting my son!
00:15:14.680 --> 00:15:15.880
No, no, leave!
00:15:18.280 --> 00:15:20.480
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
He's bedridden!
00:15:20.640 --> 00:15:24.280
(SPEAKING IN DARI) I've brought food
for my son. He can't move!
00:15:24.440 --> 00:15:26.760
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
They shot my son!
00:15:26.920 --> 00:15:28.760
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Her child was shot
and you're yelling?
00:15:30.960 --> 00:15:35.120
WOMAN: Tell him my son has no father.
He's pure and innocent!
00:15:35.400 --> 00:15:36.840
I just want to bring him food.
00:15:37.000 --> 00:15:38.520
My son doesn't have anything.
00:15:38.680 --> 00:15:39.720
Please help.
00:15:39.880 --> 00:15:41.520
She's lying!
00:15:41.680 --> 00:15:43.000
Let her go in.
00:15:43.160 --> 00:15:45.480
(ARGUING CONTINUES IN BACKGROUND)
00:16:03.480 --> 00:16:04.760
Stop.
00:16:06.240 --> 00:16:08.040
ELLIOT: Have you heard the news?
00:16:08.200 --> 00:16:11.640
The country of Turkey
is gonna take you to Turkey
00:16:11.800 --> 00:16:13.560
in three days to give you therapy.
00:16:14.400 --> 00:16:17.240
The Turkish government
will cover all the costs.
00:16:17.400 --> 00:16:22.040
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:16:24.560 --> 00:16:28.520
BOY: After I return, will I be okay
or still bedridden?
00:16:28.680 --> 00:16:31.720
-Only God knows.
-You'll be fine, my boy.
00:16:33.040 --> 00:16:35.720
TRANSLATOR: He's concerned
about after surgery in Turkey,
00:16:35.880 --> 00:16:37.640
am I going to be able to walk?
00:16:37.800 --> 00:16:40.400
I was like, yeah, God is willing
you will be walking.
00:16:40.560 --> 00:16:43.040
They are going to make you strong.
00:16:43.200 --> 00:16:44.200
I believe that,
00:16:44.360 --> 00:16:45.920
because of the type of injury
that you have,
00:16:46.080 --> 00:16:48.760
I believe that there's a good chance
00:16:48.920 --> 00:16:50.600
that you may not be walking.
00:16:50.760 --> 00:16:55.280
TRANSLATOR: She says with the problem
that you have you should recover
00:16:55.560 --> 00:17:00.960
and get strong, God willing.
00:17:01.200 --> 00:17:06.160
She says it's not a problem.
It's not a complicated surgery.
00:17:06.640 --> 00:17:08.760
SOLDIER: Tell him I wish him
the best in Turkey.
00:17:08.920 --> 00:17:10.120
I know he is gonna get
a lot stronger there.
00:17:10.280 --> 00:17:11.440
Thanks.
00:17:11.600 --> 00:17:13.480
SOLDIER: And we look forward
to seeing him when he comes home.
00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:16.840
Put your arms around her.
00:17:18.200 --> 00:17:21.160
Is he aware of the sore that
he already has on his back?
00:17:21.320 --> 00:17:23.960
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Do you see
the sores he already has on his back?
00:17:24.120 --> 00:17:26.840
It's from laying too long.
00:17:27.000 --> 00:17:31.800
-(SLOW MUSIC)
-(DIALOGUE FADES OUT)
00:17:39.480 --> 00:17:42.160
(GENTLE MUSIC)
00:17:49.480 --> 00:17:52.040
CAROL: That was my second trip
to Afghanistan.
00:17:52.200 --> 00:17:55.360
And my first embedding
with the American military.
00:18:01.240 --> 00:18:04.240
Colonel Elliot couldn't sort out
who shot the young man.
00:18:04.400 --> 00:18:08.600
But he hoped the Turkish doctors
would be able to help him out.
00:18:11.800 --> 00:18:14.560
I asked if I could see
Elliot's final report,
00:18:15.680 --> 00:18:18.000
but he told me it was classified.
00:18:21.160 --> 00:18:23.680
So I didn't even know the boy's name.
00:18:26.800 --> 00:18:30.360
I filmed for several more years
and I saw many things.
00:18:31.520 --> 00:18:33.440
But I never forgot that boy.
00:18:46.400 --> 00:18:48.000
Every time I passed through Kabul,
00:18:48.160 --> 00:18:50.320
I would ask around
about the young man,
00:18:50.480 --> 00:18:52.360
but no one remembered the incident.
00:18:58.000 --> 00:19:01.960
Then one day I showed
the hospital footage to a doctor
00:19:02.120 --> 00:19:05.880
He paused a moment,
then he looked at me and said,
00:19:06.040 --> 00:19:09.680
"You, foreigner, you have a debt
to this country.
00:19:09.840 --> 00:19:12.000
You have a debt to peace,
00:19:12.160 --> 00:19:15.240
but you won't know what that is
until you find that young man.
00:19:21.320 --> 00:19:24.360
So five years after the incident,
00:19:24.520 --> 00:19:27.680
I hired a driver,
and set out to find him.
00:19:39.400 --> 00:19:41.920
I knew the shooting occurred in
front of the boy's house,
00:19:42.080 --> 00:19:44.320
in a very conservative
part of the city.
00:19:44.480 --> 00:19:47.000
But things change in five years
00:19:47.160 --> 00:19:48.920
and we had to look long and hard
00:19:49.080 --> 00:19:50.560
to find that street again.
00:19:51.600 --> 00:19:54.000
Finally, I recognized
the soccer field
00:19:54.160 --> 00:19:57.880
between the two roads,
and then the house.
00:19:59.040 --> 00:20:01.840
I'd only been with the boy
for a couple hours.
00:20:02.000 --> 00:20:04.440
There was no reason
to believe he'd remember me.
00:20:04.600 --> 00:20:08.160
So I took along pictures
to remind him and his brothers
00:20:08.320 --> 00:20:09.880
of the day I filmed them.
00:20:12.360 --> 00:20:14.440
(MUSIC FADES)
00:20:18.440 --> 00:20:19.520
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Show me, uncle?
00:20:20.240 --> 00:20:21.760
This was in the hospital.
00:20:22.640 --> 00:20:25.640
Yes, he was taken to the hospital.
00:20:25.800 --> 00:20:27.440
(CHILDREN BABBLING)
00:20:31.840 --> 00:20:33.040
He's in bed here.
00:20:39.160 --> 00:20:41.840
You were just a guest in this world.
00:20:49.000 --> 00:20:52.480
He waited so long
to be taken somewhere.
00:20:57.080 --> 00:20:59.560
CAROL: Tell her
I will make a better picture.
00:20:59.720 --> 00:21:03.480
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
She says we will print
00:21:03.640 --> 00:21:05.960
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
a better picture of him.
00:21:08.400 --> 00:21:10.560
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:21:24.000 --> 00:21:27.360
What beautiful eyes you have my son.
00:21:27.800 --> 00:21:33.080
I wish I could give you my life,
my dear.
00:21:33.240 --> 00:21:35.640
CAROL: Tell her I am so sorry.
00:21:36.600 --> 00:21:38.120
(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
00:21:40.520 --> 00:21:44.880
Oh my son,
they brought your picture today.
00:21:48.040 --> 00:21:49.120
Bibi, give it to me.
00:21:59.440 --> 00:22:04.360
He was seventeen.
He was lying in bed for two years.
00:22:04.720 --> 00:22:06.720
They shot him here in his butt.
00:22:08.320 --> 00:22:13.280
We suffered.
He suffered so much, too, too much.
00:22:15.120 --> 00:22:20.320
We were expecting help
but it never came,
00:22:20.480 --> 00:22:23.200
and Fahim passed away.
00:22:23.960 --> 00:22:27.080
TRANSLATOR:
He was in bed for two years.
00:22:27.240 --> 00:22:31.080
And they didn't have enough
money to take good care of him.
00:22:31.920 --> 00:22:34.800
CAROL: He seemed like
a good young man.
00:22:36.200 --> 00:22:39.520
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
What's she saying son?
00:22:43.080 --> 00:22:45.440
Did you tell her about my business?
00:22:46.320 --> 00:22:49.600
Do you have a pen? Go get me a pen.
00:22:51.640 --> 00:22:52.760
I have a pen.
00:22:53.520 --> 00:22:58.080
If she could help me
make some contacts.
00:22:58.760 --> 00:23:02.720
We can provide food, clothing,
00:23:02.880 --> 00:23:06.120
anything the military needs.
00:23:06.480 --> 00:23:12.200
The U.S. Embassy has
a lot of contracts with people.
00:23:13.000 --> 00:23:15.600
Meaning, can she help him out?
00:23:15.760 --> 00:23:19.960
Fawad has a logistics company,
00:23:20.120 --> 00:23:22.120
if you have some contacts
with these companies
00:23:22.280 --> 00:23:23.840
or other companies...
00:23:24.000 --> 00:23:26.640
Ahh I don't know many companies,
00:23:26.800 --> 00:23:33.720
I am a professor,
but... I will ask around.
00:23:33.880 --> 00:23:35.200
You will ask around.
00:23:36.720 --> 00:23:38.920
CAROL:
What's the name of the company?
00:23:39.080 --> 00:23:40.720
Afghan Atlantis.
00:23:40.880 --> 00:23:42.640
CAROL: Afghan...?
-Atlantis.
00:23:42.800 --> 00:23:44.480
-Atlantis?
-Atlantic.
00:23:44.640 --> 00:23:45.640
Atlantic.
00:23:45.800 --> 00:23:48.600
-Atlantis.
-Atlantis?
00:23:48.760 --> 00:23:53.160
This is a mystical city
that sank into the sea.
00:23:53.320 --> 00:23:55.800
-Atlantis?
-Atlantis. Yeah!
00:24:01.360 --> 00:24:06.080
Tell her to come on Saturday
for a proper lunch.
00:24:06.520 --> 00:24:08.800
Then my daughters
can make food for you.
00:24:08.960 --> 00:24:11.840
I invited you and you said no.
Ask her again...
00:24:12.080 --> 00:24:13.480
Are you free on Saturday?
00:24:13.640 --> 00:24:15.840
Yeah, have them come on Saturday.
00:24:16.880 --> 00:24:19.440
So on Saturday you will have lunch.
00:24:19.600 --> 00:24:22.520
(GENTLE VIOLIN MUSIC)
00:24:27.560 --> 00:24:29.760
CAROL: His name is Fahim.
00:24:31.240 --> 00:24:34.000
He'd been dead for two years.
00:24:34.160 --> 00:24:37.320
The last thing I expected
was an invitation to lunch.
00:24:39.760 --> 00:24:41.840
Americans are often assumed
to have connections
00:24:42.000 --> 00:24:44.120
to money, work, or visas.
00:24:46.640 --> 00:24:48.000
The invitation could be sincere,
00:24:48.160 --> 00:24:50.840
I am their guest
and guests mean a lot here.
00:24:52.160 --> 00:24:53.440
But I am also from the nation
00:24:53.600 --> 00:24:55.520
that most likely killed their boy.
00:24:57.280 --> 00:24:59.360
But Fahim's mother invited me.
00:25:00.640 --> 00:25:03.760
And maybe there was something
I could do for her.
00:25:14.800 --> 00:25:16.880
BIBI: We had to take Fahim
to the hospital.
00:25:17.040 --> 00:25:19.560
Someone should have followed them...
00:25:19.720 --> 00:25:22.520
They laser-marked us so we kept back.
Scared we'd be shot.
00:25:22.680 --> 00:25:26.280
The next day it was clear
it was a convoy.
00:25:26.520 --> 00:25:29.160
Witnesses said that night
they shot him and kept going.
00:25:29.320 --> 00:25:33.560
When they asked,
'What forces shot him?'
00:25:33.920 --> 00:25:35.680
We said it was the Americans
coming from Bagram.
00:25:36.400 --> 00:25:38.360
Have your tea. It's getting cold.
00:25:38.760 --> 00:25:42.880
Jawad, pour some tea for her.
00:25:47.880 --> 00:25:48.880
Thank you.
00:25:49.840 --> 00:25:51.680
CAROL: I remember
when I was at the hospital
00:25:51.840 --> 00:25:53.880
I think she came to visit Fahim.
00:25:54.040 --> 00:25:56.200
You were in a Burqa so I'm not sure.
00:25:56.760 --> 00:25:58.560
That was me.
00:25:58.720 --> 00:26:00.920
Yes, it was me,
I was wearing a burka.
00:26:02.920 --> 00:26:05.880
You were leaving the hospital
when I arrived.
00:26:08.080 --> 00:26:11.360
You came from the inside
and then you left.
00:26:12.160 --> 00:26:13.400
Daddy!
00:26:13.560 --> 00:26:14.560
Go back!
00:26:15.040 --> 00:26:16.120
Go outside.
00:26:17.000 --> 00:26:18.080
Play outside.
00:26:20.440 --> 00:26:22.840
The hospital in Turkey
was supposed to be free.
00:26:23.000 --> 00:26:25.320
But my brother Fawad told us,
00:26:25.480 --> 00:26:28.560
'When they did anything
I had to sign for it.'
00:26:29.520 --> 00:26:35.240
After the operation, they added it up
00:26:35.400 --> 00:26:40.480
They told us it cost 33,000 dollars.
00:26:41.040 --> 00:26:45.400
They told us we had to pay the bill,
but we weren't supposed to.
00:26:46.000 --> 00:26:49.440
We had to rent out our house.
We rented the house!
00:26:50.360 --> 00:26:53.640
It was no use.
00:26:55.320 --> 00:26:57.520
The whole thing was no use at all.
00:26:57.680 --> 00:27:03.560
To be honest we were all traumatized.
00:27:04.200 --> 00:27:10.040
We thought 'Why?'
They came to our country to help.
00:27:10.200 --> 00:27:13.280
Of course they came to help,
nothing else.
00:27:13.800 --> 00:27:16.000
Things like this should not happen.
00:27:19.560 --> 00:27:23.960
The food is ready so let's eat.
I'm just going to go bring it.
00:27:24.120 --> 00:27:25.840
So we should stay?
00:27:27.800 --> 00:27:29.640
This is where I really need your help
00:27:29.800 --> 00:27:31.240
because everybody always invites...
00:27:31.400 --> 00:27:35.600
Thank you, but don't bother yourself.
We have to be somewhere.
00:27:35.760 --> 00:27:37.400
No, we have already
prepared the food.
00:27:38.600 --> 00:27:40.800
You can eat a humble lunch with us.
00:27:41.040 --> 00:27:42.560
It's no trouble. We are Afghans!
00:27:42.800 --> 00:27:46.320
It's no trouble. There's no trouble.
00:27:48.840 --> 00:27:50.800
(LIGHT PIANO MUSIC)
00:28:09.040 --> 00:28:13.360
Tell her to taste our food.
Ask her if she likes it.
00:28:14.680 --> 00:28:17.960
We are country people, we always feed
a guest. Some people don't, son.
00:28:18.520 --> 00:28:21.120
If we don't,
we feel we haven't been polite.
00:28:23.640 --> 00:28:25.760
Slide that over closer to her.
00:28:31.760 --> 00:28:34.240
(MUSIC FADES)
00:28:39.520 --> 00:28:40.520
Where did the bullet come from?
00:28:41.400 --> 00:28:42.880
From over there, from that house.
00:28:43.440 --> 00:28:46.560
They shot from there,
and it hit around here.
00:28:46.720 --> 00:28:50.480
It was fired from there
and hit around here.
00:28:51.880 --> 00:28:53.760
Why didn't you stop the convoy?
00:28:54.600 --> 00:28:56.200
They marked us with a laser.
00:28:57.840 --> 00:29:01.120
We tried,
but they marked us and we got scared.
00:29:02.960 --> 00:29:03.960
Fawad, turn off the water.
00:29:06.480 --> 00:29:07.480
I did.
00:29:10.400 --> 00:29:13.000
I'm Fahim's brother.
00:29:14.440 --> 00:29:19.160
When he was injured,
I took him to Turkey.
00:29:20.000 --> 00:29:24.720
Fahim needed treatment,
we were there for four months.
00:29:25.600 --> 00:29:30.080
To be honest,
I have bitter memories from Turkey.
00:29:30.240 --> 00:29:33.240
I felt the pain in his eyes.
He was my brother.
00:29:33.480 --> 00:29:36.560
When I remember that pain,
I just can't...
00:29:36.800 --> 00:29:40.760
My head hurts and I get choked up.
00:29:41.360 --> 00:29:44.200
And... I don't know what to say.
00:29:45.840 --> 00:29:50.040
That's enough. I can't talk about it.
00:29:50.200 --> 00:29:52.720
CAROL: Okay, no worries.
00:29:52.880 --> 00:29:54.040
I am so sorry.
00:29:55.480 --> 00:29:57.000
Tell him. I think he knows.
00:29:57.160 --> 00:29:59.880
I thought Fahim was alive
when I came.
00:30:02.200 --> 00:30:03.520
(SPEAKING DARI)
What are they up to here?
00:30:03.680 --> 00:30:05.200
(SPEAKING DARI)
This was a soccer team.
00:30:06.560 --> 00:30:09.200
(SPEAKING DARI) -Which one is Fahim?
-The one holding the trophy.
00:30:09.360 --> 00:30:13.880
TRANSLATOR: This is Fahim holding
the cup with his soccer...
00:30:14.040 --> 00:30:15.640
CAROL: Which tournament?
00:30:15.800 --> 00:30:17.440
(SPEAKING DARI)
00:30:18.200 --> 00:30:23.480
If he had lived,
he would have had a bright future.
00:30:26.040 --> 00:30:27.680
(VIOLIN MUSIC)
00:30:42.280 --> 00:30:44.760
CAROL: Fahim was
the youngest of 11 children,
00:30:44.920 --> 00:30:47.240
the last of five brothers.
00:30:48.200 --> 00:30:51.440
He had six sisters.
All married and living elsewhere
00:30:51.600 --> 00:30:53.960
with their husbands' families.
00:30:54.120 --> 00:30:57.280
His father died
when he was quite young.
00:30:57.440 --> 00:31:00.760
In Afghanistan you are
an orphan when your father dies,
00:31:00.920 --> 00:31:03.200
even if your mother is still living.
00:31:03.360 --> 00:31:07.280
(MUSIC FADES)
00:31:12.080 --> 00:31:15.320
(GENTLE MUSIC)
00:31:15.760 --> 00:31:18.880
CAROL:
Bibi Hajji is my age. And a widow.
00:31:19.040 --> 00:31:23.280
Three of her sons live with her,
like in most Afghan families.
00:31:23.440 --> 00:31:25.000
Two of the sons are married,
00:31:25.160 --> 00:31:27.600
so their wives live there too
with all of their children.
00:31:29.680 --> 00:31:32.960
Bibi has a lot of grandchildren.
00:31:36.440 --> 00:31:37.600
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Do you pray?
00:31:39.720 --> 00:31:41.680
(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
00:31:42.200 --> 00:31:43.920
CAROL: In a different way, yes.
00:31:45.040 --> 00:31:47.560
But I am not a muslim.
00:31:52.480 --> 00:31:55.120
I prayed with my Bibi
when I was little.
00:31:56.760 --> 00:31:57.880
I don't pray.
00:31:58.040 --> 00:32:00.280
TRANSLATOR: You don't pray?
-Nope.
00:32:00.640 --> 00:32:02.560
You'll pray when you grow up, no?
00:32:05.120 --> 00:32:08.040
-Yep. I will go to school too.
-You'll go to school too?
00:32:08.520 --> 00:32:11.720
I'll go to school
when I grow a little.
00:32:12.640 --> 00:32:14.560
I'll go to school when I am bigger.
00:32:17.320 --> 00:32:19.840
CAROL: Do you remember being a kid?
00:32:20.480 --> 00:32:23.520
My father died when I was young.
00:32:24.640 --> 00:32:25.720
I was orphaned.
00:32:26.440 --> 00:32:29.000
My husband already had three wives
00:32:29.640 --> 00:32:33.440
when the marriage was arranged.
00:32:34.280 --> 00:32:36.040
I was an orphan
and had no other choice.
00:32:37.160 --> 00:32:40.400
CAROL: How old were you
when you got married?
00:32:41.560 --> 00:32:42.760
I was sixteen years old.
00:32:43.160 --> 00:32:44.480
(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
00:32:46.280 --> 00:32:47.320
Sixteen.
00:32:47.800 --> 00:32:51.600
The man had white hair.
00:32:53.320 --> 00:32:55.200
CAROL:
So did you go to school at all?
00:32:55.360 --> 00:32:58.080
No, I was an orphan.
My father was dead.
00:32:58.360 --> 00:33:01.640
I had to work to eat,
nobody sent me to school.
00:33:02.320 --> 00:33:04.520
The desire to go to school
stayed in my heart.
00:33:10.440 --> 00:33:12.040
Don't close the door.
00:33:12.680 --> 00:33:13.880
Don't close it!
00:33:14.360 --> 00:33:15.600
Don't close it!
00:33:16.120 --> 00:33:17.120
Don't close it!
00:33:18.760 --> 00:33:20.600
(LAUGHTER)
00:33:23.520 --> 00:33:25.360
CAROL: Do you remember your mother?
00:33:25.520 --> 00:33:27.160
Yes, she died in front of me.
00:33:27.880 --> 00:33:30.520
I was with her when she died,
my poor mother.
00:33:31.120 --> 00:33:32.760
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Are your parents alive?
00:33:32.920 --> 00:33:35.720
TRANSLATOR: She asks do you have
mother and father, parents?
00:33:36.400 --> 00:33:39.400
I did but, they have passed away.
00:33:39.560 --> 00:33:41.600
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Passed away. I see
00:33:41.760 --> 00:33:48.040
CAROL: My mother died ten years ago,
no, eight years ago.
00:33:48.200 --> 00:33:52.920
And like her, I nursed her
until the very very end.
00:33:54.320 --> 00:33:57.360
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Her mother died eight years ago
00:33:57.520 --> 00:33:59.720
(SPEAKING IN DARI) and she took care
of her until she died.
00:34:01.640 --> 00:34:03.880
CAROL: It's what daughters do.
00:34:05.320 --> 00:34:07.720
(SPEAKING IN DARI) She says
that's what daughters do.
00:34:14.920 --> 00:34:19.240
Eat some. You haven't eaten at all.
00:34:19.680 --> 00:34:23.040
I, for one, eat a whole watermelon.
In one sitting.
00:34:23.360 --> 00:34:26.320
There's only a quarter here.
Eat it, please!
00:34:26.720 --> 00:34:30.360
Farida, come get the baby,
she is after the watermelon.
00:34:31.320 --> 00:34:35.360
Come over. Come here.
00:34:35.520 --> 00:34:37.760
(LAUGHTER)
00:34:43.440 --> 00:34:44.680
CAROL: How are you doing?
00:34:44.840 --> 00:34:46.640
How has it been
since I was last here?
00:34:47.920 --> 00:34:53.120
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:34:54.760 --> 00:34:56.280
It's life. It passes.
00:34:56.440 --> 00:34:59.640
Grief and sorrow
can never be forgotten...
00:34:59.800 --> 00:35:02.920
but one has to
get through them somehow.
00:35:04.680 --> 00:35:08.400
I have four brothers.
One of them lives in Germany.
00:35:09.160 --> 00:35:10.600
Three of us are here.
00:35:12.560 --> 00:35:14.600
The three of us live here.
00:35:15.160 --> 00:35:19.960
My other brother and I are policemen.
00:35:20.520 --> 00:35:27.160
And this one here,
he is... "self-employed."
00:35:28.680 --> 00:35:31.240
CAROL:
So do you still have your company?
00:35:31.400 --> 00:35:36.120
I had Afghan Atlantis
with a business partner in Germany.
00:35:36.840 --> 00:35:39.200
He ran off with all the money,
70,000 dollars,
00:35:39.520 --> 00:35:41.520
and our company license.
00:35:42.200 --> 00:35:44.000
CAROL: Oh no!
00:35:44.160 --> 00:35:48.520
I trusted him as a Muslim
but he deceived me.
00:35:53.480 --> 00:35:56.600
CAROL: What do you see in the future
coming? How do you feel about...
00:35:56.760 --> 00:36:01.560
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:36:02.040 --> 00:36:07.120
Tell her she should answer
my question, then I will answer hers.
00:36:07.680 --> 00:36:10.360
Why did America come here?
What do you think?
00:36:11.880 --> 00:36:14.920
CAROL: I am here to make a movie.
00:36:15.080 --> 00:36:17.640
(SPEAKING IN DARI) She says
'I am here independently,
00:36:17.800 --> 00:36:19.880
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
to make a movie on my own'.
00:36:20.560 --> 00:36:25.480
I know. Everyone has a job to do.
00:36:26.280 --> 00:36:29.640
Set that aside...
00:36:30.400 --> 00:36:34.080
As long as America is not meeting
its goals in Afghanistan,
00:36:34.400 --> 00:36:39.560
it doesn't want to own these problems
in front of the rest of the world.
00:36:39.880 --> 00:36:41.120
Here's your mic.
00:36:46.400 --> 00:36:47.480
Why?
00:36:52.120 --> 00:36:54.440
He was coming out of the mosque.
00:36:54.600 --> 00:36:55.800
A kid.
00:36:57.040 --> 00:36:58.320
Are they blind?
00:36:58.480 --> 00:37:00.680
With their lasers, can't they see?
00:37:00.840 --> 00:37:03.920
They can shoot something this small
00:37:04.080 --> 00:37:06.600
from the other end of the street.
00:37:07.400 --> 00:37:11.320
I will never have
any power in this world,
00:37:12.280 --> 00:37:16.280
but in the next world,
whoever fired that shot
00:37:16.440 --> 00:37:17.800
like dogs...
00:37:18.280 --> 00:37:22.800
Like dogs. I will put a chain
around his neck and drag him and say
00:37:23.040 --> 00:37:26.960
'You were not a Muslim, who I would
forgive for killing my brother.
00:37:27.120 --> 00:37:28.760
You were far from God.'
00:37:29.440 --> 00:37:31.920
I pray God will allow me
to punish them myself.
00:37:32.080 --> 00:37:33.560
That's my goal.
00:37:34.920 --> 00:37:36.440
A dog, like a dog.
00:37:38.560 --> 00:37:41.320
(FAST PACED MUSIC)
00:38:00.960 --> 00:38:04.720
When they shot my son,
it was midnight, sister.
00:38:06.040 --> 00:38:09.040
He went to the mosque
at eight o'clock for Tarawih.
00:38:11.440 --> 00:38:15.200
He went for Tarawih prayers
and stayed late.
00:38:15.640 --> 00:38:18.320
Then he came home with two VHS tapes.
00:38:20.440 --> 00:38:23.200
I told him, 'No son,
you can't watch them now.
00:38:23.440 --> 00:38:26.120
I have to get up early to pray.'
00:38:26.360 --> 00:38:28.520
He said, 'Mom, I want to watch now
00:38:28.680 --> 00:38:31.160
because tomorrow I'll pray
at the mosque all night.'
00:38:31.680 --> 00:38:34.600
I said, 'No son,
you can't watch them now.
00:38:34.760 --> 00:38:37.880
I really have to sleep.'
00:38:40.200 --> 00:38:42.040
He put the tapes down and left.
00:38:45.160 --> 00:38:46.720
And then I heard shots outside.
00:38:46.960 --> 00:38:48.120
They are shooting!
00:38:52.000 --> 00:38:58.120
I went out, and there was
my older son Fawad.
00:38:58.920 --> 00:39:01.080
I asked him, 'What's going on?
Who got shot?'
00:39:01.240 --> 00:39:02.880
He said, 'Keep quiet, Mom.'
00:39:04.160 --> 00:39:05.800
'Fahim is shot.'
00:39:20.560 --> 00:39:24.320
FAWAD: I have very bitter memories
of the time they shot Fahim.
00:39:24.920 --> 00:39:28.160
When he was in the hospital,
a pain arose in my soul.
00:39:30.520 --> 00:39:34.840
I would go, and I didn't even have
the money for the prescription.
00:39:36.440 --> 00:39:40.000
Not having the money for
his prescription was so painful.
00:39:40.320 --> 00:39:46.920
My heart was so...
I wanted to blow up American tanks.
00:39:47.080 --> 00:39:48.640
That's how bad it got.
00:39:49.760 --> 00:39:54.200
But with the passage of time,
I understood reality
00:39:54.360 --> 00:39:57.280
and chose to wait
for the Judgement Day.
00:39:57.720 --> 00:39:59.280
There was nothing I could do.
00:39:59.680 --> 00:40:02.280
You simply can't avenge
one person for another.
00:40:05.280 --> 00:40:08.000
(TELEVISION IN BACKGROUND)
00:40:15.520 --> 00:40:18.440
(GENTLE MUSIC FADES IN)
00:40:57.920 --> 00:41:03.280
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Does she have a dog or a cat?
00:41:03.440 --> 00:41:05.600
(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
00:41:05.760 --> 00:41:08.880
CAROL: I had two,
but they died this month.
00:41:09.240 --> 00:41:10.840
She does. She has two.
00:41:11.000 --> 00:41:12.600
Didn't I tell you?
00:41:12.840 --> 00:41:15.120
They live with dogs and cats.
00:41:16.400 --> 00:41:18.440
Help yourself.
00:41:24.040 --> 00:41:25.960
CAROL: Who is this here?
00:41:26.120 --> 00:41:27.680
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Who is that?
00:41:28.400 --> 00:41:31.720
One is my stepson
and the other my husband, Shuib.
00:41:33.200 --> 00:41:36.320
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Shrapnel from a bomb
00:41:36.480 --> 00:41:38.040
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
hit my husband in the heart.
00:41:39.280 --> 00:41:42.120
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
During the civil wars.
00:41:42.760 --> 00:41:45.000
TRANSLATOR:
Someone shoot him in the heart.
00:41:45.160 --> 00:41:48.560
They were fighting.
And it was Taliban.
00:41:50.240 --> 00:41:52.520
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
By God, when I was your age
00:41:53.160 --> 00:41:59.240
(SPEAKING IN DARI) I had faith in God
but did not pray regularly.
00:42:00.160 --> 00:42:02.080
TRANSLATOR:
She said, when she was younger
00:42:02.240 --> 00:42:04.520
she didn't pray very good.
00:42:07.680 --> 00:42:10.880
CAROL: And why is that?
Why do you think?
00:42:11.040 --> 00:42:12.960
What changed? What made you change?
00:42:13.120 --> 00:42:17.120
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:42:18.280 --> 00:42:24.960
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Maybe it was a strong love.
00:42:28.120 --> 00:42:32.440
TRANSLATOR:
She said I am near to dying.
00:42:32.600 --> 00:42:36.360
There will be a questioning.
God will ask us what we did.
00:42:37.000 --> 00:42:40.000
It is difficult to answer
Great God's questions.
00:42:40.840 --> 00:42:45.000
Everyone will be questioned.
You, me, her. All of us.
00:42:46.360 --> 00:42:49.160
(PIANO MUSIC)
00:42:58.880 --> 00:43:00.680
CAROL: When I was back home
in the States,
00:43:00.840 --> 00:43:03.280
and the news came on
about Afghanistan,
00:43:04.400 --> 00:43:09.200
I could not help but hear it
with Bibi's grief, and Fawad's anger.
00:43:11.320 --> 00:43:14.640
An American soldier walked
off his base and into a village
00:43:14.800 --> 00:43:17.880
killing 17 villagers in cold blood.
00:43:19.200 --> 00:43:23.280
The U.S. states that their soldiers
are not subject to Afghan Law.
00:43:23.440 --> 00:43:26.680
The Taliban bomb a mosque
00:43:26.840 --> 00:43:29.000
killing the Mullah
and seven civilians,
00:43:29.160 --> 00:43:30.960
wounding 70 more.
00:43:32.360 --> 00:43:35.760
Civilian casualties
are at an all-time high.
00:43:44.240 --> 00:43:46.920
And then one of Bibi's daughters
died in childbirth.
00:43:48.120 --> 00:43:51.320
Bibi had to get the kids
through their grief,
00:43:51.480 --> 00:43:55.200
and teach the girls how to take over
their mother's household duties.
00:43:56.000 --> 00:43:58.560
She asked me to come with her
to keep her company.
00:43:59.400 --> 00:44:01.080
So I did.
00:44:30.680 --> 00:44:32.040
BIBI: Zohra!
00:44:32.200 --> 00:44:34.800
Chop up a potato and add it too.
00:44:36.040 --> 00:44:37.600
Yes, Grandma.
00:44:39.760 --> 00:44:42.680
There are five --
three daughters and two sons.
00:44:43.240 --> 00:44:45.920
The older one is mute.
00:44:46.240 --> 00:44:49.240
Tell her the one
who just arrived is mute.
00:44:52.600 --> 00:44:54.760
Hey girl, is the washing machine off?
00:44:55.320 --> 00:45:00.520
Do you hear me?
The washing machine is off?
00:45:01.000 --> 00:45:03.440
It's not off, dear Grandma.
00:45:04.800 --> 00:45:06.560
Then why did it stop?
00:45:13.040 --> 00:45:15.800
-Throw this in, Grandma?
-Yes.
00:45:22.000 --> 00:45:23.400
Won't work.
00:45:27.000 --> 00:45:28.000
It's too short.
00:45:29.960 --> 00:45:31.840
I need to lower it that much.
00:45:33.640 --> 00:45:37.760
I was young
when I learned how to sew.
00:45:39.240 --> 00:45:41.280
And I used to pick up cow poop!
00:45:42.880 --> 00:45:44.600
To make the fire wood last.
00:45:45.000 --> 00:45:48.240
My mom taught us all this to survive.
00:45:49.160 --> 00:45:53.920
To sew our own clothes,
our own pants.
00:45:54.520 --> 00:45:59.040
The household clothes.
My mom, my mother.
00:46:02.600 --> 00:46:04.280
Mother taught us.
00:46:06.320 --> 00:46:09.560
CAROL: Yes, my grandmother
taught me to sew.
00:46:10.560 --> 00:46:14.000
Your grandmother taught you
to make films? Like this?
00:46:14.800 --> 00:46:16.400
She taught you these things?
00:46:18.000 --> 00:46:23.120
No, that I learned on my own.
I learned at school.
00:46:23.280 --> 00:46:27.120
-You taught yourself, Carol?
-She learned at school
00:46:30.600 --> 00:46:34.400
Why didn't you get married
and make children, like this one?
00:46:35.160 --> 00:46:38.880
Why didn't you get a husband?
00:46:40.200 --> 00:46:41.920
CAROL: I was married.
00:46:42.080 --> 00:46:44.760
BIBI: To have company
when you are sick and what not.
00:46:45.800 --> 00:46:47.760
TRANSLATOR: She was married once.
00:46:48.120 --> 00:46:49.640
Do it again.
00:46:53.280 --> 00:46:55.440
TRANSLATOR:
She also teaches at a university.
00:46:56.320 --> 00:46:58.600
BIBI:
She must have a good salary, right?
00:47:00.040 --> 00:47:03.120
What is she going to do
if she doesn't get married?
00:47:03.800 --> 00:47:05.680
Make sure you get married girl.
00:47:06.080 --> 00:47:07.120
All right.
00:47:07.680 --> 00:47:12.400
You should be careful. When you
get old, nobody will marry you.
00:47:14.800 --> 00:47:16.800
CAROL: No, Fawad is not married.
00:47:17.360 --> 00:47:21.920
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
No, Fawad is not married.
00:47:22.800 --> 00:47:25.240
What can I do?
God knows what will happen to him.
00:47:26.920 --> 00:47:27.920
Zohra.
00:47:29.000 --> 00:47:32.160
Make the tea well, dear.
00:47:39.000 --> 00:47:41.840
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
The Taliban would tear you apart.
00:47:44.560 --> 00:47:46.240
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
If they catch you making this film
00:47:46.400 --> 00:47:47.800
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
they will tear you apart.
00:47:49.160 --> 00:47:51.040
CAROL: What did she say?
00:47:51.200 --> 00:47:54.640
TRANSLATOR: If Taliban see this movie
they will come and kill us.
00:47:54.800 --> 00:47:57.120
CAROL: Is she joking?
00:47:57.960 --> 00:48:00.200
TRANSLATOR: Are you joking?
-Yeah.
00:48:20.840 --> 00:48:21.960
These are pretty bad.
00:48:22.720 --> 00:48:25.000
No, they are not bad.
00:48:25.320 --> 00:48:27.240
That's enough, that's it.
00:48:27.640 --> 00:48:29.400
They're all broken.
00:48:30.800 --> 00:48:33.280
-How much is the garlic?
-90 Afs per kilo.
00:48:33.600 --> 00:48:35.560
-Come on, 80 is fine.
-Can't do it.
00:48:35.960 --> 00:48:38.040
-Give me a kilo.
-No. Not for 80.
00:48:38.600 --> 00:48:41.880
Why not? Why are you
making me go somewhere else?
00:48:42.440 --> 00:48:44.160
Go ahead. Weigh it.
00:48:47.800 --> 00:48:50.080
Let me add a couple
to make it a kilo and half.
00:48:50.640 --> 00:48:52.600
What is she doing? Is she filming?
00:48:53.760 --> 00:48:57.000
Auntie do you know she will
take your picture to America?
00:48:57.160 --> 00:48:58.880
It doesn't matter
if she takes it to America.
00:48:59.440 --> 00:49:02.120
My face is covered.
00:49:02.400 --> 00:49:07.280
I don't care, my face is covered.
00:49:10.440 --> 00:49:12.520
(GENTLE MUSIC)
00:49:30.920 --> 00:49:36.680
Let's go.
Carol's filming me cooking Bolani.
00:49:36.840 --> 00:49:38.640
Does she know this food?
00:49:45.640 --> 00:49:48.040
-Do not add the...
-The eggplants?
00:49:49.680 --> 00:49:52.920
You should have fried them first.
00:49:53.080 --> 00:49:54.760
-I forgot.
-You forgot.
00:50:07.240 --> 00:50:12.960
When such an injustice occurs,
you can see how much pain is felt...
00:50:14.840 --> 00:50:17.080
when an atrocity like that happens...
00:50:17.640 --> 00:50:24.200
BIBI: Here, set it out here,
neat and clean.
00:50:27.160 --> 00:50:29.240
The bolanis are getting cold.
00:50:30.920 --> 00:50:33.280
Some pickles and chutney
will be good, too.
00:50:33.600 --> 00:50:36.600
Ask her, this cruelty that occurred,
00:50:36.920 --> 00:50:42.720
who will have to answer for it?
00:50:44.200 --> 00:50:50.880
Ask her if she knows that God will
ask us about everything.
00:50:56.000 --> 00:50:59.320
We couldn't do it, but ask her if
there will be a day of reckoning?
00:50:59.480 --> 00:51:00.840
Is there justice?
00:51:02.240 --> 00:51:04.960
I cared for him. You did too.
00:51:05.120 --> 00:51:06.440
But who will ask for justice?
00:51:06.600 --> 00:51:09.000
There's so much dust
from traffic outside.
00:51:09.440 --> 00:51:11.280
I should get a plastic sheet
to cover it.
00:51:12.240 --> 00:51:14.120
FAWAD: Not now, mother. Later.
00:51:17.640 --> 00:51:20.480
BIBI: Tell her let's eat the Bolani.
00:51:21.760 --> 00:51:23.160
CAROL: What did he say?
00:51:23.320 --> 00:51:28.480
TRANSLATOR: Should somebody answer
to all the things that happened?
00:51:28.640 --> 00:51:29.920
BIBI: Sit down and help yourself.
00:51:30.080 --> 00:51:31.960
Come on, it's hot!
00:51:54.040 --> 00:51:57.960
I want to ask her,
why is she not married at her age?
00:51:58.520 --> 00:51:59.720
Why are you still single?
00:51:59.880 --> 00:52:01.920
CAROL: I did get married.
00:52:03.440 --> 00:52:05.120
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
She did get married.
00:52:05.760 --> 00:52:08.760
When I was 33.
00:52:09.840 --> 00:52:11.320
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
When she was 33.
00:52:12.680 --> 00:52:14.360
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
No children with him?
00:52:14.520 --> 00:52:17.120
TRANSLATOR: What happened?
Why don't you have children?
00:52:19.240 --> 00:52:20.960
CAROL: I can't.
00:52:23.280 --> 00:52:24.800
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
What is she saying?
00:52:25.480 --> 00:52:27.800
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
She can't have children.
00:52:28.800 --> 00:52:33.840
(SPEAKING IN DARI)You could.
They can take the baby out from here.
00:52:37.120 --> 00:52:38.120
TRANSLATOR:
You should have two children.
00:52:38.280 --> 00:52:39.440
CAROL: What?
00:52:39.600 --> 00:52:41.520
TRANSLATOR:
You should have two children.
00:52:43.040 --> 00:52:44.240
CAROL: I wish!
00:52:45.560 --> 00:52:47.240
But I couldn't.
00:52:48.800 --> 00:52:52.920
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Why didn't she get married?
00:52:54.160 --> 00:52:57.040
TRANSLATOR: She asked
why you didn't get married again?
00:52:59.080 --> 00:53:00.920
CAROL: Nobody asked?
00:53:01.400 --> 00:53:06.160
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Nobody asked?
00:53:10.480 --> 00:53:12.400
(GENTLE MUSIC)
00:53:49.680 --> 00:53:51.080
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
00:53:53.160 --> 00:53:56.400
TRANSLATOR: When do you leave?
00:53:57.360 --> 00:54:00.080
CAROL:
Not tomorrow, but the next day.
00:54:03.320 --> 00:54:05.760
TRANSLATOR: The day after tomorrow.
-She's leaving on Friday?
00:54:06.000 --> 00:54:10.320
Tell her to bring some medicine
00:54:10.720 --> 00:54:14.600
for anemia and for strength.
00:54:14.760 --> 00:54:16.240
Tell her that, okay?
00:54:17.400 --> 00:54:19.440
And some strength medicine.
00:54:19.960 --> 00:54:22.480
She has already given me
blood pressure pills.
00:54:22.880 --> 00:54:26.840
Also for leg pain,
tablets for the pain in my feet.
00:54:27.800 --> 00:54:29.920
CAROL: I'm not sure
what the medicine is for the blood.
00:54:30.080 --> 00:54:31.480
She needs
the blood pressure medication.
00:54:32.320 --> 00:54:37.480
I'll have to ask Dr. Omar
what that translates as...
00:54:37.720 --> 00:54:38.720
Shut the door.
00:54:44.000 --> 00:54:46.160
What's this for?
00:54:46.680 --> 00:54:50.520
Don't touch it! You're messing it up.
00:54:55.480 --> 00:54:57.240
I don't feel so good.
00:54:59.360 --> 00:55:00.920
Shall we leave?
00:55:01.080 --> 00:55:06.120
No, please sit, you can stay.
00:55:08.080 --> 00:55:13.800
Hey, my daughter, can you get
that blanket and cover me up?
00:55:18.480 --> 00:55:21.240
Bless you, my dear. I am so cold.
00:55:29.280 --> 00:55:31.480
CAROL: I wanted to ask her
00:55:32.080 --> 00:55:37.040
if she wanted to reinvestigate
her son's case
00:55:37.400 --> 00:55:41.480
and so I want to ask her
if she thinks that's a good thing
00:55:41.640 --> 00:55:43.800
or if she'd rather
that it did not happen.
00:55:43.960 --> 00:55:50.640
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Bibi Haji.
00:56:10.520 --> 00:56:13.240
Who would reopen the file?
00:56:13.720 --> 00:56:18.360
It happened and they left.
Who is going to go after Americans?
00:56:19.280 --> 00:56:22.640
What American is going to
open the file?
00:56:23.640 --> 00:56:24.640
That's it.
00:56:25.400 --> 00:56:27.280
The Americans shot him and left.
00:56:30.440 --> 00:56:33.920
What American, where,
would reopen that file?
00:56:34.080 --> 00:56:36.320
'Where'd we shoot him?
Where'd we leave him?'
00:56:36.480 --> 00:56:39.680
No. They left.
Who's going to bring them back?
00:56:48.000 --> 00:56:52.080
(FAST PACED MUSIC)
00:56:52.480 --> 00:56:54.400
CAROL: After 12 years in contrary,
00:56:54.560 --> 00:56:59.400
for the first time the US announced
coalition plans to withdraw.
00:57:03.440 --> 00:57:04.640
I retraced my steps
00:57:04.800 --> 00:57:07.840
looking for the written report
of Fahim's shooting
00:57:08.000 --> 00:57:10.880
in case there was a
chance of some kind of restitution
00:57:11.040 --> 00:57:13.160
someday when all this was over.
00:57:17.480 --> 00:57:20.280
I tracked down
the Afghan police chief from the time
00:57:20.440 --> 00:57:23.000
but he had filed his report
with his headquarters.
00:57:23.360 --> 00:57:25.800
I went to police headquarters
in downtown Kabul,
00:57:25.960 --> 00:57:28.320
his report was not on file.
00:57:30.040 --> 00:57:31.680
Because no charges had been made,
00:57:31.840 --> 00:57:34.360
there was no official record
anywhere in Afghanistan
00:57:34.520 --> 00:57:36.680
that I could find.
00:57:38.360 --> 00:57:42.240
I made my way onto the NATO base,
but they had no record of it.
00:57:42.400 --> 00:57:43.960
So I tracked down Colonel Elliot
00:57:44.120 --> 00:57:47.920
to see if he could declassify
his report from 2006,
00:57:48.080 --> 00:57:50.280
or even had any idea where it was.
00:57:50.440 --> 00:57:53.320
ELLIOT: I turned my entire report
back to my headquarters
00:57:53.480 --> 00:57:55.440
and that's the last I knew about it.
00:57:55.600 --> 00:57:57.520
I'll bet they just got buried.
00:57:58.440 --> 00:58:02.120
I think it'll be one of those
just lost in the black hole
00:58:02.280 --> 00:58:04.160
of some investigator's files.
00:58:04.320 --> 00:58:06.440
You know, never with an answer.
00:58:06.720 --> 00:58:11.240
CAROL: Never with an answer.
A debt remained unpaid.
00:58:21.520 --> 00:58:24.040
CAROL: Is this another son?
00:58:24.200 --> 00:58:26.760
TRANSLATOR: Are you Bibi Haji's son?
-Yes
00:58:27.960 --> 00:58:31.120
CAROL: From Germany?
-Yes.
00:58:36.560 --> 00:58:39.680
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Bibi Haji
has been waiting for her sister Carol
00:58:39.840 --> 00:58:43.400
(SPEAKING IN DARI) to show up.
00:58:43.680 --> 00:58:44.840
CAROL: What?
00:58:45.000 --> 00:58:47.160
TRANSLATOR:
Bibi Hajji was thinking about you.
00:58:47.880 --> 00:58:49.320
CAROL: I like her.
00:58:50.560 --> 00:58:54.040
Bibi Haji likes you very...
00:58:54.200 --> 00:58:55.800
CAROL: I Iike her too.
00:58:55.960 --> 00:59:01.120
And she is so much,
exactly like my Italian grandmother.
00:59:01.280 --> 00:59:03.400
Exactly?
CAROL: Exactly!
00:59:04.000 --> 00:59:08.080
CAROL: She is a power,
she is quite a mother.
00:59:08.240 --> 00:59:12.080
When I'm in Germany,
I miss my mother.
00:59:12.840 --> 00:59:15.680
CAROL: Yeah I bet you did.
-Very, very bad.
00:59:18.800 --> 00:59:21.120
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Does she know Fawad? My brother?
00:59:21.280 --> 00:59:22.920
TRANSLATOR: Does you know Fawad?
00:59:23.360 --> 00:59:27.840
(SPEAKING IN DARI) He bought you
a Quran for 3,000 Afs.
00:59:28.400 --> 00:59:34.520
TRANSLATOR: Fawad bought you book,
a Quran in English for 3,000 Afs.
00:59:34.680 --> 00:59:36.520
CAROL: No!
TRANSLATOR: Yes.
00:59:37.280 --> 00:59:39.000
CAROL: I like Fawad.
00:59:39.160 --> 00:59:44.040
But when I met him,
he didn't seem to be so... intense.
00:59:44.840 --> 00:59:46.000
About Islam.
00:59:48.000 --> 00:59:52.320
Everybody reflects and evolves.
He has his thoughts.
00:59:52.680 --> 00:59:56.200
He follows the word of God.
It's not like he's confused,
00:59:56.920 --> 01:00:01.760
he doesn't cut it up
and twist it into something else.
01:00:01.920 --> 01:00:07.360
He just wants
the pure way of Islam in his life.
01:00:14.360 --> 01:00:18.200
CAROL: Fawad!
-Hello, how are you?
01:00:18.360 --> 01:00:21.080
CAROL: Salaam.
01:00:23.200 --> 01:00:25.520
What's going on? You having a visit?
01:00:28.360 --> 01:00:29.960
She was asking about you.
01:00:32.400 --> 01:00:34.000
Tell her I found it for her.
01:00:34.680 --> 01:00:36.040
Yes, I told her.
01:00:36.200 --> 01:00:40.680
CAROL: If it cost him money,
I want to give him the money.
01:00:40.840 --> 01:00:42.080
She wants to pay you for it!
01:00:42.840 --> 01:00:46.280
If I put a price on it, it would cost
the same as all of America.
01:00:46.440 --> 01:00:47.800
Don't say it like that.
01:00:47.960 --> 01:00:49.320
No, just tell her that.
01:00:49.480 --> 01:00:50.480
No, no.
01:00:51.320 --> 01:00:53.280
-Yes, you should tell her.
-No.
01:00:53.440 --> 01:00:55.760
Either I talk to her my way, or I go.
01:00:55.920 --> 01:00:57.560
You should say it the civilized way.
01:00:57.720 --> 01:00:59.680
It is civilized. It's not impolite.
01:00:59.840 --> 01:01:03.840
Sure, tell her
that this book is priceless.
01:01:11.600 --> 01:01:13.480
Tell her to treat it respectfully.
01:01:18.600 --> 01:01:21.160
CAROL: Oh God. We're screwed.
01:01:21.320 --> 01:01:23.880
You'll help me understand this...
01:01:24.040 --> 01:01:26.160
TRANSLATOR: Translated into English.
01:01:28.280 --> 01:01:30.960
This is the Holy Quran.
01:01:31.320 --> 01:01:33.440
It is the word of God.
01:01:35.200 --> 01:01:38.120
It's not just for us.
It is for all of humanity.
01:01:38.440 --> 01:01:42.960
So it must be kept respectfully.
01:01:43.800 --> 01:01:45.760
It is every human beings' guide.
01:01:59.000 --> 01:02:01.680
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Tell her to look at a page.
01:02:01.840 --> 01:02:05.600
TRANSLATOR: Open up
and look at one of the sheets.
01:02:05.760 --> 01:02:08.480
CAROL: Wow, that's beautiful.
01:02:08.640 --> 01:02:13.040
-So, I read it this way?
TRANSLATOR: Yeah.
01:02:18.280 --> 01:02:19.480
Thank you!
01:02:20.680 --> 01:02:24.880
Even a philosopher would not get it.
01:02:25.240 --> 01:02:27.840
One verse is as big as a city.
01:02:28.120 --> 01:02:33.320
You enter it and live in it.
01:02:36.160 --> 01:02:38.000
CAROL:
This is gonna take me some time.
01:02:38.680 --> 01:02:40.880
FAWAD: You need time.
01:02:41.680 --> 01:02:47.920
There are verses that are
very hard to understand.
01:02:48.360 --> 01:02:52.840
Some are as easy as a conversation.
01:02:53.000 --> 01:02:55.640
MAN: She can understand it.
01:02:56.000 --> 01:02:58.400
No, even scholars don't get it.
01:02:58.560 --> 01:03:02.400
It will take you a while to
understand what it says.
01:03:02.560 --> 01:03:04.000
Okay.
01:03:06.760 --> 01:03:09.920
Tashakor. Do you have something
I can wrap it in?
01:03:10.600 --> 01:03:13.240
Give her the scarf to wrap it in.
01:03:13.720 --> 01:03:14.760
CAROL: Thank you.
01:03:16.600 --> 01:03:17.880
(SPEAKING IN DARI) Wrap all three.
01:03:18.320 --> 01:03:21.600
No, this is good.
The Quran is honored.
01:03:24.360 --> 01:03:28.880
May God guide her.
It is not in our hands.
01:03:29.760 --> 01:03:35.400
Maybe this is what God intended,
for this to happen between us.
01:03:35.560 --> 01:03:39.760
Nothing, not a single leaf
moves without God's Will.
01:03:41.120 --> 01:03:43.360
Let's go Fawad. Get up brother.
01:04:04.280 --> 01:04:06.000
CAROL: You are praying?
01:04:06.160 --> 01:04:07.800
BIBI: Yes, I am praying.
01:04:09.040 --> 01:04:12.040
We will all die
and go to the eternal place.
01:04:12.560 --> 01:04:15.000
There will be a severe accounting.
01:04:15.600 --> 01:04:18.640
Be careful.
Once you are there you are done.
01:04:20.120 --> 01:04:24.160
This world is nothing. You see
how many people leave it every day?
01:04:24.960 --> 01:04:27.920
If you have regrets when you die,
it'll be useless,
01:04:28.080 --> 01:04:31.320
because life won't be
given back to you again.
01:04:37.080 --> 01:04:41.000
-Did Fawad give her the Quran?
-Yes, he gave her the Quran.
01:04:41.720 --> 01:04:45.440
Tell her not to throw it away
out of disrespect.
01:04:45.760 --> 01:04:48.120
It is very sinful to do so.
01:04:49.440 --> 01:04:51.640
CAROL:
How does one take care of a Quran?
01:04:51.920 --> 01:04:54.480
I don't know how to read the Quran,
01:04:54.800 --> 01:04:57.400
so I kiss it
and put it up in a high place.
01:04:59.960 --> 01:05:03.600
We keep the Quran with respect.
It is the words of the Almighty
01:05:03.880 --> 01:05:07.080
Tell her, so she does not step on it.
01:05:07.760 --> 01:05:11.960
If she presses her foot on it
while swearing, it's really sinful.
01:05:12.440 --> 01:05:13.920
They don't know this at all, right?
01:05:14.080 --> 01:05:17.040
CAROL: What is she saying?
Does she wants some tea or...?
01:05:18.280 --> 01:05:23.600
Here, pour some tea for her in this.
01:05:26.920 --> 01:05:28.800
(FAINT DIALOGUE FROM CAR RADIO)
01:05:41.120 --> 01:05:45.600
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
01:05:45.760 --> 01:05:47.080
We are going to Fahim's grave.
01:05:47.360 --> 01:05:49.640
That is it over there. Further up.
01:05:52.760 --> 01:05:55.480
The person who looks with honest eyes
01:05:56.720 --> 01:06:00.320
at the grandeur of creation
01:06:02.200 --> 01:06:08.840
and tries to understand
God's greatness, has wisdom.
01:06:09.400 --> 01:06:12.040
And you, lady,
01:06:12.200 --> 01:06:14.960
if you look once
via the gate of reason
01:06:15.320 --> 01:06:17.680
at the grandeur of existence
01:06:18.720 --> 01:06:22.240
and the changing of the seasons:
spring, summer, winter
01:06:22.880 --> 01:06:26.080
and the phases of the moon.
01:06:26.240 --> 01:06:28.240
Look with reason,
01:06:29.920 --> 01:06:33.920
and ponder it deeply and completely,
01:06:34.240 --> 01:06:37.520
you will appreciate
the command of the Word of God,
01:06:37.800 --> 01:06:41.560
the merciful, the source of
salvation. May peace be upon you.
01:06:41.720 --> 01:06:42.720
That's it.
01:07:05.360 --> 01:07:07.480
BORN APRIL 21, 1990 IN KABUL.
01:07:07.640 --> 01:07:12.000
ON THE 24TH NIGHT
OF THE HOLY MONTH OF RAMADAN
01:07:13.000 --> 01:07:18.600
HE WAS WOUNDED BY THE INFIDELS
AND LEFT THE WORLD IN 2008.
01:07:23.600 --> 01:07:26.400
He'd come out of the mosque
from Tarawih prayers.
01:07:26.800 --> 01:07:29.360
He'd come out of Tarawih.
01:07:29.600 --> 01:07:30.960
He wanted to...
01:07:31.440 --> 01:07:35.560
He'd gone to the shops to get jam.
I'd sent him.
01:07:35.880 --> 01:07:38.440
It was late
and the prayers were finished.
01:07:38.600 --> 01:07:40.080
He was in a state of purity.
01:07:40.480 --> 01:07:43.760
At that moment
an American convoy was passing by.
01:07:44.520 --> 01:07:48.360
The kids were playing
with firecrackers and they shot him,
01:07:48.720 --> 01:07:51.040
and the bus behind him.
01:07:55.320 --> 01:07:58.520
The pain during the 17 months
that he suffered...
01:08:01.120 --> 01:08:02.520
was unbearable.
01:08:05.920 --> 01:08:09.040
(DOG BARKING)
01:08:14.160 --> 01:08:17.040
(FIRECRACKERS POPPING)
01:08:17.200 --> 01:08:18.200
Good blast.
01:08:18.520 --> 01:08:20.560
Let's do one more in star formation.
01:08:23.640 --> 01:08:27.120
Wait, wait... You did it last time.
01:08:29.080 --> 01:08:32.640
Light up here.
Twenty will make a good blast!
01:08:32.800 --> 01:08:35.960
CAROL: Fahim was shot
on the last night of Ramadan,
01:08:36.120 --> 01:08:39.760
out celebrating with his friends
on a warm summer night.
01:08:39.920 --> 01:08:42.280
They were setting off firecrackers,
01:08:42.440 --> 01:08:45.120
while waiting for
the first slender crescent of moon
01:08:45.280 --> 01:08:47.240
to declare Ramadan over
01:08:47.400 --> 01:08:51.040
and begin the celebration
of Eid Al Fitr and the feasting.
01:08:52.920 --> 01:08:56.960
It was dark. No moon,
no streetlights on that road.
01:08:59.040 --> 01:09:02.440
It's not hard to imagine
that a soldier, far from home
01:09:02.600 --> 01:09:04.560
and not much older than Fahim,
01:09:04.720 --> 01:09:06.760
had been briefed
that they were travelling
01:09:06.920 --> 01:09:08.120
on a dangerous road
01:09:08.280 --> 01:09:09.800
at a volatile time.
01:09:10.800 --> 01:09:13.960
Given the distance, the darkness,
and the line of sight,
01:09:14.120 --> 01:09:17.320
it's unlikely that that soldier knew
they hit someone
01:09:19.600 --> 01:09:22.520
But in the end,
that's not what matters.
01:09:22.680 --> 01:09:25.600
Fahim was out
in front of his own house,
01:09:25.760 --> 01:09:27.240
in his own city,
01:09:27.400 --> 01:09:30.280
and he was shot and killed
by a foreign soldier
01:09:30.440 --> 01:09:33.920
who, like me,
was just passing through.
01:09:34.080 --> 01:09:37.080
(ACCELERATED VIOLIN MUSIC)
01:09:40.040 --> 01:09:44.320
One shot, one squeeze of a trigger...
01:09:44.480 --> 01:09:45.960
And then all this.
01:10:03.920 --> 01:10:06.280
(MUSIC FADES)
01:10:07.760 --> 01:10:12.560
BIBI: I think about him all the time.
My son.
01:10:14.360 --> 01:10:17.280
And then my daughter. It's too much.
01:10:18.680 --> 01:10:22.720
My daughter left
her children orphaned
01:10:22.960 --> 01:10:25.280
When I remember them
I feel like dying.
01:10:29.360 --> 01:10:32.840
He would ask me to kill him.
'What is this life?' he said.
01:11:10.080 --> 01:11:12.680
CAROL: All right.
01:11:19.480 --> 01:11:22.400
(GENTLE MUSIC)
01:11:24.320 --> 01:11:26.160
CAROL: Whenever I would go home,
01:11:26.320 --> 01:11:29.320
Bibi would bless me
and ask me for forgiveness.
01:11:29.480 --> 01:11:31.800
It was a traditional village ritual
01:11:31.960 --> 01:11:34.520
in case we never saw
each other again.
01:11:35.080 --> 01:11:37.000
There was never any way
to get in touch with her
01:11:37.160 --> 01:11:39.480
from the States, or her with me.
01:11:39.640 --> 01:11:42.360
We would not have known
if the other had died.
01:11:47.720 --> 01:11:52.880
-(GENTLE MUSIC)
-(INDISTINCT CONVERSATION)
01:11:59.240 --> 01:12:03.160
CAROL:
So I went back. How could I not?
01:12:03.960 --> 01:12:06.680
(LAUGHTER)
01:12:11.800 --> 01:12:16.160
CAROL: Look at you. How are you?
01:12:19.240 --> 01:12:22.320
(SPEAKING IN DARI) You didn't come!
Two years, such a long time.
01:12:22.480 --> 01:12:23.920
TRANSLATOR: It's been two years
since you last came.
01:12:24.080 --> 01:12:26.480
You haven't been here.
Where have you been?
01:12:27.040 --> 01:12:28.880
Where have you been
all these many days?
01:12:30.000 --> 01:12:31.280
Where were you?
01:12:32.480 --> 01:12:33.520
Come.
01:12:34.840 --> 01:12:36.440
BIBI: Why didn't you come earlier?
01:12:37.400 --> 01:12:40.160
CAROL: Oh my Lord, look at them!
01:12:40.800 --> 01:12:44.080
Last time you came a year ago.
I recognize you.
01:12:44.320 --> 01:12:46.280
TRANSLATOR:
He says you came last year.
01:12:48.520 --> 01:12:50.640
CAROL: You were very little.
01:12:50.800 --> 01:12:55.080
This is my grandchild, and this one.
All of them are my grandchildren.
01:12:56.320 --> 01:12:58.760
God bless you. Boys and girls.
01:12:59.320 --> 01:13:02.120
Bibi Haji?
How many grandchildren do you have?
01:13:02.680 --> 01:13:05.600
(SPEAKING IN DARI) I have,
in God's name, too many.
01:13:05.760 --> 01:13:07.040
TRANSLATOR: She said I've lost count.
01:13:07.200 --> 01:13:10.000
-How many?
-53.
01:13:10.160 --> 01:13:12.840
Both boys and girls.
From daughters and sons.
01:13:13.000 --> 01:13:15.080
TRANSLATOR: 53 grandchildren.
01:13:15.240 --> 01:13:18.840
CAROL: Mashallah.
01:13:19.000 --> 01:13:21.080
I wanted to ask her
how was Fawad's wedding?
01:13:21.320 --> 01:13:23.320
(SPEAKING IN DARI) She asks
how was Fawad's wedding?
01:13:23.480 --> 01:13:26.280
It was good. He got married.
01:13:27.240 --> 01:13:30.960
Put that down and eat.
Tell her to eat.
01:13:31.120 --> 01:13:32.320
Take it. Eat. Eat.
01:13:36.280 --> 01:13:38.840
TRANSLATOR:
Fawad has a little girl now.
01:13:39.000 --> 01:13:40.080
Yes. He has a daughter.
01:13:40.240 --> 01:13:42.680
CAROL: So is he better
now that he's married?
01:13:43.320 --> 01:13:44.920
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Has he calmed down?
01:13:45.360 --> 01:13:47.080
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
He got worse. Tell her.
01:13:47.240 --> 01:13:50.440
TRANSLATOR: No, he is worse.
-(LAUGHTER)
01:13:51.480 --> 01:13:53.800
CAROL: Worse to you or to his wife?
01:13:54.760 --> 01:13:56.760
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Worse to you or to his wife?
01:13:58.600 --> 01:14:00.160
He is with me.
01:14:01.160 --> 01:14:03.840
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
He's disrespectful.
01:14:04.000 --> 01:14:07.760
TRANSLATOR: He is disrespectful,
incredibly disrespectful.
01:14:09.520 --> 01:14:16.280
She says inshallah his faith
will improve him.
01:14:17.400 --> 01:14:19.400
Yes, God is patient
01:14:20.400 --> 01:14:23.760
(SPEAKING IN DARI) So,
have you settled? You did not marry?
01:14:23.920 --> 01:14:26.240
TRANSLATOR: So you're there
and you haven't gotten married?
01:14:28.040 --> 01:14:31.000
You're young and you're beautiful,
how come you didn't get married?
01:14:31.160 --> 01:14:32.640
CAROL:
You are young and you are beautiful,
01:14:32.800 --> 01:14:34.280
how come you didn't get married?
01:14:34.440 --> 01:14:36.760
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
She said you're young and beautiful.
01:14:36.920 --> 01:14:38.520
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
How come you didn't get married?
01:14:38.680 --> 01:14:41.080
Should I marry again? Look at this.
01:14:43.280 --> 01:14:45.920
I have a proper school to run, 53!
01:14:46.480 --> 01:14:48.920
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
If you just had two.
01:14:49.080 --> 01:14:51.280
TRANSLATOR: You should have two.
01:14:53.080 --> 01:14:54.680
CAROL: I have the world!
01:14:54.840 --> 01:15:00.720
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
She says she has the world.
01:15:00.880 --> 01:15:03.000
CAROL: This is why I am here.
01:15:03.160 --> 01:15:05.560
(CHILD BABBLING)
01:15:09.000 --> 01:15:10.520
(SPEAKING IN DARI) She says
that is why she comes to Afghanistan.
01:15:10.680 --> 01:15:12.160
(GENTLE MUSIC)
01:15:16.360 --> 01:15:18.520
Go inside. You don't have jackets.
01:15:18.680 --> 01:15:21.040
How many grandchildren are here?
01:15:22.640 --> 01:15:24.880
Only hers. She did not count.
01:15:57.680 --> 01:16:00.040
She says,
'That's me when I was younger.'
01:16:03.000 --> 01:16:05.200
I'd also like to see her
in her youth.
01:16:06.360 --> 01:16:09.680
You are still young. She's young.
01:16:10.240 --> 01:16:13.000
When Fawad comes
he won't shake her hand.
01:16:18.200 --> 01:16:22.160
So is it just your brother
who is so religious?
01:16:22.520 --> 01:16:23.840
No, all of us are religious.
01:16:24.400 --> 01:16:28.320
I am religious but
I don't try to convert others.
01:16:28.480 --> 01:16:30.680
That is not religion,
it's a sickness.
01:16:31.560 --> 01:16:36.240
A religious person is... someone
who respects God and his Prophets.
01:16:36.880 --> 01:16:39.720
You do not harm people
and you don't lie.
01:16:40.280 --> 01:16:43.520
There is a difference.
There is no need to convert people.
01:16:44.080 --> 01:16:45.120
Eat it.
01:16:46.000 --> 01:16:47.560
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Tell her that whatever he says,
01:16:47.720 --> 01:16:52.480
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
just accept it, say okay.
01:16:53.360 --> 01:16:57.280
(SPEAKING IN DARI) If you realize
the answer will offend him.
01:16:57.440 --> 01:17:00.120
Whatever he says, just say "okay".
01:17:02.520 --> 01:17:06.840
(INDISTINCT CONVERSATION)
01:17:07.000 --> 01:17:09.600
CAROL: How are you?
01:17:09.760 --> 01:17:11.520
I'm fine. And you?
01:17:11.680 --> 01:17:15.040
CAROL: Congratulations
on your beautiful daughter.
01:17:15.200 --> 01:17:16.800
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
01:17:16.960 --> 01:17:18.080
TRANSLATOR: Thank you, thank you.
01:17:18.240 --> 01:17:20.640
CAROL: How have you been
since I last saw you?
01:17:20.800 --> 01:17:23.440
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
01:17:23.600 --> 01:17:25.240
TRANSLATOR: I have been very well.
01:17:25.480 --> 01:17:31.000
TRANSLATOR: She is working hard
on finishing this movie.
01:17:31.160 --> 01:17:33.840
I see. It's a money game, no?
01:17:34.240 --> 01:17:37.320
Life flies by
in that game of chasing money.
01:17:37.480 --> 01:17:41.120
TRANSLATOR:
He says... Life is like a game.
01:17:41.280 --> 01:17:43.160
BIBI: She didn't get married.
01:17:49.160 --> 01:17:50.600
CAROL: What does that mean?
01:17:50.760 --> 01:17:54.040
(SPEAKING IN DARI) She asks
what does that mean, 'a game'?
01:17:54.600 --> 01:17:57.080
Tell her there is
no meaning behind it.
01:17:58.840 --> 01:18:00.920
She's been reading the Quran.
01:18:04.600 --> 01:18:07.800
Tell her our God is one God.
Ask her why we were created?
01:18:07.960 --> 01:18:09.520
Does she have an idea why?
01:18:09.680 --> 01:18:12.600
CAROL: You gave me
a very beautiful gift,
01:18:13.040 --> 01:18:15.200
when I was last here.
01:18:15.840 --> 01:18:19.920
Tell her the Quran is the truth.
01:18:20.080 --> 01:18:22.480
It's from God.
01:18:22.640 --> 01:18:24.080
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
If you could let her finish.
01:18:24.240 --> 01:18:25.240
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
Please finish the thought.
01:18:25.400 --> 01:18:26.640
TRANSLATOR: He's saying
'Let her finish what she's saying'.
01:18:26.800 --> 01:18:29.360
It's okay, he can be who he is.
01:18:30.520 --> 01:18:35.000
CAROL: It is a very big, deep book.
01:18:35.160 --> 01:18:37.400
I have begun to read it.
01:18:37.560 --> 01:18:40.440
But it is not easy for me
to understand.
01:18:41.000 --> 01:18:44.600
I am a Muslim
and I haven't finished the Holy Book.
01:18:44.880 --> 01:18:48.520
You read half of it, its truth,
01:18:48.680 --> 01:18:52.920
and you haven't declared your faith?
Maybe it's too late for you.
01:18:53.800 --> 01:18:55.640
It's not God's will.
01:18:56.640 --> 01:19:02.680
CAROL: It was God's will, that I,
by complete chance,
01:19:02.840 --> 01:19:07.840
ended up in the hospital room
with you and your brothers.
01:19:08.760 --> 01:19:15.360
And that's why
she's been working for six years,
01:19:15.600 --> 01:19:21.240
to tell what happened
to you and your family.
01:19:21.800 --> 01:19:24.920
CAROL: God's will. Here I am.
01:19:26.480 --> 01:19:29.520
Tell her everything is God's will.
01:19:29.920 --> 01:19:33.320
But tell her
there are two forces on this earth.
01:19:33.480 --> 01:19:39.760
One is Satan's. One is God's.
01:19:40.040 --> 01:19:43.080
And these two are always in conflict.
01:19:43.240 --> 01:19:44.640
Truth and Falsehood.
01:19:46.240 --> 01:19:50.960
The Quran says these two
are always in conflict on this earth,
01:19:51.120 --> 01:19:54.960
those who believe in God and Muhammad
01:19:55.200 --> 01:19:58.120
and those who belong to Satan.
01:19:59.320 --> 01:20:05.800
The people who do not believe in God
and our Prophet are unbelievers.
01:20:06.440 --> 01:20:07.560
The book says,
01:20:08.480 --> 01:20:12.480
you who don't pray, are infidels.
01:20:12.640 --> 01:20:15.600
These are for you. Please eat these.
01:20:15.760 --> 01:20:19.040
You're talking too much.
Bring them closer to you.
01:20:19.840 --> 01:20:20.880
Take it and eat.
01:20:21.440 --> 01:20:23.040
Mother, this is
a serious conversation.
01:20:23.200 --> 01:20:24.600
Don't make a joke out of it...
01:20:28.280 --> 01:20:31.360
You destroyed my life.
What do we have left now?
01:20:32.760 --> 01:20:34.240
Just tidy up. Okay?
01:20:34.400 --> 01:20:36.640
Your father wouldn't believe this.
01:20:36.800 --> 01:20:38.760
Go, go move someplace else.
01:20:38.920 --> 01:20:41.200
Don't live with me.
I swear I don't like you.
01:20:42.880 --> 01:20:45.040
I can't even breathe anymore.
01:20:47.840 --> 01:20:50.160
Give it to them.
01:20:50.880 --> 01:20:52.600
Here.
01:20:54.400 --> 01:20:56.800
(TENSE MUSIC)
01:22:04.720 --> 01:22:07.240
That is Fahim in Turkey.
01:22:08.760 --> 01:22:10.800
CAROL: Is that you with him?
NADIR: Yeah.
01:22:11.040 --> 01:22:14.160
CAROL: Was that his first time
out of Afghanistan?
01:22:14.320 --> 01:22:17.520
TRANSLATOR: Was that the first time
he traveled outside of Afghanistan?
01:22:17.760 --> 01:22:23.840
BIBI: Fawad was a wrestler.
He traveled to several countries.
01:22:24.080 --> 01:22:28.360
Fawad was the top wrestler
in Afghanistan.
01:22:28.600 --> 01:22:34.600
He competed in 2004
at the Olympics in Greece.
01:22:34.760 --> 01:22:39.960
TRANSLATOR: Wow, Fawad represented
Afghanistan in 2004 in Athens,
01:22:41.240 --> 01:22:43.320
in a wrestling competition.
01:22:45.280 --> 01:22:50.640
CAROL: Because,
when I saw him in the hospital...
01:22:50.920 --> 01:22:55.160
he seemed like a young man,
very strong, very solid.
01:22:55.720 --> 01:22:59.800
(SPEAKING IN DARI) He was broken
by what happened to his brother.
01:22:59.960 --> 01:23:01.600
TRANSLATOR:
What happened with his brother
01:23:01.760 --> 01:23:03.640
really had an impact on him.
01:23:03.800 --> 01:23:05.000
It affected him badly.
01:23:05.160 --> 01:23:10.880
CAROL: But how did you see the effect
on him from Turkey and from...
01:23:12.440 --> 01:23:13.680
He was in deep grief,
01:23:14.600 --> 01:23:16.600
when he was with him.
01:23:17.000 --> 01:23:18.960
He was alone. He was all alone.
01:23:19.120 --> 01:23:24.040
When he saw me, he sobbed in my arms.
01:23:25.640 --> 01:23:29.800
He was alone.
He had to be with Fahim every moment.
01:23:32.040 --> 01:23:36.280
He was glad I came. Very relieved.
01:23:36.440 --> 01:23:40.280
He hadn't slept for three nights.
01:23:40.960 --> 01:23:44.960
I was about to leave
and saw he was falling asleep.
01:23:45.120 --> 01:23:46.840
He had to be with Fahim all the time.
01:23:48.320 --> 01:23:53.080
So I told him to go and sleep.
He went to the hotel to rest.
01:23:53.240 --> 01:23:55.280
I stayed up with Fahim
for two nights.
01:23:55.440 --> 01:23:58.280
When he came back, he looked rested.
01:23:59.120 --> 01:24:02.440
CAROL: Yeah, Fahim was lucky
to have such good brothers.
01:24:02.600 --> 01:24:04.320
Thank you.
01:24:04.480 --> 01:24:06.240
CAROL: Who could come for him...
01:24:08.000 --> 01:24:10.440
Fahim. What luck did he have.
01:24:12.320 --> 01:24:16.000
I know. I know.
But how was he lucky, the poor boy.
01:24:17.960 --> 01:24:22.240
CAROL: Well you can have bad luck,
and you can have worse bad luck,
01:24:22.760 --> 01:24:25.400
but he was with people who loved him,
that's something.
01:24:25.560 --> 01:24:28.840
(SPEAKING IN DARI) She said
he was with people who loved him.
01:24:29.000 --> 01:24:31.160
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
His brothers.
01:24:42.120 --> 01:24:46.760
CAROL: Yeah, I just want to be sure
that when people see this movie,
01:24:46.920 --> 01:24:49.080
they understand Fawad a little bit,
01:24:49.240 --> 01:24:53.200
so he doesn't make them think
bad things, you know.
01:24:53.360 --> 01:24:56.160
He worries me.
I am worried about him.
01:24:57.120 --> 01:25:00.160
(SPEAKING IN DARI) She says
she just wants to be sure
01:25:00.320 --> 01:25:01.720
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
that when people watch this film,
01:25:02.080 --> 01:25:04.640
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
they understand Fawad
01:25:04.800 --> 01:25:06.560
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
and don't think he's bad.
01:25:06.720 --> 01:25:09.520
(SPEAKING IN DARI) That's right.
It will be just like that.
01:25:25.160 --> 01:25:28.080
Does the food taste so bad?
Why don't you eat it?
01:25:28.240 --> 01:25:29.720
It's good. It's good.
01:25:33.640 --> 01:25:35.400
CAROL: Thank you.
01:25:39.080 --> 01:25:41.600
Take the camera away so she can eat.
01:25:43.640 --> 01:25:45.480
(SPEAKING IN DARI)
It's because I love you.
01:25:45.640 --> 01:25:47.640
(TRANSLATOR TRANSLATES)
01:25:47.800 --> 01:25:51.680
"Dosta" Is that right? "Dosta"
01:25:51.840 --> 01:25:53.680
I love you. I love you.
01:25:54.760 --> 01:25:56.720
You're leaving?
01:26:05.560 --> 01:26:06.920
CAROL: You take care of yourself.
01:26:07.080 --> 01:26:08.720
-Forgive me.
-Forgive me, too.
01:26:08.880 --> 01:26:11.240
Stay there so I can take a picture.
01:26:14.200 --> 01:26:17.720
(GENTLE MUSIC)
01:26:36.720 --> 01:26:40.480
CAROL: I wish I could end
this movie here. But I can't.
01:26:43.960 --> 01:26:46.360
I visited Kabul
until the last and final
01:26:46.520 --> 01:26:49.480
of many drawdowns
actually took place.
01:26:51.080 --> 01:26:53.680
America left
with much of NATO behind it
01:26:53.840 --> 01:26:56.160
and the Taliban began to move.
01:26:56.480 --> 01:26:59.480
(HELICOPTER BLADES)
01:27:05.120 --> 01:27:07.560
Covid had hit Kabul hard.
01:27:11.120 --> 01:27:13.280
Nadir called me from Germany.
01:27:14.960 --> 01:27:18.160
I managed to wire them some money
to pay for her Oxygen.
01:27:18.320 --> 01:27:19.800
And she did get better.
01:27:28.880 --> 01:27:30.800
NADIR: Hello, Carol.
01:27:30.960 --> 01:27:32.600
(SOBBING)
01:27:36.400 --> 01:27:38.800
My mother is dead.
01:27:38.960 --> 01:27:41.920
CAROL: Nadir!
01:27:43.480 --> 01:27:45.720
(BIRDS CHATTERING)
01:27:53.680 --> 01:27:58.600
CAROL: A month later, the Taliban
surrounded and then entered Kabul.
01:28:01.480 --> 01:28:03.160
Fully bearded Talibs were greeted
01:28:03.320 --> 01:28:06.160
by local men
with just a month's growth of beard.
01:28:07.720 --> 01:28:10.440
Bibi's son Fawad
was not one of these.
01:28:10.960 --> 01:28:15.920
He's a devout Muslim
but that does not make him a Talib.
01:28:24.360 --> 01:28:28.120
After the takeover women's faces
began to disappear from the s shops,
01:28:29.480 --> 01:28:31.600
the Bollywood stars,
the models and the adverts,
01:28:31.760 --> 01:28:34.000
painted over or removed.
01:28:37.160 --> 01:28:40.320
Once again, Kabul went back
to being a city full of men
01:28:40.480 --> 01:28:42.160
telling women their time was up,
01:28:43.440 --> 01:28:47.240
leave public life,
get off the streets.
01:28:47.400 --> 01:28:49.800
The struggle begins again...
01:28:57.880 --> 01:29:00.680
I don't think Bibi
would have been surprised.
01:29:06.440 --> 01:29:09.680
Fahim would have been 31.
01:29:33.760 --> 01:29:35.480
(MUSIC STOPS)
01:29:35.640 --> 01:29:37.600
(KIDS SHOUTING)
01:29:39.520 --> 01:29:41.720
(GENTLE MUSIC)
