Cheap, easy to get, and highly addictive, crystal meth has become the drug of choice in North American small towns, not only for teenagers, but for younger kids as well. This provocative film issues a stark warning to young people of all ages, but is especially aimed at those pre-teens and younger children who might be influenced by older kids to 'experiment.' The program opens with young children talking about what they'd like to be when they grow up, but quickly cuts to an increasingly disturbing series of young and not so young addicts describing what they had wanted to do with their lives before they got hooked. There are interviews with older meth users who have lost jobs, homes, families and in one case even limbs because of their drug abuse. Some of the scenes shown are very graphic.
A plain-talking physician explains the mental and physical changes meth can cause; he talks about all the things our brain enables us to do and asks 'What part of your brain would you like to do without?' Engaging classroom scenes show students learning and practicing ways of dealing with peer pressure, including 'refusal skills,' expressing the film's overall message that 'you have a choice.'

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.999
[music]
00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:09.999
Do you want to come over here and
give us a short interview for kids
00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:14.999
to stay off drugs? Not really, yo!
Seriously.
00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:19.999
[music] When I grow up I want to be
00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:24.999
an aesthetician. When I grow up I
want to be a magician. When I grow up
00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:29.999
I want to be a basketball player. I want to be
a geologist. I want to be a teacher. A pianist
00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:34.999
and an architect. A want to be a nurse. Surgeon
Fashion designer. I want to be a veterinarian
00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:39.999
when I grow up. I want to be a horse rider.
I want to be a policeman when I grow up.
00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:44.999
An animal trainer. A mechanic. A doctor.
Music teacher. I want to be a famous
00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:49.999
singer. When I was younger
I wanted to be an acrobat
00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:54.999
and instead I chose to do drugs.
My dream job when I was
00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:59.999
a kid was following my father,
becoming a cook. I really wanted to
00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.999
be a fireman but I got into drugs when
I was young and I\'ve been addicted
00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:09.999
since. What are drugs? What are drugs?
00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.999
[music] Drugs are death, slow suicide.
Owwww! Ow! (inaudible)
00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:19.999
go!
00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.999
It\'s hard to remember sometimes you\'re looking at a patient or
a person that, that\'s tied up like an animal that\'s, that\'s
00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:29.999
screaming and swearing at you to
remember that once they, they had dreams
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:34.999
and they had plans. They had things that they
were going to be and do. And they\'ve lost
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:39.999
it all. Drugs are something
put on this earth
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:44.999
to m-, to uh, make it hell
on earth for the people that
00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:49.999
choose to follow them.
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:58.000
[music]
00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:04.999
This year we\'re going to be talking about drug
use. So one of the things that is often a
00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:09.999
surprise for people is that I use drugs.
The reason I take drugs is because I
00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:14.999
get migraine headaches and if I didn\'t take drugs
I wouldn\'t have quality of life. There are many,
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:19.999
many reasons why people use drugs. So what are we
talking about here today? Are we talking about
00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.999
that kind of drug use or are we talking about another
kind of drug use? We\'re talking about street
00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:29.999
drugs and the inappropriate use of some legal
drugs. We\'re really talking about substance
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:34.999
abuse, aren\'t we? Now with crystal meth that
has become a very common drug. How many of you
00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:39.999
have heard that term before, crystal meth?
My girlfriend, she opted for crystal
00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:44.999
meth. At 28 she lit herself on fire
thinking there were bugs all over her
00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:49.999
and burned herself to death. What is crystal
meth? What\'s crystal meth? What\'s crystal meth?
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.999
Crystal meth is a very dangerous and horrible
drug. Everything about crystal methamphetamine
00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:59.999
is bad. I, I think it\'s the, the, the,
the drug of the devil. It really is.
00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:08.000
[music] (inaudible)
00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:20.000
Not really, no. Seriously.(inaudible)
00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:29.999
All kinds of effects of
drugs like crystal meth.
00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:34.999
We see the people whose lives are ruined.
They are crazy. They\'re tied
00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:39.999
down. They are scarred for life.
I shot myself in the head.
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.999
I got run over by a train.
I tried to kill myself
00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:49.999
by using drugs. I went from
doing uh, going from nights
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:54.999
of bartending and then waiting tables to
doing uh, lines of coke for a few hours,
00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:59.999
to uh, doing crystal meth
for two, three days.
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:04.999
It screws up your mind and your body.
I\'ve seen people get very violent on it.
00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:13.000
[music]
00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:19.999
Once I did like my first shot of dope
I was pretty much screwed for life.
00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:24.999
They smoke it. They snort it. They, they
ingest it. They inject it. They do whatever.
00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:29.999
It steals a lot of things. It steals your
soul. It\'s almost like living in hell.
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:34.999
It puts you on hold. It stops you from
your goals. These group of guys came up to
00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:39.999
both of us actually and they asked us
if we tried crystal meth once or if
00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:44.999
we had any on us and we obviously,
not, right? So we told them
00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:49.999
no, like why would we do that? And they\'re like oh,
well we have some do you want to do it with us?
00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:54.999
And we\'re like no, like that\'s the dumbest thing
to do. And so we just told them to get away.
00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:59.999
Okay, choose your career.
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:04.999
Cool, I\'m an artist.
00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:09.999
One. Whoa, I get to collect $60,000.
00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:14.999
Cool. 60? My turn?
00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:19.999
Yep. Three.
00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.999
You get a life card.
00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.999
This is not a game. This is
your life and I\'m telling you
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.999
it is the worst possible life
that you could possibly imagine.
00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:39.999
It\'s not a game. It\'s a trap
and it keeps you trapped.
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:44.999
Drugs is not a game. Drugs
is not cool at all.
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:49.999
It, it doesn\'t make you cool. It never made
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.999
me cool. Drugs ruined my life.
00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.999
Scientists have done studies that show that drugs
like crystal meth can actually cause you to lose
00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:04.999
part of your brain. You have to remember, you use
your brain for everything that you do, day to day.
00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:09.999
You use it to walk, to talk. You use it to
use your computer. You use it to watch TV.
00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:14.999
You use it to eat, to go to school.
You use some to
00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:19.999
play outside. And you have to ask yourself if
you\'re going to use drugs like crystal meth
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:24.999
what part of your brain would
you like to do without?
00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.999
Hey. Hey! Hey!
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:34.999
Oh I got to put my (inaudible) Hey! Hello.
00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:39.999
There is a look to any chronic drug user.
You, you can tell fairly quickly when
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.999
somebody has a significant drug habit.
And there\'s a lot of factors that
00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.999
go into that. I mean there\'s, there\'s certain physical
deterioration. They don\'t look after themselves.
00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:54.999
Uh, there may be, because of the mental deterioration,
they don\'t clean themselves. They don\'t
00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:59.999
look after their teeth. There are actually chemical
changes, biochemical changes that take place typically with
00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:04.999
crystal meth users, where their teeth
rot, become discolored, look horrible.
00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:09.999
Crystal meth wrecks the enamel
on your teeth. And they
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:14.999
look real good for picture shoots.
I\'ve had an abscess
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:19.999
and it was really gross and
I had a band-aid over it
00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:24.999
but like band-aid didn\'t really do anything
\'cause what happens is it gets this
00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:29.999
pus and it just, when it\'s ready, oozes.
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:34.999
Keeps oozing out of you. So you\'re
this kid walking outside of
00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:39.999
your school and this fellow comes up to you and
says hey, I\'ve got some crystal meth. What
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.999
are some of the things that you can possibly
do to refuse? In other words what are refusal
00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:49.999
skills that you can use? You have a choice. You
have a choice not to become a victim. You have
00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:54.999
a choice not to lose your, your life and your
future and your dreams. And you have to make
00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:59.999
that choice and say, I\'m not going to touch it. I\'m not
going to use crystal meth. I\'m not going to use drugs.
00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.999
No thank you. I would like to use my brain
for the rest of my life., No thanks.
00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:09.999
I have better things to do than to do crystal
meth. No thanks. I don\'t do Drano. No thank you.
00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:14.999
No thank you. Don\'t do drugs.
Don\'t even try \'em.
00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:19.999
You know, one time is too many, okay?
00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:24.999
Just because you\'re from a small town doesn\'t
mean you won\'t become addicted to crystal meth.
00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:29.999
And once you become addicted to crystal meth it may take
you places you never, ever thought you would end up.
00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:34.999
It may make you do things you never, ever thought
you would do. Everyone should be warned uh,
00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:39.999
on uh, Easter Sunday I, I
jumped out of my window.
00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:48.000
[music] My first time I
was offered any kind
00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:54.999
of drug was actually in, right when I got into
high school. I uh, didn\'t really know anyone yet
00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.999
so I kinda felt like it might have been the right
thing to do maybe to get to know people. But uh,
00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:04.999
I ended up saying no and I\'m glad I did
because from what I hear once you tr-,
00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:09.999
once you try it, you\'re hooked and like that wouldn\'t
have fit the lifestyle that I want for myself. So
00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:14.999
it was better that I didn\'t do it so I didn\'t. If
somebody comes up to you and says hey, want to try some
00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:19.999
speed, like, no, just don\'t. And I
will get asked while I\'m going home
00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:24.999
, while I\'m playing basketball, like I go to the tournaments and
this guy sitting in the bleacher is asking oh, you want to go
00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:29.999
you know, let\'s do this. But I\'ll give it to you for
free. You see friends asking you, I mean, it\'s just a
00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:34.999
obvious answer. You can\'t, you just gotta
say no. The best way is just to say
00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:39.999
no and just tell them to leave you alone.
That\'s what I did.
00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:44.999
I\'ve been approached a lot, but it, for me
it\'s easy to say no because it just comes
00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:49.999
naturally. I have self-respect and so
I can say no. Just don\'t do drugs.
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:54.999
People that tell you not to do drugs
are the people that love you.
00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:59.999
People that tell you do do drugs and to try it, and
it\'s not gonna hurt you, those are people that
00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:04.999
don\'t care. Losing a leg and an arm
00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:09.999
that\'s bad.
00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:14.999
[sil.] I want to be an
acrobat when I grow up.
00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:20.000
[music]
