Where do we draw the line between love and devotion? An intimate and haunting portrayal of a quest for love and acceptance at any cost, Q depicts the insidious influence of a secretive matriarchal religious order in Lebanon on three generations of women in the Chehab family. Filmmaker Jude Chehab potently documents the unspoken ties and consequences of loyalty that have bonded her mother, grandmother, and herself to the mysterious organization. A masterful portrait of the toll that decades of unrequited love, lost hope, abuse, and despair takes on a person, Q is a multigenerational tale of the eternal search for meaning. A love story of a different kind, this documentary delicately portrays the complexities of unseen power that intermesh the lives of those who love a woman whose heart is in the hands of someone else.

00:00:02.544 --> 00:00:04.338
[crackling]
00:00:04.421 --> 00:00:05.714
[bird squawks softly]
00:00:10.636 --> 00:00:13.347
-[film popping]
-[projector clicking, whirring]
00:00:23.982 --> 00:00:27.277
[faint, dull rumbling]
00:00:27.361 --> 00:00:28.862
[soft clattering]
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:34.993
[one faint, echoing drum beat]
00:00:38.956 --> 00:00:40.666
[slightly louder drum beat]
00:00:45.212 --> 00:00:47.005
[slightly louder drum beat]
00:00:50.217 --> 00:00:52.302
[slightly louder drum beat]
00:00:56.807 --> 00:01:00.143
[filmmaker] When I was young, I had
this dream that would repeat itself.
00:01:02.312 --> 00:01:03.981
I was lost in an open field
00:01:04.064 --> 00:01:06.608
and from a distance I would see
a figure standing there.
00:01:08.068 --> 00:01:11.321
She had long black hair
and I knew that hair.
00:01:11.822 --> 00:01:13.198
That was my mother's hair.
00:01:14.074 --> 00:01:16.076
I would run to her screaming, "Mama!"
00:01:16.785 --> 00:01:18.537
And as she'd turn around,
00:01:19.538 --> 00:01:21.248
I'd see a frightening face.
00:01:22.165 --> 00:01:23.584
It wasn't her face.
00:01:25.043 --> 00:01:26.128
It wasn't her.
00:01:27.045 --> 00:01:29.006
The dream would repeat itself,
00:01:29.631 --> 00:01:33.594
and time after time,
my call out to her became fainter,
00:01:34.845 --> 00:01:36.430
as I would remember the face
00:01:36.513 --> 00:01:38.307
and I knew what was to come.
00:01:41.560 --> 00:01:43.395
[loud, ominous drum beat echoes]
00:01:44.104 --> 00:01:45.272
Mama!
00:01:48.609 --> 00:01:49.985
Mama!
00:01:54.072 --> 00:01:56.033
[ominous drum beat echoes]
00:01:57.284 --> 00:01:59.161
[ominous drum beat echoes]
00:02:00.579 --> 00:02:02.623
[filmmaker in Arabic]
00:02:10.964 --> 00:02:11.882
Hmm?
00:02:27.981 --> 00:02:29.983
[rustling]
00:02:44.706 --> 00:02:47.084
[paper rustling]
00:02:48.001 --> 00:02:49.670
[filmmaker]
00:04:01.325 --> 00:04:02.284
[sighs softly]
00:04:03.994 --> 00:04:06.413
[filmmaker]
00:04:15.130 --> 00:04:18.133
[filmmaker]
00:04:23.931 --> 00:04:26.433
[filmmaker]
00:04:36.610 --> 00:04:38.946
[filmmaker]
00:04:47.496 --> 00:04:50.082
[applause]
00:04:51.917 --> 00:04:54.461
[soft, dramatic music playing]
00:05:21.989 --> 00:05:23.907
[man 1 in French]
00:05:25.784 --> 00:05:27.619
[man 2 in French]
00:05:29.746 --> 00:05:32.958
[man 1]
00:05:33.041 --> 00:05:35.919
[dramatic music continues]
00:05:41.091 --> 00:05:43.635
[footsteps]
00:05:51.935 --> 00:05:55.022
[reading the Quran aloud]
00:06:14.666 --> 00:06:16.293
[indistinct chatter nearby]
00:06:16.376 --> 00:06:18.754
[birds chirping]
00:06:26.178 --> 00:06:27.429
[loud crack]
00:06:29.097 --> 00:06:30.891
[chatter continues]
00:06:40.776 --> 00:06:42.486
[clattering]
00:06:56.208 --> 00:06:57.042
Dakkou!
00:06:57.876 --> 00:06:58.794
Dakkou!
00:07:59.479 --> 00:08:00.939
[filmmaker]
00:08:08.030 --> 00:08:10.073
[birds chirping]
00:08:18.957 --> 00:08:19.958
Ah.
00:08:27.174 --> 00:08:29.009
[water pattering softly]
00:08:29.092 --> 00:08:30.469
[child shouts indistinctly]
00:08:30.552 --> 00:08:32.221
[indistinct chatter nearby]
00:08:38.894 --> 00:08:41.980
[gentle music playing]
00:08:50.405 --> 00:08:51.448
[door opens]
00:08:53.659 --> 00:08:55.118
[keys jingling]
00:09:01.708 --> 00:09:07.339
[in English] Now, we moved
from policy sciences to public policy.
00:09:07.422 --> 00:09:12.761
And this is his famous,
famous definition of what policy is.
00:09:12.845 --> 00:09:16.306
He said policy is who gets what.
00:09:16.390 --> 00:09:17.683
That's what policy is.
00:09:18.767 --> 00:09:20.102
Who gets what!
00:09:21.395 --> 00:09:25.524
And I add to it usually,
who gets what when and why.
00:09:28.652 --> 00:09:31.446
...because the log was an analysis.
00:09:31.530 --> 00:09:33.907
[continues indistinctly]
00:09:33.991 --> 00:09:35.951
[gentle, dramatic music playing]
00:09:50.465 --> 00:09:52.926
[roar of wind and crashing waves]
00:09:55.971 --> 00:09:58.515
[singing indistinctly]
00:10:13.322 --> 00:10:15.532
[Hiba in Arabic]
00:10:16.909 --> 00:10:18.785
[filmmaker]
00:11:11.213 --> 00:11:13.257
[in English]
00:11:19.513 --> 00:11:21.974
-[waves crashing]
-[wind blowing]
00:11:41.618 --> 00:11:42.995
[Hiba in Arabic]
00:12:07.978 --> 00:12:10.439
[cell phone ringtone playing]
00:12:18.697 --> 00:12:20.240
[muffled response on phone]
00:12:20.324 --> 00:12:24.745
[Hiba]
00:12:24.828 --> 00:12:26.914
[man on phone continues indistinctly]
00:12:27.623 --> 00:12:28.624
[Hiba softly exclaims]
00:12:31.460 --> 00:12:36.298
[Hiba]
00:13:07.246 --> 00:13:10.040
-[traffic humming, honking]
-[wings flapping softly]
00:13:22.469 --> 00:13:25.389
[filmmaker]
00:13:28.851 --> 00:13:30.185
[Hiba]
00:14:20.235 --> 00:14:22.070
[fluttering softly]
00:14:26.533 --> 00:14:28.619
[Hiba]
00:14:32.497 --> 00:14:33.582
[door closes]
00:14:39.880 --> 00:14:40.714
[beep]
00:14:50.474 --> 00:14:52.559
[filmmaker]
00:14:53.435 --> 00:14:55.938
[indistinct chatter nearby]
00:15:01.318 --> 00:15:03.737
[Hiba]
00:15:06.156 --> 00:15:07.616
[woman]
00:15:07.699 --> 00:15:10.244
[Hiba]
00:15:42.442 --> 00:15:45.696
[in English]
00:15:46.196 --> 00:15:48.740
[woman singing in Arabic]
00:16:00.711 --> 00:16:03.964
-[upbeat music playing]
-[clapping rhythmically]
00:16:10.971 --> 00:16:14.099
[gentle, dramatic music playing]
00:16:35.996 --> 00:16:40.125
[Hiba in Arabic]
00:17:05.067 --> 00:17:07.945
[gentle, dramatic music playing]
00:17:17.412 --> 00:17:18.997
[music fades out]
00:17:19.081 --> 00:17:20.374
[echoing slam]
00:17:22.626 --> 00:17:24.586
[keys jangling]
00:17:26.630 --> 00:17:28.340
[Hiba]
00:17:34.972 --> 00:17:36.765
[Jude]
00:17:47.693 --> 00:17:49.152
[Jude]
00:17:55.367 --> 00:17:56.493
[Jude]
00:18:14.178 --> 00:18:15.721
[Jude]
00:18:25.731 --> 00:18:27.399
[in English] She looks so beautiful.
00:18:27.482 --> 00:18:31.028
[in Arabic]
00:18:31.111 --> 00:18:33.113
[ominous, echoing drum beat]
00:18:33.197 --> 00:18:35.574
[Jude]
00:18:44.082 --> 00:18:45.334
[Hiba]
00:18:46.502 --> 00:18:48.420
[Jude]
00:18:59.139 --> 00:19:00.933
[Jude]
00:19:16.031 --> 00:19:17.824
[Jude]
00:19:31.421 --> 00:19:32.714
[ominous, echoing drum beat]
00:19:43.767 --> 00:19:44.601
[echoing drum beat]
00:19:44.685 --> 00:19:46.144
[Jude in English] What do you feel?
00:19:47.020 --> 00:19:49.356
[Hiba in Arabic]
00:19:50.148 --> 00:19:51.775
[Jude] Are you worried about
what I'm gonna ask?
00:19:51.859 --> 00:19:52.901
[Hiba] No.
00:19:54.736 --> 00:19:56.613
No, I want to give you what you want.
00:19:57.114 --> 00:19:59.032
[Jude] Is it what I want
or is it what you want?
00:20:00.534 --> 00:20:02.744
[Hiba] I mean, I wouldn't have done this
00:20:02.828 --> 00:20:06.039
if I didn't believe that what you want
is what I want too.
00:20:08.417 --> 00:20:09.877
[two drum beats echoing]
00:20:09.960 --> 00:20:12.671
[grandmother in Arabic]
00:20:17.342 --> 00:20:19.845
[Hiba]
00:20:36.278 --> 00:20:37.988
[Hiba]
00:20:47.956 --> 00:20:49.625
[two ominous drum beats echoing]
00:20:54.338 --> 00:20:56.381
[grandmother]
00:21:06.600 --> 00:21:07.434
[Hiba]
00:21:09.811 --> 00:21:11.021
[in English] ...she was huge!
00:21:12.147 --> 00:21:15.526
[in Arabic]
00:21:15.609 --> 00:21:18.779
[in English] Wow!
Like, she blows you away.
00:21:19.613 --> 00:21:21.156
You know, her confidence.
00:21:21.240 --> 00:21:22.574
[in Arabic]
00:21:43.178 --> 00:21:48.600
[in English] And it's like she lives
in you, with you, and you live for her.
00:21:48.684 --> 00:21:51.103
[ominous drumming playing]
00:21:51.728 --> 00:21:54.106
[in Arabic]
00:21:56.483 --> 00:21:59.486
[in English]
00:22:01.029 --> 00:22:02.364
[birds chirping]
00:22:02.447 --> 00:22:04.867
[children in Arabic]
00:22:20.090 --> 00:22:22.176
[chatter continues indistinctly]
00:22:38.775 --> 00:22:39.985
[clattering in jar]
00:22:50.913 --> 00:22:53.081
[Jude]
00:22:53.707 --> 00:22:55.042
[chuckles]
00:23:18.524 --> 00:23:20.359
[Jude]
00:23:20.901 --> 00:23:23.070
[Teta]
00:23:31.703 --> 00:23:33.539
[Jude]
00:23:33.622 --> 00:23:36.083
[Teta]
00:23:47.344 --> 00:23:49.680
[Jude]
00:23:52.850 --> 00:23:54.643
[Hiba]
00:24:02.985 --> 00:24:05.070
[Jude]
00:24:25.340 --> 00:24:27.926
[rustling]
00:24:29.178 --> 00:24:31.346
[no audible dialogue]
00:24:35.225 --> 00:24:37.853
[Hiba]
00:25:17.351 --> 00:25:19.353
[father]
00:25:26.985 --> 00:25:29.071
[father]
00:25:33.742 --> 00:25:34.910
[in English] No, I think...
00:25:34.993 --> 00:25:36.245
I think, um...
00:25:37.162 --> 00:25:38.372
[in Arabic]
00:25:42.668 --> 00:25:43.585
[in English] Um...
00:25:48.215 --> 00:25:51.802
[in Arabic]
00:25:58.559 --> 00:26:03.689
[father]
00:26:03.772 --> 00:26:04.773
[in English] No. No, no, no.
00:26:04.857 --> 00:26:08.861
I don't have a guilt feeling 'cause
I don't have a grudge toward her at all.
00:26:08.944 --> 00:26:12.906
[in Arabic]
00:26:42.936 --> 00:26:45.022
[rustling]
00:27:03.957 --> 00:27:06.126
-[insects chirring]
-[car horns honking]
00:27:15.010 --> 00:27:17.971
[leaves rustling in breeze]
00:27:36.865 --> 00:27:40.035
[indistinct chatter nearby]
00:27:46.333 --> 00:27:48.418
[in English] My poems. [chuckles]
00:27:48.502 --> 00:27:50.796
-Look, I was so young.
-This is not written by hand?
00:27:50.879 --> 00:27:52.714
This is... Oh my God,
you're like a typewriter.
00:27:52.798 --> 00:27:54.716
-Yeah. Look at this.
-It's amazing.
00:27:54.800 --> 00:27:56.301
It's like, um...
00:27:56.385 --> 00:27:58.887
-There is a date somewhere.
-1980s? Amazing.
00:27:58.971 --> 00:28:00.055
[chuckles]
00:28:00.138 --> 00:28:01.723
I had to dig it up to find it.
00:28:01.807 --> 00:28:03.225
-Super cool.
-I used to write a lot.
00:28:03.308 --> 00:28:04.393
You used to write so much.
00:28:05.936 --> 00:28:07.896
Yeah. I have, like, other books.
00:28:07.980 --> 00:28:09.648
[applause]
00:28:09.731 --> 00:28:11.942
I'm just going to start the night
by asking
00:28:12.025 --> 00:28:13.777
if there are going to be
any open mic'ers,
00:28:13.861 --> 00:28:15.988
anyone who's going to come up
and share their poetry,
00:28:16.071 --> 00:28:18.490
so we can know how
to go about this night.
00:28:18.991 --> 00:28:22.369
I know I am sharing probably
one or two or three or four.
00:28:23.203 --> 00:28:24.997
You too? Okay. Anyone else?
00:28:28.375 --> 00:28:30.878
If you want!
Who heard me before?
00:28:30.961 --> 00:28:33.505
[in Arabic]
00:28:33.589 --> 00:28:35.966
[in English] Okay. All right. So...
00:28:38.844 --> 00:28:43.682
I wrote it long time ago to someone
who had a very strong effect,
00:28:43.765 --> 00:28:45.434
an impact in my life.
00:28:45.976 --> 00:28:46.810
Um...
00:28:47.728 --> 00:28:49.980
[in Arabic]
00:28:55.777 --> 00:28:58.906
[Jude]
00:29:03.869 --> 00:29:05.329
[Jude]
00:29:05.412 --> 00:29:07.664
[in English] I know, I know.
He was fascinated.
00:29:08.624 --> 00:29:10.000
Fascinated.
00:29:10.709 --> 00:29:15.756
[in Arabic]
00:29:38.654 --> 00:29:40.155
[in English] It's not like...
00:29:40.239 --> 00:29:41.698
I don't believe in these
