Thiaroye, Senegal was once a peaceful fishing village. But now, it's a prime location from which illegal boats to Europe depart. Most fishermen want to leave, as there isn't even enough fish left to feed the families.
Modou is thirty and has twice attempted the perilous journey to Europe. Each time, he nearly lost his life but he's determined to try his luck again. And the next generation is ready to follow.
Talla, Modou's cousin is an English teacher who has chosen to stay in Senegal to work for the development of his country. He tries to make his students aware of the dangers of crossing and the importance of staying in Senegal, despite the fact that most of them have lost all hope in the future of the country.

[sil.]
00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:43.000
[non-English narration]
00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:58.000
[sil.]
00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:13.000
[music]
00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:45.000
[sil.]
00:03:55.000 --> 00:04:00.000
[sil.]
00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:20.000
[sil.]
00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:29.999
Do you agree with Fatou?
Uh… She mentioned a motto
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:34.999
that people say every
time, \"Barca or Barcaq?\"
00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:39.999
What is Barca, Barca is like Barcelona
uh… which is uh… a big town
00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:44.999
in Spain and Barcaq which means what,
00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:49.999
the afterlife, the afterlife.
It means that somehow
00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:54.999
if you analyze this, that people are not really
afraid of dying. And you know that last year,
00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:59.999
2006, in February in March,
many, many people died
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:04.999
and still people are not afraid. Young
people are doing everything they can to go,
00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:09.999
still parents are doing everything they can
00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:14.999
to send their sons to Europe.
They know that people are dying.
00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:19.999
But why do they do that, they know it is
dangerous, they know people are dying
00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.999
and still they are sending their sons
to Europe. Umm… Because they are like,
00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.999
umm… their son succeed in his life.
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.999
They want their sons to succeed in
their lives. Yes. And… and help them.
00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:39.999
And help them. I want to ask you,
do you know someone who died?
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:44.999
Can give us names, someone who died… uh…
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:49.999
Myself, I know. I know,
for example (inaudible),
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.999
I know uh… for example umm… (inaudible),
00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.999
you see, (inaudible). Those
guys are my, you know, cousins
00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:04.999
and they died, they died. So and,
guys, you, what do you think of that?
00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:09.999
Do you know anybody who died last year?
00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:14.999
Yes, I do. Do you? Yes? Is he
or she your… I don\'t know.
00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:19.999
My brother. Your brother? Yes. From
same mother, same father, or…?
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:24.999
No, father. Same father? Yes. And he died?
Yes. When was that?
00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.999
[sil.]
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:34.999
In March or… No, May. May, in May? Yeah.
00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:39.999
Okay. So uh… Sam, do you have a brother
or a friend, or someone that you know
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.999
who disappeared, or who died, or
who went and was brought back?
00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.999
Do you have any? Yeah, I know, Sheena said.
00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:54.999
Sheena said? Okay. And today, she was…
00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:59.999
is in Europe and work there.
00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:04.999
Oh, he took the boats from (inaudible) to…
00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:09.999
… to Europe. And he succeeded, he is over
there? He is in Spain or… He is Spain?
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:14.999
Yeah, in Spain. And he got a job?
And she send it her family,
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:19.999
the money. Okay, cool. Busso, do you have?
00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:24.999
My half-brother. Your half-brother?
00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:29.999
He has died before… Died? Yes.
Oh, sorry about that.
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:34.999
And my twin. There was…
00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:39.999
there was food there…
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.999
[sil.]
00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:49.999
So we understand, Busso, we understand.
She lost her twin.
00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:54.999
Don\'t cry, baby, don\'t cry. It\'s alright.
I didn\'t know that, I\'m sorry.
00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:59.999
She is, uh… you know, a touch…
Anyway, don\'t cry, okay?
00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.999
Guys, uh… five minutes break.
Let\'s have pause
00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:09.999
for just a few minutes, uh… to let
Sister Busso come back with us.
00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:14.999
She is, uh… you know, a touch…
Anyway don\'t cry, okay?
00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:20.000
[sil.]
00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:18.000
[non-English narration]
00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:08.000
[sil.]
00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:13.000
[music]
00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:04.999
Difficulty or difficulties
00:17:05.000 --> 00:17:09.999
in life. What else? Okay.
00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:14.999
Here people go over… They think that
00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:19.999
Europe has a better life. Alright.
Europe, better place,
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:24.999
better life in Europe. Better life in,
that\'s what people would like to have.
00:17:25.000 --> 00:17:29.999
It means that somehow, the
life people live here is,
00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:34.999
uh… you know, just uh… as
(inaudible) said, unbearable.
00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:39.999
And everybody here, they say, \"Uh…
Boy, I want to go to Europe.\"
00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:44.999
Everybody, even if you ask young,
young, young boys or young girls, okay.
00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:49.999
[non-English narration]
00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:54.999
Everybody. Most of
mentioned the government.
00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:59.999
So what do you think? Yes, Fatou. The
government instead of giving them job,
00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:04.999
prepare to spend the money
by preparing meetings
00:18:05.000 --> 00:18:09.999
for the election.
00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:14.999
Alright. Well, that\'s what many,
many, many people here Senegal say.
00:18:15.000 --> 00:18:19.999
Instead of helping young people, you know,
to get a job, instead of building schools,
00:18:20.000 --> 00:18:24.999
instead of, you know, they
spend all their time,
00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:29.999
all they have in meetings, in
campaigns, you know, to reelection.
00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:34.999
So do you share Fatou\'s idea? What
do you think of the government?
00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:39.999
They are here for some (inaudible).
Do you mean, do you want to say
00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:44.999
that they just, you know,
steal money for themselves?
00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:49.999
And if they take that money what do they do with the
money. Well, we have seen that many politicians,
00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:54.999
you know, they have very
big houses, very nice!
00:18:55.000 --> 00:18:59.999
Big cars, beautiful cars, what
do you think of all that?
00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:04.999
For example, I\'m elected uh… member
of Parliament and a year later,
00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:09.999
I have a very, very big house,
a very, very big and nice car,
00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:14.999
you know, I have, you know,
many, many wives everywhere.
00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:23.000
What do you think of that?
00:20:35.000 --> 00:20:43.000
[sil.]
00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:38.000
[sil.]
00:23:10.000 --> 00:23:15.000
[sil.]
00:25:55.000 --> 00:26:00.000
[sil.]
00:26:15.000 --> 00:26:20.000
[sil.]
00:27:00.000 --> 00:27:05.000
[sil.]
00:28:05.000 --> 00:28:10.000
[sil.]
00:29:35.000 --> 00:29:40.000
[sil.]
00:30:40.000 --> 00:30:48.000
[sil.]
00:31:05.000 --> 00:31:13.000
[music]
00:32:40.000 --> 00:32:44.999
If you go to Europe, you\'ll be a cleaner
00:32:45.000 --> 00:32:49.999
and people refuse to be cleaners here in
Senegal, you know. If you go to Europe,
00:32:50.000 --> 00:32:54.999
you\'ll be a babysitter and people
don\'t want to be babysitters here,
00:32:55.000 --> 00:32:59.999
etc, etc, many things. The
jobs they refuse here
00:33:00.000 --> 00:33:04.999
in our own country, if they go abroad,
they do that. You see the problem?
00:33:05.000 --> 00:33:09.999
But the only problem may be, the job you get here
in Senegal, if you go to Europe, the same job,
00:33:10.000 --> 00:33:14.999
you\'ll earn much more money than here.
This is the problem.
00:33:15.000 --> 00:33:19.999
And how can we solve that, so this is
a big question. We have to stand up,
00:33:20.000 --> 00:33:24.999
we have to stand up and do something.
00:33:25.000 --> 00:33:29.999
Don\'t minimise anything, anything.
It is very possible.
00:33:30.000 --> 00:33:34.999
I think that we can get developed. But
it depends on us, it depends on you,
00:33:35.000 --> 00:33:39.999
it depends on me, on all
of us, it depends on us.
00:33:40.000 --> 00:33:44.999
If we work hard, we can succeed.
00:33:45.000 --> 00:33:50.000
[sil.]
00:35:10.000 --> 00:35:18.000
[sil.]
00:37:55.000 --> 00:38:03.000
[sil.]
00:38:55.000 --> 00:39:03.000
[sil.]
00:39:20.000 --> 00:39:28.000
[music]
00:40:40.000 --> 00:40:48.000
[sil.]
00:44:45.000 --> 00:44:53.000
[sil.]
00:45:00.000 --> 00:45:08.000
[sil.]
00:46:45.000 --> 00:46:53.000
[sil.]
00:47:30.000 --> 00:47:38.000
[sil.]
