In western Montana, recently divorced Lue lives with his mother and keeps to a steady, quiet routine: his maintenance job, working his family stand at the farmers market, fly fishing on the river, and midnight outings for karaoke at the local bar. He lives with his widowed mother, Song, whose efforts to find him another wife are unwelcome and increasingly difficult to avoid. Song worries that she can’t get through to him, and seeks guidance from the ancestors.
The order that Lue clings to begins to crumble when he is suddenly laid off. He hides the truth from Song and scrambles to find work, but she senses something is wrong. She consults her shaman for help, but Lue only pulls further away. Soon Lue discovers that the spirit world may still have influence over his life—and he must finally face the buried pain that destroyed his marriage.
“Quiet yet fulfilling… [BITTERROOT] will resonate with students of Asian-American studies, Family studies, Aging studies and Social Work.” —Educational Media Reviews Online
“[A] cinematic feat… Visibility, storytelling, narratives, and the politics of visualizing race and ethnicity are ongoing sites of contention for Asian Americans within film and media studies. That Brunner-Sung’s screenplay intentionally leaves unresolved Lue’s story in Bitterroot pushes forward the narrative plenitude that we so desperately need in today’s media landscape.” —Kong Pheng Pha, Asian Ethnicity
“Bitterroot is an impassioned, poetic depiction of Montana's Hmong community. The movie is deeply authentic in its rhythms, from its scenes of rural foraging on lush mountainsides, to its subtle tug-of-war between community pressures and individual hardship. At its best, it's nothing short of a consummate artistic achievement, given its use of image and sound to unearth unspoken lived realities. It's one of the most uplifting movies this year.” —Joy Sauce
“Superbly crafted. What impresses most profoundly about Bitterroot is the film's pristine confidence.” —The Movie Waffler

[water flowing]
368
00:54:56.610 --> 00:54:58.520
This is the perfect spot.
369
00:55:12.479 --> 00:55:15.229
So this is the rod and this here.
370
00:55:24.010 --> 00:55:26.593
[gentle music]
371
00:56:03.165 --> 00:56:07.603
[speaking in foreign language]
372
00:56:07.603 --> 00:56:11.520
[speaking in foreign language]
373
00:56:13.391 --> 00:56:17.308
[speaking in foreign language]
374
00:56:22.438 --> 00:56:25.188
[birds chirping]
375
00:56:34.979 --> 00:56:37.812
[packet whirring]
376
00:57:03.622 --> 00:57:07.539
[speaking in foreign language]
377
00:57:40.346 --> 00:57:42.929
[gentle music]
378
00:58:20.302 --> 00:58:22.885
[body banging]
379
00:58:33.193 --> 00:58:36.026
[person grunting]
380
00:58:39.952 --> 00:58:42.869
[person breathing]
381
00:59:15.448 --> 00:59:19.365
[speaking in foreign language]
382
00:59:28.124 --> 00:59:30.874
[birds chirping]
383
00:59:33.961 --> 00:59:36.628
[flies buzzing]
384
01:00:01.877 --> 01:00:03.451
[dog barking]
385
01:00:03.451 --> 01:00:05.118
Kusom, come, come,
386
01:00:14.745 --> 01:00:17.043
get over here come on, Kusom.
387
01:00:17.984 --> 01:00:18.817
Come on.
388
01:00:29.250 --> 01:00:30.667
Do you need help?
389
01:00:32.152 --> 01:00:34.735
[gentle music]
390
01:01:10.586 --> 01:01:13.503
[insects chirping]
391
01:01:25.080 --> 01:01:25.913
Sorry.
392
01:01:28.888 --> 01:01:31.805
[insects chirping]
393
01:02:08.495 --> 01:02:09.828
You live here?
394
01:02:11.760 --> 01:02:13.473
It\'s a family from outta state.
395
01:02:14.790 --> 01:02:15.623
Oh.
396
01:02:20.130 --> 01:02:21.193
I take care of it.
397
01:02:31.677 --> 01:02:35.177
[vehicle engine whirring]
398
01:03:10.496 --> 01:03:14.413
[speaking in foreign language]
399
01:03:21.419 --> 01:03:24.086
[phone buzzing]
400
01:03:28.072 --> 01:03:29.121
Hey.
401
01:03:29.121 --> 01:03:30.172
Where have you been?
402
01:03:30.172 --> 01:03:31.005
I\'ve been trying to call you.
403
01:03:33.411 --> 01:03:34.244
I was on the mountains.
404
01:03:34.244 --> 01:03:35.510
I was gonna.
405
01:03:35.510 --> 01:03:37.149
Mountains?
406
01:03:37.149 --> 01:03:38.572
What\'s going on?
407
01:03:38.572 --> 01:03:40.230
She\'s back in the hospital.
408
01:03:40.230 --> 01:03:41.338
What?
409
01:03:41.338 --> 01:03:43.980
In the hospital.
410
01:03:43.980 --> 01:03:45.317
Hello, hello?
411
01:04:02.339 --> 01:04:05.256
[insects chirping]
412
01:04:12.885 --> 01:04:16.718
[singing in foreign language]
413
01:04:50.766 --> 01:04:54.599
[singing in foreign language]
414
01:06:02.904 --> 01:06:06.078
[drawer whirring]
415
01:06:06.078 --> 01:06:08.661
[gentle music]
416
01:06:55.302 --> 01:06:57.885
[gentle music]
417
01:07:27.162 --> 01:07:29.912
[birds chirping]
418
01:07:52.788 --> 01:07:53.933
Do you have to do that?
419
01:08:01.590 --> 01:08:04.040
Killed the chicken, is that Hmong enough for you?
420
01:08:13.830 --> 01:08:15.243
Can I ask you something?
421
01:08:17.403 --> 01:08:18.236
What?
422
01:08:19.203 --> 01:08:22.237
Why\'d you cheat on her, how could you?
423
01:08:24.542 --> 01:08:27.292
[birds chirping]
424
01:09:14.225 --> 01:09:17.058
[machine beeping]
425
01:09:20.447 --> 01:09:24.280
[singing in foreign language]
426
01:09:52.948 --> 01:09:56.597
[speaking in foreign language]
427
01:09:56.597 --> 01:09:58.931
[speaking in foreign language]
428
01:09:58.931 --> 01:10:03.130
[speaking in foreign language]
429
01:10:03.130 --> 01:10:07.047
[speaking in foreign language]
430
01:11:04.664 --> 01:11:08.581
[speaking in foreign language]
431
01:11:30.276 --> 01:11:34.193
[speaking in foreign language]
432
01:11:49.919 --> 01:11:51.959
[feet clopping]
433
01:11:51.959 --> 01:11:54.709
[birds chirping]
434
01:12:56.526 --> 01:12:58.203
Hey, sorry.
435
01:13:00.752 --> 01:13:02.243
I brought some things from my garden.
436
01:13:04.770 --> 01:13:05.603
Hey buddy.
437
01:13:07.254 --> 01:13:08.333
There\'s some beers in there too.
438
01:13:09.510 --> 01:13:10.950
I don\'t drink.
439
01:13:10.950 --> 01:13:11.783
Oh.
440
01:13:23.490 --> 01:13:25.073
How long have you been out here?
441
01:13:26.790 --> 01:13:29.703
It\'ll be a year in August, fire season.
442
01:13:38.130 --> 01:13:40.880
It was bad last year.
443
01:13:42.720 --> 01:13:44.470
Yeah, I was supposed to evacuate.
444
01:13:50.196 --> 01:13:52.113
You didn\'t?
445
01:13:59.220 --> 01:14:00.903
It may sound stupid,
446
01:14:01.920 --> 01:14:04.563
but I was more afraid about being back in town.
447
01:14:05.490 --> 01:14:06.340
What\'s in town?
448
01:14:08.220 --> 01:14:09.053
People.
449
01:14:29.710 --> 01:14:32.463
About time to clear the brush again.
450
01:14:47.550 --> 01:14:49.300
What\'s the story with the tattoo?
451
01:14:54.210 --> 01:14:56.177
You ever do anything you regret?
452
01:15:03.514 --> 01:15:04.347
Yeah.
453
01:15:12.731 --> 01:15:13.564
Yeah.
454
01:15:19.287 --> 01:15:21.954
[water flowing]
455
01:15:33.320 --> 01:15:34.153
Hello?
456
01:15:43.370 --> 01:15:45.953
[gentle music]
457
01:16:48.129 --> 01:16:51.129
[people chattering]
458
01:17:27.607 --> 01:17:30.190
[gentle music]
459
01:18:12.259 --> 01:18:14.926
[water flowing]
460
01:18:20.290 --> 01:18:22.873
[wind blowing]
461
01:18:41.144 --> 01:18:43.894
[birds chirping]
462
01:19:01.296 --> 01:19:04.296
[branches whirring]
463
01:19:35.321 --> 01:19:36.238
You okay?
464
01:19:47.974 --> 01:19:50.974
[branches whirring]
465
01:19:55.658 --> 01:19:58.408
[birds chirping]
466
01:20:36.131 --> 01:20:38.798
[water flowing]
467
01:21:04.311 --> 01:21:07.228
[insects chirping]
468
01:21:29.222 --> 01:21:31.972
[birds chirping]
469
01:22:26.963 --> 01:22:29.630
[water flowing]
470
01:22:39.494 --> 01:22:42.244
[birds chirping]
471
01:24:01.114 --> 01:24:04.031
[insects chirping]
472
01:24:42.212 --> 01:24:44.879
[water flowing]
473
01:25:14.205 --> 01:25:16.955
[birds chirping]
