In New Orleans, a century-old tradition rooted in Native American and Black slave communities lives on. Each year for Mardi Gras, "Black Indians" celebrate their culture through elaborate, hand-beaded costumes worn in neighborhood parades. Following the Washitaw Nation and its "Big Chief" David Montana, the film traces a hidden history of America, one that gave birth to Jazz.

(singer singing indistinctly)
00:25:50.802 --> 00:25:51.635
Wait a minute.
00:25:51.635 --> 00:25:52.968
Back to Houston?
00:25:54.631 --> 00:25:59.381
Yeah, well, let me call one
of my chiefs and see if they.
00:26:00.372 --> 00:26:01.455
There, chief.
00:26:04.744 --> 00:26:05.827
Oh, not much.
00:26:06.741 --> 00:26:09.241
You going to practice tonight?
00:26:11.537 --> 00:26:12.370
Hello?
00:26:15.798 --> 00:26:19.158
If they're going,
going, going, going.
00:26:19.158 --> 00:26:19.991
Big Queen.
00:26:21.301 --> 00:26:26.064
You know if how to one of
the guys practice tonight?
00:26:26.064 --> 00:26:28.352
Then I could call Skeeter.
00:26:28.352 --> 00:26:29.347
Let me do that.
00:26:29.347 --> 00:26:31.723
I'm gonna call
you, let you know.
00:26:31.723 --> 00:26:33.079
Okay.
00:26:33.079 --> 00:26:34.540
I guess, I guess.
00:26:34.540 --> 00:26:35.373
Oh.
00:26:36.872 --> 00:26:38.539
I'll call Chief Joe.
00:26:40.349 --> 00:26:42.849
Hey, Chief, this medicine man.
00:26:44.731 --> 00:26:45.564
Yeah.
00:26:45.564 --> 00:26:47.877
I was wondering, do you
know if how to one of those
00:26:47.877 --> 00:26:50.627
is having their
practice tonight?
00:27:02.923 --> 00:27:03.913
(Dwight coughs)
00:27:03.913 --> 00:27:06.124
Hey, Chief, this is Medicine.
00:27:06.124 --> 00:27:08.863
Give me a holler if you can.
00:27:08.863 --> 00:27:10.590
What's going on, Spy?
00:27:10.590 --> 00:27:11.507
Hey, Chief.
00:27:14.052 --> 00:27:14.885
I was wondering,
00:27:14.885 --> 00:27:19.052
you know if how to one
is having practice tonight?
00:27:19.995 --> 00:27:24.461
He said that they've
been on and off, on and off.
00:27:24.461 --> 00:27:28.878
Say it's a possibility that
they having practice tonight.
00:27:28.878 --> 00:27:32.821
(crowd chattering)
(sirens blaring)
00:27:32.821 --> 00:27:36.308
(crowd oohs) (upbeat music)
00:27:36.308 --> 00:27:40.641
(group singing in
foreign language)
00:28:06.371 --> 00:28:11.371
(group singing in foreign
language continues)
00:28:36.049 --> 00:28:41.049
(group singing in foreign
language continues)
00:29:06.409 --> 00:29:11.409
(group singing in foreign
language continues)
00:29:36.373 --> 00:29:41.373
(group singing in foreign
language continues)
00:30:06.183 --> 00:30:11.183
(group singing in foreign
language continues)
00:30:36.521 --> 00:30:41.521
(group singing in foreign
language continues)
00:31:06.299 --> 00:31:07.847
(group singing in foreign
language continues)
00:31:07.847 --> 00:31:12.180
(both speaking in
foreign language)
00:31:36.180 --> 00:31:41.180
(group singing in foreign
language continues)
00:31:49.475 --> 00:31:51.975
(car revving)
00:31:53.732 --> 00:31:56.315
(ship revving)
00:32:00.603 --> 00:32:03.353
(cars whooshing)
00:32:09.130 --> 00:32:14.130
anyone else that's in America
00:32:14.132 --> 00:32:16.990
and the same thing I know
with the Mardi Gras Indians
00:32:16.990 --> 00:32:19.223
that I've known and the
Black Indians that I know
00:32:19.223 --> 00:32:21.126
and they're all different.
00:32:21.126 --> 00:32:23.370
Some do some things, some don't,
00:32:23.370 --> 00:32:26.370
some know their
history, some don't.
00:32:27.462 --> 00:32:30.542
that I got of them
00:32:30.542 --> 00:32:33.248
when I first saw them was,
00:32:33.248 --> 00:32:35.498
wow, these are ghost suits.
00:32:37.087 --> 00:32:40.156
They're even talking
about these are spirit suits,
00:32:40.156 --> 00:32:41.289
and I go, "Beautiful,"
00:32:41.289 --> 00:32:43.702
'cause what they're doing
basically is showing their aura.
00:32:43.702 --> 00:32:46.366
And then the tradition of it
00:32:46.366 --> 00:32:47.703
has been going on
for a hundred years.
00:32:47.703 --> 00:32:52.399
I mean, to me it was the most
poetic response to oppression
00:32:52.399 --> 00:32:54.468
that I have ever seen.
00:32:54.468 --> 00:32:59.468
Here are people that are
told they're ugly, ignorant, lazy,
00:32:59.739 --> 00:33:02.335
and they walk out on
Mardi Gras with this outfit
00:33:02.335 --> 00:33:04.808
that they can't figure out
how they put it together.
00:33:04.808 --> 00:33:06.216
(Goat chuckles)
00:33:06.216 --> 00:33:07.535
And they've been sewing what?
00:33:07.535 --> 00:33:08.868
How long?
00:33:08.868 --> 00:33:09.701
From last Mardi Gras to this?
00:33:09.701 --> 00:33:11.468
They're motherfuckin' lazy.
00:33:11.468 --> 00:33:12.304
And you think I'm ugly?
00:33:12.304 --> 00:33:14.003
No baby, I'm pretty.
00:33:14.003 --> 00:33:15.587
Check me out, I'm pretty.
00:33:15.587 --> 00:33:18.597
And the whole thing became
pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty.
00:33:18.597 --> 00:33:20.973
(lighter clicks)
00:33:20.973 --> 00:33:25.890
And their legend is part of
the process of making the suit.
00:33:26.765 --> 00:33:29.924
What he's saying, if I come
from Blackfeet in his mind,
00:33:29.924 --> 00:33:32.917
he might not even mean
a hereditary descent,
00:33:32.917 --> 00:33:36.863
but a spiritual, a Blackfoot
warrior is telling him
00:33:36.863 --> 00:33:39.702
or in communication with him.
00:33:39.702 --> 00:33:42.847
And so I had friends who were
leading ghost dance ceremonies
00:33:42.847 --> 00:33:45.159
at the time and I said,
00:33:45.159 --> 00:33:48.424
"Look, I would like to get
an invitation for these guys
00:33:48.424 --> 00:33:52.007
to come ghost dance
and see how we do this,
00:33:52.983 --> 00:33:54.463
how we make our ghost shirts
00:33:54.463 --> 00:33:59.406
just like they make their big
spirit outfit that they wear."
00:33:59.406 --> 00:34:02.122
And so, the guy who
was doing the pipe,
00:34:02.122 --> 00:34:05.959
Cam Knight Chase
Lowell, he did four days,
00:34:05.959 --> 00:34:10.079
four nights fasting, no food,
no water, praying constantly.
00:34:10.079 --> 00:34:14.127
That's how you decide
and that's the medicine way.
00:34:14.127 --> 00:34:17.947
And he was sitting there
and he had his tobacco
00:34:17.947 --> 00:34:20.358
that's always
laid out in a circle
00:34:20.358 --> 00:34:24.191
with the basic colors
red, black, white, blue.
00:34:27.627 --> 00:34:32.513
And he was praying and
praying at the end of the final day
00:34:32.513 --> 00:34:35.690
and he looks down and the
little tobacco things stand up
00:34:35.690 --> 00:34:39.254
and they start dancing
around in a circle.
00:34:39.254 --> 00:34:40.972
And he's going, "What?"
00:34:40.972 --> 00:34:43.799
And then he feels this old
man on his shoulder tapping him
00:34:43.799 --> 00:34:46.032
and he's offering him a pipe.
00:34:46.032 --> 00:34:49.189
And the guy said, "The tobacco's
dancing, leave me alone."
00:34:49.189 --> 00:34:50.643
(Goat chuckles)
00:34:50.643 --> 00:34:53.158
And then he
realized, oh, my God,
00:34:53.158 --> 00:34:56.908
that was part of the
vision to take the pipe.
00:34:58.176 --> 00:35:01.531
So, I said, "I have approval
now to take the pipe
00:35:01.531 --> 00:35:03.198
and to do ceremony."
00:35:04.512 --> 00:35:06.012
And I told Tootie,
00:35:07.709 --> 00:35:10.265
"Cam say you can
come to 20 or the 27th,
00:35:10.265 --> 00:35:11.663
what's it gonna be?"
00:35:11.663 --> 00:35:12.851
He says, "The 27th."
00:35:12.851 --> 00:35:14.454
I said, "Okay."
00:35:14.454 --> 00:35:18.275
So we got everybody
together for the 27th.
00:35:18.275 --> 00:35:22.404
Local Indians were kind of
upset and they called me to drum,
00:35:22.404 --> 00:35:26.144
"Come to the drum so
we can talk about this."
00:35:26.144 --> 00:35:27.607
I said, "Okay."
00:35:27.607 --> 00:35:30.529
And we come to the drum
and they're all totally against
00:35:30.529 --> 00:35:33.173
doing any kind of native
ceremony with these guys
00:35:33.173 --> 00:35:37.829
that they considered mascots
and hooligans and Ruffians.
00:35:37.829 --> 00:35:39.732
They didn't like them.
00:35:39.732 --> 00:35:43.272
And they tried to convince
me and I was going,
00:35:43.272 --> 00:35:44.605
"Well, I'm here.
00:35:46.638 --> 00:35:50.400
I'm here to answer prayers
and that's Buffalo Medicine.
00:35:50.400 --> 00:35:53.612
These people have been
praying for over 120 years
00:35:53.612 --> 00:35:56.736
that you would understand them.
00:35:56.736 --> 00:35:59.236
They have a song, Indian Red."
00:36:00.267 --> 00:36:02.100
I said, "If I'm right,
00:36:04.392 --> 00:36:06.724
there will be a sign
from Buffalo Nation
00:36:06.724 --> 00:36:09.401
that what I have done is good.
00:36:09.401 --> 00:36:12.173
If I'm not right,
there will be no sign,
00:36:12.173 --> 00:36:14.578
and you will be right."
00:36:14.578 --> 00:36:16.074
So we did ceremony.
00:36:16.074 --> 00:36:19.814
We had, oh, gosh, a couple of
hundred Indians in the Congos.
00:36:19.814 --> 00:36:23.224
We were all in full regalia
in August at high noon.
00:36:23.224 --> 00:36:24.057
Oh, Lord.
00:36:25.237 --> 00:36:27.899
And we did the pipe
and in Lakota way,
00:36:27.899 --> 00:36:31.617
they only put six pinches
of tobacco in the pipe,
00:36:31.617 --> 00:36:34.367
and pray and then
pass it around.
00:36:35.478 --> 00:36:40.478
That six pinches of tobacco
smoked over 200 people that day.
00:36:42.052 --> 00:36:43.989
The very next day
it was announced
00:36:43.989 --> 00:36:46.786
that the white
buffalo had been born.
00:36:46.786 --> 00:36:47.619
(gentle percussive music)
00:36:47.619 --> 00:36:52.036
(singer singing in
foreign language)
00:37:11.322 --> 00:37:13.987
(knuckles rapping)
00:37:13.987 --> 00:37:14.820
(door clicks)
00:37:14.820 --> 00:37:16.143
00:37:16.143 --> 00:37:17.584
That's the Big Chief.
00:37:17.584 --> 00:37:18.651
00:37:18.651 --> 00:37:19.685
Come all the way over here.
00:37:19.685 --> 00:37:20.618
00:37:20.618 --> 00:37:21.500
Beautiful.
00:37:21.500 --> 00:37:22.853
This is the cuffs.
00:37:22.853 --> 00:37:24.481
00:37:24.481 --> 00:37:27.011
00:37:27.011 --> 00:37:29.291
00:37:29.291 --> 00:37:31.130
00:37:31.130 --> 00:37:31.963
00:37:33.119 --> 00:37:35.188
00:37:35.188 --> 00:37:38.099
Don't get me wrong 'cause
this is what you go see.
00:37:38.099 --> 00:37:40.504
(Goat laughs)
00:37:40.504 --> 00:37:43.335
That's back, that's
watching my back.
00:37:43.335 --> 00:37:45.183
sure.
00:37:45.183 --> 00:37:46.547
That was the boots.
00:37:46.547 --> 00:37:50.463
I gotta finished putting
the marabou on the boot,
00:37:50.463 --> 00:37:52.296
and this is the crown.
00:37:53.387 --> 00:37:54.470
I'll do this.
00:37:55.963 --> 00:37:57.019
00:37:57.019 --> 00:37:57.987
Okay.
00:37:57.987 --> 00:38:00.615
Yes. (chuckles)
00:38:00.615 --> 00:38:01.911
00:38:01.911 --> 00:38:03.704
Well, you don't have
much weight on you,
00:38:03.704 --> 00:38:05.189
and that's good too, you know.
00:38:05.189 --> 00:38:06.576
You ain't got no fat.
00:38:06.576 --> 00:38:09.240
else is perfect.
00:38:09.240 --> 00:38:10.490
00:38:11.460 --> 00:38:12.814
Oh.
00:38:12.814 --> 00:38:14.736
I can do that dance.
00:38:14.736 --> 00:38:16.157
(both laughing)
00:38:16.157 --> 00:38:18.824
00:38:20.613 --> 00:38:21.520
You gonna be out there?
00:38:21.520 --> 00:38:23.597
going to be uptown, yeah.
00:38:23.597 --> 00:38:24.935
on the fire, right?
00:38:24.935 --> 00:38:25.991
I'm gonna sit down a minute.
00:38:25.991 --> 00:38:27.069
00:38:27.069 --> 00:38:30.414
We're in St. Joseph's night now.
00:38:30.414 --> 00:38:32.297
00:38:32.297 --> 00:38:33.373
00:38:33.373 --> 00:38:35.364
So we'll get the dress twice.
00:38:35.364 --> 00:38:39.973
for the peace of the family.
00:38:39.973 --> 00:38:41.271
For the last couple of years,
00:38:41.271 --> 00:38:43.643
Darryl and I have been feeling.
00:38:43.643 --> 00:38:45.740
Well, I won't call it a feeling.
00:38:45.740 --> 00:38:47.720
It just was a lot of
misunderstanding
00:38:47.720 --> 00:38:50.070
and things people said,
this, that and the other.
00:38:50.070 --> 00:38:52.668
So, I wanna keep peace.
00:38:52.668 --> 00:38:56.892
So this is why I made the
coming of the sacred white buffalo
00:38:56.892 --> 00:38:58.003
to keep peace.
00:38:58.003 --> 00:39:02.086
And for every member
in my family that's troubled
00:39:03.140 --> 00:39:06.033
with war amongst one another,
00:39:06.033 --> 00:39:10.807
they wanted these buffaloes
on my suit, be of peace to them.
00:39:10.807 --> 00:39:14.106
I give thanks to God for
guiding my hands and my eyes
00:39:14.106 --> 00:39:16.153
and my thoughts to the ideas.
00:39:16.153 --> 00:39:19.288
And I give thanks to
my helpers like Dennis
00:39:19.288 --> 00:39:21.818
and the many others
that come through
00:39:21.818 --> 00:39:23.171
to help finish the suit.
00:39:23.171 --> 00:39:27.421
So, as far as I'm concerned,
the hatchet is buried.
00:39:28.286 --> 00:39:30.189
00:39:30.189 --> 00:39:33.951
hope when we out there,
