Two young nuns explore Chicago, from a supermarket to the Art Institute and in front of churches on Sunday, confronting people with the crucial question, "Are you happy?" They meet a lonely girl, a happy mother, another nun, lovers, hippie musicians, a lady sociologist, a professor, and even actor Stepin Fetchit. The answers they get range in sincerity and depth: "Happiness is the absence of fear," "Avoiding people," "Raspberries," "Joy in knowing Christ." The humor and sadness of these honest encounters lift the film beyond its interview format to a serious and moving inquiry into the concerns of contemporary man, and also into the circumstances in which men will actually express their concerns.
"In this fascinating 1968 documentary, one of the earliest by Kartemquin Films, two outgoing Catholic nuns, Sister Marie Arne and Sister Mary Campion, walk around Chicago asking people if they're happy. The answers they get are reasoned, spiritual, sometimes philosophical, and, in one case, frankly sexual, but a recurring motif is hope that the Vietnam war will end soon. The sisters' warmth and interest are reciprocated by their subjects, most of whom show concern for others and little regard for their moment in the spotlight." —Andrea Gronvall, The Chicago Reader
"My favorite Kartemquin film... an engaging and enlightening film... sincere, articulate, and filled with insights into the era's concerns and worries. While the nuns appear to be onscreen "personalities," which is not a cinema verite characteristic, their simple, innocent approach to the interviews make them more like the film's subject than it's crew." —Susan Doll, Facets Features
"Delightful food for thought" —All Movie Guide
"...Inquiring Nuns is the closest thing to a ... pure ... documentary that I have ever seen." —William Routt, Film Quarterly
"Guilessly provocative" —Terry Catchpole, Entertainment Weekly "Inquiring Nuns is handled with such surpassing understanding that it becomes a quite profound and moving experience...a marvelous revelation of our time and ourselves." —Richard Christiansen, Chicago Daily News
"A profound and moving experience for the viewer... we have a chance to meet people talking honestly and openly about themselves... a marvelous revelation of our time and ourselves." —Chicago Tribune
"Quinn and Temaner are filmmakers and 'inquiring reporters' with great insight, and a lot to tell us about ourselves." — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, 1968
"A lovely, weirdly potent time capsule... a single, polyphonic ode to late '67 Chicago and what was on the mind of its collective citizenry." — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, 2016

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.000
[music]
00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:34.999
Umm… Yes, I really feel like I…
00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:39.999
you know, I am not exactly sure what we’re going to do
today. If we just wanna kind of go over, you know, what…
00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:44.999
what and why. What we’re going to do and appreciate it.
What would you feel most comfortable? I don’t know.
00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:49.999
I’ve… not having, ever done it… what do you think? What’s
best? I mean, just to walk up to someone and say, you know,
00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:54.999
\"Are you happy?\" \"What makes
you happy?\" Or umm… and then…
00:00:55.000 --> 00:00:59.999
I think automatically they will have a question
of, you know, \"What are you doing or who are you
00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.999
or something like that. You just feel it from there
and go right on. And then work with them until
00:01:05.000 --> 00:01:09.999
and then return to the question after
you’ve explained may be what we’re doing.
00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.999
Are we going to pick who ever we’d like to walk up
to or is that going to make any difference, yes.
00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:19.999
You can just pick whoever you want. Are we
going together or are we going one at a time?
00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.999
We thought together. All right. Okay. Well,
like, give us a rundown like, if you…
00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:29.999
Okay, we’re standing out in front of the
church… How much do you want us to do?
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:34.999
I mean, you know, what I mean? Like, define
what… what you want us to feel through
00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:39.999
and what you want us to do? Like, is there an approach to… As we see
the people coming, you just want us to approach them on the question
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:44.999
and work from there, and just ignore
the fact of both of you being around
00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:49.999
and just go right on? If it comes up, you
could just explain what you’re doing there.
00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:54.999
Why take for myself? I’m just gonna have to
do it a couple of times. Because I, you know,
00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:59.999
it’s hard to tell what umm… you know, even where
you are going, you know, what you were saying.
00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:04.999
Why don’t we borrow talking? Do you
want me to hold the microphone?
00:02:05.000 --> 00:02:09.999
Yeah. Why don’t you start? Hold it
like that, a little lower down.
00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:14.999
And keep your thumb like that and then you bring it
up, and point it at the person’s mouth like that.
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:19.999
I see, to the sister. Okay, let me hold it.
00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.999
Like this and then it would be like… like this?
That’s right. Even my hands started shaking.
00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:29.999
Try to minimize the uh…
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:34.999
movement on it, or else like it’s picked up. It picks up
your hand movement. Yeah. But, I mean, don’t flip that
00:02:35.000 --> 00:02:39.999
to get into your way interviewing but…
00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:44.999
It does something to me, it has
something in my hand. Positively or…
00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:49.999
Negatively. Do you want me to hold this? Let sister
hold it this time. I don’t know why. I’m fine.
00:02:50.000 --> 00:02:54.999
[sil.]
00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:59.999
So that’s the end of the ceremonial handing over,
from now on you have the microphone. Oh, thanks.
00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:04.999
It’s sort of a christening. Yes.
00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:09.999
Umm… I think you’re going to loose a lot of
footage, we have to throw a lot of weight.
00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:14.999
We expected that. Yeah, whatever you do you, don’t worry
about that. Always the best cure is to just go by your…
00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:19.999
your feeling and your instincts. That’s
what I usually do in terms of, like,
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:24.999
with the camera what to shoot or anything and
just how it feels. May be I’m not exactly sure
00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:29.999
what our goal is. Umm… you know, really
what do we want from the people.
00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:34.999
Umm…
00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:39.999
If I could really phrase that in a couple of sentences then I…
then I think I could be, you know, freer in deciding, you know,
00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.999
what to do in a particular situation because you want to work
towards what… what you are working towards. I don’t think we know.
00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:49.999
It’s gonna depend on the people that
we talk to and what they say to you.
00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:54.999
We’re sort of… There was a French
film that did a similar thing to this
00:03:55.000 --> 00:03:59.999
uh… not with nuns, but just with a
couple of girls asking the same question
00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:04.999
and the comparison might be interesting,
we might look at it afterwards
00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:09.999
since you have different kinds
of things they’ve said.
00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:14.999
Do you think you’re almost like umm… would be interested in
a Sister Campaign mentioned at one point, umm… the idea of
00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:19.999
letting them know that we… that we wanted something serious
or in that way, but even the fact that some people will react
00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:24.999
maybe with a serious answers and
others will not. In other words
00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:29.999
we don’t really want to lead them to a serious answer,
if that’s not the way they react to it in the beginning.
00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:34.999
I don’t think so. I mean, that tells something
about them and you can just respond to that
00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:39.999
the best you can. I can just imagine
that, \"What are you nutty nuns doing?\"
00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:44.999
We’re working a little experiment with film
and asking questions and then kind of uh…
00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:49.999
just talking on the street. Would you like to be a
part of it? Sure, why not. First question is easy.
00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:54.999
Are you happy? Groovy. Yeah, I’m happy.
I really am.
00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:59.999
What makes you so? I am the world.
00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:04.999
You like being part of it. I love it,
it’s, you know, it was given to us
00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:09.999
and I’m here to enjoy it. That’s what I am gonna
do. Good. Do you find any obstacles in the way?
00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:14.999
Vietnam. That really is an…
And President Johnson.
00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:19.999
He’s a crook and a phony. What about you?
00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.999
I feel the same way, I mean, happy about most of the
things, except Vietnam and some… and some cases
00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.999
in some ways I feel that they should
fight, because now that we’re…
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:34.999
we’re stuck in it, we’re committed into it. Another
way is I just don’t like a scene get involved,
00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:39.999
I wish we could pull up but we can’t.
That’s the only thing we’re gonna say.
00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:44.999
What would uh… What would
make you happier in life?
00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:49.999
Becoming successful musician, I think, but, yeah.
Yeah, that’s about it. Yeah, I mean, yeah, that’s…
00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:54.999
You play any instrument? Yeah. What do you play? I
play Saxophone. You play Sax. What do you play?
00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:59.999
I sing. You sing? Mm-hmm. Trying to get something
together, you know. It’s called the bubblegum orgy.
00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:04.999
What is the most important
thing to make you happy,
00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:09.999
would it be the success in music? Uh… They hadn’t, no,
I don’t know, just meeting new people now and then,
00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:14.999
you know, making friends with people.
Well, I think that umm…
00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:19.999
music to… to me is an expression of love.
And man if you’re…
00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:24.999
you’re going to love people, you’ve got to do something
for them and I think this is what I can do for people.
00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:29.999
That’s a wonderful thought about music, giving them the love
that you want to express. I think… I think all of the arts is…
00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:34.999
is an expression of love, even the Picasso,
I mean, you know, some people say,
00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:39.999
\"Ah! Boy, you know, what is it?\" But I think it’s really
beautiful, you know, it’s just, it’s just something maybe…
00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.999
maybe a lot of people aren’t ready for it, but I
think they better start getting ready for it because
00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.999
the world is just changing and
man you can’t left behind.
00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:54.999
Thank you for talking to us. Yes, it was wonderful
talking to you. Thank you. Good luck now. Oh, yeah.
00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:59.999
What makes you happy? I was
just walking alone humming.
00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:04.999
Humming? That’s a good sign that you
are happy. Uh-huh, that’s… that’s true
00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:09.999
when you can go home singing in the rain like
today, isn’t it? What… what makes you happy?
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:14.999
Well, I don’t have any problems and
I don’t have anybody in my family
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:19.999
who has to depend on me, everybody’s standing on their own
two feet. So I think that’s something to be happy about.
00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:24.999
I bet you feel… Since I have
a few friends who have some…
00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:29.999
each friend has someone in their
family that depends on them.
00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:34.999
And lot of things they have to do without (inaudible),
you know. And I think this is very unusual.
00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:39.999
Sort of like extra added burdens, isn’t it?
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:44.999
Yes, yes. Where are you headed now?
I’m… I play in an orchestra,
00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:49.999
the young (inaudible) orchestra which is rehearsing in
about a half hour. What do you play? Piano and trumpet.
00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:54.999
Oh! Very good. Obviously it’s not the piano you
have with you. If someone came to you on the street
00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:59.999
and just said to you, well, are you happy, what would
you say? Well, as much as I can in this world I am.
00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:04.999
If you had more would you be happier?
00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:09.999
Uh… what do you mean by more and more finance or…
Well, what do you, you know, whatever you think.
00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:14.999
Well, it’s one that will make
me much happier is to have
00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:19.999
more peace in the world from all the people
who’re fighting each other and hate,
00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:24.999
less… less of that, I think that will make
me even more happier, I think that even gets
00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:29.999
more money than I have now. The
war and everything in Vietnam
00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:34.999
and the various peoples fighting, all over the
world, it’s just… Well, if Jesus Christ could
00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:39.999
just see the world now I think you’d be… he will… I
mean, being on earth, if you could come down on earth
00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:44.999
I think it’ll be uh… great help,
but what we have now we must try.
00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:49.999
What do you think we bring about peace.
Just people understanding each other,
00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:54.999
each other’s aims and what each other
wants, not being too greedy for
00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.999
land, power, or money, and helping
each other more than people do now.
00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:04.999
People really don’t take time to try
and understand people, do they?
00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:09.999
Oh, yes. Especially many
people think that on the
00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:14.999
another side in politics
or other people such as
00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:19.999
people really thinking of the
hippies as being crazy or…
00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:24.999
or rather people thinking of the communists
as being absolute rulers and killers and…
00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:29.999
If you only understand each other
would be much less greed and avarice.
00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:34.999
What are you looking for? Understanding
with people and more love.
00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:39.999
Yeah. Well, good luck on your rehearsal, I
hope you make it. I know you must be nervous.
00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:44.999
Yes, very. It’s one of the reasons
why I stepped in the mess again,
00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:49.999
to try to calm myself down.
Uh-huh, did it help? I think so.
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:54.999
Is it an individual rehearsal? Do you rehearse on an
individual basis? No, the whole orchestra is rehearsing it.
00:09:55.000 --> 00:09:59.999
And after the practice, we will have the
auditions for who’s gonna play. Well, good luck.
00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:04.999
Good luck to you, good-bye now.
Thanks to you too.
00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:09.999
I mean, because I’m going to the bird game on the Cubs Park, the
game starts at 1’o clock but I need some friends of mine about 21.
00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:14.999
So I know if I leave now, I’ll get the subway, the
subway takes me to the bird game, but I mean…
00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:19.999
You see I… I do this when I come… when
I go to the bird games on Sunday see,
00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:24.999
but I usually always go to the St. Odilo Church in
Berwyn see. In Berwyn? Yes, ma’am… Yes, sister.
00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:29.999
Oh! I… wasn’t, Mount Senior that just
died there. Oh, you mean, Father Buckley.
00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:34.999
Yes, Father Buckley. He was an uncle to one of
our sisters. Is that right? Yes, that we knew.
00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:39.999
I mean, we… we like Berwyn
people, they are all very nice.
00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:44.999
To me Sunday is… I must say this… Do you like living in Berwyn?
Yes, ma’am. But most of all I just want to say, I want to say this,
00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:49.999
I mean, some people think… I mean, I don’t if I should say
corning. But to me, Sunday’s just going to the church
00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:54.999
(inaudible) it’s just nice, I mean I like Sunday.
Does it really make you happy to do that? Oh, yeah.
00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:59.999
I mean, I’ll look for this Sunday. I mean, it is, I
don’t want to sound… I mean, I ma’am, if I should say,
00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:04.999
use this word corny but, I mean, I had,
Sunday’s just, it wasn’t the same way.
00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:09.999
I mean, I always want to… I always want to church…
I love going to church, see. But you get older,
00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:14.999
and it’s, in other words I enjoy Sunday
and the church is the big part of Sunday.
00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:19.999
Well, I mean, I… I want to say this because, I mean it
brings me back to, you know, my mother and all that’s,
00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:24.999
These wonderful things that goes back
to that you see. That’s wonderful,
00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:29.999
you have happy memories of her.
I mean, they were the best,
00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:34.999
you know…as far as the old… I don’t want to say this
to the old people, but they were the best as far as
00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:39.999
showing you the things that really were
nice and warm, you know. Yes, I think…
00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:44.999
I think all of us as we get beyond
that, we really miss it, don’t we?
00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:49.999
We do. All I can say is Sunday is a
beautiful day. Well, that’s good to hear,
00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:54.999
and I hope you enjoy your bird game. I will. We win or lose,
we all… my friends out there and we’ll have a lot of fun.
00:11:55.000 --> 00:11:59.999
Good, thank you for talking. Bye-bye.
00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:04.999
Could you see the tears come to his
eyes as he said that? Are you happy?
00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:09.999
Oh, certainly I am. Notre Dame won yesterday.
What if you were in the Michigan State,
00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:14.999
will that change your attitude today? Oh,
certainly. Oh, that’s really too bad.
00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:19.999
Oh, I hasn’t went to Notre Dame, so I was really
rooting for the Notre Dame team and I’m glad they won.
00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:24.999
You look happy. I am happy,
00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:29.999
I really am. You look happy too.
Right. Thank you, I am.
00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:34.999
And I met Jimmy Durante last night, I shook
his hand, he said, \"Thanks sweetheart.\"
00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:39.999
Oh, exciting. And then on our way out to Notre Dame,
we didn’t realize it until the 6 o’clock news
00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:44.999
but I guess Mr. Nixon and umm… Mr.
Dirksen and Mr. Reagan,
00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:49.999
what hotel were they at Bill, as we were
right down the street, at Michigan Avenue.
00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:54.999
We saw a whole lot of, you know,
policemen wondered what they were doing.
00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:59.999
What would you say if we walked to you and
said down the question to you, are you happy?
00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:04.999
Oh, girly. I don’t know really write off.
00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:09.999
It’s just hard to think of. Yeah. I am Sister Arné.
Your name? How do you do? I am Jay Malai Rah.
00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:14.999
This is Stippin Fetcher(ph). Sister
Campion. If I were to ask you
00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:19.999
if you were happy what would your
reaction be? Was I happy? Yeah,
00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:24.999
’cause I… I went to communions meeting. It’s
wonderful to see that’s what makes you happy.
00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:29.999
What about you, sir? Yeah, because I am daily communion. Oh, that’s
nice. Well, Stippin(ph) and I are old friends, we used to work with
00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:34.999
Shirley Temple and Will Rogers in pictures, you know, a
long time ago, and I haven’t seen him since Hollywood.
00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:39.999
I am the writer of one little candle, father killers
theme song for The Christophers.. Oh, my heaven.
00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:44.999
Me and Danny Thomas, when he broke down…
This is me and Sally Shirley Temple
00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:49.999
It’s me and Bill Roger..
It’s me and Robert Gulley.
00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:54.999
Yeah, he’s one of the best… one of
the best performers they ever had.
00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:59.999
Oh, it’s a list, are we very lucky? I’m afraid Hollywood’s,
most negro Hollywood motion pictures I ever had.
00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:04.999
Oh, that’s nice. Keep those, sisters.
What are you doing, sister, what’s this…
00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:09.999
Umm… We’re reading on kind of an experiment and just interviewing
people and finding out what makes them happy and what…
00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:14.999
What, do you think is the most important
thing to make you happy. Love.
00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:19.999
Love your fellowmen. Love
in faith and the future.
00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:24.999
And following every word that
Jesus wants is to follow.
00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:29.999
And loving even your enemies
to the nth degree. That’s it.
00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:34.999
I’m 76. Oh, my… But mine
has been daily commune,
00:14:35.000 --> 00:14:39.999
being kind of communion daily. That’s the… that’s
the greatest thing if you come here on earth…
00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:44.999
That’s the merriest thing you can
come to happen this on earth.
00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:49.999
Can you think of anything that
would make you happier? No.
00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:54.999
Not… I… I… I and I’ve had… I
have been… I’ve been (inaudible)
00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:59.999
at eight years ago, I used to
travel in the same kind of planes
00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:04.999
that (inaudible)drop in. I give you
pictures of me and little Rogers. Okay.
00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:09.999
Here’s a picture of me and little Rogers. That’s
Shirley Temple when she was a little girl,
00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:14.999
and he used to dance with her. Did money didn’t
make you happy? Yeah, I blew seven million dollars.
00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:23.000
But all during that time I was a daily
communion, and they, with all this,
00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:29.999
ain’t but one thing is, if everybody
could go the communion of (inaudible).
00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:34.999
Once a day, you know, there would
be no trouble in the world.
00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:39.999
Speaking about money, I wrote a little
poem, I put a song to it. And it’s,
00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:44.999
I’ll try to remember the words. God is
more than gold, more than we’ve been told,
00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:49.999
we shouldn’t mind a little rain,
when he can bring the sun again,
00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:54.999
it’s just a part of his domain for he is
more than gold. Don’t go on and doubt,
00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:59.999
don’t go on without, the love
that makes a robin sing,
00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:04.999
it changes winter into spring, of all the world
is, but one king and he is more than gold.
00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:09.999
Look at the stars in the
sky, the birds flying high,
00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:14.999
we never hear them complain, we are part of his
universe, so give no thought to your purse,
00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:19.999
or you’ll be living in vain.
God is more than gold,
00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:24.999
more than we’ve been told, so treat your
troubles to aspire and watch them fade away,
00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:29.999
you’ll find out in a little
while, they were meant to stay,
00:16:30.000 --> 00:16:34.999
for God is more so much more,
God is more than gold.
00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:39.999
Oh, my that’s beautiful. Well, thank you very much for sharing
your thought. God bless you. Nice meeting you both. Good bye now.
00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:44.999
Thank you.
00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:53.000
[music]
00:17:05.000 --> 00:17:09.999
Are these your children? No, these are (inaudible). We’re
just stopping people this morning, here comes Anna.
00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:14.999
We’re just asking them the question, \"Are they happy?\" What
would be some things that would contribute to your happiness?
00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:19.999
First of all, I think a
family feeling of closeness
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:24.999
and a feeling of self identity and knowing
who you are and where you’re going.
00:17:25.000 --> 00:17:29.999
And you? I agree. What would
make you unhappy do you think?
00:17:30.000 --> 00:17:34.999
Yeah, I think that I would
experience unhappiness
00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:39.999
if I… I didn’t feel a sense of identity,
00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:44.999
if I… I didn’t have certain
things to hold on to.
00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:49.999
And I would say a feeling of insecurity
would make me somewhat unhappy.
00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:54.999
My husband and his success
00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:59.999
and just living every day in general, my
good health, my family’s good health,
00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:04.999
that’s what makes me happy. Do you
feel people are as happy as you are?
00:18:05.000 --> 00:18:09.999
Well, not everyone, no,
that would be impossible
00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:14.999
I think for everyone to be as happy. Some
are and some aren’t. What are the things
00:18:15.000 --> 00:18:19.999
that cause unhappiness? Well,
I think it’s just the umm…
00:18:20.000 --> 00:18:24.999
the confusion in the
world and the way people
00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:29.999
can’t live together side by
side in love and brotherhood.
00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:34.999
I think these are some of the things,
and that some have and some don’t,
00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:39.999
that causes unhappiness in some people.
00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:44.999
The same thing, sister. Thank
you very much. Thank you.
00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:49.999
Okay. Could I ask you, are you happy?
00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:54.999
Yes, sister. What makes you happy?
What makes me happy?
00:18:55.000 --> 00:18:59.999
Well, I have a family, they’ve all been successful,
they graduated, gone to college and everything,
00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:04.999
and they’ve taken their place in the world and
they’re doing good, so it makes me happy.
00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:09.999
What are some things that you think
cause unhappiness? Uh… lack of
00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:14.999
a good home to live in and
the lack of parents. Uh…
00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:19.999
And then the… some people don’t have any
God, they have nothing to look forward to,
00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:24.999
their life isn’t full. They don’t go to
church and they don’t know anything,
00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:29.999
they’re… they’re lost. Right this
minute, I really don’t know,
00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:34.999
I am very happy, we have everything
that would possibly make us happy.
00:19:35.000 --> 00:19:39.999
My two sons are in Catholic school and
I think… I don’t think right now that
00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:44.999
there’s anything else that would make me happier.
Do you feel everyone is as happy as you are?
00:19:45.000 --> 00:19:49.999
No, unfortunately, they’re not. I don’t
think so. What causes their unhappiness?
00:19:50.000 --> 00:19:54.999
Umm… Well, first of all
00:19:55.000 --> 00:19:59.999
we know that there’s always a monetary thing and I’m
sure most families don’t have as much as we do,
00:20:00.000 --> 00:20:04.999
we’re very fortunate in that,
we do have what we do, and uh…
00:20:05.000 --> 00:20:09.999
then a lot of people don’t live the way we do. A lot
of people don’t have the advantages that we have,
00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:14.999
we live in a very lovely
parish and the people do try.
00:20:15.000 --> 00:20:19.999
We try to get along together and a lot
of people aren’t fortunate in this way.
00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:24.999
Thank you very much. You’re welcome.
00:20:25.000 --> 00:20:29.999
[sil.]
00:20:30.000 --> 00:20:34.999
I think that I have a wonderful family
and that we’re together here today.
00:20:35.000 --> 00:20:39.999
Are you always happy? No, I don’t
think anyone is always happy.
00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:44.999
What are some of the things
that would make you unhappy?
00:20:45.000 --> 00:20:49.999
All the present conflict that we are having
right now with the Vietnam situation.
00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:54.999
Uh… the fact that there are so many people
around the country that are starving
00:20:55.000 --> 00:20:59.999
living in poverty stricken areas,
that we don’t seem to be able
00:21:00.000 --> 00:21:04.999
to find the answers to the questions, these are
some of the things. What would be something
00:21:05.000 --> 00:21:09.999
that would be opposed to happiness in your
life personally besides the world situation.
00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:14.999
Oh, if we were to have a…
00:21:15.000 --> 00:21:19.999
a magic answer I guess for
all of the social ills
00:21:20.000 --> 00:21:24.999
and we try to apply this to people across the
country, I think just would make me unhappy.
00:21:25.000 --> 00:21:29.999
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much sir.
00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:34.999
Okay.
00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:39.999
I’m very happy with my family life, we have a
wonderful family and life, three lovely children
00:21:40.000 --> 00:21:44.999
and we’re working hard to guide them and
discipline them properly so that they can be
00:21:45.000 --> 00:21:49.999
law abiding citizens and
learn to accept life,
00:21:50.000 --> 00:21:54.999
work hard, expect to get
things by working hard,
00:21:55.000 --> 00:21:59.999
and to discipline themselves and
conform to a society and so forth.
00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:04.999
We have to learn to take some failure
00:22:05.000 --> 00:22:09.999
and use failures as a stepping stone to success, and
whatever endeavor they attempt to go into whether
00:22:10.000 --> 00:22:14.999
it’s a school or sports or anything,
if it’s just taking part in
00:22:15.000 --> 00:22:19.999
some phase of enjoyment, there
will be let down and improvement.
00:22:20.000 --> 00:22:24.999
Thank you very much. Thank you very much.
Pardon me. Could we talk to you for a minute?
00:22:25.000 --> 00:22:29.999
I can’t get his attention. Excuse me, could
I ask you a question. Are you happy?
00:22:30.000 --> 00:22:34.999
Yes. What makes you happy? What
makes me happy? I enjoy life.
00:22:35.000 --> 00:22:39.999
Well, what about living is nice?
00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:48.000
[sil.]
00:22:50.000 --> 00:22:54.999
Is it the people or the… the circumstances or… People…
people are nice, good to me and they were all there. So…
00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:59.999
What would make you unhappy. Uh…
00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:04.999
I see…
00:23:05.000 --> 00:23:09.999
I don’t know. I always try to look on the
brighter side of things and everything.
00:23:10.000 --> 00:23:14.999
So I don’t have any idea, I don’t know what will make
me unhappy. You don’t try to think about unhappiness?
00:23:15.000 --> 00:23:19.999
Yeah. Do you think thinking happy
makes you happy? It helps.
00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:24.999
To be able to uh… participate
in the activities of life
00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:29.999
with the best of health. Can
you think of some things
00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:34.999
that would make you unhappy? Well, yes,
00:23:35.000 --> 00:23:39.999
the war that’s about it. And young boys
00:23:40.000 --> 00:23:44.999
fighting over in Vietnam.
They die so young.
00:23:45.000 --> 00:23:53.000
[music]
00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:14.999
Can I ask you a question? Are you happy?
00:24:15.000 --> 00:24:19.999
Yeah. What makes you happy?
Being happily married.
00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:24.999
Could we ask you? Are you happy? Yeah.
00:24:25.000 --> 00:24:29.999
What makes you happy? Nothing
to be unhappy about.
00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:34.999
Are you… Are you always happy? Oh, no.
00:24:35.000 --> 00:24:39.999
I think I’m always happy to have
to be half crazy. Do you uh…
00:24:40.000 --> 00:24:44.999
think most people are happy?
Yeah, I think so.
00:24:45.000 --> 00:24:49.999
Excuse me, what are some of the
things that make you unhappy?
00:24:50.000 --> 00:24:54.999
Work. No, I don’t know.
00:24:55.000 --> 00:24:59.999
Wait, why did you come here today?
I want to see all the new things.
00:25:00.000 --> 00:25:04.999
Are you interested in math?
I ain’t so smart at it.
00:25:05.000 --> 00:25:09.999
Are you? No. Just looking through the head.
00:25:10.000 --> 00:25:14.999
Are you happy here at the exhibit? Well, I enjoy
very much indeed, it’s a mathematics exhibit
00:25:15.000 --> 00:25:19.999
and I’m a mathematician, so of course I enjoy
it. What do you… What do you like about it?
00:25:20.000 --> 00:25:24.999
I mean does it, do you think it’s offers
a lot to the people who come here?
00:25:25.000 --> 00:25:29.999
Well, I think it offers different
things to different people.
00:25:30.000 --> 00:25:34.999
I doubt whether they all get the same thing out of it that I
get, but I hope presumably are enjoying it, so that would go to
00:25:35.000 --> 00:25:39.999
some other exhibit in the exhibition of which
I’m sure there are plenty. Are you happy?
00:25:40.000 --> 00:25:44.999
Yes, very. Are you happier here in America?
00:25:45.000 --> 00:25:49.999
That’s an interesting question.
Umm… I like many things in America.
00:25:50.000 --> 00:25:54.999
I… I think there’s a great deal of discontent. I think
that people are very worried about lots of things.
00:25:55.000 --> 00:25:59.999
And particularly you see
that if you watch television
00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:04.999
or listen to news broadcasts and it is considerable
dissatisfaction with many facets of the life.
00:26:05.000 --> 00:26:09.999
I’m sure of that. I make
a living and that’s all
00:26:10.000 --> 00:26:14.999
what the difference? What would you say
00:26:15.000 --> 00:26:19.999
would be some things that
would make you unhappy?
00:26:20.000 --> 00:26:24.999
Well, I mean, you mean, making unhappy?
00:26:25.000 --> 00:26:29.999
Well, I think if I have been in some… some other
country like, probably like, Soviet Union I’d be not…
00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:34.999
not happy. But I’m happy in United States.
00:26:35.000 --> 00:26:39.999
What things in the United States make you happy? Oh,
there’s democracy, I could do what I like, you know.
00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:44.999
What… What… what… sorry. We are
stopping you and asking you a question.
00:26:45.000 --> 00:26:49.999
Are you happy? Yes, I think so. Yes.
00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:54.999
What are some things that have made
you happy? Well, the knowledge
00:26:55.000 --> 00:26:59.999
that one has more good things happening
to one every day than bad things.
00:27:00.000 --> 00:27:04.999
What would you add to that?
00:27:05.000 --> 00:27:09.999
Why I am happy? Well, because I think you
learn, you’re learning something new every day
00:27:10.000 --> 00:27:14.999
and it’s good to love, it’s good loving. What
would be some things that would make you unhappy?
00:27:15.000 --> 00:27:19.999
People who don’t,
00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:24.999
who listen dogmatically and that
they… they think themselves
00:27:25.000 --> 00:27:29.999
as self-righteous that they try and force
other people at the point of a gun.
00:27:30.000 --> 00:27:34.999
I think this type of thinking ‘causes, this is the only thing which
causes strife that’s people not understanding the other people.
00:27:35.000 --> 00:27:39.999
And this is the only thing which
makes me unhappy otherwise,
00:27:40.000 --> 00:27:44.999
you know, I can take most
tragedies, (inaudible).
00:27:45.000 --> 00:27:49.999
Probably the lack of communication. Yes,
that’s right. Yes. And the egoism of people.
00:27:50.000 --> 00:27:54.999
The egoism of people.
00:27:55.000 --> 00:27:59.999
So that would make you unhappy then?
Yes, but although I… I…
00:28:00.000 --> 00:28:04.999
I believe that, you know, things that
would change, I believe in humanity
00:28:05.000 --> 00:28:09.999
and humanity will progress no matter what.
So that, dampens down the sadness.
00:28:10.000 --> 00:28:14.999
Thank you very much. Thank you very much.
Pleasure. Bye-bye.
00:28:15.000 --> 00:28:19.999
When you feel you’re not alone, you’re
most happy, that’s what I would say.
00:28:20.000 --> 00:28:24.999
Would… What would make you unhappy then? Being
alone, feeling that you’re the only person,
00:28:25.000 --> 00:28:29.999
no one is interested in you except
yourself, would make you unhappy.
00:28:30.000 --> 00:28:34.999
What do you think? It’s about the same.
We have a lot of the same ideas.
00:28:35.000 --> 00:28:39.999
What would make you happier in life?
Happier in life?
00:28:40.000 --> 00:28:44.999
Probably if I was more
consistent with my beliefs.
00:28:45.000 --> 00:28:49.999
Say some more about that,
that’s interesting. Well,
00:28:50.000 --> 00:28:54.999
lots of times you feel that you should do something, if you don’t do it
you’re unhappy. This can go away from studying, if you feel you should study,
00:28:55.000 --> 00:28:59.999
you don’t study, your unhappy, or if you feel you
should do something, perhaps even show affection,
00:29:00.000 --> 00:29:04.999
you don’t do that, this makes you unhappy. In a more consistence
you are with what you believe or think you should believe,
00:29:05.000 --> 00:29:09.999
the more you do that the
more happy you are.
00:29:10.000 --> 00:29:14.999
What do you think causes you not to do the thing that
you believe you should do? Mostly fear, mostly fear.
00:29:15.000 --> 00:29:19.999
You’re afraid of showing yourself. Uh… if you show
yourself then you might expose yourself to rejection.
00:29:20.000 --> 00:29:24.999
If you do that, you’re unhappy.
Chicken out.
00:29:25.000 --> 00:29:29.999
Do you have anything you’d like to
add that would make you unhappy?
00:29:30.000 --> 00:29:34.999
That would make me unhappy? No, I don’t have
anything that would make me more unhappy.
00:29:35.000 --> 00:29:39.999
If more people were happy and they didn’t
have all the problems, you know, no money,
00:29:40.000 --> 00:29:44.999
and like we just came down the subway, it is so pathetic,
you know, like it was bad doors, all the trash around,
00:29:45.000 --> 00:29:49.999
I think people really live there all the time.
Things like that I think wouldn’t make me happier,
00:29:50.000 --> 00:29:54.999
but there’s really nothing a person
can do about it either, one person.
00:29:55.000 --> 00:29:59.999
[sil.]
00:30:00.000 --> 00:30:04.999
Well, I think always Jesus Christ
and that’s what makes me happy.
00:30:05.000 --> 00:30:09.999
Like somebody here I guess.
It’s about all, (inaudible).
00:30:10.000 --> 00:30:14.999
That’s everything, put it that way.
All right.
00:30:15.000 --> 00:30:20.000
Thank you very much.
00:31:50.000 --> 00:31:58.000
[sil.]
