This short dramatic film brings to life the classic Charlotte Perkins Gilman story of the same name, which has become an important addition to American literature course curricula. Set in the late 1800s, the story features Elizabeth, an aspiring writer who becomes ill and is forced by her doctor and her husband to take a "rest cure." Completely isolated, her mind creates a world inside the wallpaper in her room-a world in which a woman is trapped and unable to escape.
"Useful and instructive...I have used this film extensively in women's studies and creative writing courses."

00:00:08.407 --> 00:00:10.990
(uneasy music)
00:01:24.544 --> 00:01:27.461
(fast-paced music)
00:01:45.170 --> 00:01:46.240
- Hello, sister.
00:01:53.136 --> 00:01:56.234
(excited murmurs)
00:01:56.234 --> 00:01:57.567
- Oh, thank you.
00:02:02.110 --> 00:02:03.653
- Dr. Barkley at your service.
00:02:04.610 --> 00:02:06.460
- Does the doctor prescribed bedrest?
00:02:09.760 --> 00:02:10.753
- Absolutely.
00:02:18.260 --> 00:02:19.677
Treatment\'s very simple.
00:02:21.384 --> 00:02:24.170
There\'s no need for drugs, tonics...
00:02:26.060 --> 00:02:27.490
Unless, of course...
00:02:27.490 --> 00:02:28.323
- Unless what?
00:02:29.870 --> 00:02:32.530
- [Dr. Barkley] You needn\'t
concern yourself about that.
00:02:32.530 --> 00:02:34.693
It\'s just important that
you follow the plan.
00:02:43.930 --> 00:02:45.253
- Oh, it frightens me so,
00:02:46.340 --> 00:02:48.033
to think I might not get better.
00:02:49.750 --> 00:02:51.210
I\'ve not been myself for a year.
00:02:51.210 --> 00:02:52.523
What if it doesn\'t work?
00:02:57.790 --> 00:02:59.860
Spending the entire summer in this room
00:02:59.860 --> 00:03:02.550
with everything planned for me,
00:03:02.550 --> 00:03:06.900
what I eat, who I see,
what I do, in isolation?
00:03:06.900 --> 00:03:08.653
Now, how can that be good for me?
00:03:11.420 --> 00:03:12.450
- [Dr. Barkley] Elizabeth...
00:03:12.450 --> 00:03:17.393
- I feel I need people,
activity, time for my writing.
00:03:18.260 --> 00:03:20.313
- That\'s exactly what you don\'t need.
00:03:24.810 --> 00:03:25.923
- That is what I want.
00:03:28.300 --> 00:03:30.463
- The rest cure is very successful.
00:03:31.580 --> 00:03:33.650
It\'s worked for most of my patients.
00:03:33.650 --> 00:03:35.153
- [Elizabeth] Maybe I\'m different.
00:03:36.550 --> 00:03:37.550
- You are different.
00:03:39.020 --> 00:03:42.080
(knocking at the door)
00:03:42.080 --> 00:03:42.963
Come in, Jenny.
00:03:47.866 --> 00:03:49.699
- I came for the tray.
00:03:51.960 --> 00:03:53.310
Beautiful day.
00:03:53.310 --> 00:03:55.260
- Yes, we were just talking about that.
00:04:04.910 --> 00:04:05.743
Trust me.
00:04:12.653 --> 00:04:15.653
(Elizabeth sighing)
00:04:26.448 --> 00:04:29.031
(gentle music)
00:04:41.582 --> 00:04:44.400
- [Elizabeth Voice-Over] John
does not know how I suffer.
00:04:44.400 --> 00:04:47.210
He thinks there is no reason to suffer,
00:04:47.210 --> 00:04:48.477
and that satisfies him.
00:04:51.820 --> 00:04:55.313
The things I see, he
says aren\'t really there.
00:04:57.740 --> 00:04:59.543
He says it\'s my nervous condition,
00:05:01.300 --> 00:05:02.420
but the wallpaper...
00:05:04.165 --> 00:05:05.317
But the wallpaper...
00:05:05.317 --> 00:05:07.848
(music sours)
00:05:07.848 --> 00:05:09.015
The wallpaper.
00:05:12.888 --> 00:05:14.646
(knocking at door)
00:05:14.646 --> 00:05:17.313
(door creaking)
00:05:19.379 --> 00:05:22.379
(Elizabeth sighing)
00:05:29.639 --> 00:05:32.389
- [Jenny] Time for your medicine.
00:05:34.590 --> 00:05:35.423
- So soon?
00:05:38.395 --> 00:05:41.395
(Elizabeth sighing)
00:06:06.405 --> 00:06:07.738
What do you see?
00:06:26.978 --> 00:06:30.228
(Elizabeth swallowing)
00:06:39.904 --> 00:06:40.737
Jenny?
00:06:44.363 --> 00:06:46.280
Please don\'t tell John.
00:06:49.613 --> 00:06:52.196
(uneasy music)
00:07:07.043 --> 00:07:07.876
Someone...
00:07:10.032 --> 00:07:10.865
Please...
00:07:13.603 --> 00:07:14.436
Listen.
00:07:16.523 --> 00:07:19.606
(uneasy tense music)
00:07:32.497 --> 00:07:34.170
- [Dr. Barkley] Elizabeth,
what are you doing?
00:07:34.170 --> 00:07:37.951
(Elizabeth gasping)
00:07:37.951 --> 00:07:38.784
- Shh.
00:07:40.935 --> 00:07:42.900
- [Dr. Barkley] Elizabeth.
00:07:42.900 --> 00:07:44.242
- There\'s a woman in there.
00:07:44.242 --> 00:07:45.080
(shocked music)
00:07:45.080 --> 00:07:46.183
She\'s trapped!
00:07:46.183 --> 00:07:47.016
(shocked music)
00:07:47.016 --> 00:07:48.325
She calls to me!
00:07:48.325 --> 00:07:49.158
(shocked music)
00:07:49.158 --> 00:07:50.509
Never any rest!
00:07:50.509 --> 00:07:53.574
I have to get out; I have to leave!
00:07:53.574 --> 00:07:55.481
Leave this house!
00:07:55.481 --> 00:07:56.981
I can\'t stay here!
00:07:58.190 --> 00:08:00.419
I\'m so frightened; you must help me.
00:08:00.419 --> 00:08:03.030
You must take me away from here; help me.
00:08:03.030 --> 00:08:04.577
Please, help me, help me.
00:08:04.577 --> 00:08:07.577
(Elizabeth sobbing)
00:08:10.148 --> 00:08:12.769
- [Soft Woman\'s Voice] I need you.
00:08:12.769 --> 00:08:13.686
I need you.
00:08:21.878 --> 00:08:24.545
(wood creaking)
00:08:27.310 --> 00:08:29.133
- [Dr. Barkley] A lot
of calls this summer.
00:08:32.240 --> 00:08:35.615
Seems like all my calls
this week have been cold.
00:08:35.615 --> 00:08:38.190
(curious music)
00:08:38.190 --> 00:08:39.023
That Charlotte
00:08:42.179 --> 00:08:43.994
I delivered her two fine twin boys...
00:08:43.994 --> 00:08:48.994
(curious music drowns
out Dr. Barkley\'s words)
00:08:50.102 --> 00:08:52.935
(music speeds up)
00:08:55.650 --> 00:08:58.983
(music cuts off)
- Wait!
00:09:03.040 --> 00:09:04.567
She\'s so lovely.
00:09:10.230 --> 00:09:12.993
- You must not give
way to these fantasies.
00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:17.113
- She\'s me.
00:09:20.800 --> 00:09:22.253
She has to go away.
00:09:24.920 --> 00:09:25.753
- I know.
00:09:27.450 --> 00:09:30.458
(fabric rustling)
00:09:30.458 --> 00:09:32.111
(knocking at door)
00:09:32.111 --> 00:09:34.270
- [Jenny] Elizabeth, your supper.
00:09:34.270 --> 00:09:36.853
(joyful music)
00:09:46.067 --> 00:09:46.900
- Come in.
00:09:48.327 --> 00:09:51.077
(music cuts off)
00:10:04.863 --> 00:10:07.463
I\'ll leave the tray
outside when I\'m finished.
00:10:08.394 --> 00:10:11.061
(curious music)
00:10:19.406 --> 00:10:22.073
(paper tearing)
00:10:36.081 --> 00:10:38.664
(uneasy music)
00:10:41.100 --> 00:10:43.311
(knocking at door)
00:10:43.311 --> 00:10:44.608
- [Dr. Barkley] Elizabeth.
00:10:44.608 --> 00:10:45.695
(knocking at door)
00:10:45.695 --> 00:10:47.825
(doorknob jiggles)
00:10:47.825 --> 00:10:48.800
Elizabeth?
00:10:48.800 --> 00:10:49.633
(knocking at door)
00:10:49.633 --> 00:10:50.524
For God\'s sake, open the door!
00:10:50.524 --> 00:10:51.498
(frantic pounding)
00:10:51.498 --> 00:10:55.581
(music cuts off as door unlocks)
00:10:56.919 --> 00:11:00.252
(creeping uneasy music)
00:11:22.631 --> 00:11:24.631
- You can\'t put me back.
00:11:32.251 --> 00:11:35.668
(sour bittersweet music)
