In A Tail of Identity, we meet three "furries": people who feel, deep-down inside, that being human actually constrains who they are, and they prefer dressing up as animal characters. These men reveal, with incredible honesty and humor, what it means to feel more like themselves when dressed as an animal than they do in their own skin.

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.533
You know I get these experiences
00:00:01.534 --> 00:00:03.800
that other people would pay
a lot of money for like...
00:00:03.801 --> 00:00:06.299
I was standing there having a
conversation with a kangaroo
00:00:06.300 --> 00:00:08.266
about who was the better Dr. Who.
00:00:08.267 --> 00:00:09.766
You know I was thinking like,
00:00:09.767 --> 00:00:11.533
usually you have to take a lot of drugs
00:00:11.534 --> 00:00:12.933
to have that conversation,
00:00:12.934 --> 00:00:16.100
you know, but I was getting it for free.
00:00:20.801 --> 00:00:22.299
I\'ve always believed that
00:00:22.300 --> 00:00:23.833
I\'ve been a rat.
00:00:23.834 --> 00:00:25.900
And I like to say that
00:00:25.901 --> 00:00:28.434
I was born a rat and I will die a rat.
00:00:33.033 --> 00:00:36.266
I didn\'t choose the rat,
00:00:36.267 --> 00:00:39.800
who would want to be a rat? It\'s
not a very glamorous species,
00:00:39.801 --> 00:00:42.366
I believe the rat chose me.
00:00:42.367 --> 00:00:44.733
I remember as a kid seeing
00:00:44.734 --> 00:00:47.500
the Philly Fanatic and just loving it
00:00:47.501 --> 00:00:51.399
And I loved baseball I followed
it very closely and watched
00:00:51.400 --> 00:00:54.266
the game and everything but
whenever I saw the Fanatic
00:00:54.267 --> 00:00:56.433
I was watching the Fanatic more
than I was watching the game.
00:00:56.434 --> 00:01:02.066
The act of putting on a mask
is a very profound thing.
00:01:02.067 --> 00:01:04.266
For example someone might be very shy
00:01:04.267 --> 00:01:05.566
when they are not in the suit,
00:01:05.567 --> 00:01:07.867
they put the suit on suddenly
they are the life of the party.
00:01:07.868 --> 00:01:12.399
It\'s funny that putting on a
mask allows you to be yourself.
00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:14.199
But, it\'s hard to be
00:01:14.200 --> 00:01:16.933
bouncy and happy
00:01:16.934 --> 00:01:21.333
and interact with strangers in this world
00:01:21.334 --> 00:01:23.466
if you are a normal human being because
00:01:23.467 --> 00:01:25.900
people don\'t do that.
00:01:25.901 --> 00:01:27.199
I mean, that\'s crazy.
00:01:27.200 --> 00:01:29.433
But if you are in a mascot costume
00:01:29.434 --> 00:01:31.267
you can do it!
00:01:40.267 --> 00:01:42.700
One of my furry friends
calls me a metafurry,
00:01:42.701 --> 00:01:44.833
which I think is a pretty good description.
00:01:44.834 --> 00:01:47.634
I am a fan of the fandom.
00:01:48.501 --> 00:01:51.333
The furry fandom is a sub culture
00:01:51.334 --> 00:01:55.633
that is centered around
anthropomorphic animals.
00:01:55.634 --> 00:01:58.700
The fursuiters are sort of the
ones that go the whole hog.
00:01:58.701 --> 00:02:01.399
They actually get full body suits made.
00:02:01.400 --> 00:02:04.166
These suits are incredible
I mean when you see them.
00:02:04.167 --> 00:02:05.933
Either you spend thousands of dollars
00:02:05.934 --> 00:02:08.166
getting a custom made suit for you
00:02:08.167 --> 00:02:10.233
or you take the time and energy to
00:02:10.234 --> 00:02:11.734
learn how to make a suit yourself.
00:02:14.367 --> 00:02:16.999
I know furries who are mechanics.
I know furries
00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:18.700
who are in the military.
00:02:18.701 --> 00:02:21.700
I know furries who are unemployed
00:02:21.701 --> 00:02:23.933
and living in their parent\'s basement.
00:02:23.934 --> 00:02:26.032
It is the whole realm of humanity.
00:02:26.033 --> 00:02:28.333
There\'s a geek chart.
00:02:28.334 --> 00:02:30.099
Furries are at the very
bottom of that chart
00:02:30.100 --> 00:02:32.733
and I\'ve shown this to
all of my furry friends
00:02:32.734 --> 00:02:34.533
and they all totally own it.
00:02:34.534 --> 00:02:36.299
They are like, \"Yup that\'s right.
00:02:36.300 --> 00:02:38.867
We are there at the bottom of that chart.\"
00:02:38.868 --> 00:02:40.900
And they are fine with that.
00:02:40.901 --> 00:02:43.066
And that\'s kind of one of the
things that I admire about it.
00:02:43.067 --> 00:02:45.299
The whole fandom is that,
you know, they\'re,
00:02:45.300 --> 00:02:46.666
They are doing this thing that
00:02:46.667 --> 00:02:48.366
everybody thinks is the
dorkiest thing in the world
00:02:48.367 --> 00:02:50.032
and they don\'t care.
00:02:50.033 --> 00:02:52.066
They are just doing it anyway
cause they love to do it.
00:02:52.067 --> 00:02:53.433
And I really admire that.
00:02:53.434 --> 00:02:56.066
Rattus has lots of friends.
00:02:56.067 --> 00:02:57.299
He knows lots of people
00:02:57.300 --> 00:03:00.166
or lots of people know him.
00:03:00.167 --> 00:03:03.999
Whereas I\'m not so well
known in my human form.
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:08.100
Being furry is an important
part of my personal identity.
00:03:10.634 --> 00:03:13.633
I think rats get a lot of negative press
00:03:13.634 --> 00:03:15.800
in western society.
00:03:15.801 --> 00:03:19.333
I want to try to present
my own counter to that.
00:03:19.334 --> 00:03:23.999
Rattus is almost a very political creation,
00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:28.700
he\'s about trying to say
to the general community
00:03:28.701 --> 00:03:32.266
that hey, rats are OK,
00:03:32.267 --> 00:03:34.566
you don\'t have to despise them.
00:03:34.567 --> 00:03:39.099
Early on, wearing Rattus, I
was actually disappointed at
00:03:39.100 --> 00:03:41.299
how many people thought I was a mouse
00:03:41.300 --> 00:03:44.199
rather than a rat, which is,
00:03:44.200 --> 00:03:45.700
to me, as a rat,
00:03:45.701 --> 00:03:49.733
is a little insulting.
00:03:49.734 --> 00:03:57.734
It\'s as if Rattus hasn\'t brought
out his rat-ness appropriately.
00:04:00.400 --> 00:04:04.633
Previously I\'ve always felt
as if I was, ironically,
00:04:04.634 --> 00:04:06.633
wearing a mask.
00:04:06.634 --> 00:04:11.266
Only showing a carefully
censored version of myself.
00:04:11.267 --> 00:04:15.700
So that I could fit in. But,
00:04:15.701 --> 00:04:20.166
in the furry community I
feel as if this is me.
00:04:20.167 --> 00:04:22.666
I can be who I am.
00:04:22.667 --> 00:04:28.032
And I can express what
I feel on the inside.
00:04:28.033 --> 00:04:36.033
They understand what I mean
when I say that I am a rat.
00:04:36.434 --> 00:04:37.434
I was the shy one.
00:04:37.435 --> 00:04:40.933
I was never one who would ever
00:04:40.934 --> 00:04:43.066
perform in any capacity
00:04:43.067 --> 00:04:45.299
I always had stage fright.
00:04:45.300 --> 00:04:47.500
It was scary to me!
00:04:47.501 --> 00:04:51.533
I didn\'t have that in me, I thought.
00:04:51.534 --> 00:04:54.066
It was just an amazing
00:04:54.067 --> 00:04:57.333
experience to find out that I\'m
really not alone in this world.
00:04:57.334 --> 00:05:00.066
There\'s something really special
00:05:00.067 --> 00:05:03.399
about making a stranger smile.
00:05:03.400 --> 00:05:07.233
I have to admit from my own
little selfish perspective,
00:05:07.234 --> 00:05:11.066
it\'s very powerful to me
because inside that head
00:05:11.067 --> 00:05:12.933
I am smiling ear to ear,
00:05:12.934 --> 00:05:15.967
it just brings me great joy.
00:05:15.968 --> 00:05:19.633
Rats are evil, they make
you fall in love with them
00:05:19.634 --> 00:05:21.934
and then break your heart by dying.
00:05:24.801 --> 00:05:29.433
I had two pet rats,
00:05:29.434 --> 00:05:33.900
sadly both of them have passed away,
00:05:33.901 --> 00:05:39.800
And it was the most painful
thing I\'ve ever gone through,
00:05:39.801 --> 00:05:45.199
holding his little body in my hands,
00:05:45.200 --> 00:05:48.433
and he was convulsing, he had a stroke.
00:05:48.434 --> 00:05:53.933
And I knew I was going to
have to take him to the vet
00:05:53.934 --> 00:05:57.500
to have him put down, and
00:05:57.501 --> 00:06:03.399
it was the most awful
experience of my life.
00:06:03.400 --> 00:06:07.433
I took the responsibility
of ending his life.
00:06:07.434 --> 00:06:10.166
I\'ve buried him in the front garden where
00:06:10.167 --> 00:06:14.099
I can still be close to
him in that respect.
00:06:14.100 --> 00:06:18.533
I envied my pet rats.
00:06:18.534 --> 00:06:21.233
They didn\'t have to think
about being a rat,
00:06:21.234 --> 00:06:25.266
they just were, and that
was their whole life.
00:06:25.267 --> 00:06:27.566
They were ratty.
00:06:27.567 --> 00:06:29.500
They didn\'t have to be channeling it or
00:06:29.501 --> 00:06:34.333
thinking about what it means to be a rat.
00:06:34.334 --> 00:06:37.533
I feel as if I\'m a rat
trapped in a human\'s body.
00:06:37.534 --> 00:06:42.399
I\'m then constrained by what it means
00:06:42.400 --> 00:06:45.733
to be human, and so, I
00:06:45.734 --> 00:06:49.067
have to start afresh to express my ratness.
00:06:50.200 --> 00:06:54.633
For some people, you can
definitely see where the fursona
00:06:54.634 --> 00:06:58.700
that they create is like the missing part
00:06:58.701 --> 00:07:00.867
of their personality.
00:07:00.868 --> 00:07:04.967
It\'s an extreme form of
trying to find yourself.
00:07:04.968 --> 00:07:07.933
And for some of these
people finding who they are
00:07:07.934 --> 00:07:12.500
means becoming not a human.
00:07:12.501 --> 00:07:14.867
It\'s funny, cause if you are
00:07:14.868 --> 00:07:17.099
being this really
00:07:17.100 --> 00:07:22.032
joyful character, you become
that joyful character.
00:07:22.033 --> 00:07:23.233
Once I had a taste
00:07:23.234 --> 00:07:24.934
of that I wanted more of it.
00:07:27.934 --> 00:07:31.766
I can\'t wait to see where it takes me next.
00:07:31.767 --> 00:07:39.767
There will come a time that I
will have to retire Rattus.
00:07:40.534 --> 00:07:43.433
He\'s going to become threadbare.
00:07:43.434 --> 00:07:45.233
I find that notion personally
00:07:45.234 --> 00:07:47.032
very painful, because
00:07:47.033 --> 00:07:52.199
when that day comes I\'m going to
be giving up part of who I am.
00:07:52.200 --> 00:07:55.199
Being in the room with
a guy in a bunny suit
00:07:55.200 --> 00:07:56.633
or a fox suit or whatever,
00:07:56.634 --> 00:07:58.733
is always weird,
00:07:58.734 --> 00:08:00.434
no matter how many times you do it.
00:08:01.968 --> 00:08:03.501
I am a huge Star Wars nerd.
00:08:05.200 --> 00:08:08.999
Although I haven\'t actually
been to a Star Wars convention
00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:11.767
I do own some Jedi robes.
00:08:13.367 --> 00:08:16.299
I know what it is to love something
00:08:16.300 --> 00:08:18.333
that most people think is silly.
00:08:18.334 --> 00:08:20.233
And so I think I that\'s part of why
00:08:20.234 --> 00:08:22.433
I get along pretty well
with the furries because
00:08:22.434 --> 00:08:26.133
I speak geek.
