00:00:01.918 --> 00:00:03.503
(Reel rattles)
00:00:12.762 --> 00:00:14.222
Preetinder: I think growing up
00:00:14.347 --> 00:00:18.018
- I always associated
- my faith with family.
00:00:19.436 --> 00:00:22.689
- The guru Aasaanji,
- is our living guru,
00:00:22.814 --> 00:00:24.774
- and we can consider
- the guru Aasaanji
00:00:24.899 --> 00:00:27.944
- to be above all human beings
- to be our king
00:00:28.069 --> 00:00:30.280
- and the embodiment
- of all of our teachings.
00:00:30.405 --> 00:00:31.781
(Praying quietly)
00:00:33.158 --> 00:00:34.784
In every home that we've had,
00:00:34.909 --> 00:00:37.120
- we've had a guru Aasaanji
- in the home.
00:00:37.245 --> 00:00:38.288
- He's definitely part
- of our family.
00:00:40.957 --> 00:00:42.792
- My mom she likes to do
- in the morning
00:00:42.917 --> 00:00:44.419
- is she'll go to
- the prayer room
00:00:44.544 --> 00:00:46.838
and she'll do the ardas first.
00:00:46.963 --> 00:00:48.798
After that she'll go
00:00:48.923 --> 00:00:50.967
- and she will open
- the Granth Sahib,
00:00:51.092 --> 00:00:54.554
- where the page opens
- she'll read that passage
00:00:54.679 --> 00:00:56.222
and that that will remain open
00:00:56.348 --> 00:00:57.932
for the rest of the day.
00:00:59.768 --> 00:01:00.852
(Praying quietly)
00:01:02.854 --> 00:01:05.273
- - My mom designed
- and built this house.
00:01:05.398 --> 00:01:07.233
- We had a Sikh architect
- as well,
00:01:07.359 --> 00:01:09.402
- and so when he was designing
- our house
00:01:09.527 --> 00:01:11.696
he and my mom both decided
00:01:11.821 --> 00:01:14.199
- to have the guru Aasaanji's
- room
00:01:14.324 --> 00:01:16.618
- right at the front
- of the house.
00:01:18.495 --> 00:01:20.413
It's a very quiet area.
00:01:20.538 --> 00:01:22.415
There's no floors above it.
00:01:24.125 --> 00:01:26.670
- I think that it reflects
- this part of our life,
00:01:26.795 --> 00:01:28.713
our spiritual life.
00:01:28.838 --> 00:01:30.799
(Praying quietly)
00:01:33.468 --> 00:01:35.428
- The evening prayer's
- called Rehras.
00:01:35.553 --> 00:01:37.472
Praying with Manbwit,
00:01:37.597 --> 00:01:39.808
- it does I think strengthen
- our marriage,
00:01:39.933 --> 00:01:42.811
- in that we have a specific
- activity,
00:01:42.936 --> 00:01:44.646
a specific moment of our day
00:01:44.771 --> 00:01:46.731
- that we choose to spend
- with each other
00:01:46.856 --> 00:01:50.026
- in the company of our guru
- of our guru Ransad.
00:01:52.362 --> 00:01:55.615
- I'm not that fluent in Gurbani
- or even Punjabi.
00:01:55.740 --> 00:01:57.283
Manbwit's much better than me,
00:01:57.409 --> 00:02:01.496
- but that also makes me a lot
- more careful than he is
00:02:01.621 --> 00:02:04.040
- because he is a native
- Punjabi speaker,
00:02:04.165 --> 00:02:05.959
- and I've learned it.
- Like I went to school,
00:02:06.084 --> 00:02:08.670
- and I learned it
- grammatically.
00:02:08.795 --> 00:02:10.880
- So he'll read it
- just like he's reading,
00:02:11.006 --> 00:02:12.298
you know, the newspaper.
00:02:12.424 --> 00:02:14.300
- It's very second nature
- to him.
00:02:14.426 --> 00:02:17.137
- It makes me more attentive
- in a way
00:02:17.262 --> 00:02:18.805
- because there's someone else
- with me
00:02:18.930 --> 00:02:21.141
- and we're coordinating
- together.
00:02:21.266 --> 00:02:23.977
- We're doing a shared
- sort of activity.
00:02:25.103 --> 00:02:27.022
(Singing)
00:02:32.944 --> 00:02:35.739
- Kirtan is, really is singing
- God's praises,
00:02:35.864 --> 00:02:38.116
- and for me like the beauty
- that I sense
00:02:38.241 --> 00:02:40.785
- and that I appreciate
- in Gurbani.
00:02:40.910 --> 00:02:42.746
When it's now being sung,
00:02:42.871 --> 00:02:45.081
- I'm able to give it even more
- attention
00:02:45.206 --> 00:02:48.668
- and I'm able to really connect
- with it on a much,
00:02:48.793 --> 00:02:50.128
I think, deeper level...
00:02:52.339 --> 00:02:54.758
- because it's, it becomes
- more real to me.
00:02:57.135 --> 00:02:59.763
(Playing the Harmonium)
00:03:02.849 --> 00:03:05.810
(Singing)
00:03:20.742 --> 00:03:24.079
(Singing)
00:03:36.883 --> 00:03:38.510
(Praying)
00:03:40.720 --> 00:03:42.597
- When we read from
- guru Aasaanji,
00:03:42.722 --> 00:03:44.557
- I'll usually stand with him
- if he's reading
00:03:44.683 --> 00:03:46.476
- or he'll stand by me
- if I'm reading
00:03:46.601 --> 00:03:48.395
- and we'll sort of read
- together.
00:03:48.520 --> 00:03:50.438
We try not to really interrupt
00:03:50.563 --> 00:03:52.232
- when the other person
- is doing it.
00:03:59.030 --> 00:04:00.740
It helps me if he's reading
00:04:00.865 --> 00:04:01.991
- and I'm singing
- at the same time
00:04:02.117 --> 00:04:03.910
- how he's able to read
- very fluently
00:04:04.035 --> 00:04:05.662
and then he also gets to see
00:04:05.787 --> 00:04:07.330
- how I break things down
- very specifically.
00:04:07.455 --> 00:04:11.251
- And how I take the time
- to not speed through words,
00:04:11.376 --> 00:04:14.379
- but I also enunciate and
- pronounce them quite clearly.
00:04:17.549 --> 00:04:19.050
Sikh means learner,
00:04:19.175 --> 00:04:21.136
and so I would always consider
00:04:21.261 --> 00:04:23.388
- that I'm learning more
- every day.
00:04:23.513 --> 00:04:27.100
- But the way I go out
- interpreting my life,
00:04:27.225 --> 00:04:30.603
- he also has the same
- flexibility
00:04:30.729 --> 00:04:32.731
- and the same way
- to approach life
00:04:32.856 --> 00:04:34.733
- and it's not about doing
- things a certain way.
00:04:34.858 --> 00:04:37.110
- It's not about following
- certain rituals or,
00:04:37.235 --> 00:04:40.989
- it's more of a holistic
- approach to life and,
00:04:41.114 --> 00:04:43.199
- and how to be a Sikh
- in, in this world.
