In Colombia, Julian Molina tells us how he came to become a world BMX figure, having lost one of his legs in an accident at the age of 12. The bicycle became part of his own body. Also in an accident, Adolfo Almarza from Melipilla Chile lost both legs at age 12. The bicycle and his effort helped him become the only athlete in the world to run in the elite category in the most extreme disciplines in current mountain biking.

00:00:00.114 --> 00:00:03.146
I've always defined the bicycle
as an appendix of mine.
00:00:04.115 --> 00:00:07.458
It's another part of my body.
00:00:07.748 --> 00:00:10.176
It makes me smile.
00:00:11.241 --> 00:00:12.685
It allows me to be free.
00:00:14.184 --> 00:00:16.122
It inspires me
to dream everyday.
00:00:32.540 --> 00:00:35.012
I realized that everything
is easy in life
00:00:35.122 --> 00:00:38.053
when you resolve, get ready,
and are willing to achieve a goal.
00:00:38.349 --> 00:00:41.111
And now I'll have to prove,
00:00:41.232 --> 00:00:44.221
I'll have to work
to get to the podium.
00:00:44.310 --> 00:00:46.429
That's what I want,
and that's what I'm going to do.
00:01:27.038 --> 00:01:29.555
BAD PATHWAYS
00:01:31.579 --> 00:01:37.061
SPORTS WITHOUT LIMITS
00:01:43.718 --> 00:01:47.818
I see that the limits are
where people project them.
00:01:49.147 --> 00:01:51.553
The moment you say:
'I'm not able',
00:01:52.008 --> 00:01:54.323
that's when you start
falling apart.
00:01:54.468 --> 00:01:55.758
Slowly.
00:02:12.996 --> 00:02:16.040
On January 27, 2006.
00:02:16.862 --> 00:02:18.789
That's the date.
I remember.
00:02:21.301 --> 00:02:23.000
I got out of school
00:02:23.396 --> 00:02:25.812
and, as every day,
00:02:26.408 --> 00:02:28.195
we went down,
with a group of kids,
00:02:28.415 --> 00:02:30.186
through many hillsides nearby.
00:02:30.327 --> 00:02:32.818
Here in Andes
that's all we've got.
00:02:33.784 --> 00:02:36.907
On skate boards,
plastic barrels that slided,
00:02:37.138 --> 00:02:39.636
sometimes, even a bed board,
with some soap on the bottom,
00:02:39.727 --> 00:02:41.317
and we rode it.
00:02:42.044 --> 00:02:43.604
That was how we had fun.
00:02:43.844 --> 00:02:46.899
I had a pair of in-line skates,
00:02:47.627 --> 00:02:49.722
with which I sat down
and rolled downhill.
00:02:49.836 --> 00:02:51.909
And I was the fastest.
I beat everyone.
00:02:52.821 --> 00:02:54.985
I went downhill,
and I took the curves,
00:02:55.084 --> 00:02:57.975
and I got to
Mateo Hillside.
00:02:58.202 --> 00:03:00.846
It's notorious because
there always are accidents there.
00:03:01.487 --> 00:03:03.201
It's very long,
00:03:03.361 --> 00:03:05.457
and very steep.
00:03:06.877 --> 00:03:09.448
I had ran away
from my mom.
00:03:10.612 --> 00:03:12.367
Because she didn't
want me to ride.
00:03:12.627 --> 00:03:15.858
I ran away from home,
she was very sick,
00:03:16.742 --> 00:03:19.673
and I wanted to go out
and have fun, as every kid.
00:03:20.312 --> 00:03:22.664
And there I was, skating downhill
at full speed,
00:03:22.744 --> 00:03:26.475
and they tell me:
'Stop! There comes a chiva!'
00:03:26.595 --> 00:03:29.134
We call them like that
they're trucks that work as buses.
00:03:29.615 --> 00:03:32.353
So, I'm going downhill,
00:03:34.207 --> 00:03:35.547
and I didn't see anything.
00:03:35.631 --> 00:03:39.357
I just opened my eyes
and there was
00:03:39.951 --> 00:03:42.900
the axis of the bus spinning,
00:03:43.864 --> 00:03:45.473
and I was like:
'What happened?'
00:03:46.768 --> 00:03:48.178
Then,
00:03:48.319 --> 00:03:53.539
they took my from, literally,
under the bus,
00:03:54.272 --> 00:03:56.908
and they pick me up,
and they tell me:
00:03:57.489 --> 00:03:59.313
'Kid, don't look at your foot.'
00:04:00.237 --> 00:04:02.652
'- Don't look at your foot.
- Why, what happened?'
00:04:03.353 --> 00:04:06.487
That was the first thing I did.
I looked at my foot, and it was destroyed.
00:04:40.103 --> 00:04:41.741
Mi nombre es Julián Molina,
00:04:41.826 --> 00:04:45.117
I practice BMX,
I'm 19 years old.
00:04:45.418 --> 00:04:47.533
I've been in BMX for 6 years.
00:04:47.853 --> 00:04:49.945
I love competitive racing,
00:04:50.735 --> 00:04:52.666
and I'm from Andes.
00:05:34.851 --> 00:05:37.832
The moment I realized
that I had lost both legs,
00:05:38.116 --> 00:05:39.627
my world fell apart.
00:05:39.792 --> 00:05:43.539
Imagine, in just an instant
your life completely changes.
00:05:44.210 --> 00:05:47.026
When I was at the hospital,
I noticed
00:05:47.237 --> 00:05:49.456
that I had these machines connected
to my body,
00:05:49.521 --> 00:05:51.895
that I wanted to go to the toilet
and I couldn't do it by myself.
00:05:52.440 --> 00:05:53.613
My world fell apart.
00:05:53.614 --> 00:05:55.666
The only thing I wanted back then
00:05:55.779 --> 00:05:57.353
was to keep on sleeping
and never wake up.
00:05:57.443 --> 00:05:59.379
I wished to die,
being only 12 years old.
00:06:12.397 --> 00:06:14.049
The handicaps are huge.
00:06:15.474 --> 00:06:18.655
If we measure them
as they are, they are huge.
00:06:19.125 --> 00:06:21.102
But nowadays,
00:06:21.817 --> 00:06:24.435
those handicaps
made me work
00:06:24.545 --> 00:06:28.137
much more than
a physically normal person.
00:06:34.389 --> 00:06:36.709
And I've been improving
and improving,
00:06:36.829 --> 00:06:38.000
to the point that I've
been able to achieve
00:06:38.049 --> 00:06:40.628
feats that not even a
physically normal person can.
00:06:41.565 --> 00:06:42.939
Especially on the bike,
00:06:42.999 --> 00:06:45.678
where the part of your body
you use the most are your legs.
00:07:21.150 --> 00:07:23.324
The difficulty of
00:07:23.499 --> 00:07:25.628
not having your legs
is very high.
00:07:25.757 --> 00:07:29.703
Since when I was 12
and had the accident,
00:07:30.607 --> 00:07:33.618
only in 2017 I was able
to run again.
00:07:33.716 --> 00:07:35.580
Using some special prothesis
to run.
00:07:36.313 --> 00:07:39.796
At first I thought it was impossible.
But then I was doing it, and I realized
00:07:40.693 --> 00:07:43.952
that you must have your own achievements
and improve yourself day after day.
00:07:52.701 --> 00:07:55.141
My name is Adolfo Almarza.
I'm 30 years old.
00:07:55.268 --> 00:07:57.748
I'm a professional biker,
and lecturer.
00:07:58.274 --> 00:08:00.036
I am Chilean,
and I live here in Melipilla.
00:08:33.709 --> 00:08:36.499
The first years
were very hard for us,
00:08:36.610 --> 00:08:38.562
I won't deny it.
00:08:38.896 --> 00:08:40.583
That was back in 2006.
00:08:41.393 --> 00:08:44.171
January 27.
00:08:46.949 --> 00:08:49.134
I recall it as if it had
happened yesterday.
00:08:49.800 --> 00:08:51.834
We arrived there
00:08:52.055 --> 00:08:53.484
to the clinic,
00:08:54.021 --> 00:08:56.665
It was late, like 6, or 6:30 pm.
00:08:56.749 --> 00:09:00.098
And they told me that there was
no way of healing his foot.
00:09:00.899 --> 00:09:04.400
That the gangrene was about to send him
6 feet under, as we say.
00:09:04.585 --> 00:09:06.341
And I had to choose between
letting him die,
00:09:06.511 --> 00:09:08.232
or amputating his foot.
00:09:08.477 --> 00:09:09.963
And I told them
to cut his foot.
00:09:14.619 --> 00:09:17.100
I lost my leg and it reincarnated
on a bike.
00:09:21.505 --> 00:09:23.755
All of this is about
00:09:23.975 --> 00:09:27.569
taking things to the limit.
It's always in here.
00:09:28.155 --> 00:09:29.158
It's always been.
00:09:29.291 --> 00:09:32.432
If you think it, do it,
and that's it.
00:09:32.947 --> 00:09:35.047
You must just do it and
00:09:35.258 --> 00:09:38.140
let your thoughts fly,
and let your mind
00:09:38.971 --> 00:09:41.550
scheme.
Everyday.
00:09:42.682 --> 00:09:45.179
You must do it everyday.
00:09:45.950 --> 00:09:48.212
In this small universe
00:09:49.473 --> 00:09:52.425
we are a very diminute thing
00:09:52.832 --> 00:09:55.715
that can change thousand
of ways of thinking.
00:09:56.427 --> 00:10:00.449
I've realized that.
That I'm changing the world
00:10:00.904 --> 00:10:04.425
with this little thing I do.
00:10:04.996 --> 00:10:07.949
I find it's small now,
00:10:08.248 --> 00:10:10.438
but it will grow bigger
as time goes by.
00:10:10.669 --> 00:10:12.822
There's going to be a legacy.
Who was Julián?
00:10:12.971 --> 00:10:14.547
A person like this.
00:10:18.641 --> 00:10:20.126
I'm very young, it's true.
00:10:20.272 --> 00:10:22.029
I'm just 19,
I've accomplished a lot,
00:10:22.088 --> 00:10:24.880
for being so young.
I've achieved great things.
00:10:27.994 --> 00:10:29.900
Begining with the trip
to the USA.
00:10:29.965 --> 00:10:33.198
I never thought I was going
to visit the USA.
00:10:34.334 --> 00:10:37.093
But I did imagine that someday
I was going to travel.
00:10:37.534 --> 00:10:41.147
I didn't know where, but I wanted to travel.
I wanted to get out of here.
00:10:42.617 --> 00:10:45.717
And suddenly, I was travelling
to the States.
00:10:46.211 --> 00:10:48.233
I didn't know what was happening.
I was very impressed.
00:10:50.284 --> 00:10:53.564
I've thought and acted
through my life.
00:10:54.740 --> 00:10:56.130
There are great things
just ahead.
00:10:56.281 --> 00:11:00.191
IN JULY, 2017, JULIÁN DEBUTS AT
THE JACKPOT DIRTJUMP 17, IN QUITO, ECUADOR.
00:11:00.192 --> 00:11:04.646
THAT SAME YEAR HE REACHES THE THIRD PLACE
AT SOSH URBAN MOTION, IN PARIS, FRANCE,
00:11:04.647 --> 00:11:07.308
GAINING A PLACE IN THE
WORLDWIDE BMX SCENE.
00:11:56.195 --> 00:12:00.177
The will, or hunger to achieve the goals
I've set for myself
00:12:01.073 --> 00:12:03.791
have led me to overcome
many things.
00:12:19.747 --> 00:12:24.623
I don't know how I brought myself to do it.
I think that the will to learn to walk again
00:12:24.905 --> 00:12:26.984
and to be the same person
as before, made it.
00:12:32.269 --> 00:12:35.374
I'm very grateful for that.
And I think that's the reason
00:12:35.827 --> 00:12:38.704
why nowadays I've been able
to achieve things
00:12:38.799 --> 00:12:40.727
that I thought that
were unreacheable.
00:12:41.312 --> 00:12:43.156
I never thought I'll get this far.
00:12:44.197 --> 00:12:48.217
I've been the only one in South America,
well, in the world, to make big jumps,
00:12:48.413 --> 00:12:50.169
the biggest in the world.
00:12:50.367 --> 00:12:52.871
I've had the opportunity of riding
the Urban Downhills,
00:12:52.971 --> 00:12:56.441
being the only one missing both legs
on the circuit.
00:12:57.326 --> 00:13:00.310
I've got the opportunity to ride
the most dangerous circuits in the world
00:13:00.372 --> 00:13:02.141
and finish them
without any problem.
00:13:04.228 --> 00:13:08.035
And, well, I proved that nothing
is impossible when you have the will.
00:13:09.504 --> 00:13:14.127
I my life I've realized that
if I there's no pain, there's no reward.
00:13:17.827 --> 00:13:21.085
We rode a race, one of the most brutal races
organized worldwide,
00:13:21.574 --> 00:13:23.772
It's to ride through more
than 500 km.
00:13:24.026 --> 00:13:25.910
It's a really brutal race.
00:13:26.030 --> 00:13:28.750
Because it's an ultra marathon,
very, very long.
00:13:29.400 --> 00:13:31.493
And they're brutal
in the sense
00:13:31.642 --> 00:13:34.750
that you're always giving your 100
