White Guitar

View on the Pragda STREAM site

White Guitar, directed by Aldo Garay, is a reflective documentary that intertwines the story of an unfinished film about the legendary Uruguayan singer-songwriter Alfredo Zitarrosa with the personal and creative journey of its director, Francisco "Papico" Cibils.

A poet who lived in exile, Cibils walked around with a VHS camera on his shoulder, challenging the dull recording of domestic life for which these cameras were created. A product of its time and the intuitive impulse of its director, the recording is, among other things, a link in the collective construction of Uruguayan memory from the perspective of popular culture.

Through archival footage, interviews, and recovered materials, Garay reconstructs both the elusive portrait of Zitarrosa—an emblematic figure in Latin American popular music and a symbol of cultural resistance—and the challenges faced by Cibils in his attempt to capture Zitarrosa’s legacy on film.
