Peruvian director Manuel Bauer offers a fascinating journey aboard a freight train across Peru, an incredible descent from the Altiplano lead mines, at 4,800 meters altitude, to the Pacific shore.
Set amidst gorgeous landscapes, this understated portrait alternates between a road movie peppered with local flair and the social underpinnings of a country victim to Neo-colonialism.
As the train exits its stations, the film uncovers the country’s disillusioned inhabitants. We find a century-old bar that refuses to disappear, a nurse trying to help children with too much lead in their blood to pass through a metal detector, and a city that devours itself with the memories of the people who live in it.
The documentary exposes the paradox of a country rich in resources but poor in human services. While the country celebrates Independence Day with populist speeches and street parades, its population wavers between skepticism and resignation as its resources disappear aboard foreign cargo ships.
“Manuel Bauer’s documentary debut weaves a vivid tapestry of experiences that captures the complex sociopolitical fabric of contemporary Peru." - Phuong Le, The Guardian
This vivid documentary follows a train from the Andes to Port of Callao on the Pacific coast, capturing [Peru's] rich life and toxic industrial legacies along the way." - Phuong Le, The Guardian
“The ‘railroad movie’ that shows the beauty and disenchantment of today’s Peru.” – Héctor L. Martinez, El País

Two cars.
2
00:03:00,096 --> 00:03:01,723
One car.
3
00:03:04,559 --> 00:03:05,435
Bogie
4
00:03:06,561 --> 00:03:07,437
Half bogie
5
00:03:08,354 --> 00:03:09,230
One wheel

Coupler
7
00:03:10,982 --> 00:03:13,359
Hit it, hit it, hard.
8
00:03:48,269 --> 00:03:52,190
The year 1963 my father retired
9
00:03:52,357 --> 00:03:56,819
and he took the family to Huancayo, in order to buy a house and move there.
10
00:03:56,819 --> 00:04:01,866
At that time Huancayo wasn't as big as now,
11
00:04:01,866 --> 00:04:05,161
my father took all his retirement savings with him.
12
00:04:07,372 --> 00:04:10,917
We arrived to Huancayo on a saturday, and went to a hotel,
13
00:04:10,917 --> 00:04:14,837
and my father saw that La Pastorita Huaracina
had a show in Huancayo that weekend.
14
00:04:14,837 --> 00:04:17,507
My father had a crush with La Pastorita Huaracina.
15
00:04:17,840 --> 00:04:20,176
It was his opportunity to listen her live.
16
00:04:20,176 --> 00:04:24,222
So we went to the show in the coliseum, at Avenida Real.
17
00:04:24,222 --> 00:04:26,516
We got in the coliseum,
18
00:04:26,516 --> 00:04:30,353
and there were selling a sweet biscuit that my father liked a lot.
19
00:04:30,353 --> 00:04:34,107
The vendor got close to us, so my father wanted to buy some of it.
20
00:04:38,361 --> 00:04:40,530
When he reached for his wallet he didn't find it,
21
00:04:40,530 --> 00:04:43,366
he started to search for it, and he said "My money!"
22
00:04:43,366 --> 00:04:44,742
He got stolen.
23
00:04:44,742 --> 00:04:48,705
My father got desperate about losing all his savings,
24
00:04:48,705 --> 00:04:50,081
so we came back to Cerro de Pasco.
25
00:04:50,081 --> 00:04:54,293
I was six years old, and my sisters seven and three.
26
00:05:00,341 --> 00:05:06,097
Who should be that fellow in Huancayo that now
has a house, a car, everything, with our money.
27
00:05:06,097 --> 00:05:08,224
I could have lived in Huancayo 50 years ago.
28
00:05:20,778 --> 00:05:22,905
-When is your wife coming to the city?
29
00:05:23,031 --> 00:05:25,283
-She comes to town every 15 days or so
30
00:05:25,408 --> 00:05:28,369
-She spends a week here, and she goes back. So...
31
00:05:28,369 --> 00:05:33,708
-On Tuesday I ask you again, and you let me know
-She stays 15 days here, and 15 in Huancayo
32
00:05:34,667 --> 00:05:39,047
-Alright then, I will call you, thank you very much for everything
-Ok, ok, ok
33
00:05:40,798 --> 00:05:45,219
-Send my regards to your family
-Ok, I let them know
34
00:05:53,436 --> 00:05:56,856
-He asks that we have to open the call
35
00:05:56,981 --> 00:06:01,360
-That was already made, we sent it also
36
00:06:01,569 --> 00:06:04,405
-For the distribution
37
00:06:04,405 --> 00:06:07,533
-See how much we need, and ask for support too
38
00:06:07,533 --> 00:06:10,536
-Yes, if not Jose will be overwhelmed
39
00:06:35,728 --> 00:06:39,440
Cerro is very nice, but the problem it's the altitude
40
00:06:40,358 --> 00:06:45,863
After 60 years old, people has to leave because the blood becomes thicker
41
00:06:47,907 --> 00:06:51,160
If not, you got purple, your hands purple.
42
00:06:51,369 --> 00:06:55,415
you can't digest food well, or sleep. All the problems start.
43
00:06:57,083 --> 00:07:01,921
There is also some people who decided to stay,
but they died for not moving away
44
00:07:03,423 --> 00:07:11,097
doesn't matter if you don't want to migrate,
if you want to stay alive, you got to move down
45
00:11:29,980 --> 00:11:34,193
Here it's hard to find a true cerreño, are very few left
46
00:11:34,193 --> 00:11:39,323
As you see, streets and houses are abandoned, people
come here to live temporary.
47
00:11:40,366 --> 00:11:45,371
All my close friends are gone, they moved away.
48
00:11:45,955 --> 00:11:48,416
I used to hang out at bars, with many friends
49
00:11:48,416 --> 00:11:50,334
I had pals
50
00:11:50,710 --> 00:11:53,337
Now I'm a stranger in my hometown.
51
00:11:55,381 --> 00:11:57,383
Your family has to leave.
52
00:11:57,591 --> 00:11:59,593
Your friends have to leave.
53
00:11:59,635 --> 00:12:01,470
Everyone has to leave.
54
00:12:30,791 --> 00:12:32,793
Pasco doesn't seem to exist for the rest of Peru,
55
00:12:32,793 --> 00:12:35,880
They always say, Pasco? , mining city.
56
00:12:36,172 --> 00:12:37,923
But what about us who live here?
57
00:12:38,132 --> 00:12:41,594
If you go to Huancayo and sign your "huayno" ,they make fun of you,
bah, cerreños they say,
58
00:12:41,594 --> 00:12:44,722
"Your huaynos and music are sad."
59
00:12:44,722 --> 00:12:46,390
How it can't be sad?
60
00:12:46,474 --> 00:12:51,562
The places where you were born, grew up, played are gone, destroyed.
61
00:12:52,188 --> 00:12:57,818
You visit other cities and you find at least a small park,
here you don't find any.
62
00:12:57,818 --> 00:13:02,406
Therefore what musicians, poets, artists create comes out sad.
63
00:13:14,251 --> 00:13:19,673
I want to stay here the rest of my life, but it's tough.
64
00:13:20,299 --> 00:13:22,259
Unfortunately it is a mining zone,
65
00:13:22,551 --> 00:13:25,221
so you have to accept how things are.
66
00:13:25,221 --> 00:13:28,307
In five years I have to find a way to move out.
67
00:13:31,685 --> 00:13:37,566
Locomotovive 1005, south of Cerro de Pasco,
going from Cerro de Pasco to km 116 point on the main track.
68
00:13:37,942 --> 00:13:38,984
Approved.
69
00:13:39,360 --> 00:13:43,697
Until PK 116, locomotive 1005, over and out.
70
00:14:28,617 --> 00:14:41,505
Free line, keep going, keep going.
71
00:18:23,143 --> 00:18:31,068
Keep going, keep going, move it.
72
00:20:04,411 --> 00:20:07,414
Oroya base, locomotive 1005, over.
73
00:20:13,170 --> 00:20:15,130
Oroya base, 1005.
74
00:20:18,008 --> 00:20:19,968
There is no signal.
75
00:23:09,262 --> 00:23:11,223
Slow, slow.
76
00:23:12,307 --> 00:23:14,267
I see you.
77
00:23:25,028 --> 00:23:26,655
Try to get in, get in.
78
00:23:36,748 --> 00:23:37,916
Get in, get in.
79
00:23:40,168 --> 00:23:42,421
Holly Molly, there's a huge jam.
80
00:23:44,714 --> 00:23:45,882
Bang them , papi!
81
00:24:01,940 --> 00:24:03,108
Keep goin, keep goin.
82
00:24:03,400 --> 00:24:03,984
Half loco.
83
00:24:04,693 --> 00:24:05,569
Bogie
84
00:24:05,569 --> 00:24:06,278
Half bogie
85
00:24:06,278 --> 00:24:06,945
Wheel
86
00:24:06,945 --> 00:24:07,779
We are in
87
00:24:11,116 --> 00:24:11,950
In
88
00:24:32,345 --> 00:24:42,022
When I was a child, around 10-11 am, you couldn't see La Oroya Antigua.
89
00:24:42,439 --> 00:24:47,861
Pollution was quite heavier.
90
00:24:50,071 --> 00:24:53,366
At 5pm, the siren started.
91
00:24:53,366 --> 00:24:59,539
That meant the refinery was releasing greenish fumes.
92
00:24:59,539 --> 00:25:02,792
With a foul smell.
93
00:25:02,792 --> 00:25:07,339
But despite that we kept doing our lives there,
even if our eyes burned.
94
00:25:07,339 --> 00:25:12,260
We walked around, tearing up.
95
00:26:06,940 --> 00:26:09,526
Long live to Perú!
Long live!
96
00:26:17,409 --> 00:26:25,667
Now we're going to sing Oroya's anthem.
97
00:26:25,667 --> 00:26:33,967
I'm beg all of you, students, young ladies,
keep the pertinent posture and respect.
98
00:26:33,967 --> 00:26:39,639
Stop chatting!
99
00:26:54,112 --> 00:27:01,536
-Things were different if industrial mine companies respected more
our environment and nature by not polluting them.
100
00:27:01,536 --> 00:27:07,792
-For example La Oroya it´s being polluted since several decades ago
101
00:27:07,792 --> 00:27:20,096
-If we were more aware we can recover our nature,
and have in the future a healthier environment.
102
00:27:39,616 --> 00:27:43,536
HEALTH CENTER LA OROYA
103
00:27:52,712 --> 00:27:57,550
-28 June 2016
104
00:27:57,550 --> 00:28:02,931
-During this period there was no tracking...
105
00:28:02,931 --> 00:28:10,146
Always have been said that there were children with lead, but not like now.
106
00:28:12,065 --> 00:28:19,239
They came from Missouri's University to do some
research and started testing children at schools
107
00:28:19,239 --> 00:28:24,577
That was in 1998.
108
00:28:24,577 --> 00:28:29,499
And it showed that children and pregnant women
have high levels of lead in blood.
109
00:28:29,499 --> 00:28:37,841
From that agreement we started to orient families about lead prevention.
110
00:28:44,305 --> 00:28:48,351
-You want the doctor to check you out?
111
00:28:48,351 --> 00:28:50,854
-Ah, yes I want to see him.
112
00:28:50,854 --> 00:28:53,773
-You have to come back in the afternoon, he's not available right now.
113
00:28:53,773 --> 00:28:55,150
-Not available?
114
00:28:55,150 --> 00:28:58,778
-He's quite busy, come back at 1pm.
115
00:28:58,778 --> 00:28:59,696
-At 1 pm?
116
00:28:59,696 --> 00:29:02,365
-Yes, at 1 pm come right here...
117
00:29:02,532 --> 00:29:08,413
There's no treatment if the child does´t move away from the source of pollution.
118
00:29:08,413 --> 00:29:17,338
People here believe that the lead treatment it's that I will
cure them with a pill, but it's not true.
119
00:29:17,338 --> 00:29:22,427
Lead treatment has many factors to check, one of them
is diet and nutrition.
120
00:29:22,427 --> 00:29:32,312
And most children here have anemia, that's the main
reason why they have some level of lead in their blood.
121
00:29:35,773 --> 00:29:38,777
Lead contamination has become a social issue
122
00:29:38,943 --> 00:29:43,948
If you tell a mother that her kid has to move away from the
source of pollution, they think you're against the Company.
123
00:30:00,965 --> 00:30:08,890
At the beginning my father told me, dear, you're going against the Company,
and also against husband's economical source.
124
00:30:08,890 --> 00:30:12,060
Because my husband works for the Company.
125
00:30:28,159 --> 00:30:33,373
Long live to Perú, with Éxito
126
00:30:39,379 --> 00:30:45,051
-Which is the name of the radio that all Manuel Scorza's
neighbors listen every day.
127
00:30:46,052 --> 00:30:47,470
-Radio Éxito.
128
00:30:47,470 --> 00:30:50,890
-The power of what is ours. Of course.
129
00:30:50,890 --> 00:30:54,352
-Thank you Viviana. Of course, we keep receiving your phone calls.
130
00:30:54,352 --> 00:30:57,814
-Half an hour of this giants, stars clash.
131
00:30:57,814 --> 00:31:01,317
-Of course we keep receiving your phone calls.
132
00:31:01,609 --> 00:31:05,655
-Aha, we have another phone call.
133
00:31:05,655 --> 00:31:07,282
-Alo! Good Afternoon! Tell us your name.
134
00:31:07,282 --> 00:31:08,533
-Francesca
135
00:31:08,533 --> 00:31:10,243
-Francesquita.
136
00:31:10,243 --> 00:31:17,000
-Tell us who you will give your point, to
Corazón Serrano or Papilón El Rico Bacilón.
137
00:31:17,000 --> 00:31:19,127
-Corazón Serrano.
138
00:31:19,127 --> 00:31:21,254
-Point to Corazón Serrano, Hurray!
139
00:31:31,890 --> 00:31:37,770
For the 195 anniversary of Perú's Independence.
140
00:31:37,770 --> 00:31:47,822
Santa Rosa de Sacco City Hall invites all to
participate in the school parade.
141
00:31:47,822 --> 00:31:50,199
All the public and private educational institutions, elementary
and secondary level.
142
00:31:50,700 --> 00:31:56,789
Let's renew these 28th our commitment to make our
country a greater nation.
143
00:31:56,789 --> 00:32:03,755
Love what it's ours and celebrate with patriotism these holidays.
United our city and our country will become better.
144
00:32:03,755 --> 00:32:08,843
United we will make Oroya stronger.
Happy National Holidays!
145
00:32:10,595 --> 00:32:19,562
Never stop feeling proud about the place you were born.
You're peruvian, and your country will be always were you grew up.
146
00:32:19,562 --> 00:32:25,902
And also gives you all the chances to enjoy its people
and natural resources.
147
00:32:25,902 --> 00:32:31,699
Resources that are unique in the world.
Long live to Perú now and ever!
148
00:32:31,699 --> 00:32:34,952
Happy Holidays with Radio Exito.
149
00:32:34,952 --> 00:32:43,878
I'm cholo, but don´t pity me...
150
00:33:22,750 --> 00:33:26,504
14:00 hours, traffic controller, LCG, over.
151
00:33:30,758 --> 00:33:37,432
With current AB 1791 to travel from Unich to Junin,
Is this conform Amador, Is this conform.
152
00:33:43,980 --> 00:33:46,733
Allocate on track 4.
153
00:33:50,236 --> 00:33:52,989
Autorithy number 4, Oroya base here.
154
00:34:18,389 --> 00:34:28,941
Ladies and gentleman, the private elementary school
Cesar Vallejo from La Oroya.
155
00:34:28,941 --> 00:34:39,827
Give a big ovation, and the recognition of our authorities,
to the standard bearer carrying high our national symbol.
156
00:34:39,911 --> 00:34:46,375
Our red and withe, our peruvian flag, honour and glory.
157
00:34:46,375 --> 00:34:57,804
Remembering the ones who made possible our independence ,
remembering the words of our liberator Don José de San Martin.
158
00:34:57,804 --> 00:35:03,142
Since this very moment Perú it's free and independent.
159
00:35:03,142 --> 00:35:08,231
By the general will of our people, and justice
and it's cause that God defends.
160
00:35:10,191 --> 00:35:18,366
Since last year children's lead levels on blood have decreased.
161
00:35:18,366 --> 00:35:23,579
We don't have to insist anymore about blood tests, the mothers come by themselves.
162
00:35:23,579 --> 00:35:27,834
I feel that population are becoming aware and leaving behind their fears.
163
00:35:45,017 --> 00:35:48,938
La Cabaña-Oroya-Manchester
164
00:36:32,982 --> 00:36:37,195
DOE RUN PERÚ, Announcement:
165
00:36:37,195 --> 00:36:42,199
Dear Doe Run employees today we want to inform you
166
00:36:42,199 --> 00:36:45,202
that Doe Run's creditor's meeting has been held
167
00:36:45,202 --> 00:36:57,340
At this meeting the official receiver inform about
benefits of the extraordinary retirement program.
168
00:36:57,340 --> 00:37:09,352
Despite the counter campaign and the false news made to
stop the program, 440 former workers accepted it voluntarily.
169
00:37:09,352 --> 00:37:15,233
Whom already cash their incentives and are enjoying the
benefits of owning a home or the clearance of debts.
170
00:37:42,176 --> 00:37:51,936
In these national holidays show your love to Perú
by working hard to make of it a great country.
171
00:37:51,936 --> 00:37:55,648
Happy 28 of July, with Radio Exito.
172
00:38:09,370 --> 00:38:13,708
Huancayo!
173
00:38:23,175 --> 00:38:33,728
That's why when a train departed from Cerro de Pasco with 50 tons,
arrived to Desamparados, in Lima, with 1 ton less.
174
00:38:34,020 --> 00:38:37,773
Because the mineral extract flew away.
175
00:38:37,773 --> 00:38:50,536
And the Rail Company have to pay for it, nowadays they cover the wagons.
176
00:38:54,206 --> 00:39:01,630
Families should stick together, always. But I wanted my children
to become professionals.
177
00:39:01,714 --> 00:39:14,727
Unfortunately here at La Oroya were not institutions where
they could study the careers they wanted to pursue.
178
00:39:14,935 --> 00:39:19,690
3 of my kids leave away, my twin daughters, and my son.
179
00:39:19,732 --> 00:39:21,609
They are in Lima.
180
00:39:21,942 --> 00:39:26,030
Now just my two youngest child live with me.
181
00:39:26,072 --> 00:39:29,867
Yes, right there my dear. Inside the circle, don´t write outside the circle.
182
00:39:30,326 --> 00:39:33,621
Very good, 1 and 8.
183
00:39:33,829 --> 00:39:37,875
If I take one more from 18, How much it's left?
184
00:39:50,346 --> 00:39:51,597
17.
185
00:39:51,597 --> 00:39:53,641
17, now we have 17.
186
00:39:54,558 --> 00:39:58,687
We keep taking out another one to 17
187
00:40:10,783 --> 00:40:15,955
My parents have become quite older, and they need us to take care of them.
188
00:40:15,955 --> 00:40:20,835
That's one strong reason why I'm still here at La Oroya, my parents.
189
00:40:20,835 --> 00:40:28,384
They are still alive, and I have to joyfully enjoy them until their last breath.
190
00:40:39,770 --> 00:40:47,319
As a professional I'm contributing with my hometown,
were I grew up and become the person I am now.
191
00:40:47,736 --> 00:40:52,908
So leaving this town it's going to be quite sad for me.
192
00:44:01,972 --> 00:44:08,520
Oroya base, Oroya base. Loco 1017 arriving to Galera's station. Over
193
00:44:08,520 --> 00:44:15,110
Attention loco, go to the middle section
194
00:44:18,113 --> 00:44:23,160
Ok. Entering through middle section. Any other instructions?
195
00:44:23,994 --> 00:44:27,122
Pick the empty wagons and go back to base
196
00:44:27,122 --> 00:44:31,126
Ok. I see the wagons. Over
197
00:47:10,494 --> 00:47:11,495
Oroya base
198
00:47:11,495 --> 00:47:12,996
Good afternoon, Chalco, what's up?
199
00:47:13,872 --> 00:47:15,374
Chalco, ummmm
200
00:47:15,999 --> 00:47:17,918
Can you make a temporary notice?
201
00:47:18,252 --> 00:47:21,421
My tablet's battery run out , I can't send the reports
202
00:47:22,297 --> 00:47:23,257
Run out?
203
00:47:23,632 --> 00:47:25,175
If it was new
204
00:47:25,884 --> 00:47:26,760
From my tablet
205
00:47:28,679 --> 00:47:29,972
So you can't send the reports
206
00:47:30,013 --> 00:47:30,556
Yes
207
00:47:32,558 --> 00:47:34,226
So I don't have loco...
208
00:47:35,018 --> 00:47:35,686
Alo, alo
209
00:47:37,604 --> 00:47:38,188
Alo
210
00:47:40,065 --> 00:47:41,400
They hung up on you
211
00:47:58,500 --> 00:48:01,670
This is a message from Claro, if you wish...
212
00:48:13,015 --> 00:48:15,017
395...20
213
00:48:22,691 --> 00:48:26,570
This is a message from Claro, if you wi...
214
00:48:29,323 --> 00:48:30,240
This is a joke
215
00:48:30,282 --> 00:48:31,909
Nobody wants to answer you
216
00:48:32,075 --> 00:48:34,328
Signal is coming back
217
00:48:39,207 --> 00:48:41,335
He will call again
218
00:49:08,028 --> 00:49:10,030
20-24
219
00:49:13,742 --> 00:49:20,999
0-139-82
220
00:49:29,049 --> 00:49:31,468
I'm going to check the puppies
221
00:49:31,468 --> 00:49:35,722
they are searching something and barking too loud
222
00:49:42,270 --> 00:49:43,563
15-15
223
00:49:47,818 --> 00:49:51,863
Get comfortable, get comfortable, I can barely hear you
224
00:49:52,072 --> 00:49:53,740
Ok, can you hear me now?
225
00:49:53,824 --> 00:49:58,620
Ok, at 13 hours with 10 minutes entries from north locomotive 1020
226
00:49:59,371 --> 00:50:00,122
Ok
227
00:50:00,372 --> 00:50:02,374
Engine driver, Joaquin Benavides
228
00:50:02,833 --> 00:50:03,583
Ok
229
00:50:03,834 --> 00:50:05,836
Train officer, Jonathan Espinoza
230
00:50:06,044 --> 00:50:06,795
Ok
231
00:50:06,962 --> 00:50:08,964
Brakeman, Juan Sanchez
232
00:50:08,964 --> 00:50:09,715
Ok
233
00:50:09,798 --> 00:50:13,593
Entries with 8 loaded wagons from Chinalco
234
00:50:14,177 --> 00:50:15,387
There is no intern?
235
00:50:15,637 --> 00:50:16,471
No,no,no
236
00:50:17,514 --> 00:50:20,058
Celiono isn't engine driver's intern?
237
00:50:20,267 --> 00:50:23,645
I haven't seen that dude, hasn't got off, that locomotive
doesn't stop, is always moving
238
00:50:28,483 --> 00:50:29,609
Take it
239
00:51:04,436 --> 00:51:07,856
We're going to hitch up 14 dennis and 3 donkeys
240
00:51:08,231 --> 00:51:10,150
One goes to Chaupac
241
00:51:10,233 --> 00:51:13,862
Now listen what the engineer told us
242
00:51:15,322 --> 00:51:16,865
So, with the 1030...
243
00:51:27,918 --> 00:51:31,296
Hey watchman!
244
00:51:31,296 --> 00:51:33,840
Watchman come here!
245
01:03:27,011 --> 01:03:31,349
A train driver who works here in Perú can do it everywhere in the world.
246
01:03:33,476 --> 01:03:38,314
And we've had experience with train drivers who have come from abroad.
247
01:03:38,439 --> 01:03:42,485
When they have come down from Galera, they have
come down quite fearful,
248
01:03:42,777 --> 01:03:47,782
and after they have lived the experience firsthand, they
have told it when they arrived in Chosica.
249
01:03:47,782 --> 01:03:51,452
The first thing you notice it's the terror in their eyes
250
01:03:51,452 --> 01:03:55,331
the terror of knowing that a train with 1100 gross tons is coming down,
251
01:03:55,331 --> 01:04:00,002
and that it depends a lot on their brakes and their ability
to reach their destination.
252
01:04:06,676 --> 01:04:10,972
We work on the railway 365 days a year, we never stop.
253
01:04:10,972 --> 01:04:15,268
We work 24/7 and our frequency of trains has increased
254
01:04:18,938 --> 01:04:23,901
We have increased the cargoes a lot,
255
01:04:23,901 --> 01:04:28,864
Apart from giving development to the country, and generating
taxes for the government,
256
01:04:29,115 --> 01:04:30,658
I believe this company is growing.
257
01:04:36,122 --> 01:04:43,963
-There are coming downhill an average of 18, 32, 44 wagons...
- Tell me , do you have a big loco at the patio? There's none right?
258
01:04:50,678 --> 01:04:55,057
- Do you have a big locomotive at Callao or I bring one down?
259
01:04:55,057 --> 01:05:00,521
-Ok right, 17.37
260
01:05:00,521 --> 01:05:03,816
-What else you need, since I can send you just the loco...
261
01:05:55,910 --> 01:05:59,830
-But it’s missing locomotive’s number and the hour, 8:30
262
01:05:59,914 --> 01:06:05,920
-write the number, I believe were both 1012, 1018 and 1021
263
01:06:12,009 --> 01:06:15,763
-Who is in the locomotive?
264
01:06:15,763 --> 01:06:18,724
-Goyo
Ah Goyito
265
01:06:18,724 --> 01:06:22,353
-The cutlery is in the bag?
Yes, it's all in
266
01:06:23,813 --> 01:06:25,815
Julio's main course is missing!
267
01:06:27,858 --> 01:06:29,485
He should have stay
268
01:06:36,742 --> 01:06:40,579
-But you can't look at it
269
01:06:42,081 --> 01:06:43,833
Scrutinize me my lord
270
01:06:43,833 --> 01:06:45,584
No, it's not your turn
271
01:06:46,419 --> 01:06:49,630
Yahve it's my shepherd, I need nothing
272
01:06:51,882 --> 01:06:54,301
In the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit
273
01:06:55,010 --> 01:07:02,226
My family did suffer a little at first from spending a lot of time in the company
274
01:07:02,309 --> 01:07:06,063
and suddenly not dedicating what they deserve as a family.
275
01:07:06,063 --> 01:07:09,191
They have understood my work and have supported me.
276
01:07:09,191 --> 01:07:13,821
I can't complain, my wife and children have supported
me a lot in the development of my work
277
01:07:13,821 --> 01:07:17,324
and thanks to them I have achieved what I have achieved up to now.
278
01:07:21,287 --> 01:07:23,998
-yesterday I had also another meeting, and I could't get home until 3pm
279
01:07:37,803 --> 01:07:42,183
I use the phone all day long. Even at night or at dawn they call me,
280
01:07:42,183 --> 01:07:49,023
It is part of my body. If I don't have it, it's like I'm really underwear-free.
281
01:07:50,649 --> 01:07:54,737
Apart from the fact that I like my iron, I like the railroad,
282
01:07:54,737 --> 01:08:00,659
I believe that the fact that I have a responsibility
and that I have been entrusted as general manager
283
01:08:00,659 --> 01:08:02,077
makes me be more involved.
284
01:08:02,077 --> 01:08:06,874
whoever enters the railroad, gets into it and likes it,
285
01:08:06,874 --> 01:08:11,670
is going to get hooked. Being on the railroad is my second home.
286
01:08:25,810 --> 01:08:32,441
In Peru, the fleet of vehicles has increased by more than
40% in the last five years,
287
01:08:32,983 --> 01:08:36,320
speaking only of private vehicles and not of cargo vehicles.
288
01:08:36,320 --> 01:08:43,661
And aside from the fact that you take a long time to get there,
you see accidents every day because the roads are so narrow.
289
01:08:43,661 --> 01:08:51,919
People who continually use the Central Highway have realized that
has already collapsed. It has long since collapsed.
290
01:09:37,089 --> 01:09:45,347
I find it a little difficult to retire at 65. I'm not used
to sitting or resting at home, so I find it a bit complicated.
291
01:09:45,347 --> 01:09:51,478
But I don't know, I suddenly changed my mind when I reached 60.
292
01:11:26,782 --> 01:11:31,328
Where will my teacher be, a certain Ortiz
293
01:11:31,912 --> 01:11:33,914
It was because of him that I started studying,
294
01:11:33,914 --> 01:11:36,792
because if it was for my mother, I would have been illiterate.
295
01:11:39,461 --> 01:11:44,341
In my village the parades of national holidays
were prepared a month in advance
296
01:11:44,508 --> 01:11:49,680
In front of my grandmother's shop there was a kind of road,
297
01:11:49,680 --> 01:11:54,310
and all the boys went there to rehearse for the parade
298
01:11:54,393 --> 01:12:02,359
One day the teacher told me: " And you, what are
you doing, why don't you study?
299
01:12:04,111 --> 01:12:12,077
I was 4 or 5 years old. I told him, no, my mom doesn't want to
300
01:12:12,244 --> 01:12:18,167
It's not that she didn't want to, it's that she couldn't.
I still didn't understand the situation
301
01:12:18,167 --> 01:12:22,755
"Yeah, I'm gonna talk to your mom, you get ready tomorrow and wait for me.
302
01:12:22,755 --> 01:12:26,550
I'm going to buy your notebooks so you can study"
303
01:12:26,884 --> 01:12:31,138
The teacher bought me the stuff and talked to my mom
304
01:12:31,305 --> 01:12:38,103
I went to school and in a calendar year I did academic years.
I knew everything, in half a year I finished first grade
305
01:12:38,270 --> 01:12:43,359
I was the first student in 10 years, both in primary and secondary school
306
01:13:06,757 --> 01:13:11,261
I was born in the district of Chacas, in the department of Ancash,
307
01:13:11,261 --> 01:13:15,766
on the slope of the Callejón de Conchucos, in the Cordillera Negra
308
01:13:16,308 --> 01:13:23,649
I came to the restaurant with the idea of working and
studying for a year or two and doing something else,
309
01:13:24,108 --> 01:13:25,901
but that was not the case
310
01:13:25,901 --> 01:13:28,779
I wanted to be a professional
311
01:13:28,779 --> 01:13:31,657
the owner told me either you work or you study
312
01:13:31,657 --> 01:13:35,786
For me at that time the option was to work because
I already had my room rented
313
01:13:35,786 --> 01:13:38,163
I lived independently and if I didn't work, how could I support myself
314
01:13:38,163 --> 01:13:43,085
And in Lima, working and studying are not very compatible
315
01:13:56,056 --> 01:13:59,643
Here la crème de la crème of Lima has passed through
316
01:13:59,643 --> 01:14:03,814
I have had companions who waited upon Nicolás de Piérola, Manuel Prado
317
01:14:03,814 --> 01:14:10,154
and, from there, the only one who has not come is Humala
318
01:14:14,158 --> 01:14:19,872
And the most friendly have been Belaunde and Alan
319
01:14:19,872 --> 01:14:25,461
Fujimori, on the other hand, moved a large number of security forces
320
01:14:26,462 --> 01:14:29,131
They almost wouldn't let the waiter who was attending move around
321
01:14:30,716 --> 01:14:35,888
Without being arrogant, for Cordano, in the center of Lima, has no competition.
322
01:14:35,929 --> 01:14:39,183
Cordano is next to the Government Palace,
323
01:14:39,266 --> 01:14:45,856
before the other reference was, in front of the Central Railway,
what is now the House of Literature
324
01:14:46,773 --> 01:14:53,113
...because people thought that if you stayed under the
soil of the church you would be closer to God
325
01:14:53,238 --> 01:14:58,452
That's why they used incense, myrrh, aromatic smells,
so as not to smell the rotten smell
326
01:14:58,493 --> 01:14:59,995
Because when we die we rot
327
01:15:00,162 --> 01:15:04,833
and the only thing you carry away are the good and bad
actions, the eaten, the lived, the travelled
328
01:15:04,875 --> 01:15:06,585
Not the gold, not the socks
329
01:15:06,585 --> 01:15:11,256
When this beautiful palace was built, in the name of that noble cause of the Jesuits,
330
01:15:11,256 --> 01:15:13,425
it was named as "Desamparados" station
331
01:15:13,425 --> 01:15:17,012
Because the word "Desamparados" means without protection
332
01:15:17,012 --> 01:15:21,600
After being a church it became a small train station......
333
01:17:03,702 --> 01:17:08,832
When I was about a year and a half on the job,
334
01:17:08,874 --> 01:17:12,669
the general manager said to me,
335
01:17:12,669 --> 01:17:16,465
"You know what, Cabeza? I can't take it anymore."
336
01:17:16,465 --> 01:17:20,260
He sent us a letter of sale of the restaurant
337
01:17:20,260 --> 01:17:23,639
We bought it on account of our social benefits.
338
01:17:33,231 --> 01:17:38,362
I wanted to study something related with math, physics, engineering
339
01:17:38,362 --> 01:17:43,658
I would have been very good at science, but it was not possible
340
01:17:44,034 --> 01:17:49,164
Perhaps I earn more than a person who has the title,
341
01:17:49,164 --> 01:17:54,294
but there's always something you'd want to have
342
01:18:29,496 --> 01:18:33,583
Feeling limeño? no, I never have felt from here
343
01:18:33,583 --> 01:18:37,129
I've always been a 100% serrano
344
01:18:37,129 --> 01:18:40,674
So much so that, I care of my huaynos, I take care of my customs
345
01:18:40,674 --> 01:18:44,803
When I have a chance, I cook dishes from my own land
346
01:19:48,825 --> 01:19:56,792
We are moving backwards in many ways that are crucial for our country
347
01:19:56,792 --> 01:20:01,129
Because a country without health, without education
is not going to get anywhere
348
01:20:01,129 --> 01:20:05,967
I'm really saddened when I think of my grandson
349
01:22:08,632 --> 01:22:09,883
Half bogie
350
01:22:11,968 --> 01:22:13,219
One wheel
351
01:22:14,304 --> 01:22:15,055
Coupler
352
01:22:15,221 --> 01:22:15,972
Stop
353
01:22:28,109 --> 01:22:31,696
I've worked over 27 years as a technician
354
01:22:31,696 --> 01:22:36,993
I worked shipping minerals, at the port
355
01:22:36,993 --> 01:22:45,210
through conveyour belt,trucks, depending on the hold the captain chose
356
01:22:45,210 --> 01:22:47,337
and also the mineral's quality
357
01:22:47,337 --> 01:22:51,549
The main manager of Minero Peru sent me to study all
that so I could became a custom technicianz
358
01:22:51,549 --> 01:22:56,596
My friend Juan de la Vega brought me there, I started in as a driver
359
01:22:56,596 --> 01:23:02,560
The chief of staff was a fan of Alianza, sent me to study at Customs
360
01:23:02,560 --> 01:23:09,067
Then I graduated as a customs technician. I became a mineral shipper
361
01:23:09,067 --> 01:23:13,029
that's why I retired from Minero Peru
362
01:23:42,892 --> 01:23:53,903
-This is the champion team of the year 63. Here we are playing with
Rodolfo Guzmán, Rubén Rivas, Coco Bazán, Diego Mendoza,
363
01:23:53,903 --> 01:24:01,578
Juan de la Vega, Grimaldo, Tenemás, Víctor Zegarra,
Perico León, me and Héctor Valle
364
01:24:02,787 --> 01:24:06,458
- Rosteing with 5 goals advances
365
01:24:07,417 --> 01:24:08,668
And you were the scorer?
366
01:24:08,668 --> 01:24:09,753
-Of course
367
01:24:10,837 --> 01:24:14,758
-Alianza defeated Cristal 2-1, Víctor Rosteing scored both goals head-on.
368
01:24:19,387 --> 01:24:21,389
-I had my head in the right place.
369
01:24:25,143 --> 01:24:28,480
-Here when....
-When you defeat Universitario 5-0
370
01:24:29,355 --> 01:24:31,524
-This is me scoring the fifth goal
371
01:24:35,069 --> 01:24:40,492
-This is the fifth headed goal. And this is the first one I made.
372
01:24:40,742 --> 01:24:41,534
-Who did it?
373
01:24:41,701 --> 01:24:42,494
-I did
374
01:24:43,328 --> 01:24:44,120
-You scored 2 goals
375
01:24:44,788 --> 01:24:46,081
-You're a fan of what team?
376
01:24:46,498 --> 01:24:47,791
- Of Alianza
377
01:24:48,917 --> 01:24:51,377
-He was going to say of the U
378
01:24:51,878 --> 01:24:52,587
- What?
379
01:24:52,587 --> 01:24:55,256
-I have a twisted grandson, don't I?
380
01:24:57,842 --> 01:25:04,682
My father and my uncle Miguel have been Alianza Lima football players
381
01:25:09,354 --> 01:25:17,237
I started playing at the end of'61, when I was brought in from "Mariscal Sucre"
382
01:25:17,237 --> 01:25:23,201
Since then I played for Alianza until 69 and I played for the national team too
383
01:25:26,246 --> 01:25:29,666
We've championed three times and subchampioned once
384
01:25:29,666 --> 01:25:34,963
We always were together and defend each other
385
01:25:34,963 --> 01:25:40,260
We had a great friendship, that's why they called us
"the intimates of La Victoria".
386
01:25:43,513 --> 01:25:46,474
I played and travelled all over South America
387
01:25:46,558 --> 01:25:49,519
At that time there water great teams
388
01:25:49,602 --> 01:25:53,940
Pelé, Garrincha, Menotti.....historic players.
389
01:25:54,315 --> 01:26:02,949
I played as a starter until 1965 when I started playing as a
substitute for Teófilo Cubillas
390
01:26:03,032 --> 01:26:06,619
He took me out because he was a better player than me
391
01:26:07,203 --> 01:26:08,788
And there were no hard feelings
392
01:26:08,788 --> 01:26:14,043
He once said: "I brought out a great player and that is Mr Rostaing
393
01:26:21,843 --> 01:26:27,932
I may not have money as I should have, because I have earned good money,
394
01:26:27,932 --> 01:26:34,230
Not being as wasteful as I've been is important, isn't it?
395
01:26:34,230 --> 01:26:38,443
But I don't regret it because I've lived my life, I've enjoyed it,
396
01:26:38,443 --> 01:26:47,619
I've helped who I've had to help. Above all I have friends,
who respond to me as friends
397
01:26:47,619 --> 01:26:53,124
and that is the most valuable thing a man or a woman can have, friendship
398
01:27:02,091 --> 01:27:04,719
-He got promoted at the Navy
399
01:27:04,719 --> 01:27:05,720
-It is what they say
400
01:27:05,720 --> 01:27:08,473
-He ate all the snacks.I was afraid...
401
01:27:08,473 --> 01:27:10,600
-That's ok.
402
01:27:10,600 --> 01:27:14,020
-Gata's boyfriend, yes she has one already
403
01:27:14,020 --> 01:27:16,481
-How nice, thank to god.
404
01:27:16,481 --> 01:27:18,942
-He seems a good boy.
405
01:29:49,300 --> 01:29:52,970
In the past, we piled up the mineral on the floor,
406
01:29:52,970 --> 01:29:57,558
then we start using a transporter belt from the dock to the ship.
407
01:29:57,558 --> 01:30:00,395
Now it's use a conveyour belt.
408
01:30:08,611 --> 01:30:15,243
Before the conveyour belt, it took a week to load
a ship hold, now it takes just one day,
409
01:30:15,409 --> 01:30:20,706
1,200 to 1,500 tons per hour, we used to load just 300.
410
01:30:20,706 --> 01:30:24,001
It's more sophisticated and faster.
411
01:31:34,739 --> 01:31:40,745
Copper, copper with gold, which is more valuable,
it's shipped in containers, not as bulk.
412
01:31:40,786 --> 01:31:44,832
But that has been always that way, like the gold and silver.
413
01:31:49,754 --> 01:31:59,805
we would sell them the ore for 10 cents and they would
send us a replacement made of the same ore for $1,000
414
01:31:59,931 --> 01:32:04,644
That's why we're such a backward country. In Peru so far we can't make a car,
415
01:32:04,644 --> 01:32:09,357
in Brazil they make their cars, not here,
416
01:32:09,357 --> 01:32:11,817
having better things than them.
417
01:32:14,362 --> 01:32:22,370
That is the reason Perú doesn't develops faster, we lack of Industry.
