Juvenal drives a tram in Belo Horizonte, one of Brazil’s main cities. This reticent man spends his spare time in his apartment. Whenever he’s thirsty, he drinks water from the one and only glass he possesses. His colleague Margô asks him to be a witness at her wedding, but this means that some sort of friendly relationship should exist between these two lonely people – and this takes time.
Loosely based on the Edgar Allan Poe story published in 1840, the film is a reflection about different forms of loneliness and friendship in the Brazilian urban universe.
"The fascinating result of a collaboration between a filmmaker and a fine artist. The square format in which artist Cao Guimarães and director Marcelo Gomes have chosen to shoot their film turns this unhurried tale of loneliness into a series of artworks that combine the retro appeal of a Polaroid with the feel of a modern digital display. The plot explores the differences between self-imposed singledom and the kind of profound loneliness experienced by the protagonists – both archetypes of today’s industrial society – whilst life continues to rage and bluster about them." - Berlin Film Festival

THE MAN OF THE CROWD
00:07:25.233 --> 00:07:26.600
How’s it going?
00:07:27.066 --> 00:07:30.767
I will pin an invitation to
my wedding on the notice board.
00:07:31.834 --> 00:07:34.133
So there’s a party then?
Where’s it going to be?
00:07:34.333 --> 00:07:35.800
At the Brasil Palace.
00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:37.367
Thanks a lot.
00:07:38.100 --> 00:07:39.467
How’s it going?
00:07:39.667 --> 00:07:40.467
Fine.
00:07:41.834 --> 00:07:44.834
You’re driving train 04
tomorrow.
00:07:45.467 --> 00:07:47.033
Evandro said to take 05?
00:07:47.266 --> 00:07:49.467
05 is back in maintenance.
00:07:54.100 --> 00:07:56.233
Train 04 has no API.
00:07:59.333 --> 00:08:01.967
You only care about Train 22,
don’t you?
00:08:02.200 --> 00:08:04.400
The one with no speed limit.
00:09:25.233 --> 00:09:27.133
How is it going?
I am glad I found you.
00:09:27.367 --> 00:09:29.300
Can you take my Monday
shift?
00:09:29.533 --> 00:09:31.567
Again?
Third time this month, man.
00:09:31.800 --> 00:09:33.100
Dude, it is just one last time.
00:09:33.300 --> 00:09:34.900
I have a forró dance to attend.
00:09:35.166 --> 00:09:36.834
Can you make it this time?
00:09:37.800 --> 00:09:39.033
Will you?
00:09:41.433 --> 00:09:42.367
Alright.
00:09:42.567 --> 00:09:44.433
No need to run.
00:09:44.633 --> 00:09:46.734
No need to be scared of
the cobra.
00:09:51.033 --> 00:09:54.266
There’s no danger.
Come closer to see it.
00:09:54.467 --> 00:09:56.367
There is no need to run.
00:10:02.467 --> 00:10:05.734
Look how I concentrate.
Slowly.
00:10:05.934 --> 00:10:09.433
Ready, focused and
concentrated...
00:10:09.633 --> 00:10:10.367
Come on.
00:10:10.567 --> 00:10:13.567
Let’s go. My friend.
I love you.
00:14:51.133 --> 00:14:53.033
From Eldorado to Lagoinha.
00:14:54.633 --> 00:14:58.734
From Lagoinha to Minas Shopping.
00:15:04.266 --> 00:15:06.667
From Minas Shopping,
to Vilarinho.
00:15:10.233 --> 00:15:12.166
Roberto, asshole.
00:15:14.467 --> 00:15:17.767
Roberto, asshole.
Exchanging shifts.
00:15:18.467 --> 00:15:20.266
All the time exchanging shifts.
00:16:20.166 --> 00:16:22.200
Drive the high-speed train.
00:16:27.800 --> 00:16:30.300
The Shanghai Mag-lev.
00:16:32.600 --> 00:16:34.233
500 km per hour.
00:16:34.467 --> 00:16:36.567
30 km in seven minutes.
00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:41.133
Fuck!
00:17:46.467 --> 00:17:50.567
- Here goes a tricky situation
for you to solve.
00:17:52.100 --> 00:17:54.834
Imagine you are in love...
00:17:55.033 --> 00:17:55.834
- Hmm?
00:17:56.066 --> 00:17:57.600
- You go to a party
00:17:57.834 --> 00:18:02.200
where there are three
ex boyfriends of your girl.
00:18:02.800 --> 00:18:06.367
Maybe just two.
That’s a problem, isn’t it?
00:18:08.867 --> 00:18:10.600
I want to know...
00:18:11.967 --> 00:18:15.500
Do you stay or do you go?
00:20:20.333 --> 00:20:23.600
I think I’m going to have to file
a complaint against Paulo.
00:20:24.066 --> 00:20:25.100
What for?
00:20:25.967 --> 00:20:27.734
He is always delayed.
00:20:28.400 --> 00:20:29.967
He doesn’t listen.
00:20:30.400 --> 00:20:33.066
I call him on the transceiver.
I call him on the radio.
00:20:33.266 --> 00:20:35.667
Train 21... Are you copying?
Train 21... Are you copying?
00:20:35.867 --> 00:20:37.400
I fell like a fool.
00:20:38.667 --> 00:20:40.500
Sometimes we really can’t hear.
00:20:40.700 --> 00:20:41.266
What?
00:20:41.500 --> 00:20:42.834
Sometimes we can’t hear.
00:20:44.000 --> 00:20:46.800
But the signal’s been given,
00:20:47.000 --> 00:20:48.500
even if you don’t hear anything,
00:20:48.734 --> 00:20:52.200
you know the signal’s been given
and you have to get moving!
00:20:56.533 --> 00:20:58.133
You’re never delayed.
00:21:13.467 --> 00:21:14.900
Hot, isn’t it?
00:21:33.967 --> 00:21:37.667
Dealing with human being...
that’s hard,
00:21:37.867 --> 00:21:40.033
because machines don’t
screw up.
00:21:40.266 --> 00:21:43.900
Like a computer.
You format it as you want it.
00:21:44.100 --> 00:21:45.800
You program it as you want it.
00:21:46.000 --> 00:21:51.233
In a chatting site: You type,
you get a reply. Type, reply.
00:21:52.934 --> 00:21:55.200
But human being is complicated.
00:22:12.567 --> 00:22:13.667
Good morning.
00:22:13.867 --> 00:22:14.967
Good morning.
00:24:12.467 --> 00:24:14.300
-You took soooo long
00:24:14.533 --> 00:24:18.133
-Yes, almost two hours off line
00:24:37.233 --> 00:24:41.033
Feed your fish
00:25:09.166 --> 00:25:12.834
Visit the moon without
leaving your house
00:28:53.200 --> 00:28:54.567
Hey?
What’s up?
00:28:55.233 --> 00:28:57.300
Hey! Let’s have lunch?
00:29:11.767 --> 00:29:13.200
Its crowded today.
00:29:18.834 --> 00:29:21.600
Did you see my wedding
invitation in the locker room?
00:29:21.800 --> 00:29:22.800
I did.
00:29:24.567 --> 00:29:26.333
Last Sunday of the month.
00:29:26.767 --> 00:29:28.166
In the morning.
00:29:29.100 --> 00:29:31.667
Uff...
Still so much to organize.
00:29:34.133 --> 00:29:35.367
Are you married?
00:29:35.567 --> 00:29:36.467
No.
00:29:39.467 --> 00:29:42.667
Did you talk to Paulo
about the delays?
00:29:43.500 --> 00:29:45.266
No. No I didn’t.
00:29:46.533 --> 00:29:48.066
I did.
00:29:49.900 --> 00:29:51.200
Tough, isn’t it?
00:29:51.567 --> 00:29:52.400
Yeah.
00:30:02.567 --> 00:30:08.300
I met my fiancé through
a dating site on the Internet.
00:30:12.700 --> 00:30:14.200
It really works.
00:30:14.433 --> 00:30:16.900
I found a guy who’s
exactly my match.
00:30:19.567 --> 00:30:21.633
We went out a few times,
00:30:24.233 --> 00:30:26.266
and now we’re getting
married.
00:30:30.667 --> 00:30:32.500
I bet it’s gonna be good.
00:30:37.200 --> 00:30:39.967
I rented a house on
my dad’s street.
00:30:40.567 --> 00:30:42.133
He was thrilled.
00:30:42.500 --> 00:30:43.300
Good.
00:30:43.533 --> 00:30:44.300
Yeah.
00:30:52.400 --> 00:30:55.033
You might find weird
what I have to tell you
00:30:57.033 --> 00:30:58.033
How was your lunch?
00:30:58.266 --> 00:30:59.567
Great. Thanks.
00:31:06.567 --> 00:31:08.367
This is a bit awkward.
00:31:12.300 --> 00:31:19.967
I, I’ve been thinking
and I reckon...
00:31:20.967 --> 00:31:22.367
Do you want the bill?
00:31:22.600 --> 00:31:24.367
In a bit, thanks.
00:31:32.266 --> 00:31:36.233
I reckon you’d be perfect
as my wedding witness.
00:31:37.633 --> 00:31:38.467
Me?
00:31:40.433 --> 00:31:41.900
No, What do you mean?
00:31:43.033 --> 00:31:44.533
That’s not my thing.
00:31:45.000 --> 00:31:47.734
I can’t be.
It just can’t be.
00:32:07.667 --> 00:32:11.100
It’s weird, I know so many
people on the Internet,
00:32:11.400 --> 00:32:16.066
but I have no real person I could
actually invite to be my witness.
00:32:20.800 --> 00:32:25.700
You’re the only person
I’ve had the courage to ask.
00:32:32.467 --> 00:32:37.333
And it’s just a formality,
it’s no big deal.
00:32:38.500 --> 00:32:41.200
You’d just have to be there
to sign the papers.
00:32:42.834 --> 00:32:44.967
I’d cover all the expenses.
00:32:45.166 --> 00:32:49.667
I’d rent you a suit
and everything.
00:32:54.700 --> 00:32:57.667
It’s going to be a party.
You might enjoy it.
00:33:02.734 --> 00:33:04.934
You don’t need to answer
straight away.
00:33:05.500 --> 00:33:07.033
Sleep on it.
00:33:07.667 --> 00:33:09.100
Maybe tomorrow.
00:33:09.333 --> 00:33:15.266
Think about it and you can
give me your decision then.
00:33:22.900 --> 00:33:24.133
Okay.
00:33:26.800 --> 00:33:28.200
So you’ll think about it?
00:33:30.100 --> 00:33:31.600
I will.
00:34:42.233 --> 00:34:43.834
Wedding witness.
00:34:51.133 --> 00:34:53.000
Me, a witness?
00:35:00.300 --> 00:35:04.266
Oh my, witness.
00:35:07.033 --> 00:35:13.100
Suit, witness, witness, suit, tie.
Ohhhh bullshit.
00:35:50.834 --> 00:35:53.266
Wedding is silly.
00:36:01.467 --> 00:36:04.500
This witness thing.
Witness.
00:36:11.500 --> 00:36:13.633
Look, I can’t do it.
00:36:15.400 --> 00:36:18.066
I can’t be your witness.
00:37:48.767 --> 00:37:52.066
46 centimeters in the chest,
00:37:53.800 --> 00:37:56.400
40 in the waist,
00:38:00.967 --> 00:38:03.834
60 centimeters in the arms
00:38:07.867 --> 00:38:09.834
and a meter-twenty in length.
00:38:10.066 --> 00:38:12.467
Just wait a minute while
I get it for you.
00:38:21.900 --> 00:38:23.300
Do you like the color?
00:38:23.533 --> 00:38:24.367
I do.
00:38:26.166 --> 00:38:27.934
Do you want to try it on?
00:38:28.166 --> 00:38:29.266
No.
00:38:29.500 --> 00:38:30.700
To check the measurements.
00:38:30.900 --> 00:38:32.500
No. It’s not necessary.
00:38:33.667 --> 00:38:35.533
I don’t want to try it on.
00:38:37.433 --> 00:38:39.200
I’ll wait outside.
00:39:03.633 --> 00:39:08.300
Wow, it’s crowded here.
It freaks me out.
00:39:08.700 --> 00:39:11.066
Let’s go over there,
drink some water.
00:39:16.633 --> 00:39:21.000
– Here we found the first
apes in Zoo Park.
00:39:21.233 --> 00:39:24.934
We are here in front
of Spider Monkey.
00:39:25.166 --> 00:39:28.100
Tell us about this species...
00:39:55.467 --> 00:39:58.233
This is a commercial building,
isn’t it?
00:40:11.100 --> 00:40:13.066
May I use the bathroom?
00:40:13.266 --> 00:40:14.567
Sure.
00:40:20.000 --> 00:40:21.133
Thanks.
00:41:23.200 --> 00:41:24.133
I have to go too.
00:41:24.367 --> 00:41:25.266
You too?
00:41:26.700 --> 00:41:28.900
I’m just going to grab
a glass of water.
00:41:29.100 --> 00:41:30.166
Sure.
00:42:38.700 --> 00:42:41.066
I couldn’t find any clean glass.
00:43:06.500 --> 00:43:07.633
Do you want it cold?
00:43:07.834 --> 00:43:09.500
No, filtered is fine.
00:43:11.500 --> 00:43:12.800
That's enough!
00:43:15.467 --> 00:43:16.633
Thanks.
00:43:23.600 --> 00:43:25.400
It’s roomy, isn’t it?
00:44:41.467 --> 00:44:43.533
I’d better get going.
00:44:51.934 --> 00:44:54.000
Do you mind openning
the door for me?
00:44:54.233 --> 00:44:56.667
Otherwise, as people say,
I’ll never be back.
00:45:00.867 --> 00:45:02.233
See you.
00:45:03.967 --> 00:45:05.500
See you.
00:48:58.200 --> 00:48:59.433
Have a discount?
00:48:59.667 --> 00:49:01.967
Discount, no.
Hundred and twenty.
00:49:04.567 --> 00:49:05.834
I will take it.
00:56:10.300 --> 00:56:12.367
I’m tired.
00:56:19.000 --> 00:56:20.533
Tired.
00:56:46.500 --> 00:56:48.200
Tired.
00:57:57.767 --> 00:58:02.500
The glass smashed.
Is a bottle okay?
00:58:28.633 --> 00:58:30.400
Thanks.
00:58:31.033 --> 00:58:32.633
Want some?
01:01:29.266 --> 01:01:34.266
Train 22, train 22 did you
have a system crash?
01:01:44.367 --> 01:01:46.800
Train 22 answer, please.
01:01:52.767 --> 01:01:56.233
The dead-man’s switch kicked in
and I forgot to flick it,
01:01:56.467 --> 01:01:59.000
but the system’s been
normalized.
01:02:32.367 --> 01:02:33.266
I got distracted.
01:02:33.500 --> 01:02:35.867
You know this kind of
incident is not normal.
01:02:36.133 --> 01:02:38.567
I’m going to have to report it.
Okay?
01:02:38.800 --> 01:02:39.900
Okay.
01:02:42.266 --> 01:02:45.200
Here comes the controller,
you talk to her, okay?
01:02:56.100 --> 01:02:58.100
I’m going to issue the report.
01:03:06.400 --> 01:03:07.567
How is it going?
01:03:10.834 --> 01:03:12.567
Aren’t you sleeping well?
01:03:12.800 --> 01:03:13.867
Why do you ask?
01:03:14.333 --> 01:03:16.500
It’s not like you to get distracted.
01:03:16.700 --> 01:03:17.867
It happens.
01:03:20.800 --> 01:03:23.367
This Roberto Batata is a jerk.
01:03:32.300 --> 01:03:34.100
Have you eaten?
01:03:35.400 --> 01:03:36.800
Let’s have lunch?
01:04:27.467 --> 01:04:29.066
I’ll get this.
01:04:33.667 --> 01:04:35.133
How much is it, Elaine?
01:04:35.734 --> 01:04:37.066
22 reais.
01:04:37.300 --> 01:04:39.633
Twenty-two?
That much?
01:04:54.633 --> 01:04:56.300
Can I get you anything else?
01:04:56.400 --> 01:04:57.300
No, thanks.
01:04:58.166 --> 01:05:00.200
Do you want more milk candy?
- No.
01:05:01.700 --> 01:05:03.100
I’d better go.
01:05:03.333 --> 01:05:04.233
Thanks.
01:06:02.166 --> 01:06:03.166
Okay.
01:06:06.400 --> 01:06:10.433
I have to hang up,
I’ll call you later. Ciao.
01:06:11.900 --> 01:06:13.033
How is it going?
01:14:26.900 --> 01:14:32.967
Happiness! Happiness!
01:14:34.300 --> 01:14:39.900
My friendship went away
with you.
01:14:41.600 --> 01:14:48.200
If it returns, bringing you back,
01:14:49.767 --> 01:14:55.133
Great happiness will reign!
01:14:56.667 --> 01:14:59.066
I carry on my chest
01:14:59.300 --> 01:15:02.600
The mark of your absence
01:15:02.867 --> 01:15:06.400
The scar of a friendship
01:15:06.667 --> 01:15:10.133
I watched die so young.
01:15:11.333 --> 01:15:13.600
It saddens me
01:15:13.867 --> 01:15:17.300
When I see joy around
01:15:17.667 --> 01:15:20.700
I envy the ones
01:15:20.900 --> 01:15:25.500
who don’t know what pain is
01:15:26.133 --> 01:15:32.834
Happiness! Happiness!
01:15:33.533 --> 01:15:39.800
My friendship went away
with you.
01:15:40.667 --> 01:15:47.900
If it returns, bringing you back,
01:15:48.967 --> 01:15:54.533
Great happiness will reign!
01:15:55.967 --> 01:16:01.467
My destiny
Was written in the cards
01:16:01.967 --> 01:16:05.266
I was not cut out for labor
01:16:05.600 --> 01:16:08.800
I was born to beat the drum
01:16:10.300 --> 01:16:12.533
And that is why
01:16:13.066 --> 01:16:16.333
In the life I lead today
01:16:16.700 --> 01:16:19.767
Happiness went away
01:16:20.000 --> 01:16:23.834
and sorrow took its place.
01:16:29.133 --> 01:16:30.767
Congratulations.
01:16:33.066 --> 01:16:35.100
Thank you.
See you.
01:16:35.300 --> 01:16:36.934
Good luck.
01:18:14.967 --> 01:18:16.400
Cheers.
01:18:52.934 --> 01:18:54.500
Cheers.
01:19:03.300 --> 01:19:05.600
I once slept while driving
the subway.
01:19:05.834 --> 01:19:08.066
The dead man woke me up.
01:19:08.700 --> 01:19:12.200
The dead man woke you?
01:19:15.600 --> 01:19:21.033
The dead man is a safety device
in the metro cabin.
01:19:21.233 --> 01:19:24.967
The operator has to flick
on every ten seconds
01:19:25.667 --> 01:19:28.300
to show that everything
is alright.
01:19:47.934 --> 01:19:49.500
Cheers.
01:25:40.667 --> 01:25:42.533
I brought this for you.
01:29:20.300 --> 01:29:24.333
It is worth remembering
01:29:26.934 --> 01:29:30.433
That an empty glass
01:29:32.133 --> 01:29:35.500
Is full of air.
01:29:36.533 --> 01:29:40.967
It is worth remembering
01:29:43.166 --> 01:29:48.100
That the somber air of a face
01:29:48.400 --> 01:29:52.433
Is full of empty air
01:29:52.633 --> 01:29:56.066
Empty of that
01:29:56.266 --> 01:29:58.700
Which fills the place
01:29:58.900 --> 01:30:02.467
In the air of a glass
01:30:03.533 --> 01:30:06.533
It is worth remembering
01:30:06.734 --> 01:30:09.533
By heart,
01:30:09.867 --> 01:30:12.100
That the empty air
01:30:12.333 --> 01:30:19.867
Of a somber face is full of pain
